Are multi-platform releases really superior on PS3 over Xbox 360?

By Dave Parrack

Are multi-platform releases really superior on PS3 over Xbox 360?The majority of games released these days are multi-platform, getting released on at least two of the major consoles at roughly the same time. This is especially true of this generation’s PS3 and Xbox 360, but which console does the best job with these games?

Until the day that we possibly get a universal console which plays every game by every company on it, the debate continues to rage over which console has the best version of a game available for it. If you’re an owner of more than one console, then you may have to make a decision over which console to buy a certain game for.

The Wii doesn’t really come in to it, as it’s not capable of playing many of the games that developers are making, and consequently, third party support sucks. So it comes down to a straight fight between the Playstation 3 and the Xbox 360.

Gamepro decided to try and answer this question once and for all, in an article titled ‘PS3 vs. Xbox 360 ports: The cold, hard truth‘, but whether you choose to believe their conclusions or not depends which side of the fence you sit.

In the feature, they compared Assassin’s Creed, Burnout: Paradise, Call of Duty 4, and Devil May Cry 4, looking at controls, graphics, loading times and online integration. The results are fuzzy and more down to opinion than anything else.

For starters, the author of the post, Tracy Erickson, is clearly a fan of the PS3 Sixaxis over the Xbox 360 controller. On numerous occasions in the article, she (I assume) refers to the superiority of the Sixaxis for playing games with:

Assassin’s Creed - “The Xbox 360 excels with first-person shooters, but third-person action games…not so much. As such, the Sixaxis is better suited for free running about the ancient domains of Assassin’s Creed.”

Burnout: Paradise – “The Xbox 360 controller’s triggers feel better for acceleration than the L2/R2 buttons on a Sixaxis, but really, it’s a subjective point.”

Devil May Cry 4 - “Even though it lacks the vibration of an Xbox 360 controller, there’s no question the Sixaxis is better for playing Devil May Cry 4.”

I’ve heard many people argue the other way and chosen the Xbox 360 controller as the best out there, so this seems to be just about opinion rather than “the cold, hard truth”.

Then comes the conclusion which, surprise surprise, informs us that the Playstation 3 really is the choice for multi-format releases. But there are some huge leaps made to arrive at that conclusion:

“While we can’t definitively name one console as having better multi-platform releases across the board, there’s a clear winner among these four games: PlayStation 3 beats the Xbox 360 handily.”

“Judging by what we’ve seen with these recent games, you may be better off picking up PlayStation 3 versions of high-profile multi-platform games for the time being.”

There’s nothing wrong with including opinion in articles, and we do it all the time at BLORGE, but you can’t pass those opinions off as fact with a title and content which purports to be “the truth”.

There are very few differences between the multi-platform games released simultaneously on the PS3 and Xbox 360, and certainly not many that ordinary gamers would notice. But without any solid evidence whatsoever, Erickson is urging you to buy PS3 every time. That’s quite a jump, unless of course the writer herself is guilty of being a fanboy?

    1. Mornelithe:

I read the article too, I own a PS3 and even I can say that article was biased. Looking at what history has delivered thus far in multi-plat games. You have to give the nod to the 360, just because of the optimization that was done for the 360, but not for the PS3. Whereas, when the games are built ground up on the PS3 and the 360 (No ports), the differences are minimal at best. Sure, the controller preference is going to play a role, but that’s really not for the writer to decide, it’s up to the reader/consumer.

It all comes down to preference in the end…what games to you prefer? Are they available on both consoles? If not…there’s your answer.

    2. Timothy Tripp:

I own both a 360 Elite and a launch PS3 (upgraded to 160GB HD). Both systems are excellent, but there’s a huge problem with the PS3. The controllers “lose sync” occasionally and become unresponsive for 2-3 seconds. The games don’t pause, you just keep going in whatever direction you are walking, driving, etc. until the controllers re-sync.

Unfortunately, it’s not just an isolated incident this is all over the PS3 forums and it makes me buy the 360 version EVERY time I can. Maybe the DualShock 3 will fix it, we’ll see, but until then it’s much more deciding as a factor than a few FPS or slightly darker shadows.

    3. bigd:

Never ever had a controller lose sync on my launch ps3 and thats after playing over 100 hours on warhawk and completing uncharted and resistance, still working through assasins though. I also read the article on gamepro and it stated that for fps games the 360 controller was the better choice, seems like objective journalism to me. No chance of seeing that on blorge though. Practice what you preach guys.

    4. arty:

Ahh, I’ve read that article and it’s interesting how he compares just those games, and he leaves orange box, turok, lost planet and couple of more out. I thought that it was totally biased and just stopped ignored it. It seems that PS3 “fanboys” are scared that MS managed to put up such a fight adn even with RROD it still manages to keep up with ps3 sales excluding Japan.

But any way if you think that 360 version is better then get that, if you think ps3’s version is, then get that instead, simple as. For now I only have a 360 so the choice is obvious!

I don’t know if you are really saying that you own a ps3 or you are just a 360 owner trying to make the ps3 look bad, or you have a defective ps3 but, I had my ps3 for over a year now and I have never ever had this sort of problems. I can move all the way to the garage away from my ps3 and there is no problem what so ever… when I hit pause the thing will pause instantaneously with no issues at all. You may want to call sony and make sure yours is working correctly because this is just not true. By the way this is blue tooth and works excellent.

    6. Its fine.:

There’s plenty of biased crap against Sony online…PS3 is selling better than 360, thats all you have to say lol.

I love the sixaxis..great feel, light & rumble is no big deal…u want rumble, get the DualShock3.

As for games, the new heavy hitting multi-plat releases play much better on PS3…hdd load times or not, DevilMayCry4:PS3 destroys the 360 version.

Im sure in the future, 2009…we will in fact see all multi platform titles look and play beyond their 360 counterparts by 2009.

