Nintendo Wii Fast Approaching 20 Million Units Sold
According to unofficial sales watchdog VGChartz, the Nintendo Wii is fast approaching the 20 million mark in terms of total console sales.
Gaming Watchdog Group VGChartz (yes, I called them a watchdog group) keeps track of game and console sales through a formula which includes the use of data sampling and shipment information as well as other assorted factors. Using this data they have been able to determine that roughly 17.5 million Nintendo Wiis have found homes around the world.
While 20 million for any home console is impressive, to see it after only thirteen months on the market is almost unheard of. The PlayStation 2, which had sold over 120 million units before official records of PlayStation 2 sales were halted, took nineteen months to ship twenty million units out the door.
While Nintendo’s 17.5 million units gives them a clear lead in the market share with 42.8%, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 is not far behind. According to the same VGChartz figures, the Xbox 360 has sold an impressive 15.32 million units, giving them 37.4% of the market. This is especially impressive when you consider Microsoft is the only console manufacturer left to break the one million sales mark in Japan.
The PlayStation 3 brings up the rear with its 19.8% of the market, or 8.12 million units.
As of now it is unclear as to whether or not these sales figures fully take into account holiday sales, so in theory Nintendo may have already surpassed the 20 million mark. You can be sure that once we know when the Wii passes 20 million, GAMER.BLORGE will pass it along to you.

watchdog group? i will leave that alone but vgchartz sales arent anything more than predictions and are not any better than other prediction sites out there.

TheXbox 360 has been out nearly twice as long.
VGChartz are better than relying on MS or Sony figures which includes consoles not yet sold to consumers.

I am in agreement with GamesRUs. Sourcing VGChartz.com when there are plenty of other sources out there? And to call that site a watchdog group is laughable. At first the site was taken somewhat seriously but now few people in the US give it any credibility. At least it has a decent forum.

I like blorge, but this is bullsh*#. VGfartz is making a mockery of this industry. The guy that runs the site lives in London from what we’ve been told and is an unknown entity who hides behind the fact that he mixes actual sales information from researchers with some half cocked formula, puts his own stamp on it and hides behind a methodology on his site that could not be further from the truth. We – tha tis the retailer I work for – watched him for awhile and figured it out. Its a shame blorge decided to waste ink on it. It really is a crying shame.

It’s nice to stumble upon these type of postings but fret not. Eventually, the individual who runs the site will be tracked down and cornered. His ego will be his undoing.
