After the Blu ray vs HD DVD war came to a crashing end last week with the HD DVD format being declared dead, there was intense speculation over how Microsoft would react. It seems, for now at least, there are no plans for an Xbox 360 Blu ray drive.

As society begins placing more and more blame on media like video games and movies for random acts of violence, the legal implications of where exactly video games stand in relation to the Constitution as well as federal and state legislation are growing heavier. Of the people who could adversely or positively affect the legal future of gaming, Conservative Supreme Court Justice Scalia could be one of the most significant.

According to analysts, the Blu ray Vs HD DVD battle to become the high definition format of choice has had a knock on effect on console sales. What’s more, now that the war is over, with Blu ray being declared the winner, the PS3 could see a massive increase in sales thanks to Sony’s forward thinking.

With prices on other HD-DVD players falling like lead balloons, price cuts on the Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive is no doubt in the future. Toshiba is slashing prices all across the board and since it makes the Xbox 360 drive, it’s only a matter of time. But, if you were hoping to unload your HD-DVDs or Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive at games shops, you have another thing coming.

In the aftermath of the horrific tragedy that befell 5 students of North Illinois University, anti-video game activist attorney Jack Thompson was quick to point a vindictive finger at gamers and the industry. This time, however, the media didn’t immediately jump on the bandwagon; MSNBC released a scathing piece criticizing both Jack Thompson and all those who would more quickly blame video games for society’s degradation than look inside themselves for an answer as to why society has become so violently depraved.

The Red Ring of Death problem on Xbox 360s is over isn’t it? Well, Microsoft would have you believe so, to make sure it doesn’t lose any more ground against the PS3 and Wii, but unfortunately the evidence on very public display suggests otherwise.

With the Nintendo Wii continuing to dominate hardware sales in this console generation, despite being graphically, and technically inferior to rivals PS3 and Xbox 360, it seems the vultures are moving in, and using scaremongering against the console.

As if the rumors that Microsoft has a brand spanking new Blu-ray drive add-on ready for release by May aren’t enough to get your 360-addicted blood flowing, try this on for size: Microsoft has begun assembling a team to develop and release a completely new Xbox Live service that is intended to hook “mainstream audiences.”

With the death of HD-DVD announced by Toshiba, existing HD-DVD hardware, media and movies will be sold at reduced prices just to get rid of the now useless things. Which puts Microsoft in the awkward position of having to adopt Blu-Ray for the Xbox 360 which was a supporter of HD-DVD.