Seems as if Gears of War has already hit the 360’s graphical peak…haven’t seen anything better on 360 since, although the female character models looked awful and that says ALOT about the “graphics” ingame and how their used in the “spectacular” Male models, so lets not get carried away…in the end Lair ended up looking as great as Gears, so once again..don’t get carried away fanboys lol.

    7. Yncubus:

I know! It is hard to see ps3 earning some points.
Get used to it, cause it will start happening more often. Don`t expect to see 360 getting any better.

    8. hoehand:

I own both,I prefer the 360,hoever i think the ps3 will out last it and their games will get better.hands down fellas 360 games run smother and look better

    9. scurvy:

PS3 simply has better tech behind it, and is proving to be a better long term investment. That’s about it.
Now dont get me wrong i’m down for xbox, but in the future, PS3 will still be going, while microsoft will probably come out with xbox 720 or something to that effect. That article was basically saying that the PS3 versions are starting to get better, and the gap between them is finally closing.

      N4g!

    10. hoehand:

Oh i forgot nothing is better than LIVE

    11. HOLY BATMANS:

Of course this site thinks Gamepro is wrong.

This is a Microsoft-owned blog, correct?

    12. Noob:

LOL! YOU GUYS are calling HIM a fanboy?

Oh please, can you guys get any more 360-fanboy with your articles?

      gtfo.

    13. Jonathan:

      Thanks David,

I responded about 9 times to that stupid Article - maybe other game-review websites should follow your lead in asking for less biased reporting unless it’s clearly stated “fanbois.”

Especially when they choose to ignore such horrible ports for the PS3 like Orange Box and Lost Odyssey. And before any PS3 fanbois tries to tell me those both started on the Xbox - Wrong, Orange Box is a PC release ported over to Xbox and Pos3.

      Thanks,
      Jonathan

    14. Ps3 is ghy:

Eveybody hate Sixaxis. No reviewer or gamer I know or even on forums have ever said like it.

No rumble and the joystick are to close

Who ever mad that artical is being paid or retard.

    15. Microfony Hater:

I love My Playstation 360 it has live and bluray playback so much better than a comp! (Sike!)

    16. nas:

i completely agree with you Yncubus

    17. JB0956896:

Okay a few games are slightly better on the PS3. So what? Don’t forget about all the games that are clearly better on the 360. Because of the ease of porting PS3 to 360 we’ll probably never see a difference like the 360 had a year ago.

But still despite all that, in my opinion most of the 1st party PS3 exclusives look better than anything else available on consoles. Even crappy Lair looks good and from a technical standpoint crushes a lot of games. Then you have Uncharted which to me is the best.

    18. None given:

Really odd question. Ask any developer. The Xbox 360 has been getting superior ports almost every time. Sometimes noticeably. It’s all due to the PS3’s more complicated processor. That will change in time but for right now if you have both systems, it’s usually smarter to buy the Xbox 360 every time.

    19. ps3 lover:

I had my ps3 since launch and i just play on it day an night especially on pro with my brothers and friends and never once I had overheating problems or problems with my sixaxis. Im just soo glad i chose the ps3 and you should do the same because as time passes by games will be superior on the ps3 because of the cell processor

    20. Slayerking131 (psn):

Ya, i like the artical actually. Really, the sixaxis is better for 3rd person, and the 360 controller is better for first person. So what? I say its true! As the last person sayed, I own a launch ps3,(used at gamestop), and I never hae problems with it discconecting? When you get down to it, blue tooth is a far better connection than the 360’s 2.4ghz connection. Blue tooth doesnt run on the same frequency as: wi-fi, wireless phones, ect… where as 2.4ghz can interfere with thos things.

    21. Voodoo:

      bigd and Timothy Tripp:

I too have yet to “lose sync” with my controllers. Scratch that, the only time I “lose sych” is when I put in a PS2 game, then the system will tell me to press the PS button. I have yet (like bigd) to “lose sync” while playing a game. But unlike 360 owners out there, I am not going to say you are lying just because it “hasn’t happened to me yet”. After doing a search on the official playstation forum, I find a couple of instances, nothing of the wide spread issue you make it out to be, and there is a fix…press the reset button on the controller and go through the handshake process again.

As for both of these articles, the first one was definatly pro PS3, but I guess it has to go one way or the other right? The game developers are making sure that multiplat games are equal on both systems thus making it difficult for the fanboy to get a leg up. Despite the 360 having a year launch ahead of the PS3, the PS3 is already showing as much or more detail in its games. This is something big to be happy about as this so called “under powered dog of a system” is keeping up with the crowned prince. Interesting if you care to think on that for a second.

In 2007 you couldn’t get a good review of a game on the PS3 to save your life. Media hated it, so called gamers hated it, heck, even news stations hated it. But now in 2008, it is a complete reversal and it makes me think a lot of these places are “summertime friends”…in other words when you are smilling, we are smilling with you, when you are down, we are there to stab you in your back. Pathetic!

Having both systems, I can say that both are wonderful systems, and MY personal preference is the PS3.

    22. otakugamergt:

Don’t waste time with sony fanboys…
“seems like objective journalism to me”… lol… ignorant!!!

    23. cell:

its obvious that some people cant seem to take any type of negative feed back from their beloved Half-A** xbox 360, without them going for an all around bashing. Well why is it that the same people who so profoundly love their xbox360 cant all unite and find a way to make Microsoft take care of all those bad stories I’ve heard of, about how thier 360 died and now they feel ripped off. You guys should really just completely forget about the PS3 since your 360 has it all anyways. Formulate a constructive plan on how to make Microsoft be fair to you all PREMIUM LOYAL CUSTOMERS, after your 360 dies.

