According to Media Create, a company that tracks the sales figures of just about everything under the sun, the Nintendo DS has surpassed the PlayStation 2 in total units sold. Over the Christmas holiday, increased sales of the handheld helped it to surpass the six-year-old console, with the DS now a shade under 21 million units sold (20,954,157). The PlayStation 2, to this point has sold a staggering 20,901,468 units.
While the Nintendo DS has overtaken the PlayStation 2 in Japan, it has a long away to go before it becomes the number one video game system in the industry’s history. To this point the PlayStation 2 has sold over 120 million units, while the Nintendo DS has sold somewhere in the range of 53 million. In fact, in order for the DS to contend with the PS2 for all-time sales, the handheld would have to surpass three other Nintendo platforms including the original Game Boy (118 million) and Game Boy Advance (80 million), the Nintendo Entertainment System (62 million), and even Sony’s original PlayStation (102 million).
The Nintendo DS was released in Japan on December 2nd, 2004. The redesigned Nintendo DS Lite was released on March 2nd, 2006 and made its debut in Japan. The PlayStation 2 was released four and a half years earlier than the Nintendo DS on March 4th, 2000, and made its American debut on October 26th, 2000.
