Wii smashes PS3 and Xbox 360, so Nintendo just stops trying

Sales of the Nintendo Wii have so far exceeded anyone and everyone’s expectations, even games developers and Nintendo itself. The small white console has smashed sales of the Xbox 360 and PS3 so convincingly that Nintendo has now seemingly decided to just give up trying…
Nintendo had a whole series of adverts lined up to promote the Wii in the run up to Christmas, but because demand is already running so high, they have been pulled and replaced with adverts for the Nintendo DS instead.
The campaign for the Wii had been created by Karmarama, and was meant to run from now until the new year in an effort to get consumers shelling out their hard earned cash for the console. The problem is (although it’s hardly a problem for the Big N itself) that Wiis are already rarer than a hit record from Britney Spears, there’s absolutely no need to spend money advertising them.
In fact Nintendo goes as far to say it would be irresponsible of them!
A Source from the Japanese gaming giant told Marketing Week:
“We have been running the campaign all year round, but we want to take a responsible stance this Christmas and not fuel demand.”
It’s a good move, as there’s already a sickening amount of parents getting desperate to lay their hands on a Wii for the children this Christmas. Advertising would only make that enviable demand increase even more, and probably make more parents go mad with effort trying to secure one.
Nintendo is already producing 1.8 million Wiis every month in an effort to meet demand but it’s just not enough to sate gamers worldwide desperate for a piece of innovative action.
A spokesman for the company told the BBC:
“[Demand has been] unprecedented and higher than Nintendo could ever have anticipated. We are doing everything possible to supply continued levels of stock and meet demand as quickly as possible.”
“As we are keen to act responsibly we are potentially looking at moving some advertising on some products into early 2008.”
It’s been an incredible period for the Wii since its release, and that looks set to continue apace in to the new year. The DS is also selling in huge amounts at the moment, so Nintendo is truly the force to be reckoned within the games industry. Microsoft and Sony, you have quite a bit of catching up to do.
Oh, and Chuck Norris is also catching up fast on you guys, so you’d better watch your backs too.

You can’t really blame Nintendo. When you are selling every system you ship and still can’t meet demand, advertising it will just be wasting money that could be better spent elsewhere.

Hang a tic - Nintendos week on week sales are down against the PS3. Additionally it looks like X360 and PS3 are going to have strong Xmas period again, and it looks like the Wii will not? How this makes any ’sense’ is beyond me, unless Nintendo dont expect sales to improve, but to dive?

Seriously how pathetic is it that the PS3 & Xbox 360 can’t sell more consoles than the Wii which is hard to produce as it is? More over how pathetic is the 360 since it easily lost 1st place in world sales despite having a year start?

In case you are all too lazy to click those, they are Wiis selling for over $500 (in some UK cases over $2000 legitimately, read: not a hoax auction) while Xbox 360s sell for around the $250 mark.

From what I have read and seen Nintendo is doing great. I love reading the gamers who stick to one console, they think they are all cool because they are a PS3 fan, or XBOX 360 Fan, or even a Wii fan. Don’t they know that they are acting like idiots?
I have all 3 systems, all have great features, but from what I see the Wii is the most wanted, because of the way the game is played. I have tons more fun with the Wii then i do with PS3 or the XBOX 360. But that is only when i have friends over. If I am playing alone, I am on the 360 or PS3, and sometimes Wii, now that i got guitar hero 3 for it.
I like all the systems! but when i go to the store, Wii is ALWAYS out of stock, and PS3 is filled to the top and so is the 360. I know the demand is EXTREMELY high for Wiis.