    24. Neelesh:

Okay…Case study Devil may cry 4

I ‘ve played the entire Devil may cry trilogy on my PS2, Hell I got a PS2 only after seeing the E3 presentation of DMC on the playstation 2…I recently got DMC 4 on the Xbox 360 and was a bit skeptical about the controls…but I swear it took no less than 15 minutes to adjust to it…yeah it did feel certain sections of the game were designed with the PS3 in mind but I barely noticed any so called hard cold truth that PS3 was superior…

    25. cell:

oh and about that infamous GAMEPRO article, in all honestly everything they said is true, the PS3 controller is better for 3d person action but the 369’s is better for FPS’s thats the truth, just ask any professional gamer around, oh but dont ask guys with fat hands, they prefer the very first xbox controller any day of the week. As for online stability: the truth is that this past Christmas thousands of XBOX 360 gamers were unfairly deprived of playing their brand new CALL OF DUTY 4 game, why you may ask??? well looks like XBOX LIVE just cant handle that much traffic nope, not even if your paying that VIP annual fee. Oh and dont get me started with UNREAL TOURNAMENT 3, since it might never make it to the 360, since MICROSOFT just cant afford to let their “superior” service be open, nope hell no, so that means no MODS either.

    26. lx1:

never have i lost sync on my ps3 controller and i had mine for over a year now, the ps3 is overall a better system prove me wrong.

    27. LastDance:

its all well and good to put up the BS flag when an article is baise. EVEN though its purely opinion(but also biase)…however..Where was all this flag raising when there was complete 100% baise articles pro xbox last year???? or the year before???? hmmm?

What … the ps3 is an utter failure? They should scrap it and start again?
Oh sorry?? could you link me to when you wrote a similar piece about that?

      thanks.

    28. nre:

Well it would seem like this author was an xbox fanboy because they clearly don’t like the ps3 that much. I seem to think of things very simple…. that is ps3 fanboys will find everything that good for their system and ignore all the negatives, the same is for xbox fanboys. Personally I am a ps3 fanboys (no hiding that). Moral of the story is it’s hard to write an article without seeming biased. Just pick a side and become a fanboy and support it no matter what. :P

    29. ps3guy:

with this lose sync problem it hasnt even hapened to me once yet. i personaly prefer six axis because i find the xbox controler bulky. but different peopl like different things, but in other things, like graphics you will start to see the ps3 being dominant eg haze has better graphics than halo 3 has to offer

    30. Big Rob:

Well, I own both consoles and ususally rent games from gamefly before buying… and lately, the PS3 version of most multiplat games has been better… especially since I play my PS3 using an hdmi cable. Assassin’s Creed & COD4 wasn’t such a big difference, although AC does feel better on the PS3 and looks slightly better. But Burnout Paradise is NO contest… it’s WAY better on the PS3.

    31. Big Rob:

@Tim Tripp, I visit the official ps3 forums and gamespot… and this is the I’ve EVER heard of anyone’s controllers losing synch. It’s certainly never happened with mine before… think you might be by yourself there buddy.

    32. Rick James:

I have never heard of anyone having synch problems with thier PS3 controllers. I’ve had my PS3 since launch and have never even heard of this problem. That’s a new one to me. Sounds like the YROD. As for the Gamepro article, so what! The PS3 gets props for once and everyone cries? What good is a game if your console doesn’t work? That’s my reason for going for the PS3 version of all multi platform games.

    33. Timothy Tripp:

The only thing I can think of on the controller sync problem is that it’s got to be related to the 2.4GHz bandwidth range of Bluetooth because that’s the same frequency as WiFi B and G, and a lot of cordless phones out there. Because 2.4GHz is an “open spectrum” there’s no real restriction on how much traffic there is in that range and there’s not a good way I know of to check. I do know that all the “range booster” access points they’ve been selling for the last few years are boosting up people’s home router ranges from the normal 100m range to 4-5 times that range, so it could just be noise in the frequency. It would be an interesting experiment to take my PS3 to a different location and see if it happens elsewhere.

Still though, there have been rumors that Sony has “fixed” the problem in the DualShock 3, so there must be SOME problem with it. Honestly I think it wouldn’t even be that big of a deal if they lose sync except that it takes so long to re-sync, so maybe that’s what they’ve fixed. I’ll pick up a DualShock 3 when they ship in the US and post a follow-up (here and everywhere else I’ve complained about this).

Seriously though, don’t think that just because you haven’t experienced a problem first hand that a problem doesn’t exist. According to the latest estimates 84% of 360 owners do not have a red ring problem, but that doesn’t mean that they should pretend there isn’t a problem.

    34. scooter:

I’m a playstation 3 owner and agree the article is biased. But come on. Is it really important to get upset about the semantics of the articles title? To clarify: most people who read these articles are pulling for one side or another so bias goes with the territory. The majority of us know this. More importantly the article is devoid of quantifiable data. No quantifiable data = opinion. We all know this. All anyone has to do is read the article and see that the wording works like “the ps3 version of is better,” as opposed to “the ps3 version of the is better because .” The printed word has portrayed opinion as fact since Gutenberg. To the author: what is your point?

    35. Phillip:

Wow. I hate how he recommends a PS3 instead of the 360 over his opinion.
I guess if you started with the ps1 and got used to that controller , then it would make sense to be much more used to the ps2 and ps3 controllers.
His statements don’t give really anything on the things that really matter most.
Such as performance, graphics, online play, etc.

    36. jesse:

      @its fine
You said that gears of war is the max that the 360 has gone. But u got to know, that gears of war till this day is the best virtually looking game of ALL CONSOLES. Im not sure whether you know, but the ps3 is also included. So unless the ps3 has come up w/ a game that beats your theory of gears of war. I suggest you rethink what you said. I admit, i own a xbox 360 and not a ps3. But i had all the generations before. And i think we have to give credit for the young xbox name for delivering with alot of things that the xbox1 was deprived of compared to the ps2.Fine eg are the used to be exclusive GTA,DMC,AC franchises. And graphics arent really everything, its what the games are. And i must say, i am impressed with the xbox’s current line up.But thats just me, i hated the FF series after 9. Though the ps3 might be coming out superiour in the end, i think microsoft will continue to deliver the best they can offer till the end. Like Fable! Main reason i bought the 360!

