iSuppli analysts predict Wii owners to buy PS3 as second console
The Wii is continuing to kick the PS3 and Xbox 360 where it hurts, right in the sales figures, but analysts are now predicting the Nintendo console may have had its year in the spotlight, and should now prepare to hand over to one its rivals.
Last month, analysts at iSuppli predicted that the Playstation 3 will overtake the Wii in total unit sales and become the market leader. This month, they have gone one step further, and predicted that 2008 will be the year that Sony will one day look back on as the “turning year”.
As the news came through that the Wii had outsold the PS3 in Japan by 4 to 1 during the month of January, iSuppli analyst Pamela Tufegdzic told Reuters:
“2008 will be a turning year for the PS3.”
“Sony is offering a better forthcoming software pipeline with blockbuster titles like ‘Gran Turismo 5′, which will boost PS3 sales this year.”
“We anticipate Sony will have another price slash on the PS3 this year, and come Christmas, consumers who originally bought the Wii will likely purchase the PS3.”
That last line especially is significant, as it predicts that Wii owners will be migrating up the chain to PS3. Thinking about it, this does seem very possible, as not only will the PS3 likely get at least one price cut over the next 9 months, the exclusive games scheduled to be released on the system this year will make it a must have on many people’s Christmas lists.
Couple all of that with the possibility that Wii owners may have got bored of the novelty factor of the console, and frustrated at the lack of decent third party titles being released for the system, and you have a chain of events which could lead the PS3 to ultimate victory over its rivals in the near future.
The Playstation 3 has another ace up its sleeve, and one which may be the reason Wii owners choose it over Microsoft’s Xbox 360: Being a cheap Blu-ray player. Now that HD DVD is dead, more consumers are likely to make the switch to high definition, and the PS3 is as good a first Blu-ray player as anything. Tufegdzic conceded:
“People may buy the PS3 not only for their gaming needs, but for video as well, which gives the PS3 a unique competitive edge over the Wii and Xbox 360 well into the longer term.”
The Wii may still be selling in huge quantities today, but it seems analysts are predicting the market is gearing up for a PS3 future, and I have to say, at this point I agree with them.

It’s not going to happen in 2008.
The only thing helping sales of the PS3 in 2008 is the lack of supply for the wii. There may be a month or two where PS3 will outsell the wii, but in general the wii will have the greatest sales this year. It may turn around sometime, but even after the PS3 outsells the wii for a month or two, it will take a long time to catch up. 2010 is more realistic.

what a load of rubbish. i bought a wii because all the games on ps3 are out on wii too and cheaper. so what the graphics are better on ps3. get a 360, its the same graphics but cheaper.
gran turismo is for fans only, and honestly it really is a bit crappy. OOh another corner to go around carefully. ooh super i can crash at full speed and not leave a scratch! no damage on this one.
keeping my wii – with blockbuster smash hits like mariokart, wii fit, no more heroes and disaster: day of crisis – coming out in the next few months on top of the already released great games like mario galaxy, guitar hero 3, batallion wars 2, zack and wiki, excite truck, elebits, wii sports, resident evil 4 and resident evil umbrella chronicles: I will hardly have a moment of free time! never mind thinking about wasting money on a chunky pointless bluray plyer (have you not heard you can download HDmovies for $6! on xboxlive)
we buy a console to last a few many years… not just a season.
Wii will continue to outsell ps3 4-1 (if not more) for the rest of the year as they have done so far this year.

load of crap, analysts predicted the PSP would outsell the DS – Wrong. Also predicted the Wii would fail – Wrong. Nothing they predict is ever right as no-one knows what people will buy until they buy it.

@ frogger.
Chill out. The Wii is a party machine, nothing more in my opinion and experience. And as for your HDmovies for $6 on xbox live… Okay, AND… the video quality sucks compared to blu-ray and the now out-mode HD-DVD. 720p or 1080i/p at DVD bit rates blows, and where are the extra features and 7.1 uncompressed HD audio on live downloads??? And what happens when your xbox dies, has to get replaced or live account gets corrupted (Which happens)? Or would if you upgrade your system… Do you get to re-download your movies on your new system or do you have to go through a cumbersome “transfer kit”? So give it a rest. Unless if you have some sort of visual handicap, an HDDVD or Blu-Ray player isn’t pointless if your viewing on a decent HDTV.
Guitar Hero 3 is better on 360 and PS3, it’s called online play and yes, graphics and I’m not even going to mention Rock Band, which CAN’T be played on the Wii. I played RE 4 on my game cube, liked it better there. The games you listed don’t appeal to me except for Wii Sports, Metroid 3 was pretty good too. Umbrella chronicles sucked big time, enjoyed playing time crisis better with the guncon.
I like my Wii but Cooking Mama??? What a joke. I am buyin Bully, as I didn’t get a chance to play it on the PS2. manhunt 2 was OK on Wii, but had a better time playing it on my PSP.
Again, different strokes for different folks. Either way, in my opinion (which many differ with) the Wii isn’t a standalone system, especially for the hardcore gamer. Everyone I know has a Wii AND and a 360 or PS3… why… dunno maybe they should make a survey to answer that question…. just my 2¢

yawn…………….another ps3 fanboy article…….keep feeding your egos…….if all was true none of these articles would be necessary…..its just another marketing gimmick.

