Sony’s PSP gets Skype; becomes multimedia gaming phone

January 2, 2008

PSP02 Sony has always tried to distance its handheld, the PSP, from the Nintendo DS. Both Sony and PSP aficionados like myself have always said that the PSP and the Nintendo DS are not similar; the Nintendo DS plays video games, while the PSP acts as more of a portable multimedia center, with music and movie playback, web browsing, and if Sony’s official CES website is to be believed, Skype.

If you are unaware, Skype is currently a service available on your PC that acts much like a telephone service. You are able to make free calls from your PC to another PC or, for a small free, make calls from your PC to another person’s land line or cell phone. It is also a tool that has become very popular to podcasters for interviews and whatnot.

The question will surely be raised by those who continue to feel there Is some kind of battle between the PSP and DS as to whether this will be what propels the PSP past the DS. After all, with the addition of Skype the PSP has essentially become a multimedia device with a cellular phone built in and I, for one, am excited to learn more about the service. Will it be tied to the PC software, or will it be a stand-alone product? Will it have the full features of Skype, or will it act as a PSP-to-PSP contact device? We’ll find out more in the next week or two at CES.
