With Blu-Ray’s victory over HD-DVD, PS3’s success will snowball past 360

January 12, 2008

With Blu-Ray’s victory over HD-DVD, PS3’s success will snowball past 360If you think that Blu-Ray’s whomping victory over HD-DVD doesn’t have dire implications for the battle between the PS3 and the 360, you’d better think again. Though the PS3 has been behind the 360 in the U.S. for quite some time, that is all about to change drastically in Sony’s favor.

Expect to see a huge shift in the video game industry following the power shift in the video media realm; here’s what you can expect:

1. Expect developers who are looking to release exclusive titles to begin shifting to the PS3’s format; Sony will more than make it worth their whiles, and with HD-DVD dead, the PS3 will be a standard commodity in more homes than the 360 or the Wii in this high-definition generation.

With those developers shifting to PS3 soon, Sony will hold more wildcard developers going into the next console generation; Microsoft will have to work even harder to secure strong exclusive titles. Just as cross-platform hot titles like Call of Duty 4 are pulling users to the Blu-Ray equipped appeal of the PS3, more and more users will switch because developers are going to cater to Sony’s whims.

2. Obviously, expect more movies to Blu-Ray, and therefore more PS3 sales. I’ve believe all along that if Blu-Ray pulled out a victory, then PS3 would see a huge increase in sales.

3. That follows into my next point, which is that 360’s are going to be hitting the GameStops as trade-ins; if you’re dying for a 360, wait a bit. Prices will have to drop if Microsoft wants to be competitive; on top of that, quality will have to improve in 360 consoles. Halo 3 isn’t enough to justify buying a poor quality gaming machine anymore.

4. Just like Vista, due to poor 360 quality, expect Microsoft to start directing the public’s attention at its next console; there’s very little chance they can save the 360’s image, and Blu-Ray equipped PS3’s are just too much competition.

What NOT to expect:

1. Don’t expect Blu-Ray disc prices to drop. No competitor means monopoly on the market; Unless the media giants are feeling benevolent (and when have they ever acted in such a way), you’re still going to spend a pretty penny on a Blu-Ray disc. All those discounts to encourage adoption will probably dissipate.

Finally, don’t expect the controversy over console supremacy to end; just because the PS3 is going to take the cake doesn’t mean Microsoft doesn’t have tricks left up its sleeve (or a new console in the works, which is more likely).

  1. americans think they are better than everyone else in the world.:

I agree but i dont see msoft coming with a new console just yet. what message would it send to the gaming world… lets remember the ps2 wasnt the most advanced of the 3 but it still sold more… i dont know, not gonna make any prediction here… im not an analist or anything so il just give my opinion. i think the xbox 360 isnt going to die just yet. too soon i think. many ppl are still buying it and playing it. lets see what happens 5 years from now.

  2. chris:

Microsoft will just release a Blu-ray add-on for Xbox 360, just as they currently do for HD-DVD. Problem solved.

  3. ken:

When are you Sony Fanboys going to realized that people buy console to play games. 360 has dominant the ps3 is the usa and I don’t see why it would stop now. I remember when sony had two differnt price cuts, and fanboys said that the war is over, look what happen to that. ps3 is a great system, but just because warner went with blueray will not be a factor in this race. (Do you think Jo Bob is sitting at home wating for a console to win the HD format war?) NO, people just want to good price and great games.

  4. Exgamernation:

Nice article. YEAH….STICKIN IT TO THA MAN!!

  5. Brian:

I don’t care if Blu-ray movies drop in price. If I can watch them on my PSP too then I’ll start buying them. That was a great idea Sony had. I was looking for a good reason to pay a few dollars more for Blu-rays. That’s a great one.

  6. James:

What a fool! Who wrote this article? PS3 is old news. It’s all about the downloads…Everyone knows this! Sony thinks that controlling the video market will have an effect on the gamers. Even though I own a HDDVD player, its not the main reason I bought my 360. Movies and video games are being downloaded on the 360 in High Def as we speak. Microsoft is leading all consoles in this. So you can have both HDDVD and BLURAY….it’s all about the downloads…watch and learn from the most powerful software company in the world!! hahahahaha

  7. steve:

blu-ray’s whomping victory over HDDVD? speaking a little early?
360 has better games than ps3. whatever movie company goes to blu-ray doesn’t change the fact that 360 has better games.
If the ps3 had halo 3, I would buy it. no other game justifies getting a ps3.

  8. maximus:

u must be smoking something to think downloads is coming.. wont happen 4 another 5yrs atleast. we dont have the broadband speeds to download hd contents.. how long u think u going to download 20-50 gig movies.. u just wasting your time and data u might as well go and buy a copy at the shop.. anyway 5yrs time there be new console coming out i wouldnt be suprised the new xbox got a bluray built in and all games in bluray format..

  9. anonamys:

So far I like the games on PS3 more. Resistance, Uncharted, Warhawk, Stardust HD and Motorstorm are great games to name just a few exclusives. I don’t see much on 360 to make me envious. Some of the best multiplatform titles are also better on PS3 as well such as Oblivian, COD4 and Dirt, and that trend will continue with the big games of 2008. I am pretty sure Blu Ray will further push PS3 sales once HD DVD is out of the picture but even without it the momentum has already shifted.

  10. antler:

Downloads? Do you serious want DRM that prevents you watching something you paid for on other devices? Atleast with a Blu-ray movie I can take it anywhere I want!

