PSP inches closer to DS; Xbox 360 still Wii, PS3 and PS2 whipping boy

By James Walker

It appears that Sony’s PSP may be slowly gaining ground on Nintendo’s DS handheld, which has had the Japanese handheld market in a firm stranglehold since it’s initial release oh, so many moons ago.

Media Create, the statistics firm that often borders on obsessive-compulsive with just how many statistics they do keep (I’m willing to bet they have a percentage figure for the number of Nintendo Wii’s sold on rainy days in Nebraska) has released new figures showing that the Sony’s PSP, the all-in-one multimedia superdevice that just happens to play video games from time to time, is inching closer to the top spot on the Japanese Handheld Hardware sales, and has once again outsold the Nintendo DS’s bigger brother, the Wii.

Last week the Nintendo DS was able to keep the top spot by selling an impressive 79,370 units last week, while the PSP was close behind with 77,933 units sold in the same time frame.

On the console front, the Wii still reigns supreme, smacking down both the PS3 and Xbox 360 yet again, this time by some 30,000+ units. The Wii sold 74,500 units, while the PlayStation 3 sold 34,363. The Xbox 360 rounded out the consoles by selling a depressing 4,296 units. To put that in perspective, the seven year-old PlayStation 2 outsold the Xbox 360 in Japan by a margin of nearly 6-to-1.

This continues the long-standing trend of Microsoft being beaten like a Government Mule in the land of the rising sun. You would think that eventually Microsoft would catch on and give up, but alas they stick it out. In a way, it’s admirable.

Sad, but admirable.

The numbers given in the article for the JAPAN market seems to jive with other news articles. I really don’t understand the criticisms levelled by the other posters here.

Listen, if the DS has been selling more than the PSP since said handheld launched and without losing much ground for YEARS, it’s silly to consider like a big deal that the PSP is catching up to the DS particular sales from a week or two. To really catch up to the DS, said handheld needs to STOP selling. Only then could the PSP catch up. But since the DS continues to sell (sold 2 million units last december), the PSP will never catch up.

As it is, the PSP has a better future being considered as competition for the Zune.

A Japanese business man already said what’s the prob with the 360. MS needs to cater to the japanese consumer. Making the 360 less bulky (Japanese consumers live in small houses and like buying small gadgets like the Wii or ipod) and they need to buy Square from under Sony’s nose.

      Playstation 2.

Just like the typical fanboys, I see. See some news they don’t like, and they just stick their fingers in their ears and scream until the bad news goes away.

    9. Ivan_PSP:

PSP will be back to #1 soon, DS is just a gimmick waiting to fade away. The PSP has Music Video Photo Internet and TV free and perfect graphic better than Wii.

You rock James, so true about fanboys, just look at these comments, lol, most didn’t read the article

Mmmmm. TechBleearch! Day after day they totally bagged the PS3, so often for the wrong reasons too. Yes, SONY got arrogant and screwed up again and again. They had a great product, but made so many mistakes over the past couple of years….
However, TechBludge bagged SONY for the machine, again and again, and that, as we are now seeing, was a MISTAKE.
A mistake, as you must now eat your words and take the bitter pill, of people like me laughing at how your language is now changing, back-tracking. I’ll check back in another year so I may laugh again at your side switching, and check against all the articles you wrote with your scathing attacks against the PS3 that will forever come back to chew off another piece of your left buttocks.

“…DS is just a gimmick waiting to fade away.”

Yeah the DS has been a “gimmick” for about 4 years now. And every single one of those 4 years, the “gimmick” has beaten the crap out of the PSP.

For shame. The PSP beaten by a gimmick… good thing it has company at the bottom of the barrel… since the PS3 has also been beaten by a “gimmick”: the Wii.

      LOL
