Will Grand Theft Auto IV help Xbox 360 beat PS3 in 2008?

There’s no doubt that one of the biggest games releases due this year is that of Grand Theft Auto IV, the latest in the best selling Rockstar franchise. The question is, will the game make any difference to the console sales war currently being waged by Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo?
GTA IV has been the most talked about future release on the next generation consoles almost since the day it was announced. The game will be coming out on both the Xbox 360, and PS3 in a simultaneous release in April. Although the Wii will be missing out, that doesn’t mean it’s immune from the effect the game could have on hardware sales.
The first thing to note is that the Xbox 360 will have extra content available to download after the initial game is released, thanks to a deal between Microsoft and Rockstar. These will be available via Xbox Live, and will be exclusive to the Xbox, with PS3 owners missing out.
In a recent interview with Wired magazine at the DICE summit, Shane Kim, corporate vice president of Microsoft Game Studios put forward the notion that this means the Xbox 360 already effectively owns the GTA IV launch, telling them:
“We already own it, I believe, from a content standpoint, because we have the exclusive episodes. And so Xbox 360 is still going to have the ultimate experience for GTAIV. But we have to make sure the customers know that.”
“Because if you look back, again, to the role of GTAIII and what that played in terms of PS2’s development — in Europe as well, because it was huge in Europe — GTAIV, first time on our platforms, so that’s a great opportunity for us. We need to take advantage of it.”
Clearly Microsoft have put the utmost importance in the release of GTA IV, and getting the message across to consumers that to get the full experience, they will need to own an Xbox 360.
But gamers are a savvy bunch, so will buy a console based on more than just some exclusive content being available (at a price) for one game. A game which is also available on a rival console, and so not an exclusive in the same way that Halo is.
The PS3 actually has a few advantages over the Xbox 360 at the time of writing, with the Blu-ray player included from the off, and a whole host of 100% exclusive games on the way, including Final Fantasy XIII, Gran Turismo 5 and Metal Gear Solid IV.
So personally, I don’t think the release of Grand Theft Auto IV will actually favour the Xbox 360 much at all. However, the Wii on the other hand, is another proposition, being the console which will be left out of the hype surrounding the game entirely.
I can definitely see sales of the Wii dropping off a little come April, while sales of both the PS3 and Xbox 360 surge on the strength of GTA IV, as well as the other goodies on their way during 2008.

while i mostly agree about the ps3 not being hurt since it is still getting the gta4, and other exclusives as well, i wouldnt count out the wii
were there is gta4 exclusive on 360 or ps3, you have ssbb on the wii, where there is mgs4, you have mario kart
sure there not targeted at the same audience, but i think that further helps out nintendo, nintendo has their own exclusives games that people have just gotta have, and there are still people looking for a wii everyday, alot of which are hardcore gamers who want a wii before brawl comes out, so i sorta count nintendo out of the 360 and ps3 race, i think the competition is between sony and microsoft, and i personaly believe sony will take the win, but not as early as people are predicting, i dont think itle be this year, but by next year sony should start to show up on top more often, and the next xbox will probably come out 4 and a half years after the 360……

I agree this blog is ridiculous, I followed a link from Google’s News section. Deranged ramblings.
Two “stories” of DLC content wont make any difference. People still associate the GTA brand with the PlayStation if they have yet to purchase either console.
Rockstar have three PS3 exclusives games after GTA has been and gone. LA. Noire, Red Dead Revolver 2 and a yet to be announced title that will be a new franchise. All said to be only achievable on PS3 hardware according to them.
I think they’re still pissed at Microsoft for shipping one console without any hard drive and using DVD9, the 360 problems have caused limitations.