  11. finnegan:

hd-dvd and blu-ray account for LESS THAN 1% of total sales in movie and game related media in the world wide spectrum. news flash to whoever wrote this article, the people who care about and/or know about the hd-format war are very few and far between compared to the regular people who just go buy dvds at the local best buy. while warner going to blu-ray might be the final blow in the format war, that doesn’t mean ANYTHING for microsoft. if microsoft had their way, both hd-dvd and blu-ray would lose and everything would become digital downloads. in THAT war, hd-dvd and blu-ray are on the same side, and their competitor is solid state drives. think about it, you have a few million people who are jumping to hd-dvd and blu-ray and supporting one or the other as the next format. there are hundreds of millions who are already using digitally downloaded medias as their main source of entertainment. portable hard drives have made ways for media players like ipods and zunes, downloadable content from xbox live and torrenting has increased local content for everyone who has an internet connection and a hard drive. in THIS war, blu-ray and hd-dvd have to take down a powerful competitor: the hard drive. news flash, that war was over a long time ago. hd-dvd is dead, but that means nothing for the xbox 360.

  12. Mark:

Well no, Chris, it isn’t problem solved for Microsoft. They’ve literally put millions of dollars behind HDDVD, and it’s all down the tubes. They’ll then probably have to pay Sony to put a Blu-ray player in their console, and Sony will then get royalties from every Blu-ray sold.

  13. Exactly.:

A little harsh, but you’re right.

You see the success that Sony had with their untested Ip’s in their first year, ALL hits. It’s incredible, Im really looking forward to 2008.

Sony is pulling out all the stops, their outselling the 360 worldwide week by week and with the amazing games coming out…it’s over lol, Sony’s got it in the bag.

Resistance2 looks soooooooo good btw lol!

  14. Jim:

That’s the silliest article of the year (already in Januarary, WOW!) *LOL*

Blu-ray does not drive PS3 sales because PS3 is a game system and actually GREAT GAMES sell consoles.

I can’t follow one single argument from your list, let’s see:

    1. “Just as cross-platform hot titles like Call of Duty 4 are pulling users to the Blu-Ray equipped appeal of the PS3″

Ok, so you get THE excactly same gaming experience from an Xbox 360 DVD and a PS3 Blu-ray… what does this tell us?

    2. Obviously, expect more movies to Blu-Ray, and therefore more PS3 sales.

Again, why should I buy overpriced (EXPENSIVE) Blu-rays when I get $10 DVDs?

    3. The whole quality problems around Xbox 360 already affected their sales IMHO, but the still outsell PS3 at least 2 to 1… what does this tell us?

    4. That’s a fanboy statement, not even an argument.

    *LOL* Funny read.

  15. Bigfella:

Tristan must be on some really good weed. If Blu Ray wins this war, then Microsoft will make a Blu Ray player – problem solved. Both systems will be on equal footing in terms of video playback, and 360 will continue to dominate with it’s excellent exclusives (which some are shared with PCs) that will never hit the PS3.

  16. ZenMasta:

lol I agree clearly an article written by a fanboi

  17. Kevin Wicks (RIP):

The vast majority of the people who bought PS2’s arent hardcore gamers, they are normal people who have never visited a gaming website or know anything about the next gen war. They buy a games console the same way they buy a TV or washing machine. What matters to them are brand, price and reliability.

In terms of brand and reliability the PS3 wins hands down. Unlike the 360 there haven’t been scare stories about the PS3 all over the news and the brand is the same one they have been enjoying for the last 14 years. The only plus point for the 360 is price but given that Xbox is a far less popular brand in the publics eye and is highly unreliable that’s not enough to make any difference.

The people who say consumers buy a console for the games are absolutely right and that is why the PS3 will trounce the 360. A consumer knows that any they buy console will have games and the kind of people I’m talking about are the ones who have been playing all the multiplatform stuff or the games that are still exclusive to the PS3 like Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, Tekken, Gran Turismo, Jak & Daxter, Sly Cooper, Ratchet & Clank, The Getaway, Wipeout and all the others. Why would they give up the brand they have been using for all those years to buy a different brand which is unreliable and hasn’t got the games they like? The simple answer is that they wont.

According to the last few weeks figures on VGChartz the 360 is currently the worst selling console in the world, sitting behind the DS. Wii, PSP, PS3 and Sonys 7 year old PS2. All of the other consoles sell at least twice as many units per week outside the US as they do in the States but the 360 actually sells fewer units outside the US than it does at home.

  18. laurence:

u xbox 360 people sayin u wudnt be suprised if they got blu-ray are wrong for 1 reason……
sony made blu-ray, do u think they are going to licence it out to microsoft?

  19. Arron:

WOW! – This guy does not know what he is talking about!

I have a PS3 and a 360, and I can honestly say that I have yet to see a PS3 game outperform a 360 equivalent. In fact, I returned my PS3 version of PES2008 and bought the 360 version instead – which performed better.

To say ‘due to poor 360 quality’ makes this guy sound like a 12 year old fan boy. Poor poor attempt at journalism.

I agree with what others have said – GREAT GAMES sell game consoles, not BluRay/HDDVD capabilities. I think the PS3 will do ok, but I can’t see it overtaking the 360 anytime soon.

Sony made a mess of the launch, and the key games did not deliver. There are too many Wii and 360 owners out there now for Sony to come back and dominate the market within this generation. And I for one feel that it has been a healthy development for the gaming industry.

  20. mikel:

i think blu ray is next gen dvd. Just because US and UK has fast broadband, doesnt mean all the other country has. If u want to look to the future, better look at the whole world. internet might be fast enough in another 5yrs or so, but sony will start distributing downloads earlier than expected because they know if they didnt start now, they will win this gen format war, but MS will takeover when internet is fast enough in other countries.

