Analyst: PS3 still has a long way to catch up with Wii

December 14, 2007

PS3 still has a long way to catch up with Wii It’s alive, after a long wait and some patience Sony was no doubt relieved to learn that for the first time the PS3 has managed to outsell the Wii, in Japan.

Sir Howard Stringer is moving his company into a recovery stage and that may have been the first step.  Plans are in the works for the Playstation network which will have content for the PS3 itself and other Sony devices.  He admitted to a degree that Sony is following in Apple’s footsteps.

Last month Sony sold 183,217 PS3 units while Nintendo sold “only” 159,193 Wiis.

Sony is also elated to learn that Nintendo is still having troubles meeting demands which is all the better for the PS3, perhaps some looking at a Wii will make the jump to the PS3.

He pretty much ended with saying that PS3 games are more fun, no doubt there as you can actually make out the environment you are in and what your objective/target is.

But, inexperienced gamers gravitate towards the Wii.  Hiroshi Kamide of KBC Securities told The Guardian, “If you are the kind of person who plays once in a while, the bells and whistles that come with a PS3 don’t mean much. It is a more powerful version of its predecessor, but in terms of games there’s nothing really new.”

Obviously there is some catching up to do but maybe the shortage of Wiis combined with parents needing and/or wanting to put gifts under the tree may help Sony.  If I were a teenager, I’d rather have a PS3 now than wait for a Wii, of course, I’d rather have the PS3 anyway but it should be clear what I was trying to say.

It’s clear, Jonathan, but you need to go back to what you said…

“Inexperienced gamers gravitate towards the Wii”

“If you are the kind of person who plays once in a while, the bells and whistles that come with a PS3 don’t mean much.”

In that case, if some kids are impatient, that doesn’t mean they will switch to something that they don’t want, they can still wait for what they do want.
For example, I’m waiting for Star Trek: Armada in the mail. We all know–totally outdated game. It’s taking a while to arrive, but knowing I’m getting it eventually, so as impatient as I am, I’m not purchasing Star Trek: Legacy, which is much easier to get. Why? I don’t want it and I’m willing to wait.

I promise I mean no offense, but to put it simply, you sort of picked a bad example of making the point. Why? Because how many people like you are there? You need to ask a person who likes the Wii what THEY would do in the case of a shortage, not what YOU would do.

You should check last week sales in Japan. Wii sales have jumped over 50% and is killing PS3 in Japan again – seems like the price cut effect is now over, or maybe it’s Japanese people who had been holding back from buying a Wii back because they were waiting for Wii Fit to come out.

  4. Pan:

Yep the Wii ioutsold the PS3 by 3 to 1 according to last weeks figures here in Japan.

It has outsold the PS3 for the past two weeks in Japan. November was a 2 week blip, I think.

Well, Wii games are simplistic and there’s tons of crap on the system (just as there is on DS). Even game magazines that like the Wii bash it for not having many good games but having lots of junk.

I think they’re two totally different markets, so I would only worry about PS3 vs XB360. That one is much closer than I ever expected (I thought 360 would be DOA).

In the end, sales and stuff don’t matter a whole lot. PS3 is getting some great games, so that’s all I actually care about.

“no doubt there as you can actually make out the environment you are in and what your objective/target is.”
So you can’t make out the environment in Super Mario Galaxy? I’m thinking the problem isn’t with the Wii, rather it is that you need glasses.

“But, inexperienced gamers gravitate towards the Wii.”
    And a brain apparently.

How do you continue to get articles “published” on here exactly? Every one is worse than the last and there is no end in sight…kind of like the PS3’s sales figures eh?

I am not an inexperienced gamer. I am a hardcore gamer. I like what the Xbox360 has to offer, and have yet to see anything really good on the PS3, but am impressed by its potential graphics power.

I still find myself gravitating towards the Wii. It’s fun. It’s different. It’s changing the world of gaming forever. Like it or not, the Wii is revolutionary.

    Nintendo read the market correctly:
    – Not many people have HD TVs
    – Everyone already has a DVD player
    – Tech specs are lost on most people
    – Everyone can be a “Gamer”

And now Nintendo is reaping the benefits of taking a chance, changing the way games are played. Whilst Xbox360 and PS3 have nothing really new to offer except better graphics. Same games, better graphics. I love FPS, etc.; they’re fun, but they haven’t been revolutionary since DOOM.
