Sony disputes Xbox 360 sales figures – Wii beats PS3 anyway

Sony disputes Xbox 360 sales figures - Wii beats PS3 anywayThis holiday season is going to be one of the dirtiest, bloodiest battles in the push to be the top selling console. All three main players, Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft are going to try anything to sell more units, and be the winner come the new year.

With only a week gone, the figures are already being bandied about, with all 3 companies claiming healthy sales over Black Friday week, and Thanksgiving weekend.

Nintendo were first to show their hand, announcing sales in the US of 350,000 Wiis for the week. Then Microsoft followed suit, announcing they managed to shift 310,000 Xbox 360s. All fine so far, except that Microsoft then claimed that this meant the Xbox had outsold the PS3 two-to-one last week, according to “estimates from top retailers.”

Sony are refusing to announce any estimated figures, preferring instead to wait until the official NPD Group statistics come out on the middle of December. They did however refute Microsoft’s claims, telling Seattle Pi in an email:

“It’s (Sony Computer Entertainment America) policy not to disclose our unit sales numbers until NPD numbers are officially released which will be December 13th. However, I can assure you that Microsoft’s estimates of our PS3 unit sales numbers are way off and they did not outsell PS3 2:1 during Black Friday week.”

So there!

Seriously though, it’s all too early to speculate. I agree with Sony’s stance on waiting until the official sales figures are published. What’s probably already clear though is the Wii is continuing to dominate the market, with the Xbox 360 in second, and the PS3 bringing up the rear.

Along with the Wii figures, Nintendo also claimed that this last week saw it sold “more Nintendo products than at any other time in its history”. This is due to the phenomenally successful Nintendo DS, which sold and estimated 653,000 units in just Black Friday week. Along with the Wii, that equates to over a million units of Nintendo hardware being sold in America in the space of seven days. No wonder their shares are climbing through the roof.

The PS3 is now outselling everything outside America. In Europe, the Wii cannot be found, but PS3 is selling like hot cakes. In Japan, PS3 is now outselling Wii also.

I think Microsoft may just end up with egg on their face with their latest FUD stunt…

It’s a shame they have fooled so many with their previous FUD stunts.

I still cant really see why people keep comparing sales of the Wii to the 360 and PS3. Its not in the same market as them. To me its like continually pointing out that Toyota Corollas outsell top of the range BMW and Mercedes.

Anyway I doubt very much that the 360 outsold the PS3 by 2:1. Firstly because Sony wouldnt dispute it so publicly if they ddid and secondly because that would mean the PS3 only sold 150k in that week when we already had reports that it sold over 100k the week before.

Incidentally the PS3 outsold the 360 by 5:1 in Japan last month. If Sony were are pathetic as Microsoft they would now be rubbing that in their faces.

  3. Michael:

Sony would dispute it publically. Of course they would. Whether it’s true or not Sony press releases bear no resemblance to what actually happens. One day before the Sony price drop the Sony CEO was categorically denying that there was going to be a price drop.

As for the PS3 selling like hotcakes in Europe. Which Europe is this? I live there. Everybody that I know that has a console has a 360. Some have Wiis. Nobody has a PS3. The Blu-Ray disks are being discounted heavily in the major retailers because nobodys buying them.

Don’t listen to the “other” Michael, the ps3 is selling extremely well in Europe, France and Germany have just seen massive sales rises, plus the ps3 is constantly selling well in Germany and Britain. This is exceptionally good as the ps3 had only been released in late March over here in Europe. My local Woolworths doesn’t even sell HD-DVD’s, the HMV has a small corner for it whilst the blu-ray library keeps growing. They even put blu-ray discs up with Warner films in the dvd chart put put hd-dvd ones in the corner with only a few copies. Nearly all my friends have ps3′s, one of my friends got a 360, tried to show tried to show it off with H3 and GOW, but we got bored and put an old N64 on. After that most got ps3′s the rest are getting them for christmas. Now my 360 owning friend is stuck playing online with Americans, until he gets the ps3 with Warhawk for Christmas.

P.S. “other/evil” michael, u have seen the recent news that 73% of HD discs sold in Europe are BLU-RAY, it seems to me ur living in some strange little fantasy where the 360 isn’t rubbish and hd-dvd is doing well

  6. Michael (not the mad one):

Whatever. 73% of a small number is still a small number. I didn’t say HD-DVD were selling well either. I just said that in my local shops the Blu-Ray stuff is being discounted to get rid of it. Yes there is little HD-DVD stuff too. Sorry for having to clarify for people who need everything explained in minute detail.

Have a look at VGChartz and show me the massive sales rises that you’re talking about for the PS3.

You’re not a Sony exec living in a bubble are you?

  7. Michael (a different one):

Go to google, select news, type in ps3 sales, it takes over 4,000 news sources, if u want to specify which country has the sales rises, just type the country in as well.

I’m not a sony exec living in a bubble, i’m u a year from now, a rip in the space-time contnium opened up because of fundamentalist aliens called “grasshoppers” detonated a giant hula-hoop object… throw in a couple of boring characters and u’ve got the plot of a 360 game and make it an fps and u got the rubbish gameplay too.

  8. Brad:

I’m neither on the side of the 360 or the PS3 (I won both)! What I will say is that the PS3 sales only bumped up in Europe for about 3 weeks and is now selling poorly again! I know because I work in a warehouse where we pack games consoles/games and we have to keep an eye on OFFICIAL sales charts!!! The wii is owning the ps3 and 360 all over the place including japan (even after the shortages)! The 360 is only just ahead of the PS3 in monthly sales and as for criticising 360 games, well that’s all the PS3 is getting 6 months after isn’t it? Motorstorm, Resistance, Lair and Drakes fortune .. all awful!!!
As for HD-DVD .. it’s already winning in America (where it counts) … it has the backing of Microsoft, Intel, HP, Toshiba, Wallmart, Universal, Paramount, Dreamworks, The Porn Industry and in a recent poll 75% of Hollywood director’s prefered the format to Bluray!
Argu away but the ps3 is doing so bad that even Sony have just announced so … they should know, they make the awful thing don’t they?

  9. Levelgx:

    Levelgx ..are you an idiot?!
That was November!! and it was when Halo came out, the only week that it out sold O.O.
When MGS comes out will you say , oh ..PS3 outsold everywhere? : )