    37. bird:

get over your system superiorities, if the 360 or ps3 sucked it would not have sold so many consoles and games. just play your damn games and get over it. don’t hate one console because you own the other.
chevy better than ford, honda better than toyota…..just shut up with whats better and let the consumer decide lol. play your ps3 and 360 games and have fun, is that too hard to do….lol
well im gonna play lost odyssey right now, until mgs4 and ff13 come out and then i will play those games. i don’t give a crap about the controllers, hell, i hardly even notice any discomfort between either one. if you guys think the 360 or ps3 has a bad controller than none of you have probably ever owned a atari jaguar lol.

    38. Harry:

I really dont fully understand this argument in general. Dual platform games can only be targeted towards the lower spec machine as it will easily be transfered to the higher spec machine. If a game was design initially for the XBOX360 to utilise its full capability, it would have to be completely redeveloped to utilise the full capability of the PS3 and could ultimately be a completely different game. Assasins Creed for example was criticised for its repetitiveness, but if the PS3 had another 8gb commited to just depth and dialogue there would have been an obvious no contest.

    39. LIVE?:

“Oh i forgot nothing is better than LIVE” the reason you forgot is because online gaming on the PC shits all over LIVE… unfortunatly it hasnt stopped microsoft trying to charge for that aswell now *sigh*

    40. The Future of Sega:

      I ask myself……….do I care….

    41. Obby:

Haha just face it xbox 360…………well i would like to say it sucks completly but that would be a lie i have had 4 xbox 360 in the last month the only thing that was holding me back from throwing it in th garbage was the games but after the 4th one i was like screw the games since alot of games are coming out on ps3 anyway i got my dad to call m$ and of course i got someone half way across the world who could not even speak english and when that happened my dad had enough he yelled at him for an hour and then the man told us he would give us 400 back or a new 360 so i was like i am not taking that chance of one breaking again so i told him i would take the money so he told me he would get EB Games to get me a refund i donno why maybe cuz thats where i bought the crap console and when i went there to pick the money up the idiot never he phoned EB games to give me my money back:S i was so angry i stood there for an hour and finally got a hold of the same guy half way across the world and he told them to give me my money back. MS has the worst customer i hve ever seen they dont care about u they just care if they can suckker u into buying a crap console. so after all this i finally realized that the ps3 was the way to go no questions asked! M$ BLOWS

    42. jhf;enaouibn:

ya…360 beats ps3..with the look and feel of games…six axis sucks too

    43. Chris:

I have two Dual Shock 3 controllers, so scratch out the bit that says the DMC4 PS3 version doesn’t have rumble.

Anyways, I don’t really see the point of this article. Multi platform games are multi platform games… that’s it. The exclusives are pretty important. Resistance, Motorstorm, Ratchet, Uncharted, Unreal Tournament III, Heavenly Sword, Folklore, Eye of Judgment, and Warhawk are all amazing games. With Haze, MGS4, GT5, God of War III, Killzone 2, and LittleBigPlanet coming, this season will have one of the greatest lineups in video game history.

And we all have GTAIV to look forward to ;)

    44. Chris:

Well, my Sixaxis loses “sync” sometimes and my PS3 is a 3-weeks after launch system. And I tell you .. it pisses me off when it does. But lately it hasn’t soo it’s all good :D (2 out of .. I guess everyone else .. has sixaxis sync problems)

    45. iky:

k… i own a ps3 and know that it is a wicked machine. however, in the present games are running more smoothly on the xbox because game developers know the system better. in the early futre i believe the ps3 will overtake the xbox graphically simply becasue of the power it provides. however……. u can easily tell that this review is definatly BIASS becasue they are not backing up their opinoins.

    46. G:

I too have had sych problems with my sixaxis. (It’s always during CoD4).

I wonder why the article didn’t mention the EA titles. They are clearly (or were for a long time) better on the 360.

Bad article. Not much in there.

    47. Obby:

Isnt Burnout a EA Title? And it clearly works better on PS3?

    48. bleh:

They are both good systems. No RRod death would have made the 360 even better. At this point the 360 has the games and the Online(wich is wonderful and stupidly hobbled at the same time) hands down.Ms had a chance to make this system look perfect but slacked on QC.

Ms has done a good job of making great games, looks like the Ps3 is following suit.
In the Ps2 days 1 out of 20 games where even worth turning the system on for so even though there where thousands of titles 80% where garbage.Quality over qauntity people.

I am sure the clan at MS plans to let the PS3 hit it’s stride and release the next XBox wich if done right will leave the Ps3 looking more like the Ps2.

    49. chamber:

I think most of the 3rd or 4th gen multi-platform titles are going to a start their production cycles on playstation 3 then be ported to to the 360. Developers seemed to figure out that thats the secret to a smoother development cycle. This could give the ps3 the slight advantage, it might be minimal depending on the title but it could be enough to make a difference.

These 4 are some of the newest games out their, so i think it shows that developers are figuring out the quirks of the PS3.

    50. billy:

Sorry, but the controller synch problems, and a shoddy online system caused 3 of my coworkers to sell their ps3 and get 360’s. It’s pretty interesting that the 360 had early problems, and is still killing the ps3 with it’s hardcore gaming base, and online structure.

    51. ty:

I had to chime in on the cell processor some clown above spoke about! The ps3 will never pull away graphically from the 360. The 360 is pc gaming based, as in the programming is what the market, and programmers are used to. The cell is amazing for physics, BUT it’s not built for gaming. That’s why it’s newer hardware than the 360, but they can’t get anything more out of it than the 360. The basis is Sony continues to lie about every hardware piece they put out. Remember the emotion engine and how we just had to wait till they tap the potential?!?!?! Lie, lie, lie, and sony fans eat that shat up. Seriously, the 360 is the hardcore gamers choice, the wii is the mass appeal, and the ps3 is trying to be a blue ray player with a weak “there is no free lunch” online system. No wonder it’s in 3rd place, and staying there.

