Wii obliterates PS3 and Xbox 360 yet again
![]()
The Nintendo Wii has shown its dominance once again, easily outselling the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 combined in Japan.
These strong sales were helped by the success of the fitness title Wii Fit, which has sold over one million units since its December 1st release date.
In comparison, Sony sold 64,183 PlayStation 3 consoles in the same time period. Sales may have been spurred a bit after their announcement that they would soon be discontinuing both the 20GB and 60GB models in Japan. Both PS3 SKUs had already been discontinued in North America.
Microsoft, as per usual, brings up the rear. In the week of December 31st to January 6th, Microsoft sold only 9,763 Xbox 360 consoles. This is actually a 50% increase from Microsoft’s average sales figures, which hover around 5,500 units per week.
To put that in perspective, Microsoft would have to see a sales increase of 870% to match Sony’s weekly sales average. In order to match the Wii for a single week, Microsoft would need an increase somewhere in the range of 3500%.
Nintendo’s dominance isn’t solely on the hardware front, either. Half of the games features in the Top 10 software sales for the week of December 31st through January 6th, including Wii Fit, Wii Sports, Wii Play and Super Mario Galaxy.
Nintendo seems ready to continue its dominance well into 2008, and as we have speculated here at GAMER.BLORGE in recent weeks, it seems the PlayStation 3 is primed to pass the Xbox 360. But, the year is still young, so we all just have to wait and see how things pan out.
