Xbox 360 will outsell PS3 2 to 1 at Christmas - Wii to outsell both?
By Dave Parrack
The three consoles are all gearing up for the biggest Christmas showdown, possibly in history, or since last year at least. And it looks like this could be the holiday season of the Nintendo Wii… no surprise there. But will the Xbox 360 really be able to outsell the PS3 by 2 units to 1?
The simExchange is a free fantasy video game prediction market, where current sales trends are analysed, and people try to predict how that’ll affect sales in the future. It looks at both hardware and software, but on this occasion we are purely looking at the former.
The simExchange have compiled their October Review Report, a look at the official NPD sales figures, and from there have determined the expected sales for all of the consoles during the holiday period of November and December.
Here is how they see the two months stacking up:
November
Wii - 912,000 units
Xbox 360 - 636,000 units
Playstation 3 - 458,000 units
Nintendo DS - 844,000 units
PlayStation Portable - 398,000 units
December
Wii - 2,370,000 units
Xbox 360 - 1,560,000 units
Playstation 3 - 695,000 units
Nintendo DS - 2,020,000 units
PlayStation Portable - 842,000 units
Putting that altogether, we end up with figures which show the Wii being the out and out winner, selling 3,282,000 over a two month period, which is astonishing, but not wholly unexpected. The only thing I could see getting in the way is the shortages which are already rearing their ugly head. If parents break the news to their children that there are no Wiis to be had, how many will wait, and how many will choose choose and Xbox 360 or a PS3 instead?
Talking of which, their figures stack up as Xbox 360 with 2,196,000 units, compared to the PS3 with 1,153,000, which is almost 2 to 1 as I alluded to in the title of this piece.
These figures obviously aren’t set in stone, but they’re a very good guess based on already existing figures, and I’d suggest they will turn out to be fairly accurate.

Probably not the place to say this, but I’m saying it:
Sure, this website has no problem posting when “Microsoft outsells Wii because of Halo 3″, but does it post that now that the Halo 3 effect has died, Nintendo Wii is back on top?
Although, now that I think about it, maybe the site is being paid not to post something like that.

No-one is getting paid, I wish we were, but we’re not.
I personally am 100% unbiased in my views on the console war, so choose which stories to write about purely based on what is most newsworthy.
The Halo 3 effect making Xbox 360 sell more than Wii was news, the fact that effect is now over, and the Wii is back on top again isn’t really.

That would be something else if Nintendo could sell nearly 4.5 million consoles (between teh DS and Wii) in December alone. It wouldn’t be unexpected, if we assume Nintendo has been holding back some Wiis to sell this Christmas, but that’s a huge number.
That’s just a tad more than MS and Sony though November AND december on all of their consoles (PS2 not included, though).
If they can do that well, 3rd parties will be jumping to the Wii like mad. I’m not totally sure its possible, just from a production standpoint, but, wow, that would be something else!

I have your site come up frequently from my feeds, and I swear I should have surveyed you + to - articles on the PS3 for a very long time.

Sony Celebrates First Birthday of PS3 in the US
Posted by Nick Dorrington | Nov 17, 2007 05:00
Sony has celebrated the first year anniversary of the PS3’s US launch by releasing a press statement (real flashy!) outlining how the system and its games are performing.
The most interesting points are as follows:
- The PS3 has sold 5.6million units worldwide, 2 million in North America
- Their aim is still to sell 11million units worldwide by March
- In Japan, Europe, The Middle East and Africa, PS3 has out-sold the XBox 360 by three-to-one in year-to-date sales
- Haze is the first multi-platform title to be developed on the PS3 and then ported over to the XBox, reversing the trend of last year, which led to some sloppy PS3 ports.
- 200 PS3 titles will be available by the end of this year worldwide
- Over 60million pieces of content have been downloaded from the Playstation Network.
- PS3 Blu-ray currently outsells 360 HD-DVD by nine-to-one
- 87% of PS3 owners watch Blu-ray discs on their system, 80% have purchased Blu-ray movies and 82% intend to purchase or rent Blu-rays.
- Blu-ray titles continue to outsell HD-DVD by two-to-one
- There will be more than 450 Blu-ray titles available to PS3 owners this Christmas.
Ummmmmm?