    52. cell:

The fact of the matter is that last year and the year before that,The PS3 seemed like a complete failure, so many hypocrites even went as far as directly attack the PS3 in its early infancy, news site would find any for, shape, type of negative feed back about the PS3, and post it, because they knew that would boost their hits. It became a trend in 2007″bash the PS3″. They even said, the whole hardware project should be scrapped, basically a complete recall. No one seemed to like Blu RAy, nobody was impressed by the software, and no one agreed that paying for online play was just wrong. Now the tide has turned, to me the XBOX 360 needs a real recall of all systems sold prior to 2007. BluRAy is in all its glory with full support from everyone in the movie industry, and paying for online play is seriously becoming a joke. Come to think of it the whole XBOX 360 issue is becoming a joke. Am I a PS3 fan?? you can bet on that, why?? because I like to shoot for reliable hardware and exceptional service. The 360 has great games, but in this instance those games are worthless if you have to wait 3-4 weeks to play them.

    53. joe:

never had the aforementioned ‘problem’ of ps3 controllers not syncing,

maybe you have a faulty one?

    54. Erichonius:

I believe your article was well reasoned…. but I must question the logic behind the timing.

The majority of your article plays upon the other author’s opinions of the controlers (ps3,360). Saying there is no subjectivity behind these conclusions…..

May I ask then, why do you write an article refuting the “truth” of these kind of assertions now?

These same controller arguments have been used over the last year with the (majority) concluding that the 360 controller is better. The most common logic given for this conclusion is that the 360’s controller weighs more therefore feels “less cheap”.

to a simular argument about the “feel” of the R1 of ps3 vs trigger of 360 in which the ps3 was favored you said….

“I’ve heard many people argue the other way and chosen the Xbox 360 controller as the best out there, so this seems to be just about opinion rather than “the cold, hard truth”..”

and yet I never observed you writing articles refuting the objectivity of any of these other reviews. The only difference the conclusion being that the 360’s controller was not favored for every game in this other author’s article (360’s controller was favored for 2 of the 4).

So I will ask you one final question, “how are you any better than this obvious ps3 “fanboy”, when you only claim to see “fanboyism” when it doesnt favor the 360?”

No you are not a “Fanboy” Mr. Dave Parrack you are worse……….. a hypocrite!

    55. ben:

I own both consoles, but in the end it comes down to preference, to me the majority of the multipaltform games run and look better on 360

but this could be becouse of the extra time the develoeprs have had to get use to the 360.

and nobody can say either console is better than the other fopr heaven sake both sides grow up

each console has tehre strengths and weeknesses the 360 has limited space on cds and hasnt got the hard drive requirement so games can run slower.

but the ps3 ALSO has disadvantages of where the Blueray drive is slower to read than the 360.

I point out that the blueray drive is only the first gen but being the first gen in the ps3 it has in a way crippled the ps3. looks at dmc4 and lsot planet and otehr companies where they have been having issues with streamign data from the ps3

I got both consoles i paly xbox alot mroe than my ps3 atm, but this year my ps3 will also be getting alot of love so both consoles win in there own way

    56. mark:

lol @ the person who said GeoW was the best game graphically on any console.
I mean, even BioShock beats it in graphics, let alone Uncharted, Lair, Mass Effect, Lost Oddessy, and DMC4. Heck, even Halo 3 had portions of its graphics that were superior.

Also, WTH is with saying the other article was totally wrong? I agree that it was biased, but is what you said any less biased? IMO, the PS3 is superior with Burnout Paradise and DMC4, the 360 is superior on Assassin’s Creed, and CoD4 is too close to call, but I would give it to the 360 because of in-game soundtracks and messaging.

    57. Grievous Angel:

We just bought a PS3 40GB along with F1, Virtua Fighter, Motorstorm, and Ratchet and Clank. We’ve had one XBOX 360 for 2 years and another now for about 6 months (we have two–the first one is still going strong but has been demoted to the kids rooms).

I’m going to continue to buy the XBOX 360 versions of multiplatform games primarily because of:

      1) Most games still start as development with the 360
      2) Achievements - yeah, that seems silly but it makes a difference
      3) Online Play - my friends are on Live and XBOX Live is a much better experience
      4) Controller - the XBOX 360 controller is superior in every way to the PS3 controller, which is a holdover from all the way back to the PS1 when they tacked on the thumbsticks. The triggers stink, the thumbstick placement stinks, and it doesn’t have rumble.

Having said that, the console hardware is nicer for the PS3, it came with Blu Ray, so it was a good value, but we’ll probably limit our purchases to things we can’t get on the 360. My kid’s been really enjoying “Pain” and “Ratchet and Claink,” both PS3 exclusives.

    58. Binks:

Now that you can get a 360 pad for the PC, and there are quite a few game ports(NFS, FIFA, etc), and has technically prowess over either 360 or PS3(if you can build a worthy machine), you could almost say that thats the best console around. Definately no doubt in the graphical power when you see a game like crysis running on high settings, let alone come maximum settings. But I suppose thats going off topic, in my books, 360 is still currently on top

    59. moose o death:

why does everyone think the ps3 has more potential than an x360? if your referring to cell you have no idea what your talking about. if you mean the gpu rsx vs xenos the x360 wins hands down.

the cpu makes little to no difference to the appearance of a game. it handles the thinking about a game, is the player pressing buttons, is an AI trying to decide where to run off too. the gpu does the hard work of drawing it all on your screen. the x360 gpu is an entire generational leap ahead of the ps3 chip. 48 unified shader’s versus 24 pixel and 8 vertex shaders. both running at 500MHz anyone who still thinks the ps3 rsx is 550 needs to get a more reliable source than wiki.

games like frontlines have been canned on ps3 because streaming direct from blu-ray isn’t fast enough to load the data in time. anyone who’s played a streaming title on the x360 knows about the texture pop-ups. imagine loading that data 33% slower and you can plainly see where the fault lies. dmc4 had to install data so it could stream from the hard drive, officially making them one of the devs to give up on bluray.

honestly the x360 is a better gaming machine in my opinion, the ps3 edges it out on media functions because it’s also a blu-ray player. if your like me you don’t care about movies, so buy whichever has the exclusives you want.

for me that’s games like fable, mass effect, fallout 3, too human looks alright, frontlines is fun. so obviously i’m better off with an x360. if you were a final fantasy fan and could stomach metal gear’s ridiculous storyline. then youd be better off with a ps3.

