At one year mark, PS3 still lags behind Xbox 360 and Wii
Despite being on the market for a full year now, sales for PS3s are still behind its competitors.
Sony is confident that with its library of over 200 titles, more than 60 million pieces of content downloaded in the last year, and a revolutionary system with Sony’s entry into the hi-def DVD format war, its system will be a long lasting competitor in the so-called “Console War”.
“When we designed PS3 our goal was to introduce a system so technically advanced that it could stand the test of time and could take the industry in a whole new direction, which for PS3 was high-definition entertainment,” said Jack Tretton, President and CEO of SCEA.
“While we’re excited by the progress we’ve made this first year, we know that like our other platforms, the best is still yet to come, especially given our new hardware and software line-up, and that PS3 will continue to take the industry to new
heights for years to come.”
Sony’s enthusiasm for the technology it has pumped into its system is understandable, yet, even with price cuts the PS3 is failing to sell to expectations.
Looking at both the Xbox 360 and the Wii there is an immediate noticeable difference: Both have system specific titles with a large following from previous consoles. With the Xbox 360, the game is Halo 3. With the two ultra successful
titles before it, the game created gamers that were willing to go to the lengths of shelling out the money for an Xbox 360 just for that single game. Fans knew the day that the Xbox 360 came out that there would be another Halo game they would want to play and planned their console purchase accordingly.
While Nintendo was still putting the final touches on the Wii, demonstration videos were already out for Super Mario Galaxy. The latest in the line of Nintendo specific games shows you exactly what the system can do. Previous titles from Nintendo’s many systems struck the audience in such a way that some long term gamers still keep their systems today and play those games from time to time, even if they are as old as some of today’s gamers.
On another note, many may argue that the Wii, and its unique remote, are just party favors, but when you see the sales numbers for the Wii, Guitar Hero, and the up and coming Rock Band I think that Nintendo hit their timing right with this interactive system.
As for the PS3, it may have not hit the spotlight yet but it is a solidly built system. Once a third party software manufacturer manages to produce a rock hard hit, showcasing the abilities of the PS3, sales will improve. Until then Sony will be stuck with a slow seller, with not a whole lot to celebrate on this first anniversary of release.

I will make it easy for you the PS3 has been out for 1 year to date the 360 2 years so double the ps3’s sales and guess what your damn near the same. Not only that but the only big hit game the 360 had in its first year was GOW next year PS3 will have huge titles coming out which will along with that price cut make more sales than its first year causing it to sell more units than MS did in its first 2 years. As far as the wii we all know its cheap so hey people are cheap they need to save money nuff said. Think about every 2 wii’s sold as one PS3 sold and there sales get cut in half as far as price goes.

Spencer, the main problem with your comment is that you assume something (which, of course, makes an ass out of both of us). You assume that PS3 sales will double in the next year. This is a horribly flawed assumption for reasons that should be abundantly obvious. Systems sales start strong and then taper off to different levels. To assume that the PS3 will sell another 5 million in the next year because it did so in the previous one is flawed logic because the PS3’s sales have done nothing but drop since launch, thus its sales (unless it has a huge spike soon) will be lower next year than they were this year putting it behind the 360 at the same point in time.