The most funniest thing is Xbots trying to convince everyone including themselves that a game is not great. Everyone, every review site, journalist, blogger, gamer, talks about how great Gran Turismo is, and some lame Xbot in his limited Xbot wisdom deems Gran Turismo to be ‘crappy’ much like their beloved craptacular 360, which they can’t even deny.
Ahh, the Burned HD-DVD Xbot, turns to digital download as the true next gen format, isn’t this a pitiful story we have seen many times, over and over again? It’s truly sad, when a human being is reduced to this state of denial.
Clutch onto your Xbot dreams, we understand you bought the trash, and have no money so you have to make justifications as to why PS3 is not so good… ahhh we are empathetic of your plight.

Isn’t it funny – two years of PS3 bashing. It starts improving, gets HD domination, see’s large sales increases, and starts to see wbe media acceptance, and the poor Wii and X360 fans come out to say its all wrong.
The PS2 is still selling as many PS3’s in US (check last NPD stats) While this is the case, PS3 sales will increase slowly as PS2 owners upgrade… theres over 100 million to move over.. so all you Wii and X360 fans, this is only the initial start of the PS3 sales.

As someone who owns -none- of the next-gen consoles, I think its all a bit of a laugh, people getting defensive/offensive of their chosen brand.
All three will continue to co-exist, worthwhile games will continue to be made for each. Whats to get shirty about?
Competition is a good thing, be happy consumers.

The great games on the ps3 are all hardcore tho, the mass market is casual gamers, i think the gaming world needs to get real and accept this. The psp couldnt do it to the DS and so why does the PS3 have a chance against the Wii.
Also the Wii is a serious console, i consider myself a hardcore gamer and it has much more to interest me on Wii than the Ps3. Brawl on its own will keep me more than busy for at least 6 months…

I like nintendo but wii is not the way to go if you want a long hour of gameplay just pick a nintendo DS or the next gen console instead the ps3 or a 360, i got a ps3 and hell i played it for about 26 hrs a week, but my 360 breaks down last month then just soled it on ebay not really recommended for people that get pissed easily if their system gets broken..no offense but to be honest it sucks being a 360 fanboy when you got an RROD..(well i’m not just saying if i where)

@moustachio
I couldn’t agree more…

Because the monotamous blasting in Halo or Resistance is so much more hardcore than a real challenge like Metroid………..anyway….

I have a Wii, and I most likely will be buying a PS3 either this year or next (depending on irrelevant personal stuff). So far, I think these analysts are right on the money. I’ll be buying the PS3 not because I’m tired of the Wii, but because the two consoles offer such different experiences, each with its own strengths (the PS3 and Xbox360, on the other hand, offer much the same experience, and Xbox domination over PS3 so far is solely a matter of better games out, which will change with time).
But this doesn’t mean Wii is going to lose the so called console war. Wii isn’t really playing this game.
Let’s assume 2009 will be the year PS3 takes over the bulk of the sales. By 2010, Nintendo will probably be able to come out with Wii2, housing technology just as good or better than the PS3 at the same price the original Wii came out in, and Wii(2) sales will pick up again, ousting the PS3 from its dominant place. Since the Wii was so cheap to begin with, Wii owners are unlikely to think too much about spending 250 dollars once every three years (as opposed to spending 600 dollars if Sony tries to push PS4 anytime before, oh, at least 2014, which they won’t).
It’s a whole other strategy and a whole other game. Wii is there for short bursts, and the hope of the PS3 to be there for a long haul may be dashed by this strategy.

What is an Xbot? Is that meant to be some kind of insult?

I love how the wii is using the ps3/xbox 360 as toilet paper and all the fan boys are coming out with new excuses every few months. First the Wii was a fad. Almost 2 years after release it’s selling hotter than before. Then it was that nintendo is purposely creating a shortage to keep demand high. one of the most perposterous excuses that i’ve ever heard. Look at the companies, Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo. Which do you think has the least manufacturing facilities. Then it was that there aren’t any good games on the wii. Another ridiculous statement since I’ve had the wii for 3 or 4 months and have like 12 games with only one that i slightly regret buying but was on sale so no biggie Guilty Gear. Games take years to make, good ones at least, it takes about 3 years to make a zelda game. no one expected the wii to sell so strongly, not even nintendo. So that’s why we’ve gotten so many bad ps2 ports since that was the quickest way to get games out. But now we getting more 3rd party “hardcore” titles like Madworld, Conduit, Force Unleashed, Monster Hunter, Tenchu, and Sadness (I don’t care what anyone thinks, this game does exist and will be coming out). We also have “hardcore” games like Fatal Frame, Disaster Day of Crisis, and Project H.A.M.M.E.R.(another game that ppl don’t believe is coming out but is coming out). Now ppl are saying that they are going to buy a wii and one of the other consoles. This is a load of garbage. Most ppl I know only bought a PS3 for the blu ray functionality and with blu ray player coming down I think more ppl will be selling off their ps3’s or just having it collect dust.
