Wii expected to slaughter PS3 and Xbox 360 in November sales

By Dave Parrack

Wii expected to slaughter PS3 and Xbox 360 in November salesAs we approach the time of the month when the latest console sales figures get released, two different analysts have predicted how they might read. Unsurprisingly, both Michael Pachter and Jesse Divnich suggest that the Wii is streets ahead of its home console rivals the PS3 and Xbox 360.

Michael Pachter is the Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst who provides a game sales preview report in advance of the official NPD data for the month, which is expected on Thursday.

In his report for November, he estimates that console software sales will have totalled $1 billion. That’s quite incredible, as its a 24% increase year on year, although even he admits that could be down to this year’s figures including 9 days of post Thanksgiving sales, compared to just 2 for the same period last year.

Pachter believes that the Wii sold around 950,000 units during November, compared to 750,000 Xbox 360s and just 420,000 PS3s.

Jesse Divnich meanwhile, is a simExchange analyst, who also compiled predictions for the month of November. I bet these guys are a lot of fun when they’re not looking at charts and stuff…

He expects even more from the software sales figures, expecting them to total $1.15 billion, which he claims “will be the highest ever seen in the month of November and the first time November sales will break $1 billion.”

His hardware sales predictions are pretty much the same as Pachter’s, but just a bit higher all round. He thinks the Wii will have sold 1,060,000 units, the Xbox 360 728,000, and the PS3 once again bringing up the rear with 410,000 units sold. The actual biggest seller though will be the Nintendo DS, with 1.3 million units sold, compared to 468,000 for Sony’s PSP.

Interestingly however, Divnich notes that this could be the first signs of the PS3 gaining some momentum:

“Consistently a distant third, the PS3 is beginning to close the gap with its closest rival, as the Xbox 360 is only expected to out sell the PS3 1.8-to-1 in November compared to 3-to-1 in October. The prediction market upgraded the PS3 forecast after the initial reception of the new 40GB PS3 model and recent press releases indicating a strong Thanksgiving weekend.”

What’s clear is that once again, the Wii has slaughtered the PS3 and Xbox 360 in terms of sales. We’ll see how close these predictions turn out to be once the official US sales figures are published later in the week, but for now Wii owners (if they’ve managed to get hold of one in the current high demand frenzy) can sit back in the safe knowledge that their console of choice is still at the top of the heap. For how long though, is anyone’s guess… feel free to do so in the comments.

Uncharted Drake’s Fortune is a must have.

Those white dual shocks are nice and the deep red PSP coming out looks sexy, also check out ‘Beats’ for the PSP which you can download from the PS store.

Seriously, I don’t think that much can be done to help the Playstation 3–as far as I know, it’s just not even trying to appeal to kids and women. Microsoft still has a lot of work to do and a long way to go, but it’s got a start at least.

    4. Jesse Divnich:

I am hoping that 2008 will be Sony’s year. They really don’t have a choice if they want to survive.

I’d like to think I’m fun even while looking at charts.

      Thanks the insight, great comments!
