The Xbox 360’s secret weapon for staying on par with the Playstation 3

By Triston McIntyre

The Xbox 360’s secret weapon for staying on par with Playstation 3Many critics and consumers are claiming that the Playstation 3 has officially pulled past the Xbox 360 in just about every way; however, there is one little discussed key to the Xbox’s success that will secure the competitive edge of Microsoft’s gaming console when all the odds are stacked against it.

HD-DVD is all but vanquished by Blu-ray; rightfully so, considering the format can’t handle near the capacity of a Blu-ray disc. Some critics believe that Microsoft is only touting HD-DVD in the face of Blu-ray’s superiority to stall until Microsoft is ready to release online HD direct downloads. No matter what the reason, what was originally a competitive edge by providing an external high definition drive (albeit expensive and an additional cost to Playstation’s integrated Blu-ray) is now nothing more than an irritation to customers who wasted money on the feature.

Online play is replacing single player action in the hearts of consumers and developers; just look at the games that are incredibly popular right now…Halo 3, Call of Duty, WoW (though this is a computer game, it still evidences the focus of consumers on online gaming). With that in mind, Microsoft has done just about everything in the last 2 to 3 weeks to anger its customers to no end. Xbox Live has been shoddy at best; just last night Halo 3 players were again forced to play other games because Live experienced difficulties for the umpteenth time.

The problem with poor online performance for the most popular Xbox titles right now is that Microsoft charges an exorbitant annual rate for a service that Sony makes free to all. Some argue that Live is superior to Sony’s network; however, is it really worth the money, especially when as of late, it has hardly worked at all? Running score so far: Sony 2, Microsoft 0.

With the future looking dim for Microsoft’s console, the one factor that everyone overlooks, but plays the biggest part in console gaming is this: the controller. It’s the first thing you notice about playing a game, and what can differentiate the same game on two different consoles.

The Xbox 360 controller is near to flawless for the style of games that the Xbox caters to. It is the ideal FPS controller, and is arguably the best controller for nearly every high-intensity game (everything, perhaps excluding RPGs). Playing COD 4 on the 360 is by far a better experience than using the Playstation’s.

Though Playstation fans love their systems’ controllers, let’s be real for a minute: It is grossly outdated. Sure, Sony’s argument that they found a controller that “works” is valid; but is it the best controller? No, it really isn’t.

Because the controller is the key ingredient to making any gaming experience great or poor, the Xbox 360 will never completely fall behind Playstation, because although you can play many of the same or similar games on the Playstation that you can on the Xbox, those who want the ideal gaming experience will continue to choose the console that provides the best tool for interacting with the game…and that award goes to the Xbox 360.

    1. Stubacca:

YOU HAVE TO BE TAKING THE PISS!?!

      The 360 controller:

      1. Has joiststicks that aint comfy to hold down and have lumpy bits that cause blisters.

      2. Has it’s left-stick where it’s D-pad should be. This is great I’m sure for circus folk who have one thumb shorter than the other, but it just aint practical.

      3. What kind of D-pad is that? It feels cheap and nasty. Like Paris Hilton.

      4. It takes AA batteries and the charge-pack means you’ll just sit with it wired anyways

      5. The ‘X’ button is too big and sticks out and thus gets tapped more than Paris Hilton’s ass.

      6. It’s heavier than the Titanic

It’s a crude, semi-formed abortion of a pad. If they were putting out a new pad that was decent then maybe I’d get excited but this pad is more than 2 years old! Sorry dude, that aint news!

    2. Kevin Wicks (RIP):

Personally I love the PS controller and I dont really like the 360 one.

Sony have so far sold about 230m consoles with that controller compared to 40m Xbox’s. Explain that if the controller is so much better and if the controller is so important.

    3. daryl:

      Pretty poor arguments here.

1 in particular is lives issues. A few weeks of xbox live acting up doesn’t give Sony any advantage

    4. Taka:

I personally prefer the PS controller more than the 360.

    5. Frito Lay:

      Piss poor article.