The Grand Theft Auto series was born on PlayStation like every other game that’s a hit. So no i know the PLAYSTATION 3version will sell more is just shitty downloadble content for a limited time… Xbox 360 is dying HD DVD fail to Blu-ray Disc and most Xbox 360 are dying also over heating or ren light of death. Downloadable content for ps3 was also recently confirmed by rockstar just not directly at launch. So play the game and by the time you get near to finishing this massive game the content should be there for you to download. Rockstar played this one pretty clever, get microsoft to shell out millions for exclusive content then keep sony sweet by giving them their own.

Dave Parrack has no idea what he is on about, neither do microsoft. microsoft came out and said that because they are starting to fear the ps3, the first of these episodes will arrive at theend of this year and the next one 10 months from then so its a long wait, and R* made a mistake accepting microsofts offer because not all xbox’s have a hard drive so god only knows how they are going to store ths content and the episodes will not be free, and the money that microsoft payed R* to have the episodes is going back to micrsoft because it costs money to put the episodes on XBL, also GTA4 will have the same impact as DMC4 had, DMC4 was originally a PS2 exclsive, now it is more popular on the PS3 and as a result it is selling systems, it will be the same on the PS3, it will sell a huge amount of systems for the PS3. microsft is using words to twist the minds of others, never trust microsoft.

I have both console so i really dont care. Here is my opinion. Maybe the PS3 doesn’t need the downloadable content. Maybe “the full experience” is already included on the blu-ray disc, since it holds 5 times as much or something. I think the xbox live DLC is M$ excuse for not being able to hold 50 gigs. “Buy the game, then download the rest of it”.

I don’t think the DLC will be a system seller. People with both systems who have to make a choice between getting it on the ps3 or the 360, for them DLC may be a swaying factor.

Xbox 360 will die this year Sony’s has a massive exclusive catalog which expands from PLATFORM games to FPS (The only genre Xbox 360 has) GTA will never make Xbox move console that’s for sure. GTAIV Might be realeasing too close to Metal Gear Solid 5: Guns of the Patriots.

I own a PS3 and an Xbox 360 and guess what… I’ll be buying the PS3 version of GTA4… I just don’t care much about some DL content that wont contribute much to the overall game. R* may make exclusive DL content for the PS store anyway. This is not a big deal and it wont hurt Sony much at all especially considering that there are other huge games coming out for the PS3 that are exclusive such as MGS4, GT5, FFXIII, FFXIII Versus, KZ2, Resistance 2, Uncharted DF 2 and Rockstar will be mostly PS3 exclusive after GTA4 cause L.A. Noir and Rockstar’s next game franchise is PS3 exclusive. So I hope xbots enjoy their DL content cause I’ll be enjoying all these PS3 exclusive games….

When Assasin’s creed was released sony made a good job of advertising it as it’s own even though it was on xbox so i’d like to see how microsoft advertise this because if they make out to your average joe that the xbox is the proper full game it is bound to effect peoples decisions. The download content is only free if you pre-order the game apparently, sorry to those people who think so.
And to those who think the Xbox 360 is cheaper than the PS3 think again. Well unless you don’t want a gold membership to live than it is true, but apparently everybody has one since the 360 will be about useless without it:
PS3 40 GB = 399$
Xbox 360 Premium = 350$ + Live 50$ yearly = 400 $ minimum

This stupid fighting is pointless. They’re both good machines. 360 has some great exclusives currently out, and PS3 has some potentially great exclusives coming out this year (as does the 360). If you guys spent more time actually playing your machines rather than trying to convince yourself and others that your system is better, perhaps this stupid fighting would stop.
I mean let’s be realistic. Both machines are very powerful. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. Both are going to be successful. Who cares which one sells more? As long as people are enjoying their games, and developers are making money (thus keeping the industry healthy), then honestly, who cares?

I think if I didnt already have an Xbox and I wanted GTA IV, I’d be inclined to go for the PS3 since you can get the 40Gb for the same price as an Elite these days.The Xbox has had a lot of bad publicity with machines breaking down. How many ads do you see these days for ‘Xbox 360 repair’ or ‘Xbox 360 ring of death’? If gamers are such a savvy bunch how is it they are still selling so many!??