    60. Yncubus:

We have seen this movie before. Problem is, Sony`s expertise in gaming consoles, far exceeds MSFT. Obviously, it all started with the first xbox and, the way it was sadly burried just 3,5 years after its debut. Ps2 still selling 400k per month worldwide (120 000 000 overall )
wich is pretty amazing considering the “fearse” opposition.
Xbox sold about 24Milion units! It`s not bad, but they couldn`t have done better. So,… they have failed “killing” the ps2, twice already! 360 was built to far exceed the ps2, kill it while they were at it and gain momentum in the videogame industry,by being released before the Ps3. Turns out that Ps2 is still out there, very much alive, old but doing fine. No one had the guts to question sony`s quality and reliability for years. Same can`t be said about microsoft.
The 360 is obviously more advanced than ps2, but it can`t be compared to the inovative Ps3.They`re just completly diffent! We see devs complaining about how much work they have developing games for the system, because they got used to the easy-money-lazy, relaxed pc like arquitecture of 360. Most of them made their name making games for the older ps siblings. Ungreatfull bastards! I would rather spend my money on a medium sized tower ,get myself some harware parts and build my own “Xbox360″ at home. So much for a the “truly” amazing hardcore gaming console. At least sony had the decency to do something from scratch and bring something new and original to the gaming market, not just some 400$ pc built into a micro tower. Since ps3 as been released, we all have heard the nastiest things about the system. Because it was a dust magnet, the fingerprints, the glossy finish. well, i would pick the ps3`s slick design over the 360 at anytime of the day. Some say it looks like a fax machine? well, at least it doesn`t look like a toaster with a pretty expensive add-on catalogue you get to “choose” stuff from. Actualy they forgot to add a thermostat,…it would be awesome to have the temperature under control. Maybe they`ll just blame global warming or expand the warranty! Meanwhile lets just criticise Sony for being creative, for improving the gaming console concept and for being furthermore reliable than msft along the years…..

    61. Suntzu:

I don’t know what is up with these Consoles Wars Xbox360 vs PS3. I for one have all three systems my youngest son has the Wii my second oldest has the 360 and I have the PS3 I’ve played all three system and in all honesty PS3 is by far the better console. People complain about the price $599. Then they went on to say the system has no games. They also say it hard to develop for. My son sometime bashes my PS3 “Dad why didn’t you get a 360 everyone we know has one”. family, friends and so forth the reason I got a PS3 is because I am MGS fan. I remeber way back when PS1 hit the gaming industry Cats where like yo that shit dope. then PS2 soon after that Xbox entered the industry. Nintendo seem to just stay way out left field sticking to the more family oriented games Mario. Zelda and so fourth. Honestly the only game the original Xbox that left me in aw… was Ninja Gaiden and Ninja Gaiden Black. Halo is not all what it’s cracked up to be, Fable was wack for an RPG the only gimmick Xbox has was LIVE and honestly how many of us had broadband in our homes. I believe the tech was fairly brand new. Now I am not say PS3 doesn’t has it fault’s either with delays after delays I mean they had a year to get all this up and runnin’ like Home and in game XMB and a few other things. Here is a ? what has MS done to have such a loyal fan base?. I just have this last thing to If you perfer an Xbox 360 then by all mean play your console of choice and vise versa. But the bashing of console needs to stop.

    62. Mickie:

Sony being Creative? Is that sarcasm. What is so creative about the PS3? There triggers aren’t new, nor is the motion sensing. Oh, are you saying that the “Cell” is creative. Well, their creativeness is stupid because the cell processor is is most complicated processor you could use for games. Well I gues that they were trying to be so creative that they forgot the main point. The system is a gaming machine which should be optimised for gaming. They forgot about that when they decided to include the Cell and Bluray. The Cell is causing games to take longer and cost more to make, and the bluray drive is too slow for streaming.

    63. FLUPH:

Its interesting that a lower priced console (360) released a whole year before another (PS3) can still keep up with and even exceed the latter in graphical & gaming prowess.

As a fact, no fanboism, it is impressive.

    64. moose o death:

so much anger. before you start calling the ps3 a new and innovative design. hard drive, cpu, graphics card memory, optical drive power supply inputs…strangely i think that’s a pc.

you want to build an x360 good luck with that. tri core with hyperthreading, NOT an off the shelf part. microoft had the xenon built and owns the specs.

you want to build a ps3 yourself you’re in with a chance, ibm owns the cell chips so they are a commercial part. nvidia still sells 7800gt’s with 256MB memory, blu-ray pc drives exist, in fact you could buy one that spins faster then 2 speed. the hard drives are literally off the shelf. the ps3 is more unoriginal than the x360.

at least the x360 had parts that were new and innovative when it released, unified shaders didn’t hit the pc space until vista landed. multicore pc stuff still isn’t common.

i’m not really one camp or the other, i owned a ps1 and ps2, but the games i play are on the american console. but looking at real figures it’s pretty easy to see the ps3 is behind the x360. the only thing the ps3 really beats the x360 in is flops. and i’ve always thought it funny that ps3 fanboys were proud that a ps3 can flop twice as fast as an x360.