    6. Wow:

Wow Triston MyIntyre, your a fucking retard. Im sure we all know that the controller is always the deciding factor in every dumbass “Console War.”I honestly don;t know who the hell thinks of what the controller will be like when they’re buying the console…

    7. blings:

I have owned owned just about every console to date since nes…the 360 contoller rocks. I just recently picked up a ps3…mainly for movies at this point. have downloaded a few demos, but have yet to bought a game. downloaded GT demo, drakes, ratchet, and motostorm. I have had both ps1 & 2 and liked the controller for the time, but the ps3 controller does feel dated and uncomfortable and the changed r2/l2 buttons feel slippery. I will be first to admit that the d pad is not good on the 360 pad, but besides from that its the best pad I’ve ever played on. I personally love having the two analog controls positioned as they are on 360, just feels more natural for just about all generes, but especially fps…Now that I am a ps3 owner I definately would not be against SONY releasing a few other prototype control pads with an updated feel. Just my 2 cents though

    8. DK:

I do have to agree with the other arguments…. The Xbox 360’s controllers aren’t that comfortable. And I have enjoyed the way the kept the PS3 controller.

    9. Steve:

Umm The Controler is the secret weapon?
      You have to be high.
Live has been having problems off and on All year, not just teh last few weeks. Lets not forget that pesky 33% failure rate, the scratched disks, the games with DRE ( Disk read error) etc etc. The Xbox 360 is craptacular !! Now that HD DVD is dead , what is the big media draw for the 360? HD downloads will be only viable for a few with sufficient BRoadband abilities. Also donty forget, the majority of 360s have no HDD or a crappy 20gb one. Thats enough for maybe 1 HD movie.

    10. Bill:

You have got to be kidding me? The 360 is, and will continue to bitch slap sony’s ps3 paperweight. Game over, as the 360 is the hardcore gamers machine, and Xbox Live, when even having problems is miles ahead of what sony offers. Sonys online system, and the ps3 are a joke compared to the Wii, and 360. Not only that, but the ps3s controller does suck, the stick on the 360 pad is correct, you use it now days instead of the Dpad. Up is not the motion you make on the ps3 stick, its a fricken angle motion?!?! Bueller, Bueller, anyone there sony? Sony pumps lies and bs into customers heads, that’s why you sony whore will always overpay for and average pieces of equipment.

Hey, by the way, what ever happened to these options the sony marketers said was set in stone?! 8 controllers per system, all games in 1080P (Not happening on any systems but a couple of garbage games), running two screens at once, faster load times, an online system better than live”Good god, for a company that wants to storm online, you don’t even get a mic in your package!” HA HA, you play against most people, and it’s divulge of anyone speaking.

PC gamers, and Hardcore gamers play the 360. Sony has nothing left but grand tourismo, and Metal gear, it’s not worth the money, and it’s not even in the top two.

You want entertainment, you buy a 360 and a wii, end of discussion. The 360 is still outselling the ps3, and it aint even close.

    11. Tyler:

Is this a joke? The 360 is ground pounding the ps3, and pulling away. These sony fanboys needs to put down the refer sony’s hypemachine is giving them. My god, my roomate has a ps3, and even when live is having hiccups, it’s a million times better than sony’s network. There aint no free lunches, and it shows on sony’s online strategy. Dissconnects, no one talking cause you don’t get a mic in the box, and stat tracking on games is terrible…IE: you win, but afterwords the stats show you lost?!?!?!?!? The ps3 is not worth the money or time. Sony is starting to turn into bose, live off your name, and release half ass products.

    12. Jim T.:

ps3 beating 360 is a great joke. Even when the 360 has problems with it’s earlier hardware, it keeps selling, and selling, and selling. It’s because the Hardcore gaming fans chose the 360 because it outperforms every single thing the ps3 junk even tries to do. It’s a gaming maching sony, not a pawn in the next hd format war! Sony went into it pitching blue ray, and tanked what part they needed to succeed in, and that’s GAMING! They say how great it is because of the room of blue ray, but the games going over 9 gigs are because of the crap programming of the ps3, and duplicating gigs, upon gigs of data to try and shorten the terrible load times of the ps3. People don’t understand this, most of all space in these ps3 games are duplicated over and over to try and help load times, and because of the diffuculty of programming on the cell. The cell is a physics processor first and formost, NOT made for gaming! The gullible buy into sony, and as we are seeing the gullible are getting less, and less as they DON’T buy a ps3, and get a 360 or the Nintendo wii.

