EA claims PS3 harder to develop for than Xbox 360

EA claims PS3 harder to develop for than Xbox 360Electronic Arts is one of the leading developers for the next generation consoles. So CEO John Riccitiello talking about how much more difficult the PS3 is to develop for than the Xbox 360, isn’t good news for those loyal Playstation 3 owners.

Last year we heard from Ubisoft about how Assassins Creed was being held up by the difficulties the company were having trying to develop the game for both the PS3 and Xbox 360. While it seems that was a memory and disc space issue, companies are still seeming to have problems getting to grasp with developing on the PS3.

The admittance from EA CEO John Riccitiello came during an investors conference call and was in response to a question posed by an unnamed industry analyst. He asked “Has the PS3 development process managed to catch up to the 360?”

According to PSX Extreme, Riccitiello replied:

“Not quite. There’s no doubt that Electronic Arts, along with many other publishers, had some challenges essentially meeting the technical specifications effectively on the PlayStation 3,”

“Games where we led development on the PS3 platform, like Burnout, which is doing very well on the market today, we had no issue at all.”

“But in circumstances where we either led with the Xbox 360 or ran parallel production, for the most part, we’re still experiencing some delay on the PS3. It’s a little bit more of a challenging development environment for us. It’s probably only a third of a problem for us as it was [nine months ago]. But there still remains some catching up to do on the engineering side for the PS3.”

This could just be EA having these kinds of problems, but it is one of the most experienced game developers in the industry, so I wouldn’t mind betting that the difficulty they are having developing for the Sony console, is more widespread than just EA.

Back in December, Jack Tretton, CEO of Sony, claimed that the PS3 was now the leading development platform for games. While that may be true in terms of the number of games currently in production for the system, if other developers are also having trouble with the technology, and clunkiness of the PS3 dev kits, then we can expect delays galore to keep occurring.

So if its the lead platform, does this mean we have to suffer delays as 360 owners to?

IF this information is correct–you can never tell with this site–than Sony lost it’s goal of easy development, which is exactly one of the things that made the PS1 so popular.

If Sony helped developers understand their system and thus make it easier to develop for, there would be some incredible games for it. However I fear that we’re going to end up with some great first party games, but run of the mill multi platform games, games which were easier to program, and in most cases better, on the 360.

If Sony want to win this war, they had better hope that their exclusives are must buys this year, as I’ve got to say, so far the 360 exclusives have been a world apart from the PS3 exclusives. 2008 is the ‘do or die’ year for Sony, they have lost a lot of ground, and have a lot of work to do to catch up.

Article published just at wrong time, EA has just come out saying that they believe the ps3 will easily outsell the 360 over the year and beyond, and if ps3 led development games are as good and sold as well as Burnout Paradise then it looks like ps3 is about to get large support from EA, good after the amount of 360 led rubbish that EA has been releasing for a while now

It’s old news. EA needs to stop making excuses, and focus and making a great product for both the 360 & PS3.

If the lead for Burnout out was the PS3, then EA might want to split titles (in terms of who’s the lead).

It’s no mystery EA’s lazy. I just hope other devs come around with some great titles, and 360 & PS3 owners can get a better football game once the NFL license expires.