    65. Mike:

9 of my 360’s broke and LIVE didn’t even work then I bought the ps3 with CELL and BLUE RAY. Had it since launch with no problems, def recommend it.

    66. Dan:

I have both systems and the thing that always makes the 360 come out on top is it’s XMB.

I can listen to my own soundtracks in most of my games and talk with my friends regardless of which games we are playing.

Right now on the PS3, it’s up to the developers to basically put in chat features from scratch and many of them don’t (see Rock Band).

The PS3 feels so lonely compared to the XBOX 360…hopefully home will change that (and if it doesnt, it’s just going to be more lonely walking around a huge 3-D world without people in it)

As for that article, stating, “There are very few differences between the games” and then stating that the PS3 readily comes out on top is definitely a fan boy-ism.

The PS3 was released too soon and so was the XBOX 360…but what really matters is THE GAMES. Anyone telling you there are “tons” of great games on the PS3 has no sense of reality. There are a few good games, but the sheer volume of titles available on the XBOX 360 makes that the winner at the moment.

Even funnier is when the PS3 fan boys talk about, “Sure, you might like the 360 if you like shooters!” and then talk about how great Resistance, Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted and Unreal Tournament are in the same breath.

Basically it comes down to this:

The 360 was rushed out and has had hardware problems, but has great features built into it’s dashboard (including a great XMB), tons of great titles you can buy has awesome downloadable content.

The PS3 was rushed out with great hardware and multimedia features…but without developer support, just a handful of games actually worth playing, mediocre downloadable content, no XMB or community options.

But when it call comes down to it, its about THE GAMES…and the 360 has the PS3 beat right now. Talking about the “potentially great games” the PS3 is coming out with does not do the gamer who owns a PS3 any good. Especially when they are notorious for being delayed.

I have hopes for the PS3 this year, but Im not holding my breath.

    67. Mike:

When it comes to multi-format release, there’s only one question? which should be lead development? the answer: ps3, since the 360 was launched earlier and obviously had a lead in sales multi-format games where done with 360 leading, and this was bad for gaming as we enterd the generic stage of too many FPS’s all using that dam unreal engine, multi format release went rubbish for a while and the ps3 version’s came off worse as developers had trouble porting from dvd to blu-ray. Then once ps3 sales begin picking up and now skyrocketing (in the uk ps3 reaches 1 mil faster than the ps2 whch took 50 weeks and the 360 that took over 60 weeks) and analyst now predict ps3 to overtake 360 in europe by summer and worldwide sales by end of year, I won’t even mention Japan and the rest of Asia as it may cause to much embaressment to 360 owners and ps3 has even recently beat 360 on it’s own turf. We have subsequently seen more ps3 led development games and multi platform games have become good again, DMC4, COD 4, Assassin’s Creed all ps3 led and it shows particular graphically. The best example is to compare EA’s recent switch Need for Speed Pro(360 led) and Burnout Paradise (PS3 led) the differnece between the games is phenominal and only a month between them. Luckily we will start seeing the advantages of ps3 exclusives and it’s blu-ray discs this year with the likes of MGS4, the agency, FF13, RFOM 2, Killzone 2 and more and so will devwlopers of multi format games who will begin to use more time and money to getting the most out of blu-ray and ps3 whose power has barely been tapped yet.

    68. Steve09:

Wait wait wait and you’ll see. That’s all I hear about the ps3. The next gen begun 2 years ago. I take my hat off to any loyal sony fan who has waited all this time for MGS4 or GT. PS3 has been such a let down up until now but it’s starting to pick up although they seem to have lost the hardcore market to 360 which would explain their massive games sales revenue compared to ps3

    69. madjoe:

Yeah I think LIVE and the free headset won over the hardcore audience very early on especially with gears. I can’t count the amount of tense battles I had in that game with some unbelievable players online when it was first released. I always said I would trade in if ps3 came good but I’m yet to be convinced and 360 have too many good exclusives now sony need to step up

    70. Jon:

Dude, I’m sorry, but I have had a PS3 since January 2007, and I have NEVER had any problems with the controller “losing sync”. The only thing I that even comes close is when you have the controller plugged in to charge it, when the controller is charged and I take the cable out, it takes ~1.5 sec for the PS3 to “assign” it to a port, and then off I go. I have logged almost 125 hrs on Warhawk alone and I have never been killed when I disconnected the wire from my controller.

    71. moose o life:

I believe this whole controller synch issue on the PS3 is a bunch of BS being posted by the same guy through this whole blog. I have never heard of this issue and I have never heard of anyone mentioning it on any other blogs or articles since the launch of the PS3. Nice try blanco nino.

      @moose of death
“the ps3 is more unoriginal than the x360″
HAHAHAHAHAHAH. Don’t make me piss my pants.

    72. Josho:

lol the six axis really sucks and i dunno why the the reviewer would support it. Anyways id say both the ps3 and 360 have prospects for the future, but i think ill stick to 360 after playing both.

    73. Yncubus:

      moose of death;
sorry for hurting your feelings. Have i lied? No! Or can`t you see past the blind fold you are wearing. No one likes to see their console called a piece of shit. But that`s exactly what most of 360 fans do here. Anything good can`t be said about the PS3 cause you all come out here to say it was a biased opinion.
Ps3 is not even 1 year old in Europe…and wether you like it or not it is pretty creative and multifunctional. You shouldn`t criticise people for telling the truth… Give me a few really good reasons to buy a 360 and i will tell you what i think of it! ok? It would sure take a lot more than Gears of war, but never knows::::let`s be constructive, not destrutive….after all we should all be happy not to have the game console market monopolised. That would be very bad for all gamers in general. It is great to have 2 or 3 diferent consoles .