    13. Bryant:

ps3 better than the 360…….HA HA, great joke. PS3=garbage

    14. thailyr:

I normally dont post any comments on articles but seriously dude are you for real. This article is shit and I think all those hard years of work just went down the drain. You should be more careful of what you write next time

    15. BeeSting:

That blog write up was pretty funny. Shows how much of a gamer you really are.

      Flawless for every style? Hehe.

    16. Timothy Tripp:

I totally agree about the controller. I have both systems and really don’t like the PS3 controllers. They are just a little too small and I really prefer the 360 triggers to the L2/R2 buttons (although the L1/R1 on the PS3 and LB/RB on the 360 are virtually identical in convenience).

A much bigger gripe with the PS3 controllers though is that the damn things lose sync with the console sometimes. And when they DO, the game doesn’t seem to realize it happens. If you’re pushing right towards a cliff and then change directions but the controller has lost sync, off the cliff you go. It’s mind numbing, especially in a 3D game like Ratchet & Clank or Assassin’s Creed. The only thing I can think of is that the controller might only send signals to the console when something has changed, and that when they lose sync nothing is coming in so the console doesn’t know it.

Sony really REALLY needs to fix the controller sync problem. There’s a lot of talk on it on the forums and it makes me buy the 360 version of any cross platform game. I’m keeping my PS3 (mainly for Little Big Planet and Home) but it’s actually made me play some games with a USB cable attached, and that’s DECIDEDLY NOT A NEXT GEN EXPERIENCE!

I would have already proclaimed the HiDef winner as neither BluRay or HD-DVD if Microsoft would just do ONE thing different - they need to let me BUY movies in HD, not just rent them for 72 hours. They already do it with TV shows just not with movies. I would pay $25 a movie for lifetime DRM rights but I’m not paying $6 to rent it for 72 hours. It’s odd - on Amazon I can do this so the studios seem to allow it. I really don’t want another DVD format though and although I technically have a BluRay player in my PS3, the movies I have (including 300 and Apocalypto which are supposedly two of the best) are great but not any better than the HD videos on 360. DL HD is still up for grabs for either MS or Sony, as soon as either of them adds these features:

      1. Offer both rental and ownership of movies
      2. Add optional closed captioning
      3. Add special features comparable to what you’d get on a physical disk

Also, for what it’s worth, my opinion is that Sony’s online experience is basically non-existant. They created a TCP/IP stack and then the developers do all the work. Sometimes (like with Resistance FoM) it works well, other times (like Motorstorm and Warhawk) not so much. Hopefully Home will make things a little more standard if it ever actually comes out. The Live experience on 360 may not be perfect, but it’s pretty consistent and despite last week’s outage has been very close to 100% reliable for me.

    17. Kendall:

the argument of the controller is just.. stupid sorry for that, but if a my console fails burn or crash like the 360 i think the last thing people care is about how good is the controller
sorry but THIS ARTICLE is LAME
      360 secret weapon = a CONTROLLER!?
      mmmmm

    18. brian:

You must be joking. The PS3 controller is way better than the XBOX 360’s controller. The 360 controller’s D-pad feels cheap. The joysticks in their positions don’t make FPS’s that accurate. I should know I’ve played Halo 1 - 3 since the beginning (GT: sir brian , sir brian ii). The controller feels heavy and its a bother for my fingers feeling the big ass battery area underneath the controller in those intense battles in halo. When it comes to fighting games the PS3 controller is way better hands down. But Sony should fix the damn triggers. Like the person earlier said your fingers slide off. Whatever thats my 2 cents. Take it or leave it.

    19. jaime:

microsoft sold 11 millions xbox 360 the first year
microsoft sold 6 millions xbox 360 the second year

its really clear the sales are going down

i dont think the secret weapon work the last year

    20. dumb:

live was down for 2 weeks and all of a sudden sony has the advantage, stop smoing crack.

