PS3 breaks PS2 sales record, to overtake Xbox 360 by summer

February 13, 2008

slimps31 Sony has sold one million PS3s in the UK so far.  This means the PS3 has sold faster than the PS2 before it.  If sales stay at this level, the PS3 will be set to overtake the Xbox 360 by summer.

The PS3 has been available in the UK since March 23, 2007.  It took 60 weeks for the Xbox 360 to sell one million units and 50 weeks for the PS2.  However, none of them were able to touch Nintendo which sold one million Wiis in 38 weeks.

According to GamesIndustry, EA is expecting the PS3 to outsell the Xbox 360 this year which may sell up to 6 million units in Europe and an additional 5 million in North America.

MCV indicates that the PS3 has been outselling the Xbox 360 for the last month.

Things are looking good for Sony’s European market but things aren’t quite as good in the American market.  It’s still good but not as good as it could be.

The lack of games is still a problem.  Most of the good games on the PS3 have yet to be released, some of which are expected later this year.  Others may be as late as 2009.  The only real purpose of a PS3 right now is as a “cheap” Blu-Ray player that can play existing and future Blu-Ray discs.

It would also probably be wiser to wait until later this year to buy a PS3 because at least one revision of the console is due.  There will likely be a choice of the “classic” console (what it looks like now) and the new “slim” version with the larger hard drive.  Though it is likely that both will be powered by the new 45nm cell processor.

If they drop the price dramatically, and if the blockbuster games released this year live up to their hype, I would consider picking one up.

  2. The Professor:

bigfella, just stop commenting you have nothing positive to say…ever

  3. ore:

They need to drop the price or add the revised model in before GTA4 hits other wise alot of people may be swaded to buy a 360…..nahhh as if, when you buy a 360 you get a far better built machine that plays the same games with its own batch of exclusives! what non-fanboy, right minded consumer would buy a poorly built machine that may fail sooner than you think? none, well that’s not quite true, there are 17 million of you, same figure as the xbox 1, hmmm.

  4. ore:

    PS3? opps

  5. bigfella:

Professor, i said i was considering picking one up. How is that negative? What a stupid thing to say….

I thought professors were meant to be smart?

Another Sony diehard fanboy using a misleading headline to cause a stir. According to EA the PS3 is gonna outsell the 360 this year? Right. EA of all people should be the one to talk, after pretty much condemning the PS3. ThePS3 is nothing but a cheap blu ray player, and PS3 owners should be satisfied with that. As a gaming machine, the PS3 is a disaster.

  8. Legal:

    Disaster???????

    Dreamcast was a disaster!!!!

You could even say the original XBOX was a disaster or even the 360 a disaster from a faulty design point of view.

PS3 is not in the same category.

As for Jonathan Schlaffer who IMO is a complete idiot the statement regarding the PS3 being a cheap blu-ray player is just about him trying to upset people and start an on-line bashing.

    Cheap!!!!!

I speak as a minority here – a non-biased person, who will give his oppinion.
Part of me thinks that the Xbox 360 deserves to be the top selling console out of the two as it has more better games, better interface, and more functionality. The 360 also has the better of the two for multi-platform games, and has a wide array of exclusives this year, Too Human, Banjo and Kazooie, etc..
But, and a big but, the PS3 is reliable, has free online, looks better, has more physical functionality (ports and such). The PS3 has room to create bigger and better games, though this depends on the developer and how well they can use the hardware.
Me, i would chose the Wii, though this too has its own problems, which includes causing the possible end to hardcore gamers being the be all and end all of video games.
Casuals FTL, RROD FTL, few good games FTL.

@TheSaint, reading is your friend and so is knowledge, please leave until your brain grows larger than a pea and read the article before you post num nuts.

How is the headline misleading? It is 100 percent true, geez, you fanboys never learn do you?

  11. bigfella:

    Moustachio,

Are you really under the impression that PS3 sales are going to overtake the 360 in 6 months time? How is that possible when the 360 is still outselling the PS3 by a rather large margin in the US? Not only does PS3 have to outsell the 360 per month, but they are behind by quite a few million also. No way can they make up that type of ground in the next 6 months.

I am not saying that it will never happen, I’m no analyst, but I seriously doubt it will happen by summer.

  12. A gamer:

This article isn’t saying the ps3 will sell more than the 360 worldwide, not this year anyway. Its saying the PS3 will overtake the Xbox360 by summer in the UK.Which is not a bad judgement considering that the UK has mainly been a playstation market (same as the US market being mainly xbox prone).

  13. sam miles:

ps3 has now sold 10.5 million ps3 compared to 360’s 17.7 million. ps3 is catching up

  14. bunbury:

I’d buy a PS3 tomorrow if they brought back PS2 compatibility and included the larger hard disk that is being discussed. Now that HD-DVD format is being withdrawn this is bound to affect Xbox 360 sales.
