PS3 gets DivX support; Xbox 360 doesn’t
By Danny Mendez
Going above and beyond Microsoft in providing a home console that can double as a great media machine, Sony and DivX have combined forces to provide the maturing PS3 with support for the popular DivX video format.
Yesterday, DivX announced their codec will make it’s way onto Sony’s latest console via software update. Kevin Hell, CEO of DivX, Inc. commented on the announcement. "Our technology will expand the multimedia functionality of PS3 by enabling users to enjoy access to the broad library of content in the DivX digital media format."
That is definitely no joke. The DivX format is largely used amongst video pirates, and adding such a feature will give users access to the "broad library of content" on pirates’ computers. I doubt anyone other than content providers and studios would be bothered by that. Although Sony is considered to be a content provider and movie studio, the added functionality to the PS3 works in the company’s favor in a major way.
Unlike the Xbox 360, Sony doesn’t give users the option to rent or buy TV shows and films through it’s console’s online service. Microsoft is rumored to be in talks with DivX with the intent of adding the feature to the Xbox 360, but doing so would theoretically take away from the sale of Xbox Live video as users could easily find and download the the same high quality content for free. As a result, this feature should keep video watchers happy until (if it ever happens) Sony gets their online video service up.
Although many think the PS3 is on its way out, the console is shaping up to be the kind of long-lasting competitor its older brother, the PS2, turned out to be. Offering high quality entertainment options with a growing library of strong, replayable games such as Warhawk, and lengthy single player titles such as the Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, and Grand Theft Auto series, the PS3 is the console many will continue to use for various reasons well past 2010, 2012, and maybe even 2015. Yet that’s the PS3’s problem, it’s good in many areas but not near perfect in one. The Xbox 360, a daunting competitor, has the strongest library of games, which is very attractive to consumers looking for a gaming console. Unfortunately, that’s nearly all it has going for it. Other than expensive, Live video content tethered to your console, the machine can also act as a limited Media Center extender granted you have the proper setup. Oh yeah, there’s also the Wii. Do people still use those?

“Although many think the PS3 is on its way out,”
Those people are known as retards. Its sold as well as the 360 did in its first year yet there isn’t even a reason to buy it yet.
There are more exclusives released or in development for the PS3 than on the 360 and the 2008 exclusives for both consoles favour the PS3 heavily:
PS3
Metal Gear Solid 4
Gran Turismo 5
Final Fantasy 13
Tekken 6
LittleBigPlanet
Killzone 2
L.A. Noire
The Agency
Coded Arms: Assault
Eight Days
FIA World Touring Car Championship
The Getaway 3
Red Dead Revolver 2
Heavy Rain
Infamous
360
Banjo-Kazooie 3
Dance Dance Revolution Universe 2
Dogtag
Fable 2
Magna Carta 2
Mobile Ops: The One Year War
Ninja Gaiden 2
Too Human

“Those people are known as retards. Its sold as well as the 360 did in its first year yet there isn’t even a reason to buy it yet.”
Was there ever a reason to buy a 360, though? It it keeps following the 360…well, most Sony fanboys I know think the 360 is dead by its sales…
As for the article: “Oh yeah, there’s also the Wii. Do people still use those?”
Daily. There are only a few games on any other console I want to play…most of those games are on the DS. I’m not paying a lot for a 360 that I know will be able to play every game (aka one with a hard drive) and then an extra $50 a year to play online. That’s way too much. While the PS3 is just too much period.
In fact, why don’t they work on dropping prices and giving people good games, not making their gaming console a media center…if I wanted to play games and have a media center, I would just use my PC.

You know what…I’m tired of the PS3 fanbois thinking that they have have more “exclusives”.
Fact #1:
Many 360 and PC games are develped in conjuction. This is a PLUS for the 360…not a minus.
Fact #2:
How about you list the games that AREN’T coming to the PS3. THAT list would be huge!
A common argument for these retards is: “I don’t need it for my PS3…I can get it for my PC”. Whatever…you don’t have a PC strong enough to handle the game anyway…and if you are stupid enough to purchase a $1000-$2000 computer just for those game, then you and your PS3 make a good fit.

“Oh yeah, there’s also the Wii. Do people still use those?”
I know you’re probably 12 years old and incredibly misinformed so I understand that you missed the news that the Wii is currently the best selling console. It has more than doubled the sales of the PS3.
And qpqpqp, you might want to update your list of 360 exclusives there, and update Sony’s list as their exclusive developers continue to jump ship.

whoever wrote this article is an idiot. Where’s Sony’s Divx support now, and we 360 owners are already using it 3 weeks after your article.