    21. Poof:

Im not tryna piss off the ps3 fanboys but i honestly believe that the 360 controller is indeed far superior compared to the ps3 controller… the analog sticks are loose and the controller is light and feels incredibly cheap… 360 all the way~!

    22. Poof:

but still i dont think either one of the controller is that good or bad that itll ultimately decide the fate of its console

    23. Nevik:

Whole bunch of crap wrong with this article and some of the responses. First of all, Triston, if the the Xbox 360’s future looks dim to you, something must be wrong with you eyes. Microsoft released some incredible numbers last week about the number of 360s sold to date (~17 million), the number of Halo 3 copies sold and the attach rate for the console. Xbox 360’s outlook is very good. The media has been predicting doom and gloom for the console for the last couple of months, but I just don’t buy it.

Sure, PS3 is going to have a good 2008. It is going to have some good titles out, and I look forward to playing them. But any game that is a multiplatform game, I will be playing on the 360. Xbox owners spend a lot of cash on games, and that means that Microsoft has an interest in keeping the platform going strong.

Steve, the majority of 360’s do have HDDs. Get your facts straight. Just because MS sold a version without a hard drive, doesn’t mean everyone bought that one.

I personally think the 360’s controller is more comfortable, but I have big hands, so….. Other pluses for the controller: auto off after 15 minutes, hot swappable battery packs, vibration. My PS3 controller feels like it is about to fall apart most of the time.

    24. Cool:

LOL the controller? so the xbox controller is better for shooters? again it’s a niche market for FPS, just like the PC, you can’t win with one piece of the pie.

However, the PS controllers have always sucked imo.

    25. Razor:

LOL did someone say that us PS3 owners are producing a rubbish argument…..LOL Microsoft’s big killer news is that there controller rocks….its been out for 2 years people aren’t going to suddenly go “yeah Microsoft your right, screw playstation the controller is the important thing” Now how can the PS controller suddenly feel outdated…..our hands haven’t evolved and now suit a 360’s…….As a person said before me its worked with the 200+ million consoles sold before it so why not now. I love my PS3 and my 360 controller is in no way better for FPS’s, the analogue movement isn’t as sharp and the controller is far heavier. If anything its sluggish…..this seems like a pathetic last chance to get a few more sales……the 360 has nothing going for it anymore: Live sucks, 18-20 exclusives coming PS3’s way this year, Failure rate, Not a potential console, Loud and looks retro. You 360 fan boys stick with halo and we will play some good games like FF XIII and MGS4

    26. Scott:

I have both the PS3 and the Xbox 360, personally I don’t think that the 360 is superior, but I think they are about even. The PS3 controller (without rumble) has a very long battery life, is super light, and doesn’t require extra batteries. The 360’s controller is heavier (I do like the weight) but I do not feel that it is more comfortable then the PS3’s. Also, rumble is coming back to the PS3 and their newer controller is heavier from what I heard so that might work better for me.

    27. eric jarvis:

Exorbent ammount of money for online play?? I don’t know how a whopping $4 a month to get literally hundreds of extra hours of gameplay out of games is unreasonable. Yes Sony provides free online play but they also have no standards with publishers which is why quality online play on the PS3 is limited to a handfull of games. I own both consoles and love them both but this is one area where microsoft is dominating. I’ll gladly pay the $4 a month for a superior online experience

    28. ZeroOnyx:

      2 things

      1) M$ controllers have always & will continue to SUCK.

      2) Sony better never change theirs.

    29. Razor:

To Nevik: WTH I wouldn’t say that there numbers are incredible considering they are sales to retail and they will all be returned anyway……..17 million in two years is great but not as good as you make it out to be…..PS3 has sold more than half of 360’s sales in one year and it had no killer returning series titles to offer, IT SOLD WITHOUT GREAT SOFTWARE . The halo figures released by them are completely fishy because the most talked about news is how many copies taken back, yes its sold around 7 million but at least 1 million copies have been returned not to mention the amount of special edition copies that were returned and replaced. The outlook is bleaker than you obviously see. Now that Blu-ray is set to win the format war, there will be a drive for playstation 3’s……360 fan boy go play halo.

