Does Sony have a Slimline PS3 in the works?

February 1, 2008

slimps3 Sony seems to have a habit of re-releasing systems with basically the same innards but with a new design.  Remember the original Playstation?  It wound up as the PSOne, the PS2 is now the Slimline PS2 or PSTwo as some like to call it and now it seems a Slimline PS3 may be in the works.

We originally reported that Sony was preparing to release new PS3s with at least one model featuring a larger hard drive.  That PS3 may be the same ones destined to be the new Slimline PS3 model.  The Slimline model will probably have the same features as the current PS3.  It should have WiFi, HDMI output, Blu-Ray support and an upgraded 120GB to 160GB hard drive.

Sony has said that it will still take the two SKU approach when/if it releases the new models.  It could be that one of them is just the standard 40GB PS3 in its current incarnation and the other one with the larger hard drive would be the Slimline model.  Knowing Sony and how it likes to have its model line-up, it would make sense.

According to T3 News, the company did not wish to comment on the situation.  That’s typical, most companies don’t like to comment on something that is “in progress,” just like Apple on the MacBook Air.  Could the proof be in the denial?  Only time will tell.
