Will Wii draw FPS players from Xbox 360 and PS3?

Will Wii draw FPS players from Xbox 360 and PS3?With popularity soaring for the Wii, new and innovative ways to use the system is the next big step to take with the console.  Nintendo has already announced their version of a new shooter accessory, but it will be third party companies that will pave the way for the most interesting of accessories.

In September Nintendo announced the final form of a new accessory for the Wii named the "Wii Zapper".  Packaged with the game "Link’s Crossbow Training", the Wii accessory was to help emulate a shooting device.  Although functional, it does leave one reminiscing over a similarly named accessory for the original NES.

Here’s where peripheral manufacturer NYKO comes into play.  Instead of the original prototype of the Zapper (known also as the Wii Blaster) which looked much like a sawed off shotgun, or the current version with its two hand grips and rounded edges, NYKO has produced a pistol version that reminds older gamers more of the original Zapper.

Will Wii draw FPS players from Xbox 360 and PS3NYKO’s version, named the Perfect Shot, is shaped like a semi-automatic pistol. It is a one handed accessory made to hold the Wiimote where a barrel would be on a real gun.  An additional pass through port allows normal use of a nunchuck.

With an even more realistic gun (despite its bright and lively color scheme) out on the market, will we see more instances of Wiimote hacks so fans can use a "gun" in their favorite FPS games?  Perhaps we’ll see a chance of more publishers using the Wii as a real gaming system instead of a child’s toy, despite the inferior graphics to both the Xbox 360 and the PS3.  Either way we are certain to hear more complaining from political and religious figures due to the motions this type of accessory uses in the more violent Wii games.

    Actually, I prefer 10 year old control schemes for my FPS games. Who would ever want to have to actually AIM in a shooter, how silly is that? I mean little childish thumb sticks are PERFECT for aiming!

    LOL – no the Wii won’t be taking anyone from Halo3, Cod4 or any other FPS on the 360. Can’t say about the PS3 b/c they don’t have the Xbox Live experience but if someone wants to play a FPS game without multiplayer then sure, why not play on a Wii… It’s equally pointless!!

    played metroid prime 3 and love it, normally hate fps. the graphics are great, the controls make halo3 seem ancient. and as for no online thats just idiotic. The wiis about to get a FPS with great reviews that handles 32 players, oh and onlines free.
    who really thinks the next xbox will keep the same old controller next gen? ur kidding yourselves. As usual nintendo has brought us the new gaming standard and where it leads others follow (rumble, d-pad, anologue stick, motion controls, touch screen, wireless controllers)

    The whole reason to why I bought a Wii was because I knew it would be cool actually aim guns, swing swords, & steer vehicles. Xbox 360 & PS3 controls are out dated & dull.

  6. GroverFD:

    Yeah. Low resolution, low sound fidelity, and finiky aiming scheme lead to excellent FPS game controls and play. God this site is full of complete BS.

    @dan: Metroid Prime was frustrating as all hell. Please dont pull the “Oh the controls were brilliant thing”. How many times did you have to try to unlock doors? That was _real_ annoying.. and the accuracy was also a damn pain – try it on a small SDTV and it is nothing but horrible. On my 42inch plasma, it looks horrible, but least there is more accuracy – but I really dont know which is worse/better. Wii is NOT a FPS gaming device no matter how u look at it.

    The Wii is a lovely little kiddies/E for everyone gaming machine, and thats about it. ie you like Nintendo franchises like Mario/Pokemon and Zelda, then get a Wii.

    Remember, GroverFD, dan usually hates fps. I think you have played, oh, almost everyone out there. So I can see that maybe you would expect more out of the game.
    But you take Dan as an example–the Wii changed his view on fps. That’s what the Wii is doing to EVERYONE–changing their view on how to play/make a fun game! (Let’s not have any of this “little kiddes/E” stuff.)

    @grover,

    The MP3 controls are light years ahead of dual analog. I much prefer them to Halo 3 controls. Online is great, but free online is better. If MP3 looks bad on your HDTV, you probably have a cheap scaler in it. It looks great on my 42.