    30. Truth:

Too many drama queens commenting on here.

Steve, please tell me when XBL has been had problems in the last year?? The service has been running strong for 5 years and only recenetly they’ve had issues, which will be fixed soon but I’m sure no matter what it won’t be fast enough for the fanboys.
The 360 launched with bad hardware but the problems have been fixed internally with the additional of a heatsync and also motherboard revisions. The original launch batch is still in circulation so of course you will continue to hear about failures. If anything, yes this was MS’s biggest mistake and they’ve paid dearly by having to fork out 1billion to supply a 3year warranty for any system that suffers from the RRoD failure. The DRE problems you are talking about are NOT a widespread problem. I’ve gone thru 2 PS3’s since launch due to the Blu-Ray just stop reading disc’s all together. Just do a YOUTUBE search to see all the BR drive problems people are having. It’s especially prevelant in the 40gig version with many coming DOA. The HDD issue is a non-one when it comes to Video. MS simply offered a choice, if you get a Core/Arcade you know what you are getting. Believe it or not many people don’t care about movies, HD, etc and the Arcade SKU offers people who just want to game without all the extra BS a cheaply priced entry point into a gaming. The Wii is a shiny example of how people like YOU are in the minority! All Pro and Elite SKU’s come with an HDD and when the target audience for these are the ones who will connect to Live and download video.(Pro costs less than the PS3). Also, the nice thing about the Video marketplace is you can start an HD download and in about 30sec start watching it so bandwidth/time isn’t a big factor for people with Broadband. You only rent the HD movies so storage isn’t an issue.. For TV you actually purchase it but you can easily download several shows and delete as needed and redownload if you want to view again.. Like I said, you don’t have to wait all night for your download to finish only about 30 secs for it to start.

PS: I have 2 360’s both purchased around launch and neither have given me a single problem. While the PS3(see above) has not been so kind. The smear campaign for Sony fanboys is disguting and they are back to their PS2 roots when they did the same crap. To this day they still downplay the horrible epidemic that was the PS2 laser problems with reading disc’s(hyocrites!).

Onto the article. Live has had problems the last couple weeks, out of 5 friggen years. This in no way points to a Sony victory or that PSN is superior.. I own both systems and XBL and PSN are night and day. If you own both systems you know what I’m talking about.
The 360 controller is definately superior do the design and the position of the analog sticks but the PS3 controller has a nice DPAD which if I was to point at one problem this would be it. Buy yourself a rechargeable battery for $10 and you never have to worry about batteries. There are also charge stands available and a playncharge kit. These are extra but at least there is the option.. With the PS3 controllers there is nothing, if the battery dies you throw the controller away or prepare to open it up and do surgery.. I can’t stand having to run a USB cable from the PS3 to the controller to charge it and even more annoying that the PS3 has to be ON in order to charge it.. not to mention the cable they give you is like 3ft. long..

The 360 has better secret weapons.. One being the ability to drop the price point down or below the Wii which it will be hard for Sony to do that. Also, the biggest factor of all GAMES! Halo 3, Bioshock, Mass Effect, etc, etc are on the 360 now. That year ahead launch has it’s advantages and just like the PS2 the 360 has benefited from this with having a huge library compared to the PS3 and will continue to grow and the PS3 will always be playing catchup. How disappointed I am to think I bought a PS3 and am now still waiting as the games slowly trickel in.. Yes R&C and Uncharted are great but it’s taken forever and looks like it will be even longer with Sony first party titles being delayed until Sept/Oct of 08.. UGH! Third party games are performing better than the PS3 and with the 360 attach rate vs. PS3 and Wii the 3rd party devs are showing the love to the 360.

I could go on.. but I’ve typed too much already.. Let me just say that my 360 get’s played at my house while the PS3 is a nice dust collector most of the time. I bought a game console to play games not watch Blu-ray movies. Not saying the PS3 isn’t a great machine, it is but isn’t providing me the enterainment I would of hoped for after shelling out $600 for it.

    31. Dan:

HELLO?????? controllers deciding a console war?? Maybe that explains why the Wii is selling more than any other console! gimme a break. I have a PS3 and an XBOX. Controllers make no difference to me whatsoever. Every heard of 3rd party controllers anyways????