I was one of the most anti xbox people you could meet until I actually played on LIVE. It’s just one of those things you will love to hate until you actually experience it. GTA4 has got a massive multiplayer side to it which should also favour the use of headsets which all 360 owners get for free.

i own both consoles so im definately not biased to either, but the way i see it, if you really are a true GTA fan you would want to get the most content you could…. it makes sense. it is the EXACT same game on both consoles, none will be better than the other they will be the same… except the 360 one has more content than the ps3…. it might not be a lot of content, but on the other hand it might be, who knows until it is out.
therefore if you weigh it all up, it is the exact same game but one has a little more than the other… you are telling me you would rather get the one without? anyone who has both consoles and gets the ps3 version must be mad!

Xbox 360 totally owns the ps3.. worldwide ps3 owners cant even play ps2 games on their 40gb model (which most of all got, since the other models are not selling anymore in europe etc) so all you people saying we got ps2 games blalb.. wow.. cool.really? no.. we got over 400 xbox originals games in which many are due to be able to be downloadable from xbox live.. i already downloaded 3 games from live this week:D we can play all the good old fashion cult games why you guys talk about them,, but cant play them:P haha.. and we got over 300 movies, tv shows etc to download and rent.. you got..hm.. 0? haha! Since GTA4 will be multiplayer, the draw for me would be to buy it for 360, as xboxlive is far superior to the sony network facility and this will provide a stable platform from which I will play.

the game was supposed to have more missions gun and a bigger map but the xbox 360 dvd discs can only have 15 gb’s and the ps3 blu-ray discs can carry up to 50 gbs, i think they should have made a seperate version for each console

Xbox 360 is much better, i have both consols and always rent before i buy games. All of the sports games suck on the ps3 and take way too long to load. The PS3 online is retarded, Xbox live is much better which is why i am definately buying GTAIV on the xbox 360 the experience will be much better.
As for the comment earlier listening to music while playing a game is a good thing with certain games, u wouldnt do it with gtaIV no, but you would with sports games etc. At the end of the day the PS3 hasnt showed me anything the Xbox hasn’t already, and most of its exclusives look rubbish.

Wow seriously you people can’t spell for shit. You would have to be effing blind to not see that the graphics of ANY game released in the last year are BETTER on the 360 than the PS3. I have both systems and have rented numerous recent titles for both and the 360 without a doubt looks better. Maybe if you have a shitty tv it’s different but with a 1080p TV xbox wins. I was a PS fan but shit Sony needs to figure this damn box out so that it can surpass the xbox as everyone claims it can. And for you IDIOTS who think there are better games on the PS3, what wtf are you smoking. Sure in the next year there will be a few good titles, but how many will they be behind? You know the games, you can add, you figure it out. BR is far from being the standard and probably never will because someone will come out with something better. LOL A dumbass would think that what I said about the graphics was wrong. It was only VERY recent that Sony finally has some games that are close to the graphics of the xbox. I have no doubt sony will surpass the xbox this year, however at the moment it’s all future tense. If you want to play games NOW and not in a year, get an xbox. If you can wait, PS is the better choice. I never mentioned the chips and BTW RSX is NOT faster. Maybe you you should do some technically research or talk to a programmer who has programmed for BOTH systems. And you’re right about the reliability of the xbox although they have gotten better. I got a warranty and if it breaks then I get a new one which is fine by me. Maybe I’ll break it towards the end of my warranty and get a new one lol. But I do love the PS for what it is. Both systems are great, neither is perfect yet. So keep your cool and be satisfied that we agree on how awesome the PS will be this year.