  21. Steve:

The 33% failure rate and the fact that the 360is still getting the RROD, thats getting people to switch to the Ps3. And now that Blu-ray has won, that will draw even more buyers. The author is probably correct, Consumers like things that do more then just one function. With the adaptability of the PS3,its drawing in more then just gamers.
Digital Downlaods have a LOOOOONG way to go, the broadband infrastructure would have to be overhauled to the cost of over 100 Billion before High Def Movies can be downloaded by the Masses. And even then, who wants to DL a movie that you can only watch for a Day, when you can buy or rent teh disk and watch it where you want when you want?

  22. greg:

    Agreed, most defiantly a fanboi!
Yes, there are some games that look good that are coming to the PS3, but will they be good? Time will only tell if these game hold the pre-glamor rating!

Its true however if Blu-ray is going to sell like crazy, and millions of people are going to give up buying $12 DVD’s for $30 Blu-ray MS will just make a add on Blu-ray drive for the 360.
Yes MS will have to pay some kind of royalty to the Blu-ray founders but its not Sony, in fact there a about 12 of them I won’t go into listing them all. I bet MS is in kahoots with over half of these Blu-ray founders and don’t think they won’t want to work out a deal including Sony!

Why would anyone want to piss off the largest computer development software company in the world over a disc format!

Think about it this way, lets use Sony as the manufacture since its the topic of the subject.
Sony uses MS for Vista, XP don’t think they already don’t pay MS $$ for use on laptops ext…
I really don’t think Sony is going to start using Linux or Leopard when they are both dying software!

  23. Bruno:

“u must be smoking something to think downloads is coming.. wont happen 4 another 5yrs atleast. we dont have the broadband speeds to download hd contents.. how long u think u going to download 20-50 gig movies.. u just wasting your time and data u might as well go and buy a copy at the shop..”

THE FUTURE IS NOW!! I download blu-rays (~28 gig) off usenet at 14 MBPS; that’s the whole movie, uncompressed, in about four hours. With HD compression, I start downloading a 9 gig film, and by the time I sex up my lady and make a snack, it’s done.

Did I mention it’s free? Get your skillz on, kiddies…

This is with cable modem internet premium @ $67/mo., W/O the cable service (your cable internet speeds double without the digital cable bandwidth – Hack FTA satellite for your HDTV needs instead!!)

  24. Jake:

Response to “Chris”: Sony owns Blu-ray; if Microsoft took the opportunity to buy off Blu-ray to their Xbox360, it would end up in (most likely to least likely):
    1. Microsoft would get rejected, and/or release a new console by 2009 or 2010. I’m sure they will release a new console by the end of 2009 to the fall of 2010.
    2. In the event Microsoft would pay, they would have to pay Sony 50-95% (I’d guess around 80%) of its console profits of the Xbox360 to Sony, because the “blu-ray’s” blue laser is the whole reason the product would be so costly. Not to mention the price raise on all Xbox360 consoles to $500-600 because they have no experience in developing blu-ray consoles (just as Sony had difficulty at first).
    3. Microsoft would join forces with Sony in creating a console, or Microsoft would just quit on console building. [because] it’s enough that Microsoft created an Xbox when they have the potential to be making much better computers and charging seven to eight times the cost, but the sad thing is is that they are DRIVING AWAY COMPUTER GAMING IN THIS CONSOLE WAR. They are supporting a cause they don’t want to dab into.

  25. Kevin Wicks (RIP):

    @ Jake

    Sony do not own BluRay.

  26. greg:

Sony does not own Blu-ray do your reading first get educated before you say Sony owns Blu-ray!
As I said before it is owned by a number of manufactures; not just Sony!

  27. greg:

I also agree HD downloads are coming.
I currently download some HD content now!
Its only going to happen more and more.

  28. Shmiggler:

Sony doesn’t “own” blu-ray. It was a joint project b/t so many different japanes companies that it escapes me. Matsushita, Sony, panasonic, pioneer, etc. etc. , it wouldn’t be like MS buying Blu ray rights from just SONY, so be aware of that first.
HD-DVD was an offshoot of blu-ray backed by Toshiba, IBM, and MS b/c they didn’t agree on the same standards back when they were drawing the whole thing up so they split from blu ray.

This isn’t as simple as Sony vs. MS, there’s a lot of other stuff involoved.

ALso, for those of us (looking at you Bruno) who are already watching HD for free, hell, i could care less who won.

Time to ask someone to show you how kiddies :-) .

  29. Guy:

your article has a lot of holes in it.

    rubbish

ok first of all the 360 has a worldwide installed base of almost 17 million. xbox live has with its 10 million subscribers, halo 3 has sold 8.1 million copies. sony doesnt own blu ray if they did wouldnt they be the only compant to have a player, ive seen many many other companies with players. where am i getting here, movies doesnt matter, games does, i mean for the xbox 360 these are the following games coming out just this 2008 year: ninja gaiden 2, gears of war 2, fable 2, alan wake, dead or alive 5 , and all these are exclusives. yes ps3 has some good games coming out like msg4, killzone 2(i dont know about this one, may look pretty but suck just like heavenly sword), little gay planet(no guy will everrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr play this piece of crap, and they are launching it as one of their ‘top 2008′ games, wat a joke. all comes down to games, and for my money thats what matters, and the 360 has the best games now and coming in the future, and oh yeah:

halo 4 , enough freakin said.

    ps3 has 9 million
ps3 online has only only only 2 million subscribers and this is free , their top selling game has been call of duty 4 with 1.3 million copies sold(xbox cod4 has sold 3.7 million, wow!)