    32. Glenn:

Does this guy actually work in the games industry. is this his job??? clueless. Sony vs MS: get your facts right.. better yet get over it. they have both sold enough to be worthy of a purchase (both will have plenty of quality games released this year and the next). dont know why i even bothered to read another pointless comparison, thought it was actual news.

    33. Carlos (360 was rushed):

If you like the ergonomics or whatever of the 360 just buy the rubber sleeeve for the ps3 controller. It adds a bit more density to it so it doesnt feel as skinny yet you keep it’s lightness. playstation controllers havent changed since the dual analog sticks came onto the ps1.

Spme of the 360 fans make arguments withou any facts, it’s annoying. it’s funny how many of them say “you get what you pay for” when talking about the FREE online service of the ps3 but damn you guys got ripped off.

Switch over to sony, ps3 is on same exact tract as the ps3. New format for disks included, very similar sales (though no highly anticipated games have come out), and similar controllers. Sont forget that microsoft rushed to finish designing 360 becasue they knew they couldnt compete with sony.

    34. Carlos (360 was rushed):

sorry same track as ps2 ^^^

    35. Stefan:

The only thing I agree with in this article is that COD4 is a probably a bit better of an experience on the 360.

I’m amazed more people haven’t mentioned the fact that the PS3 Dual Shock 3 is finally available, even if many games don’t yet support the rumble feature.

P.S. - If anybody opinionated writers out there want to write game reviews for $5.00 a pop, please email Stefan at support@vistaproducts.net

    36. Az:

It’s an interesting attempt to read into the matter but for a general outlook, something like ergonomics and controller aesthetics are wasted.
Yes, the 360 controller is definitely better (not far better though) than the SIXAXIS, but the PS3 controller isn’t entirely poor.
Something such as this will have little bearing on sales. Rather, the most important will forever remain price and software which are the two defining traits of a gaming console as a product. Add-ons like Blu-Ray do make a larger difference as was witnessed with the PS2 and will perhaps be an increasing boon for the PS3.

    37. Brian:

The 360 controller is horrible compared to the PS3 controller. How can anyone say it’s better?

    38. lmao:

i dont believe this bullshit… 360s controls suck more ass then the games… srsly .. the left-stick where it’s D-pad should be.. i dont think they can screw it up anymore then what it already is

    39. lmao:

ps3 controls are better for playing any type of game… and they also have motion sensing which is fun to play with..

    40. jorge:

360 is trash it messes up fast its also slow. 360 is overrated halo is also overrated and online is always messing up it lagz way too much. Ps3 is way more advanced and superior than 360. Why bother playing garbage box 360 when u can play the better system the ps3. And the controllers r better on ps3 no wonder ps3 is kicking ass right now and 360 is on a downfall with no good games and graphics that cand compete at all

    41. americans think they own the world and that are better than everyone else, thats why their intolerant.:

big titties are better to hold than a stupid controler. yall need a life nerdos!

    42. James Walker:

Stubacca, as the guy who made the argument that Sony will overtake Microsoft this year… both your argument against the Xbox 360 controller, and yoru attempts to be funny, fail on a level so epically massive that I have come out of my self-imposed solitude to inform you.

The rest of you are cool, though. Seriously. I’d buy you all milk shakes if I could.

    43. Steve:

Are you serious? The 360 controller is designed for people who have a longer left thumb than their right thumb. I don’t know about you, but last time I checked my thumbs were the same length. So exactly why do some people seem to think that having offset analog sticks a good thing?

    44. Seeton:

I have heard some pretty pathetic Xbox fanboy replies so many that I dont care to even address instead I will just comment on the ignorant statement that started this whole thing. ” Ps3’s controller outdated ” mwhahahaha!!! correct me if i am wrong but last time I checked you had to put AA batteries into a Xbox wireless controller, which pretty much puts that ” wonderful” piece of hardware up there with remote controlled cars from the 80’s… PS3’s controller rechargable… out of the 2 I would say that the rechargable wireless control is by far more up to date with the times.