    74. madjoe:

Ok here’s a few reasons yncubus, exclusives that can’t be played on ps3 are

      Bioshock
      Gears ————- (sequel this year)
      Halo 3
      Forza 2 ————(sequel this year)
      Command&Conquer3 (sequel this year)
      GTA4 Episodes —–(October)

Not a big list but they are all triple A titles and I am lucky enough to own them all except gta4 Episodes. I’m sure sony fans will pick holes in that list but the sales speak for them selves and are all console sellers in their own right.

You can download HD films straight to your hard drive from LIVE marketplace without the need for a disk and TV shows like lost are on their way.

You can speak to your xbox friends or hotmail contacts while you play your games and even play music from your hard drive at the same time and video chat also. Command & conquer 3 is a great example of the video camera in action during multiplayer.

These may not convince you but have convinced 18 million others.

    75. guyva1331:

Wow, some of you guys get overly emotional when it comes to this ps3,360 thing. It’s a matter of choice. U dont need to tear a man down b’cos he prefers a ps3. Its his choice damn!

    76. riptonic:

I have had my ps3 since the 2nd week after launch, and i to have had “sync” problems with my controllers. It doesn’t happen to often so it’s not that big of a problem. Die, Deal with it, Move on.

    77. riptonic:

It does happen though. Although I have a lot of other friends with ps3’s and they have not had any problems with their controllers, so maybe i just got unlucky. It happens maybe once every 5 hours of play and for less than 10 seconds.

    78. guyva1331:

Besides, the only reason why i own a 360 now is because, as a hardcore gamer, it appeals to me more than the ps3 or wii (i STILL own a ps2 btw). I only switched b’cos Sony pissed me off by trying to force a format on gamers (blu-ray). Hey, it was the gamers that made the ps2 a success right? Like i said b4, choices & preferrences.

    79. Yncubus:

madjoe; i understand that ps3 has its ups and downs, but the 360 as well. 360 has great games and one of the reasons why is, because it has been out and around over one year ahead . The problem is, why is it so hard for some 360 users, to admit, or even let us ps3 users enjoy the fact that our choice (ps3) is growing better. If in about one year, the ps3 still can`t match the games, or software improvements the 360 has already shown, then i will have to say you are wright. this is not an excuse to our system problems, it`s the reality of things. “A child has to learn how to walk before it will be able to run…..”

    80. kevin:

if this is true, one has to wonder why the 360 version of multiplat games tend to score higher reviews than the ps3 versions. it’s really sad they count the REMOVAL of dual shock as somehow a good thing.

    81. Chad:

I would say that PS3 is a far better buy. If I wanted a 360 game I would get it for pc. Almost every 360 exclusive is out for pc. And they look better on pc. This year is also looking way better for the PS3. GT5, Killzone 2, MGS4, Little Big Planet, Home, Haze, Final Fantasy 13, The agency, Resistance 2, Uncharted 2. Now how does Gears of War2 and Fable 2 beat that. I also like that the Playstation 3 has an internet browser. Its nice to watch youtube on a big screen tv without it getting blurry, it comes in really clear. I also stream movies from the internet without paying. You cant do any of that on the 360. And the PS3 continues to get better every firmware update. The Ps3 is far better. 360 fanboy’s just get mad when they here somthing negative about it, but its all true. Soon all 3rd party devs will be developing games on PS3 first and then porting to 360 because the games turn out much better on both systems.

    82. coldfusion:

Really odd question. Ask any developer. The Xbox 360 has been getting superior ports almost every time. Sometimes noticeably. It’s all due to the PS3’s more complicated processor. That will change in time but for right now if you have both systems, it’s usually smarter to buy the Xbox 360 every time.

    83. Serious:

      Chad,

It may be true that 360 console exclusives wind up on the PC, however you need a pretty good PC to run these games. The price of a good gaming PC, or even updating the parts, is normally a lot higher than the price of a 360.

I don’t know about you, but I would prefer to pay $300 for a 360 to play Bioshock rather than paying $3000 to buy a PC capable of running it smoothly.

    84. Dizzle:

      @Kevin

The reason why most multiplat games scored higher on the 360 version was because the 360 came out a year earlier then the PS3 which in turn allowed Microsoft to have millions of systems sold ahead of the PS3. Also since the 360 had been out first, developers were able to create games for this console first, giving them some hands on experience on the 360. After the PS3 came out and it was time to start creating multiplat games, the developers starting creating for the 360 first (since they already had a full year experience), then they were porting the game over to the PS3. So in turn the 360 version turned out great and the PS3 version was shit. The devs were having issues porting these games over to the PS3, thus leaving us gamers with sad PS3 versions.

That will all change now. The PS3 has 10.5 million units against 360’s 18 million, so the devs want to make sure that the PS3 version isn’t dicked(in order to make more money). What they have found out is that it is easier to create the game on the PS3 first (like Burnout, Devil May Cry 4) then port it over to the 360, or create the two separate versions using two different teams. Check the latest news on PS3 titles and you will see that they are no longer being ported over from a 360 version.

      http://www.psxextreme.com/ps3-news/2557.html

So to answer your question about why 360 versions of multiplat games tend to score higher reviews, well that is why. This year all of that will change.

    85. madjoe:

Chad sorry but most people I know went out and bought the 360, not a PC. I’m not sure about that $3000 remark but I know they have to be pretty powerful to play 360 games and require a few upgrades which I can’t see a lot of people being bothered.

And also chad the majority of those games you mentioned are shooters, so much for all you ps3 fans claiming you’re above those games.

    86. kevin:

sorry Dizzle but those sound like more promises of what will be. Unfortunately, EVERY single promise surrounding the ps3 has failed. I don’t see your prediction as any different. Will time tell? of course, but from what’s been released and what’s releasing easily has the 360 as the better gaming machine. ps. don’t use a PS site as proof of anything. They are not objective on any level.

    87. Obby:

ps3 is better get over it u dumb ppl man just wait till like 2009 xbox will release a new console and it still wont match up to ps3 just like xbox and playstaion 2