now triston u are a major league sony fanboy. your system will not come back, its a good system, but its 8 million suscribers short, yes they are coming out with home, etc, but all comes down to games. there is not one game like halo 3 that would make me go out and buy a system just for a game, people bought an estimated 1.5 million xbox’s with halo 3 in the first 2 days of release. ps3 im sorry to say it will have to sit in the backseat this time, 2 price cuts, free game, free movie, nothing has even touched the momentum the 360 has. sorry triston, dont let the door hit u

  32. Weston:

I agree with a lot of the comments that games sell gaming systems. Case in point: the Wii. The Wii has outsold the PS3 and the 360 consistently since its debut. And here’s an interesting fact…IT DOESN’T EVEN HAVE A DVD DRIVE! People buy the wii because it’s a gaming machine. People buy the the XBOX 360 not because it has an HD DVD peripheral, but because they have great games. If Blu Ray does come out the winner, PS3 sales will increase, but what history has proven is that what sells gaming systems is good exclusive games, something that the PS3 has failed to produce after more than a year of market exposure. Right now the two biggest exclusives are MGS4 (a game riddled with delays) and Little Big Planet (a title only popularized because Sony watched their big name exclusives go to the 360 as well).

  33. MeTaLlIcA:

who cares about blu ray winning over hd-dvd its a video games console not a movies console its and microsoft can easily make a blu ray add on but if it comes to me i dont give a shit about blu ray or hd dvd i can easily buy any movie out there on 2 dvds just move 2 meters every 2 hours and change the dvd any way i dont give a shit about movies format its all about games and microsoft making a new console now thats some retards shit its been out for only two years now what u think ms is stupid enough to make a console that will die in 2 years even talking about hardware x360 have more ram and a much better video card when ps3 only have a better(not exactly the best for video games)cpu so ms and xbox 360 all the way

  34. L:

Well thats not the only reason its gonna kill the 360.. 360 still develops on standard dvds.. which as we all can tell is pushed to the limit.. Gears was thier best looking game and it doesnt compare to Uncharted.. Ps3 games are on par with 360 and all devs had said they are only using 20% of the ps3s power.. with blu ray they have more room to work with unlike the 360 and thier standard dvd

  35. mark:

To everyone who’s saying that HD downloads will take out Blu-ray.
I was reading an interesting article in Business Week from June 25, 2007 about the recent recovery of the telecom industry. Among other things, it points out that although the size of the Internet’s bandwith has doubled in the last 5 years, the percentage of usage has increased from slightly less than 50% to more than 70%. And that increase came about as crappy-quality Youtube videos clog up bandwidth. That being said, do you honestly think that the Internet could handle hundreds of millions of 50 GB 1080p downloads at the same time? I can assure you that that would put the bandwidth at well over 300% capacity (ie, crash it). No, HD downloads are not going to happen in the near future bcause the Internet simply does not have enough available bandwidth. Also, the fact that it is far easier to take an optical disc to a friend’s house rather than download a movie onto a 120 GB flash drive won’t help downloads become mainstream either. (oh wait, you can’t even get a 16 GB flash drive… my bad)
However, I will agree with you that this article was written by a fanboy and Warner’s announcement won’t provide more than a modest 20-50k/week increase for the PS3. (and it will probably be much less than that)

  36. cherdman:

This is the second biased article that I’ve read from this site in as many days. What is the deal with the pro-Sony/anti-MS stance? In all fairness COD4 has sold 3x as many copies on the 360 as the PS3.

I don’t think that Sony will be taking over or surging ahead anytime soon.

  37. mark:

    Cherdman,
I’ve got nothing against the 360, but I’ve got to point out that what you said is to be expected because the 360 has 3x the userbase as the PS3 in North America.

  38. G:

Wierd read. I don’t know if Blu Ray will effect that much, but, if it did:

If developers switch to Blu Ray discs (hypothetically), what would happen if SONY denied Microsoft the license for a Blu Ray drive (on the 360)? That would (in essence) kill the 360 unless games go to DL only. Or 360 owners would have to DL the games off many DVD’s to play a game.

If Blu Ray turns out to become a choice for Game publishers, this could completely tip the balance of the gaming industry.

  39. G:

Also, if Blu Ray became the media of publishers, this could (in essence) allow SONY to get out of Console production. If the money’s in publishing, and not in console production, this could be what SONY was looking for. Getting out of the console battle and just be a content provider.

  40. UNCLE TITO:

The PS3 is the overal better system, if you compare the 360 to the PS3 its like comparng a DVD to a bootleg. The PS3 is faster, smarter, and more we’ll designd. Microsoft is still in the gaming race b/c of its community, the community is amazing. BUT! wat will happen when Sony makes a community that is as good as Microsofts? can anyone say HOME??Today people are looking for more than a video game system but a Entertainment System. Idk why everyone just opens they’re eyes and actally time to play and see the difference in both systems i did and my oppinion is PS3 is a better system.

  41. Rebma Boss:

Just remember, everyone, that $100-$200 Blue-Ray players are cheaper than a PS3, so I agree with people who say that if a PS3 is purchased, IT’S FOR GAMES.

  42. 360 is king:

People can say what they want about who beats what but honestly anyone that does their homework knows that these are two very different markets movies and videogames playstation will not beat 360’s videogame lineup but will be one of the cheapest blu ray players available. most gamers don’t care abput blu this or hd that, they just want to play good games and thats were the 360 wins. I have never chosen a side but just because the ps3 is a cheap blu ray player doesn’t mean I’m going to buy it I would rather buy a stand alone blu ray player dedicated to movies and have the best of both worlds.

