The end of year data is in, and it shows that overall the game industry had a phenomenal year in the US, with hardware, software and accessory sales reaching record levels. But the biggest winner by far was Nintendo with both the DS and Wii doing phenomenally well.

The gaming industry has come a long way from the days of inexpensive Nintendo consoles and cheap Sega titles; consoles are an expensive purchase, and games are no drop in the bucket. In an era where consoles are an investment, not just a whim purchase, consumers want consoles that justify the price; PS3 wins that category hands-down.

Business Week has recently come to the conclusion that regardless of the progress made in gaming, both technically and artistically, video games are still for kids. I’m here to tell them that they are dead wrong.

The console battle is still ongoing, but is it time to admit the Wii has won already, and the only thing worth fighting for now is the runners up position. If so, which competitor out of the PS3 and Xbox 360 is more likely to finish second?

Nintendo is under fire for patent infringement once again as a former employee of Midway Games seemingly came up with the idea of the Wii-mote and Ninchuk in 2000.

Both Nintendo and Sony are being sued by Copper Innovations Group, claiming that both companies current controllers are infringing on a patent filed by the company in 1996.

Taking a break from the news for a hot minute, I found myself staring at my Xbox 360, and its blinking ring of death. It’s been nearly two weeks and I still haven’t gotten my coffin, which will indeed be my fourth coffin. Either way, I started weighing the pros and cons of owning each console, and you know what? To hell with the 360. I’m buying a PlayStation 3.

It’s almost a forgone conclusion that if you don’t have one of the new Xbox 360s chances are good that, at some point, you will get a “red ring of death” and have to send it in for repair. If you do, chances are also good, all your downloaded content will no longer work thanks to Microsoft’s DRM.

If you think that Blu-Ray’s whomping victory over HD-DVD doesn’t have dire implications for the battle between the PS3 and the 360, you’d better think again. Though the PS3 has been behind the 360 in the U.S. for quite some time, that is all about to change drastically in Sony’s favor.

I recently visited my local GameStop retailer, and spoke briefly with a sales manager there (who very closely resembles the guitarist for Dragonforce, for those Guitar Hero III fans out there) who responded to my comment about taking a break from Halo 3 by saying, “Yeah, it seems that more and more Halo 3 die-hards are taking permanent breaks in favor of Call of Duty.” Why could one of the most popular first person shooter series in history be losing its strongest fans to a game of a completely different vein?
