Xbox 360 finally beats PS3 and Wii… with controller battery life

The Xbox 360 hasn’t been having a good time of it lately, with poor sales, and even more dire predictions for the future of the Microsoft console. But at least Xbox owners can console themselves with the fact that their controller lasts the longest!
Okay, it might not be too much to write home about, but a small, insignificant and inconsequential victory is a victory none the less. In this age of wireless controllers, and people who play for far too long on their console of choice, it’s at least worth looking at how each compares.
Gamepro decided to put the three main home consoles controllers up against each other in a test to the death, and logged when each died from having their batteries run out.
In last place came the Sony PS3, with its Sixaxis controller. Although it is the only one of the three which can be recharged, giving it a healthy advantage over the lifespan of the console, and saving the gamer a packet of money, it died after just 18 hours and 41 minutes.
In second was the Nintendo Wii’s combination of Nunchuck and Remote. As Gamepro rightly points out, they are the most technologically advanced controllers on the market, and the sole reason for buying a Wii over a PS3 or Xbox 360. However, this didn’t help them last longer than the Xbox 360 controller, clocking in at 36 hours and 43 minutes. This was conducted using Duracell batteries, and default controller settings.
Which just leaves the Xbox 360 controllers, which despite having no fancy name, and not being anything very special, won the test by a country mile. One Xbox 360 controller lasted an incredible 56 hours and 56 minutes, again using Duracell batteries.
This proves absolutely nothing, except that Xbox 360 owners aren’t going to have to change the batteries in their controllers very often, but it was worth posting just to give them a much needed excuse to have a go at their PS3 and Wii owning friends.

A few other points, from someone who owns a PS3 and 360.
1) The 360’s charger can be adapted to be rechargeable.
2) The 360’s play-and-charge cable is really long. The absurd USB charging cable that came with my SixAxis is only 3 feet long!
3) When my SixAxis’s battery stops holding a charge from age, I’ll have to send it back to Sony to have it repaired, since it’s not a removable battery. (Or buy a new rumble-controller.)

Why wasn’t this tested with the Xbox 360 lithium rechargeable battery and the Wii lithium batteries? Single Use Batteries vs. Rechargeable is a terrible comparison. Also, a comparison of the power in the lithium batteries is needed. This test only really shows that batteries in the Xbox 360 controllers will last long than in the Wii Remotes.

Are you kidding me? I would have assumed that ALL controllers are rechargeable. I guess you could use rechargeable batteries but I haven’t even thought about it since I own a PS3 and it comes fully featured. Sure, it wasn’t as cheap but it comes with everything you need in one box.

Actually contrary to many ignorant and plain stupid Xbots beliefs there are plenty of good games available on the PS3. At least we don’t have to worry about very high failure rates or costly add ons to upgrade our machines. Nor do we no longer worry about dwindling sales.

Another fanboy rant…. Poor sales? Dire predictions? Last I checked, the 360 was still outselling the PS3 monthly, oh except for a few pissy European countries. And where did these dire predictions come from? There is a huge lineup of exclusives coming out this year, including Xbox360 exclusive content for GTAIV. I am not doubting that the PS3 is a good machine, but please get your facts straight before posting garbage like this.
This place is getting worse with it’s inaccurate reporting. It’s like they are trying to make uninformed, controversial statements to get more hits… I guess it’s working.

And what’s all this talk about buying batteries? Just get yourself a play and charge kit so you don’t need to worry about batteries.
So the PS3 controller is the worst performing, charge wise? So what’s going to happen when the Dual Shock controller appears? That will reduce the controller’s life even more, I would assume.

Idiot, you can’t compare rechargeble battaries that have been used for 1 year with shortened lifespan to test against brand new Duracell disposable batteries. A fair test would be to buy new rechargable batteries for all controllers and test how long the charge will hold for all three controller. I have a feeling PS3 will out last all three.

Screw You. If your going to make up lies at least make up convicing ones. Xbox 360 game sales are through the roof. 360 for the first time made a profit. They also just got a 7 games per console ratio. I think the PS3 and Wii were closer to 4. Games are the only thing any game console company makes profit off of. Biased piece of &#!+.

Uhm, no… USA is not the only country in the world. In fact the USA is the only country where they outsell PS3 probably due to Country loyalty or your gluttons for punishment take your pick.
PS34 is outselling the 360 worldwide now, get that? GLOBAL Sales not just the USA. As for the Dual Shock 3, works perfectly fine, charged it last week when I had it and havent charged since even though I play every night.