Thank you daz. I’m glad I’m not the only one who sees it. Again I have both systems and I like both equally but for different reasons. Basically my PS is a blu ray player, although I will be getting GT5 on it and probably a few others. I love racing games and let’s face it there are many more out for the xbox and they look way better. I don’t like the fact that the xbox is noisy. It bugged me at first but I rarely notice it unless I try and watch a movie on it. Thankfully I have my whisper quiet playstation which plays 1080p movies so it’s no biggie. As for the unreliability that Sony fans always throw out, I have a warranty from Best Buy which will cover it. If it lasts 3 years i’ll be happy. The next xbox will probably come out in 3-5 years anyway. And the game has nothing to do with frying the xbox, it’s when people who have the OLD 360 and NO life will play for 12 hours straight and end up effed. I’ve left mine on for days at a time to test it and it’s barely warm. In fact it’s cooler than the PS. In FACT, the sides and top felt COLD, and it was running a game 3 days straight (no I wasn’t playing it for 3 days straight). My roommate has done the same and has had no problems with his. How many bought a PS3 without a warranty? So paying for it wasn’t a deal breaker in my book. I am curious how many people who have BOTH systems like the PS3 controller over the Xbox. My hands tend to get more tired with the xbox controller. BTW IVAN_PSP, there are NOT 100+ exclusive games. Seriously people if you want to talk trash about the PS, at least get your facts straight. Yes there are a few coming out this year but there are not even 100 games out for the PS.

ok david think……there are so many games coming out for ps3 that no one knows about…..sony has 300+ games stored up….xbox has like a couple exclusives….300!!..wow…..and also it is taking long for the game makers to get a grip on such advanced technology….they have to make the games differently know because the technology is better….just wait until they figure out how to make the games better…360 will be so far behind…and the 360 is sooo noisy….it vibrates my whole room….jesus christ….instead of buying 1000 dollar heat, vibrating, massaging chairs, buy a 360…..if i was a little kid and my parents wouldnt let me play xbox 360 in the middle of the night, and i turned it on while my parents are sleep…..the 360 would wake them up…..and why buy a warrenty for the ps3…..only 0.2% problems issued….and xbox 360 has a 33.3% failure rate…wow..thats sad for a next gen system….there are still problems with the so called “new” 360……and why bother making a new xbox when the 360 is a complete failure……if a new xbox is made,… the sales arent going to be high…trust me….ps3 is supposed to last up to 7-10 years….because it has so advanced tech in it….and by the time 10 years is over….new tech will be made….and if a new xbox is made, it still will have worse tech in it than sony…bc ps4 will be newer…..and it might sound boring to have the ps3 for 10 years….but with new updates every month, it wont be boring…bc sony adds on new features like “Home”…..that feature will destroy xbox live……and guess what, home will be free…..and sony will make there money off of advertisements in there…but the advertisements will be shown casually…unlike xbox live….so sony will make alot of money from that….and then theres a possibility that sony will make xbox live free….and once its free all those 360 fans have to take back everything they said about “free” online….yeah, the 360 actually does over heat……if the 360 is left on too long, some parts inside could melt and drip on the mother board…then it successfully short circuits itself and breaks down……also the ps3 can get warm..but its not overheating…..the ps3 can actually be left on for 3 days straight….and not overheat…..the external coolers in the stores for the ps3 make everthing worse..so dont buy those…and yes the 360 controllers suck ass….even if they copied off sony and nintendo…and david, is it ok if i can have your PSN Name?…….and i have done my research….here are 1/23 of the research ive found::