And as for ease of use.. wouldnt that depend on how long you were using the control you favour because when i pick a Xbox control it feels as tho there is a whole portion of the thing missing… and thats not just because of poor design its also because i have mostly played games with the Sony control.

Bottom line, in time you Xbox fans are gonna be pissed off cause you are gonna have to buy the Xbox 720 just to keep up with games that will be coming out on Ps3…. and by the way, I am a hard core gamer and anything less than PS3 feels like kiddies play time.

    45. Mark:

I agree with this, PS3 has all the ingredients, it’s quiet, reliable, now affordable, now had plenty of games and plenty of stellar exclusives, every console has got Blu-ray (now the HD defacto standard), every console has HDMI and a HDD.

As for controllers, I hate the 360 one, it feel unnatural. I like the PS3 SixAxis, but prefer the new DualShock 3, which is the same, but a little bit heavier, which seems to make it feel a bit better.

360 is doomed, in all but the eyes of a few die-hard Xbox fanboys, it’s got perhaps another year in it, this year will see the PS3 pull ahead, and leave the 360 in the smoke.

    46. JOBS:

Your preference for the 360 controller is quite arguable to say the least.

    47. Dave:

Yes the 360 controller is the most comfortable one I’ve ever held, but the choice of buttons (triggers?!) and their layout sucks for everything but FPS’s. As for it being the 360’s secret weapon, you’ve got to be smoking crack. Sony have been right not to change their controller after 10+ years, not to mention they’ve added motion sensing, something the 360’s is obviously lacking. Put the pipe down, Triston.

    48. Tony:

Sorry, but the 360 controller is not as superior as you think (at least for FPS).

I’m a big FPS gamer, and I can tell you from first-hand experience that although the 360 controller has a slightly better layout, the analog sticks are way more precise and smooth on the PS3. The analog sticks are the most important parts of a controller for FPS games, because they’re what you use to aim. If the sticks aren’t responsive enough, then the game’s controls are dead in water. Comparing both versions of COD4, the PS3 controller simply sports better, more responsive analog sticks, and that’s what actually gives the PS3 a leg-up over the 360. I have a strong feeling that, if the two systems were ever to go head-to-head in COD4, 360 player versus PS3 player, the PS3 players would win more games.

    49. commodore:

The 360 controller is so fat and uncomfortable, the PS3 controller is skinny and very easy to manage, unless you have lanky fingers (which I do), but still I manage. The PS controller has never changed, and I hope it doesn’t in the future.

    50. Morthius:

I say this every board so write this down. Remember my name, and ps3 will win. thats all. Think of it like as wager if you will.

    51. D:

So… Dreamcast should have won the console war?

Xbox controllers are nothing more than a Dreamcast controller, the number of slots is even the same.

    52. Martin:

Will you all shut up. wats the point in arguing. its never going to end. everyone has been slating the ps3 from the start, trying to pick out reasons to why the xbox 360 is better than the ps3.
Ps3 has more potential than the 360. its just microsofts pathhetic attempt to make more money they think the rule the world but they don’t.
      THE PS3 DOES!!!!

    53. SeniorGame:

I know some of you guys are ignorant and don’t really notice what’s actually going on around you. The 360 is failing, and it’s a sad thing to see. I personally own both systems and right now the ps3 is booming. It is finally getting games that I love and it won’t stop. 2008 is really Sony’s year. Also some of you have been talking about sales? oh… the 360 is sweeping the ps3 you say? hmm for the month of december the ps3 sold just over 2million while the 360 sold 1.8ish. That gap will only widen as it did from the month before; november. I’m not biased and i’m not a fanboy. I just enjoy games and it’s why I bought both systems, but in all seriousness the 360’s days of winning this far are over. Sonys name alone sold 8million ps3’s with barely any games. I only have 5ps3 games and 16 360 games. Oh and who ever wrote this article needs to go back to the drawing board, it’s obvious you had nothing to write about, had a deadline and came up with the dumbass idea that a good controller sells the whole console. If that was true I think the gamecube would have done a lot better then it did.

    54. BeeSting:

I didn’t read that long and drawn out post since it was a skewed opinion. But I did skim through and read a WEAK and non existent $600 argument.