  43. Andy:

I’ve never read so much BS in all my life. Mass Effect,Halo3,GOW and lets not forget Bioshock. All 360 exclusives. The ps3 just hasn’t got the games and thats what GAMERS want. If I want blu-ray i’ll buy a stand alone player. As a 360 owner im looking forward to Too human, Fable2,GOW2,Alan Wake and Fallout. The ps3 is a great machine, no doubt, but it needs exclusives fast.

  44. GSS:

360 BOYS ARE BLEEDING, !! HAHAHA I LOVE THIS !

  45. Tom:

I own both consoles, and have thus far purchased many more 360 titles than PS3. Reasons for this include:

    1. Lack of PS3 titles that interest me, thus far

    2. Cross-platform titles have achievements on 360

    3. Cheaper AAA games on 360 due to “greatest hits” discounts

I purchased the PS3 as early as I did because I wanted to enjoy HD movies on my 1080p LCD monitor, and I had been holding off on buying new DVDs for quite a while, because I was waiting for HD format disks to purchase. To support my belief that others (as well as I) will move more into the PS3 camp for hardware and game purchases:

    1. If Sony can continue to get or make more AAA PS3 exclusives

    2. Many 360s have just 20 GB drives (with others having NO hard drive). Does Bill Gates actually expect HD movie downloads on such configurations? I’d have to delete all my games, save games, demos, etc to fit just one HD download (which would still need additional compression compared to HD DVD and Blu-Ray disks) on my 360.

    3. My 360, as well as 10’s of millions already sold, does not support HDMI. My monitor supports 1080p/1080i over both component and HDMI, and I was shocked to see how poorly component handled 1080i resolution (testing both connections through my HD DVR with the same movie content). It looked to be a bandwidth issue.

    4. The dramatic increase in HD monitor sales and the impending switch to HD broadcast imposed by the FCC is going to put a lot more HD monitors in consumers’ homes who, like me, are going to want the most out of their new purchases.

    5. The HD content I’ve found available via satellite (HBO, Showtime, and HD Package on Dish Network) has been very disappointing. The HD quality has been acceptable (though obviously inferior to Blu-Ray disks), but the selection has been very poor (the same movies show over and over and over–wastes hours of my time per week trying to find something new), the subtitles are very bad (needed for my bilingual wife), and I can only keep a limited number on the DVR at any one time (or pay an extra $50 for the right to hook up an external HD to the DVR). My impression is that they reserve all the good movies for PPV. So I’ve canceled the premium services and will use the money saved to buy more Blu-Ray movies…

    6. If achievements via PS3 Home become as popular as Xbox Live achievements (what’s taking Sony so long, anyway?), and there continues to be no subscription fee to gain access to the PSN.

  46. Steve:

@ Mark: COD4 has sold 3.13 million on 360, and 1.56 million on the PS3 not exactly 3:1 is it? The PS3 version has also rated better.

@ Andy: Fallout 3 is multiplatform.

What people need to realised (especially Americans) is that the Xbox is not popular outside of the states. The US may be the biggest single market, but the rest of the world is a bigger one. The US is not big enough to establish the 360 as the lead console. Just look outside your borders and see… the PS3 is selling better worldwide. Not to mention a lot of the best games are not developed in the US. You may want the 360 to win, but the statistics say otherwise.

  48. camron:

Who really cares about Blue- ray most people don’t want to spend 30 to 35 dollars on a movie that they will watch no more than 2 times. This movie crap dosent matter to the real gamers they want to play games and are not concerned about movies. Playstation in the past claims they have the biggest library of games, but so few are great and the rest are filler or just garbage not worth playing. I don’t hate Playstation, but I cant stand people who really are just full of themselves talking about a product as if they are running the company themselves and they know how the markets going. Microsoft will not give up and nethier will Sony so everyone can stop their cryin.

  49. Tom:

One thing I forgot: the PS3 is much quieter than the 360, so I would never consider the 360 for the watching of downloaded HD movies.

  50. George:

The Guy who wrote were 5 years away from HD Download is a complete idiot, who a Probably does not have Xbox Live ( Which has HD movies available to download TODAY !!!. ) or is Probaply using a Dial up connection which means he is 5 Years behind technology ( Longer even ) and is also a person who is to computer iliterate to know about Streaming. So People like that should get educated in technology and come back when they have a clue.

As for the Xbox where the heck do you think it’s going to go, Sony is still selling the PS2 for crying out loud, There are a hell of alot more 360’s out there then there are PS3’s. and a hell of Alot more games. Sony may have won the Blu ray War ( not final yet ) but Unfortunatly like the Beta VHS battle the Best technology did not win.

I have an HD DVD player and I was watching Die Hard Standard DVD and it looked freekin amazing I could not believe the quality of the up conversion it was so close to high def it was difficult to tell the difference. Movies in the future will be using better technology so that you can get awesome movies on standard def being up converted. I am not planing on sucking on the SONY nipple any time soon, I own a PSP and that is as far as I will go. They want to own a Monopoly in this industry and there tactics have been well documented. They are Crooks at SONY

Xbots form the most entertaining mob right now, you gotta give’em credit. They feed on denial, they bark loud the most hilarious non-sense when cornered with hard facts like hardware failure stats, true cost, format sales, the appalling state of the US broadband infrastructure, the mere existence of other territories or just how the massively screwy and uninspired vision they jumped in is falling apart. I guess sometimes the truth is just too much, and the mob is more appealing: it feels so good to be part of a 17M dumb ass mob! Who cares if XBL is plagued with the most retard DRM strategy, incessant downtime or even rampant racism and homophobia? ‘It’s about the games dude!’ and they don’t even realize that a ps3 tsunami is on a roll towards their shore to teach them what strategy and vision is all about.

The coats are turning, the party is over, the hang over will be painful, the humiliation will be total.