Actually the 360 is not outselling the ps3 in Europe. and The reason the article says that the 360 has dire predictions for the future is because look at this year.
EA has sent out predictions as far as sales go and the 360 is last. EA said this, i think it would be safe to say EA has an impact on the industry.
As Imabella said, the ps3 has games coming the 360 doesnt. And i will give you one name that makes the ps3 worth more than the 360, INSOMNIAC. For those of you m$ fanboys that dont know anything about things outside your m$ defected equipment, Insomniac makes Ratchet and Clank and they make Resistance. Resistance 2 is going to be one of the biggest games ever, i would not be suprised in the least if it wins game of the year for 2008.
The reason the 360 does better in the U.S. is because country loyalties and if you go into any gamestop or EB games you hear that the fuckin doosh bags push the 360 into unknowing parents. I have heard it several several times.
ALL microsoft products are defected from the start, maybe you m$ fanboys should explore the realm of technology a little more and learn that you do not have to put up with poor quality products. Honestly!

wow, January sales data from VGCharts equals “poor sales and dire predictions” for the XBOX 360? First of all NPD sales is the norm for the Industry. Those are the numbers that all major publishers subscribe to. Secondly, I was referring to MSFT’s quarterly results and how they were boosted by the XBOX division. And I’ll be the first to admit they bled money to death for a long time.
It’s not about the XBOX or PS3 or about being a fan boy. It’s just about the poor quality of this garbage article with generic statements and little journalism. The fact that a silly article about batteries can be sensationalized this way it’s just weak. I guess we’re the chumps for going to the boards…

The test is kinda flawed in the sense that the ps3 sixaxis uses rechargeable while the wiimote and xbox 360 controller uses disposable that in return, over the long haul, ps3 will turn out cheaper.

Besides lets check, um how many big games on xbox 360 that people would especially buy the console for??? Wasn’t it just halo and gears of war? I don’t really see another game I would just buy the 360 for. Halo 2 was for the original xbox while the major 360 exclusives came just before the ps3 release (GoW) or after (Halo 3). Even then the 360 was utilizing like 80% of its capabilities due to the simplicity of the architecture.
Now, looking at ps3’s camp, we have a huge fan-base on final fantasy, gran turismo, metal gear solid and killzone. Most of them going to be released this year. Also Home will be coming out and that will be a huge boost to the community.
Please, 360 fans, tell me a real-time rendering engine that can rival the graphics of final fantasy?? Anyone? Its simple, YOU CANT. Please keep in mind that Final Fantasy ditched the UT3 engine for the White engine.
The ps3’s cycle is exactly the same as the ps2. Emotion engine, no one knew 2 jack-sh*t about it. For a 333mhz CPU(ps2), jack-shit sure can pull out some kick ass graphics. But wait, the ps3s 3.2ghz. Instead of doing the 2 instructions/cycle that the ps2 did, the 360 can only do 3 and the ps3 can do 6! Meaning superior everything! Just thats there’s a little problem that there’s a step learning curve. But it’s not that bad, the FarCry 2 engine was ported quite well, even though it was built for PC.
Also the hard drive comes with every ps3, so the lack of RAM can be overcome. Unlike the 360 core package.
Also can I mention how much 360 died in the ass when it was released? What was that game, um Perfect Dark, um something(don’t remember crappy things). Now, compare that to Resistance. I think there’s a good difference in quality and yet had roughly the same time to work on it. The only thing that really saved 360 was Halo 2 while people waited for decent games to come out. But past is past. But lest we forget.
The build quality on the 360 is just like wtf. I’ve opened a 360 and kinda disappointed. It was a board, a DVD drive and a huge heatsink on the CPU and this was overheating?! I had enough space to put 3 classic game-boys in there comfortably. Its like I payed how much for something simple as that??? The 360 sounds like a jet plane compared to my ps3. So far my ps3 has been on consistently for months (folding, currently at 124 units) and I barely know its even on (and sometimes totally forget about). The ps3 is also packed with features that would cost extra if you bought a 360. Btw ps3 is LOSING money with every purchase. Gives you an idea how much is included in the ps3.
Which leads to the next point that the 360s have a 33% chance of RoD which means that you have the burden to make a trip to the store and get your 360 fixed. Wheres ps3s technical repair? Wait, service only in Japan? Probably cause they aren’t needed. Failure rate is 1%. Hear that 1%. You have more chance getting another electrical device to malfunction on you.
360 fans should just wrap themselves in a towel so they heat up to such a point that metal melts.
Also would you like to watch some of your obsolete HD-DVD’s? Over here there’s quite a selection of blu-ray movies brewing up. Enough to kill time till the exclusives are released. XD.
