Isn’t spin a wonderful thing? It can make even the most dire news seem fantastic. When it comes to the latest hardware sales figures, it means that Microsoft can manage to make everything look rosy in Xbox land when clearly it isn’t.
There was I thinking that this generation console war had all but been sewn up by Nintendo, with the Wii selling in such huge quantities each month that it could never hope to be caught by the PS3 or Xbox 360, but it seems not, at least if you pay any attention to what market research firms say.
Is this a sign of things to come? The PS3 may be overtaking Xbox 360 sales in the UK by summer but it turns out that the PS3 has already beaten Xbox 360 on its home turf. For the month of January, the PS3 moved up to the number two spot in US sales and pushed the Xbox 360 to the number three spot. The Nintendo Wii remained number one.
Life as a 360 owner is swell…until your console displays what has become known as the “red ring of death.” Though poll results and estimates have been topsy turvy regarding the 360′s failure rate, a new poll claims that the 360′s deplorable failure rate is 5 times greater than that of the PS3 or Wii.
It’s no secret that the so-called “backwards compatibility” for PS2 games on the PS3 went from bad to horrible to not working at all. Current generation PS3s lack any PS2 hardware and rely on software emulation which doesn’t work very often, if at all. The company may soon offer downloadable PS2 games “made” for the PS3 over the PlayStation Network.
The PSP is the ultimate portable gaming machine, there is almost nothing it can’t do, there’s even a version of Skype for it. The only thing that could make it better is to do away the the UMD format and equip it with a touchscreen. Only now have Blu-Ray discs been available in such a small form factor. Just don’t expect it to come to the PSP very soon and there’s no guarantee that it will.
Another game has entered the my console is better than yours debate, with The Club reputed to be graphically superior on the Xbox 360 than it is on the PS3, even though both versions of the game were made at the same time by the same people.
Sony has sold one million PS3s in the UK so far. This means the PS3 has sold faster than the PS2 before it. If sales stay at this level, the PS3 will be set to overtake the Xbox 360 by summer.
The Wii’s latest nickname, earned for entertaining therapy is “Wiihabilitation” and it points toward a core difference between the Wii and competing PS3 and Xbox 360, which focus more on hardcore adult gamers.