      Lame.

    55. Richdad:

The article is given correct data. I have tried all the controllers the PS3, PS2, and that of 360 but 360 controller is quite good. I mean in burn out revenge controls where a lot more easy and fps plays very smooth, I played black on the PS2 and resistance on PS3 but the controls where not that good. It was not as fluid as that of 360. Also the qualtity of 360 controller is really good. It has not given me a single problem in 2 years. But I dont think its a very big issue but yeah if we account fps it could be.

while i always say console and controler, whatever, are a mater of choice. some prefer one, some the other. personaly the Playstation controler is the one for me. i like the simatry and find it verycomfertable to use.

IMO the xbox’s batery pack makes it uncomfertable to hold. also the D-pad is shocking. i have never seen a worse one and i usualy buy unoficial controlers. i have Splinter Cell Double Agent for my 360 (yep, i have one) and i found all too often that when i want to change to one view mode it would randomly chose one from the left or right. i made the game frustrating to play.

i disagree it is better for FPS games but that is opinion. besides iv been using the same design for about a decade so if feels like an extension of myself. i’d never use another one.

    58. Gezzzzzy:

i wont even lie, when i hold the 360 controllers, it feels good but i like my old classic PS3 controller. It fits my hands perfect and my tumb has adjusted to where the anolge stick of the PS controller and i like the feel of the buttons. However its is kind of hard while the 360 controller is kind of soft and has a better grip. O well you dont notice when your in a game and also six axis is really cool. sixasix alone kill the xbox controller and it also looks like the PS3 controller in some ways. THe LB and RB buttons and wher e nvr there xbox 1. There was no home button, it came form the PSP. xbox controller was huge and the start button and those white and black bottons on the bottem right side of the controller if a f***ed up place to put a start and select button. the PS2 had R2 L2 it was small and easy to use and was a different color then PS1. Xbox copyed thos idea essisally the LB and RB but it ok. I heard they were also makeing six axis xbox 360 controllers. If they do this it proves again microsoft is not creative and just like to copy and PASte.

    59. Sarah:

This entire article was obviously written by a die hard Xbox fanboy, but I’ll just go after his controller comments and his online gaming bull. Of course the box controller is gonna be “perfect” for shooters. If it wasn’t for shooters there wouldn’t have been an xbox or a 360. Since shooters is what xbox sells and basically all they have to thrive on they’re gonna cater to that aspect.
As far as online gaming replacing single player.. turn off halo 3 for a few hours and go to Gamestop. Only a fraction of games have online play and only a small part of those games have online play that doesn’t suck on massive levels. Yeah the Halo series has big online play, good thing to cause if it didn’t it would be just another shooter, a good one, but just another shooter and after you beat it the third time it would collect dust in a corner.
Lastly, lets not forget the PS3 has backwards compatibility already playing 75% of the existing ps1/2 games and that number will grow as the patches come out.. but I’m sure that the 360 owners love playing masterpieces of gaming from the Xbox like Drake of the 99 dragons *cough*
Oh and the rest of the X-box boys.. it outsold ps3 cause it came out first and you all spent your parents money on that first because “DUDE HALO 3!!!!!!!!!!!! I can act like a r-tard and no one can stop me LOLZ /teabag” Now that the buzz for halo has come and gone Xbox is sinking, fast, because it has no other games of mention. Hug your bricked 360s cause soon the working ones will be as good as paper weights to.

    60. OrielmFrielay:

I’d prefer reading in my native language, because my knowledge of your languange is no so well.

    61. The Future of Sega:

@ Stubacca…..Hahahahahahahahahahaha, that was HILARIOUS! I nearly choked from laughing! You’re even funnier than me kid! :)

But honestly I think the design of the 360 controller is unattractive as Brittney Spears exposed vagina. The 360 looks like a big glob of 1990’s computers styles in geek wear. Except for the Halo edition and Elite, the 360 has no appeal to it whatsoever!

On the other hand, the Dual Shock 3’s thumb sticks sucks ass. Don’t expect to play Oblivion for a longtime while using that sucker :P
