Sony’s PS3 to gain ground due to lack of Blu-Ray for Xbox 360

February 23, 2008

Sony's PS3 to gain ground due to lack of Blu-Ray for Xbox 360 Microsoft has said that there are no current plans to release a Blu-Ray drive for the Xbox 360.  The company quotes only a 3 percent adoption rate of the HD-DVD drive for the Xbox 360 as the reason.  Part of that is only because a format had not one when that add-on was released.  This will be, at least, a short term victory for Sony and the PS3.

It would be poor business on the part of Microsoft if it did not release a Blu-Ray add-on.  A Xbox 360 with a built-in Blu-Ray drive should also be in its plans as well if it wishes to maintain the “console war.”  The line-up could consist of a Blu-Ray add-on, a Xbox 360 with Blu-Ray (and WiFi) and the standard Xbox 360.

The company balks at these ideas saying it would rather concentrate on game development and its Xbox Live service.  That’s all well and good but should not rule out development of a Blu-Ray add-on for the existing platform.

What Microsoft has said essentially translates to “no current plans” for a Blu-Ray drive.  That could mean anything from “no comment” to “it’s in development but we can’t talk about it.”

If it does not ever release a Blu-Ray drive for the Xbox 360, I would call that the most foolish decision of the 21st century to date.

But, Sony would be laughing all the way to the bank.  The PS3 had a built-in Blu-Ray drive from the start and sure, all of us complained about the high price but now it’s paying out for Sony.

If Microsoft continues its line of “no Blu-Ray ever” for the Xbox 360, people will shift over to the PS3, provided developers shift as well.  If the market shifts, so will the game makers, trust me, it’s just business.  And if that happens, we can all kiss goodbye to the Xbox 360 legacy.

Maybe before that happens, Microsoft will pull themselves out in the nick of time with the Xbox 360 series 2 that has built-in Blu-Ray and WiFi and all that jazz.

As it stands now, the PS3 will surely be able to gain a lot of ground.

  1. will.... i hate the xbox:

it will not be the biggest mistake for m$ cos no one will buy it, cs the price of the 360 is around 350$ the u add the blu ray add on another 350$, thats more than wat the ps3 was wen it came out, no one will buy it, where as the ps3 has it built in and included in the price and its future proof, microsoft wont make the same mistake as sony did console war wise. microsoft s doing whats right to focus on live because digital downloads will be the future. i as a ps3 fanboy, future SCEE engineer for PS hardware and software, and ps3 owner belive that microsoft is would be better of without a blu-ray add on.

  2. G:

So long as EA and other major devs don’t go above 9 gigs for a game the 360 will continue to be fine.

  3. G:

    (Cont my above post).
That said, “The Show” will continue to dominate the Baseball franchises due to the fact that it’s more than a 9 gig game. The graphics, and gameplay are on a whole other level.

I’d like to see SONY branch out into more sports series (keeping the high standard set by “the Show”). I’d welcome a SONY attempt at football in 2010.

  4. Ivan_PSP:

EA is the worst video game company so that won’t ever help anyone especially not the dying Xbox 360. Sony wil destroy Microsoft cuzz Sony cares about games and everything electronic Microsoft just care about money. Blu-ray disc drive will always be better on PS3, PS3 is way more powerful and better system see all the proof.

  5. wolfking:

what ever happens sony are laughing microsoft dont add blu-ray to Xbox360, ps3 is the only system with a next gen movie media, microsoft do add blu-ray sony make money off microsoft.

  6. Adam:

xbox is screwed. the 360 sells for 350$ (pro packadge, the most popular and best value) So lets say they add-in a blue-ray drive and wi-fi. Wi-fi add-on is already 99$, so for good measure, lets say they half that price since its built in. so were looking at 50. Now if they also had a blue-ray built in, which there is no add-on to compare, lets say its 130$ like the hd-dvd add-on. Again lets half the price because its built in. thats 65$. 65+50+350= 465$. so the cheapest ps3 is 400$. so in other words there screwed if they want to compare apples to apples.