  52. Dan:

“Just as cross-platform hot titles like Call of Duty 4 are pulling users to the Blu-Ray equipped appeal of the PS3, more and more users will switch because developers are going to cater to Sony’s whims.”

CoD 4 has 3.13 million sold on 360, and 1.56 on PS3. sounds like it’s definitely the console of choice. (data from vgchartz.com)

  53. Phlegmflinger:

The PS3 has yet to shake of the stink of a failed launch. Most people still see it as:
    - too expensive,
    - all hype,
    - no games.

Its rather telling that technically inferior hardware with a clever control scheme (Wii), is trouncing it in the marketplace.
And that Xbox360 with older technology and an off-the-shelf CPU is outclassing PS3 and “Cell” in nearly every cross-ported title.

I think you’ll find most people will happily continue buying DVD’s and forgo HD disks for some time yet.

Maybe 2009 will be Sony’s year?

    …or 2010,

    2011?

It’s funny that you say: “What NOT to expect:

    1. Don’t expect Blu-Ray disc prices to drop. No competitor means monopoly on the market”

    Because… look what just happened:

Blu-ray disc titles price cut to $14.99 at Amazon
    http://news.punchjump.com/article.php?id=5392

With regards to Rebma Boss’ statement with regards to pricing: NO, I choose the PS3 because for $399 I get both a great HD games console -which can also boot Linux!- AND a high-def movies player. No other combination with stand-alone players can give me such bang for the buck.

  56. ralph:

yes i love this!…xbox fanboy rush on every ps3 article and start flaming lmao i guess this people are just really pissed when they always read a good news about ps3, anyway that one dude said games sells the console not blue ray or HD dvdvvd..”True” and the ps3 has them all MGS,GT,FF,Teken and many more..and true the 3shity has all the good game in it’s 2 years but who give a crap ps3 got some good game in it’s 1st year more than 360, and 360 only has gears in first year and don’t tell me dead rising lmao!=D, most developers are now choosing ps3 over 360 btw “cough” midway “cough” rockstar (L.A noire wich is not multiplat because team bondie uses london studio the maker of the GETAWAY so stop about this rumor)….most AAA game on ps3 is not out yet of course but it’s coming =D..and if MS is brave enough to go head to head with sony and released their game in same date as MGS4,GT5,FFXIII that would be the dumbes thing they did in their marketing this franchise did more than halo does (over 10mill each) so don’t smile and say halo is in the best in history of gaming!!! that would be retard only U.S maybe but those franchise i mention above did better..if all of you xbox fanboy didn’t know btw gears 3 might go to ps3 after they make 2 well thats about 5 years from now but give a crap…end of the story

zizou president: I do’t know what Cult you are from but Man You need some meds buddy … Have you been hearing voices ? I’d go see someone about your complex. Xbox 360 kicks the PS3 out of the water the only thing that it beats the 360 on is it’s Multimedia, and I bought my 360 to play Games, not watch movies…Xbox Live makes PS3’s online play look like those old dial up systems from about 20 years ago. 360 Beats PS3 hands down, and you can read about that anywhere on the net. Lair was a piece of Crap game, so was heavenly sword, Plus Xbox has more than double the amout of exclusive games, Plus on almost all multi platform games, I have already finished them andmoved on to the next new release while you Playsttion 3 people sit back and wait for the same release to come oout. Games are alot more difficult to develop for the PS3 thats why games always come out on 360 first. Also if you look up the stats 360 Graphics chip almost doubles the frame rate of the PS3. and Cell is not even utilized to its fullest capacity, Cell by the way will not help the frame rate at all. Face it 360 crushed the PS3 unless you are using it as a DVD ( Blu Ray ) player.

  58. GroverFD:

point 4 – there is no ‘next’ console for Sony, MS or Nintendo (notice there are not even R&D for ANY of these companies – same time at previous console there was already patents and news of all the consoles underway). The ‘next’ console is going to be generic. An agreement between the most powerful publishers (EA, Activision and THQ) have already been signed with Sony, MS and Nintendo to organise this to happen. And beleive it or not, it is going to be Cell powered (IBM already hold the contracts for the three to build these new consoles).

So thankfully we will finally end all this fanboy BS ppl keep spewing and a console will become a normal electronics device as standard as a TV or DVD player, or a radio.. very very very nice (esp for publishers and developers who have been asking for this for years).

So dont get all pent up about ‘whos winning what’.. in the end.. consumers will win because there will be a standard system (still with brand variance), and developers wont have to spend 3x the money for one product, and get 3x the audience.. all good for everyone…

  59. The Future of Sega:

FINALLYYYYYY!!!!! THANK YOU SONY!!! Kick the mother fuck out of Micorsoft’s ass :)

  60. JD:

OK… that was funny… an Upconverted DVD looking “just as good” as its High Definition counterpart… oh wait… my phonograph played through my receiver sounds “just as good” as my digitally mastered native audio recording… i bet you’ll also try to argue that an “Upconverted” VHS signal looks just as good as a digitally mastered DVD… LMAO XD… I needed that chuckle… thanks

  61. maximus:

love these xbox fanboys they loose the hddvd format now they crying out 4 hd downloading.. wake up will ya.. xbox live demonstrate to u over the holiday period were not ready 4 it..

  62. Dee:

id like to see the source that blu ray is a sure shoe in before i trust any of what this article is saying. there isn’t really any backup to what’s being said. it seems like its just a bunch of opinions: “expect blah blah blah” …. WHY SHOULD I !?

  63. xbox-ps:

I think it is time to set the record straight about sales outside of US from someone from Europe.