Matt it’s obvious you’re mind is made up and even if you are wrong you don’t care. I NEVER said xbox is better than PS. I said they are both good for their own reasons and neither is perfect. If you think you can honestly say that right now the games on the shelf for playstation haver better graphics than xbox you’re lying to yourself. Have you rented the same games for both systems to compare? Have you read the reviews on official sites with pictures? and videos? They all say the same thing. The graphics are better on xbox. Now of course it comes at a price because maybe your xbox will freeze up or die. However, I’d rather have the games and graphics and buy a $40 warranty than have a game system with crappy games. You’re right. There are many games that will come out, but don’t say there will be 300+ as if you’re a programmer for sony and have the inside scoop. Why are you so confidant that MS won’t also put out 300+ games with equal graphics? It has been said that Sony is more powerful, but show me the money! BTW if Sony hasn’t put out another game system in less than 10 years they are retarded. Technology changes faster than you can bat an eye and in five years 1080p will probably be old like DVD is quickly becoming. I love my PS3. I love my xbox 360. Together they keep me entertained. Sony doesn’t have the games, MS doesn’t have the BD. I admit that Microsoft is pretty effing stupid for not making a gaming system that is reliable, and choking Bill would seem logical. But Sony is stupid for putting out games with sucky graphics. They should have put a chip in the system that would be easier to program games for so that the programmers wouldn’t have to cut corners. If I were to have to decide between the two systems I wouldn’t be able to because they are equal in my mind for different reasons. Neither is superior 100%. I’m being unbiased about it which many people who discuss this sony vs. ms issue are NOT. They are hell bent on their opinion and don’t give a shit about what other people say. I agree with most of what you said, but it’s like you’re ignoring the FACT that right NOW Sony’s games are sub-par graphic wise. Let’s leave it at that. I won’t respond to you any more. It’s a waste of time to keep arguing the same points because I know you’ll probably come back and make some argument about how Sony’s games are better when they’re not, or how there are 300+ games coming out over the next 50 years as if you can predict the future for gaming when you know damn well it can change overnight.

ok you know what………every one shut up…..the both consoles are almost the same…except 360 has alot of problems…360 has alot of games…but halo 3 wasnt all that great….i finished that in one day….and my friend was so excited in school that as soon he got home…halo 3 would be there and he could play it…and he was so excited he looked like he was shitting in his pants…..my friend is retarded and obsessed…anyway..360 has DVD 9 - 8.5 gb….thats why the games are so short and not worth the money…seriously id rather pay 60 dollars for a LOOONNG game that last weeks and are actually a challenge…like ps3…..Gears i beat in 1 day too….christ…there good but short….the graphics are basically even…so whatever..you can play music in the background….but im not paying 300 dollars+ for just that….besides when you play call of duty 4…you have to use like 3 of your senses to win….if theres music in the background, i cant here someone sneeking up on me and i get killed….its good for racing games though…and besides ps3 already has that ability…but has not been enabled…and ps3 version update 2.40 will have in-game messaging….and ps3 has like no problems at all…it might get warm, but it doenst break….and i dont have to have a FREE repair…not….takes me 100 dollars to ship the damn thing out to the company….ps3 has blu ray…the future dvds…holds around 54 gb…which means more long games that are worth paying for….also almost every company is switching to blu ray…Disney etc…..HD is soo outdated…ps3 has more abilities than 360 by a long shot….ps3 gets system updates every month….and sony just keeps on adding and giving….and the price is just stupid to fight over….360 is cheap because not every one comes with a hard drive….it doesnt come with high definition dvd player…thats and extra 100 dollars and it only has 30 gb discs……who cares about headsets…just buy one like a man like you pay for xbox live…ps3 supports like all bluetooth headsets…it also supports usb headsets….to tell you the truth..i got a ps3 headset for free…i bought one for my razr phone a long time ago…and realized i can use it for my ps3….ps3 supports keyboards…mouses…and printers too….ps3 has free internet….has a internet browser…ps3 already has a wireless thing in there….you dont have to pay an extra 100 dollars again just to have wireless…ps3 supports wired internet too….ps3 has remote play…did i mention that sony has a amazing handheld?…that is a million times better that ds and wii..and you can go to out of state and stream things of your ps3…also ps3 has folding home…..sony cares about people with diseases…….so help donate your computer power…so when doctors find a cure for a vital disease….sony was part of it…nintendo is stupid….they dont even focus on there own system….only on dumbass Mario…microgay is money driven and selfish…..ps3 had BD live…where you pop in a blu ray movie and the ps3 goes online and searches for extra downloadable content for that very disc…and possibly free……ps3 will have home….suck that 360…..ps3 has over 30 fucking thousand classic and greatest his games form ps2….and o my god…360 can play 400 classics…..i dont even remeber classics on the xbox……most of the games on there were form ps2…..sony also can play ps1 classics too…you can also download themes for your ps3….the ps3 has XMB will kills teh stupid ass dashboard on 360….you have to admit the XMB is better….say what you want…anyone in there right mind would think so…..on ps3, everything is organized well…and there is so much more……xbox 360 has cool things and so does sony….sony makes alot more things that nintendo and microsoft combined…..and every sony product is amazing….they know how to make products because they atleast double check what they make…i understand companies make betas of softwares and stuff….but buying a 360 for like 300-400 dollars and its all buggy…wow…if i was bill gates…i would hide under my bed…because of embarrasement……and in japan….the ps3 has more things in the US…so you dont know anything….and no..when im online on ps3…i havent heard one person speak japanese….you guys are all retards…..im listing everthing i know….and one of you…david the asshole…comes around and acts like a smart ass…and has to list everything professionally….you always ruin david….david, i sometimes exaggerate….like the 300+ games for ps3….but you take it so seriously like you are trying to act like a smart ass and trying to stand up for microgay…..and they are gay….every damn windows they make is soo damn shitty….mac is the way to go…everyone knows…if anyone says windows is better…you are like 2 year olds…..you might say that i am acting like a 2 year old…maybe i am acting like one, but atleast im telling facts and im not telling them like Axileas did…..there you go….360 and ps3 compared…both are not the same but there next gen…ps3 is more next gen..whatever…..all i can say is that ….360 cannot be better in any way….