  7. Money:

Kind of funny ALL the MS fanboys were dogging the blu Ray Drive in the PS3 in the beginning and now every where I read most of them are saying “we will get a BD addon and it will be just as good as PS3″ man if MS releases a BD addon that would be priceless I really hope they do. How much did your 360 cost again.

    DEAR MS FANBOYS
Good luck on your fifth 360, and I hope Your HDDVD addon is doing well And You look real good with your new Blu Ray drive, Sexy.

P.S. Keep that Blu Ray addon updated I here its real nasty with some new BD movies.
OH no wifi well you gotta update it, better get that to boys

Well Im gonna get back to my overpriced PS3 with no technology and my crappy Library of games Know.

Bill thanks you for contributing to his retirement account.

The cost to benefit ratio simply doesn’t support the idea of Microsoft releasing a Blu-ray add-on.

I respect the fact that Sony created a more future proof system from the get go. Blu-ray, HDMI output, built-in harddrive, and wireless capability were good choices and allowed Sony to avoid having to release multiple iterations of their system as Microsoft has done with HDMI output on the Elite. BTW, that move still upsets me. I wanted a nice clean digital output for my HDTV and was upset that Microsoft didn’t include it on the 360 but I bought the ‘Premium’ edition thinking it was the best they were going to do. After all it was the PREMIUM edition. Then they go and release the ‘Elite’ package. How nice of you Microsoft. I thought HDMI wasn’t important?

Sony created the system with the features that they thought would be important for this generation and they did it right from the beginning. The more time goes on the more the wisdom of some of Sony’s decisions becomes apparent.

Last time I looked, the Xbox and PS3 were getting mashed by the Wii.. So, to use The same logic as this article, the Xbox should have a smaller CPU, motion controller thingies, terrible graphics and a shed load of games about sport, with little else, to compete with the market leader. At the moment the next gen competition is still young, and Xbox is winning, albeit with a closing margin. We know this. Why would they make another add on when the last one sold zilch? If the people don’t want it, why sell it? Seems stupid, to me.. Oh, and Clif, I know exactly how you feel with the ‘buying a package just for a better one to be released a week later’ deal! Ps3 did exactly the same thing.. In another years’ time, I think we will see the importance of huge storage capacity on discs.. At the moment though all I can say for sure is that Gears was on a DVD, and that still was a great looking and sounding game, so it can’t be that important.

  11. Confused:

Im confused here. Isn’t Blu Ray a sony product? Why would sony let Mircosoft have a Blu ray drive. I mean, they can but dont they have to ask sony? Im new 2 this stuff but………

  12. DHeraSa:

    @ Doober.

We used to say that a couple of years ago “the space of a CD is enough.” Do you think a Call of Duty 5 will fit on the 360 DVD? Not. The COD 4 was very short, and it is 6.31GB, just imagine if they make Call of Duty 5 with double the levels? Microsoft will be done right there.

DVD is done, it is just a matter of time. Wait and see. And Xbox is not winning, it came out first. It is just a time advantage. I bet you dont see some one who said “I bought my second PS3, but they have bought their second 360.

  13. OMEN:

PS3 uses bluray for GAMES,NOT ONLY FOR MOVIES,360 wont be able to do that.

  14. prepareforglory:

This is so stupid, in order for Microsoft to produce a blu-ray add-on they must get the approval of Sony, head of blu-ray. Do you really think Sony would hand Microsoft the golden ticket?? I dont think so

  15. clif:

    @ Doober
“Oh, and Clif, I know exactly how you feel with the ‘buying a package just for a better one to be released a week later’ deal! Ps3 did exactly the same thing..”

Well, I don’t see how it is the same thing at all.
Sony simply released another configuration with FEWER features and a LOWER price. So I don’t see how if you bought a PS3 at launch you are going to feel screwed over. On the other hand Microsoft held back fundamental features saying that they weren’t important and then later released new systems having MORE features and costing MORE. Not the same thing at all.