Xbox360 is still outselling PS3 even with all the reductions in price and free games/blue ray movies and as the 360 was released over 18 months before that is very good.

I have nothing against PS3 as I own one, but I also own 360 as well and it has to be said not one game have matched the graphics or speed of the 360.

I do hope PS3 will produce better games, but as they are harder to develop for the 360 will still continue to dominate the market, well maybe except for the Wii (which I also own).

Anyway to some up the PS3 will do ok in the long run but will always be behind 360, well that is until the next xbox console then it will be goodbye from all current gen systems.

Keep them coming for us all to love or hate.

  64. Danny:

I have been laughing my ass off reading all these responses. Really… all these Microsoft fan’s must be pizza delivery boys because there is no way you can be even remotely educated. My first DVD player was a ps2.. you can bet damn well it was a huge selling point for me. With all these HDTV’s being sold people are going to want to HD movies. Blu-Ray is a huge success. Downloads? Replacing movie librarys? anytime soon? i’m not even going to argue how utterly stupid that is for any near future.

As far as games go right now its about an equal playing field, but an Xbox is still a horrible investment. The day is approaching where normal DVDs will not hold a game. Microsoft is going to need a next gen format, thats a fact. Do you honestly thing Sony is going to let Microsoft put in a blu-ray player? So what.. they use a worthless format – HD-DVD?

Also, a hard drive will need to be standard. Uncharted has NO loading times. Thats a huge selling point. To compete with that, Microsoft has to ask all the people that have the base model (which is a lot) to buy a hard drive add on.
Buy a hard drive and a worthless next gen format add on. How much did your xbox really cost now? Its probably gonna break anyway.

Are you people even reading the facts on this? I saw a few people saying they HD-DVD isn’t dead yet. Absurd. Major chains are saying they aren’t going to give much shelf space to a dying format. All these studios behind blu-ray.. what does HD-DVD even have left. They are so done.

Okay, for all you brainiacs that think the next Gen format has nothing to do with the consoles (which is idiotic) lets talk about the games. How in the world can Xbox compete with, Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, Killzone 2, God of War 3, little big planet, Resistace 2, The agency, Grand Turismo.. etc??? I mean really. What is there to even look forward to.. Gears 2? Shit, the only thing xbox had going for it was the fact that it supports HD-DVD and at one point it had a shot at being the next gen format.

you can call me a fanboy if you want. But I’d have an xbox if the situation was reversed. Its just a plain fact, xbox isn’t a good investment. Halo 3 as the best game ever? Kill yourself. Go play COD4. So much better.

  65. maximus:

i love these fanboys they make judgement on games they never play.. i owned both systems.. halo3 will kick cod4 ass anytime. i mean cod4 has no fun factor at all,is pretty boring i couldnt bothered finishing the game, it might have some cool weapons upgrade thats about it.. i thought fanboys only owned 1 system so how can u judge the other system games that u never play “dumbass”. i do agreed the ps3 is a better piece of hardware then the xbox360 thats y i give the xbox to my brother, couldnt put up with the noises anymore..

  66. jo:

i think their both great counsels. one isnt better than the other. the both have their likes and dislikes.

  67. clif:

Those who are saying that the success of Blu-ray will not have a significant and positive effect on the success of the Playstation 3 are just deluding themselves. Look, I frequent a lot of home theater websites (like avsforum.com) and I can tell you that a whole lot of people have already bought the PS3 for its Blu-ray capabilities, and that was before Blu-ray’s success was a sure thing (as it is now). Many of those home theater enthusiast also reported buying games for their PS3’s, (I mean why not if you already got a game system thrown in for free). Now that Blu-ray’s defeat of HD DVD is virtually guaranteed, we can definitely expect many more people to buy the PS3 for its Blu-ray capabilities, especially since it is one of the most advanced and future-proof HD players available.

And for those of you who doubt Blu-ray’s victory over HD DVD, take a look at these facts:
    1. Warner Bros., the largest Hollywood studio, said in early January, it would support Blu-ray exclusively.
    2. Best Buy will very soon only carry Blu-ray titles (no HD DVD)
    3. Walmat just announced the same thing
    4. Ditto for Netflix
    5. Blockbuster only carries Blu-ray
    6. Blu-ray has nearly all the studio support and the vast majority of the CE hardware manufacturers.

Its over folks, no real argument there.

Like several others have mentioned, I too bought a PS2 partially because of its DVD capabilities. Well, it at least made it an even more attractive value proposition. Likewise, the PS3’s Blu-ray capabilities made buying the PS3 a no-brainer. I also have an XBOX 360 but it really didn’t feel like such a good deal, especially after I got the red-ring-of-death on the second day of owning it. (I have never had a problem with my PS3 BTW) My two cousins didn’t even know about Blu-ray when they bought their PS3s but now they are two of the most voracious purchasers of Blu-ray movies that I have ever seen.

So this idea that so many people have that if you are a gamer you only buy a system for its games is just nonsense. As if to be a gamer you can’t have any other interests in life…sheesh.

And I wanted to make a comment with regard to all the claims that downloading of HD media is going to replace disc based HD media in the near future, well that is just absurd. For a whole slew of reasons.
    1. Its inconvenient (10 + hours to download 1 movie off XBOX Live is ridiculous)
    2. Lack of sufficient storage capacity. Even with compressed-all-to-hell video quality @ 5-10GB how many movies can you fit on your harddrive? Especially if it is your 20GB XBOX 360 harddrive that already has a bunch of stuff on it? 1, 2, or maybe 3?
    3. Current bandwidths could not support it as the dominant form of HD media distribution all over the world.
    4. Cost. I mean why would I want to pay $5.99 to rent a HD movie from Comcast VOD when I can get unlimited Blu-ray rentals a month for just $8.99 a month. Or hell, for about three or four times that price I can just buy the movie and own it in pristine quality for all time.
    5. And the biggest reason of all…QUALITY! Why in the world would I bother to download a movie if I am looking for superior quality. The downloads look like complete and utter crap compared to the same titles on Blu-ray. They are in 720p instead of 1080p, are filled with digital compression artifacts, and have low quality audio. I can honestly say that my upconverted DVDs look and sound better than those downloads overall.