I would hope Mac is better. They fucking charge enough! BTW the 360 isn’t cheap. It costs about the same as a PS3. Anyway if you don’t have either system, get the PS3 because of potential. If you have the 360, save your money because most games come out on both systems anyway. Matt name a game that is longer than 10 hours on the ps3 that isnt’ the same on the xbox.

ok….GTA IV…not an exclusive..but it doesnt have to be put on 2 discs…..but its because of small memory…..but still, its a long game……that probably wasnt a good example…..but im just spitballin here…i dont buy many games because i spent my money on other things…so dont really know….rfom was long to me…..so was genji….those probably arent long…..but i know that sony will make games that are long in the future……but it does suck that the 360 has less memory on the discs…..360 cant last with warhawk, just because of big maps……and also the bonus content for gta IV for 360 is a stupid idea….not everyone has a hard drive for their 360…….and also 360 fanboys are retarded…because if it was sony or the ps3 that got the bonus content, i wouldn’t care….or brag about it….i probably wouldn’t buy or download it…..sony doesnt need bonus content for games on their system and not on the 360 to feel good and better of themselves….sony already knows best on how fix the problem

well dave, about the graphics……the reason why the graphics on 360 for multiplatform games is because they were made on 360 first….and like i said its easier to develop on the 360…ps3 has better technology so its hard to get it right when game developers have been developing games a different way for like 8 years straight…..also right now Drakes Fortune has the best graphics on the market……the ps3 is doing 10 times better in Japan….(no der..lol)…also the ps3 out sold 360 in 2007…..and january 2008……..and i wouldn’t buy a 360 now….because ps3 will have more games ( 150 exclusives confirmed) and 360 is 1 year ahead…wow……sony is not playing around at all……once sony is totally stopped with ps2…..sony is gona take out the big guns…..M$ has big guns, but with no ammo

lol i have read these arguments and the xbox 360 is great for gta IV i also have a ps2 and it was easy to play gta games but you look at sony and microsoft and which is the bigger brand…microsoft so as they make more better computers there ideas on the xbox will expand and sony will have to consentrate on other gadgets like cameras,phones and the psp.lets bring that in this conversation coz they could make a new gta game on it…do you lot agree.