  16. trudat:

Blu ray is too expensive and not that important at this time most people are spending that money on gas and food. The country is headed for a recession and most homes do not have HD capable televisions at this time. Standard upconverting DVD players are still and will be for a very long time the market leaders. At the rate technology is progressing the life span of the fledgling blu ray will be quite short and unimportant in the HD entertainment domain. The rise of HD downloads and much faster internet connections will be the road most traveled for home entertainment with in the next 5yrs.The same as what is happening to the music industry with iTunes replacing the sale of CDs in this country. Soon you will have Netflix and Blockbuster streaming HD directly to your TV. Save your money and stick to the games.

  17. Odan:

i keep saying it and i will continue to say it.
Yes PS3 will outsell the 360 due to the blu-ray. But will not outsell it towards gaming.
Its a gaming console , not a dvd player , a music player , a picture viewer , a mini computer and a bar fridge.
Wii has that down pat , look at the sales. That thing takes both companies on with a single hand.
But regular old dvd’s are still outselling both blu-ray and HD formats. Who wants to buy a new “higher” definition player when they already have the dvd player and dvd’s to watch.
Why the PSP sucks, who wants more mini disks to watch movies when you can do something techincally illegal to watch movies on your PSP with a memory stick. (weird that its illegal to put a dvd you own onto a memory stick to watch it on your own PSP with people that would watch it on a tv with you anyways).
But seriously who cares , as other people say stick to the games and the 360 is the best.
Wii is great just too many repeat games.
And PS3 doesn’t have anything.. Oooo no not metal gear solid 4. Who cares its one game and it supposely its going to make or break the system from what i hear.
Eh games are games , i play what i like. Have fun who cares.
Just glad i didn’t buy that stupid HD player

  18. money:

    odan

    What are u smoking.

Actually it is a gaming console , a dvd player , a music player , a picture viewer , a mini computer and I here they are working on the bar fridge ADDon

well Like I said Earlier in this Post I’m gonna get back to my crappy Library of horrible Games now

Odan you might want to enter your tracking number into fedex to see if MS has shipped your 7th 360 yet.

    Good Luck with that

P.S. I here there is a great watercooling kit for the 360. Just sayin is all. I always try and look out for my fellow gamer.

  19. Sam:

How is the 360 dying? It’s got a fantastic games library with plenty more to come this year. A thriving user base and online service. It’s selling games and in fact npd figures show that for the month of february off the top 10 best selling game for that month 5 of them where 360 games (taking the top two spots) and only one was ps3. And that’s the bottom line folks, the games. Games are what sells consoles. That’s where the money lies.

I’ve never bought into the Blu-ray/ HDdvd argument either. They are both going to be made obsolete by the downloadable market.

Don’t get me wrong though I’m a PS3 fan also. The only reason I don’t have one is because there isn’t enough exclusives available yet for it to warrant me buying one, and the majority of my friends play xbox live. But to say the 360 is dying is just blind wishful thinking. It’s going to have a long beautiful life yet.

  20. Craig:

    Okay, 3 points.

    1. The PS3 is not “killing” the 360 by any means. A good look at the previous year will tell you that. Not to mention the fact that nearly every anticipated game will appear on both systems.

    2. I see the PS3 as being in the position of the original XBox in the last gen. Second place but still a very good system and financially strong. Frankly I think their never will be a clear winner in this gen and no true failure (though I do think the Wii fad is near it’s dying point). To pretend that one system will absolutely slaughter the other is pretty ridiculous and embarrassing.

    3. The type of movies a video game system can play should not matter for the quality of a VIDEO GAME SYSTEM.

    4. The size of a disc means nothing when you use it wrong. Read what nearly any developer says about the way the Blu-Ray disc is being used. Most of the space is being waste by forcing a game to load different copies of identical sounds, textures, etc. for each level.

    5. Sony could completely license the technology to MS. It wouldn’t be unusual at all. Don’t forget, they’d get a cut for every units that sells. The almighty dollar, you know?

  21. Craig:

    6. The Blu-ray/HDDVD debate is obsolete if the general public doesn’t accept them. Remember that the majority of Americans still don’t own HDTVs. The only other reason to own an HD disc of any kind is besides better resolution is the special features which most people I know couldn’t care less about.

    7. This blind fanboyism is annoying. On both sides. Come on people, at least try for a well put argument without resorting to name calling and amateur taunting.