As for whether the next XBOX will use a Blu-ray drive or will, as some people have claimed, use only digital distribution and a hard drive. Well, it is absurd to think that it will use anything but a physical disk format (Blu-ray or something similar). First of all, XBOX 720 (or whatever it will be named) would have to have something like a 3 terabyte harddrive to even start to have a practical amount of storage for storing games, saves, pics, vids, etc., and such a large-capacity harddrive will likely still be prohibitively expensive in the near future. But even then, your library of games and movies would be limited. Second, not every one has high speed internet and thus would not be able to get games very easily (if at all). No, the next generation of systems will still be using disk based media formats, that is my prediction.

To those that say that multi-platform games always run better on the 360, well thats not really true–it was only mostly true when the PS3 first came out.
Already there are games that look or run better on the PS3, even though since the XBOX 360 released a year earlier developers are more familiar with its archetecture and tend to use it as their base platform. That is starting to change. For example, Call of Duty 4 was widely reported to run smoother and have better lighting than the 360 version. Other games that looked better/ran better on the PS3 are ES4 Oblivion, Burnout: Paradise, and Devil May Cry 4 (among others).

Finally, to all those who say that its all about the games and that only the XBOX 360 has the games, well I just don’t know what the hell you are talking about. XBOX 360 was out for a full year before the PS3 came on the scene so it naturally had a head start in the games department. Nevertheless, in its first year of life the PS3 had just as many great titles (if not more) that the XBOX 360 had in its first year. I would put Resistance, Motor Storm, Heavenly Sword, Uncharted, Ratchet & Clank Future, Folklore, Virtua Fighter 5, Warhawk, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, ES4 Oblivion, Half Life 2: Orange Box, The Darkness, Splinter Cell: Double Agent, Call of Duty 4, Assassin’s Creed and Unreal Tournament 3 up against Kameo, Perfect Dark Zero, Project Gotham Racing 3, Call of Duty 2, ES4 Oblivion, Gears of War (and the other 1st year 360 titles) any day. So what is this lack of games that the xbots are always yapping about? And 2008 looks even better, with games like:
Devil May Cry 4, Grand Theft Auto 4, Fallout 3, Dead Space, Dark Sector, Battlefield: Bad Company, Far Cry 2, Resident Evil 5 (hopefully), Soul Calibur 4, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, Borderlands, Fracture, Bionic Commando, Army of Two, Guitar Hero 4, Prototype, Wet, Brutal Legend, and Mercenaries 2. As well as an awesome exclusive lineup, including:
    Infamous
    Metal Gear Solid 4
    Grand Turismo 5 Prologue
    Resistance 2
    Killzone 2
    Socom Confrontation
    Haze
    Final Fantasy XIII (maybe)
    LittleBigPlanet
    The Agency
    Motorstorm 2
    Tekken 6
    White Knight Story
    Home (online community service)

Xbox 360 will of course get the same multi-platform games and also has its own lineup of exclusives, which include:
    Too Human
    Fable 2
    Ninja Gaiden 2
    Alan Wake
    Halo Wars
    BanjoThreeie
    Splinter Cell 5
(and I can’t really think of anything else)

I really can’t see where the Playstation 3 is so deficient. Both platforms have an awesome lineup of exclusive titles as well as multi-platform titles. To be honest though, I am a little more excited for the PS3’s lineup because it is a little more diverse and has some super exciting titles like Resistance 2, MGS4, and Killzone 2. If I had to pick one system or the other for 2008 I would have to pick the PS3 (XBOX 360 had a great 2007). Luckily I don’t have to choose between the two because I have both systems and can enjoy whichever games I want from either system.

I am just sick of morons bashing the PS3 using completely illogical and untruthful arguments. If most of the games on the PS3 don’t appeal to you, well no one is forcing you to buy the system. But please be aware that some people don’t find a lot of the games release for Xbox 360 to be appealing either. If you worship Halo as your god, or if you just generally like FPShooters then you will probably really dig the 360. But some people don’t really like those kinds of games, and some people don’t give a shit about online gaming. I mean if you take away Halo 3, Gears of War, Bioshock, GRAW, Rainbow Six, etc. you have just taken away a good number of the 360’s highest rated titles. That isn’t to say that the 360 doesn’t have other good titles, it does. But maybe not enough to make it the most attractive option for some people who don’t really get into FPShooters. Other people like myself feel we have to get both consoles in order to get all the games we really want to play.
The point is different strokes for different folks.
The Xbox 360 has an extensive and quality game lineup and an excellent online service. The PS3 is demonstrably more reliable in terms of hardware, has great multi-media features (including exceptional Blu-ray movie playback), and is also steadily building a strong and diverse catalog of titles. It is easy to see (if we are being objective) why either system might appeal to someone. So unrestrained bashing of either system is really nothing more than the signs of rabid fanboyism.

  68. JO:

    HMMM….
It’s now September and Sony has barely a lead on MS for the year. I guess Clifs diatribe was all BS. When will the Sony fanboys figure out that people will not by it for the blue ray.
Price is everything and now that MS has dropped theres, it is all over. Christmas 2008 is going to be MS’s.
