Xbox 360 to be cheaper than Wii on March 14

March 5, 2008

equal If rumors around a Xbox 360 price cut become true, then on March 14, the Xbox 360 will be approaching price territory of the Wii.

On March 14, Europe will see a price cut of €50 on the Xbox 360.  The price cut is due for both models of the Xbox 360.  The Elite system will cost in the area of £240 (~$476) and the Arcade System will cost £150 (~$297).

According to TechRadar, this means that at least for the UK, the Xbox 360 Arcade system will cost less than the Nintendo Wii.  Which is a good thing; perhaps this is the push Microsoft needs to overtake the Wii.

But, use of the Xbox 360 Arcade system is rather limited; most users will want the unit with the hard drive.

A GameStation manager was quoted as saying,

“We are currently selling the Elite plus one game at £330, the Premium system with any game at £280 or £260 with FIFA Street or Assassin’s Creed and the Arcade version for £230 with any game or £220 with FIFA Street.

Those prices will be lowered when/if the price cut hits.  There’s also the question of what’s going to be next.  Could Microsoft be planning a revision to the Xbox 360?  Maybe it’s planning to release a “slim” Xbox 360 or one with major revisions; similar to what Sony is planning for the PS3.

I cannot wait for this price drop. I have waited for 1 year to buy a xbox. I saw a good deal on bsg but did not buy it yet. When this price drop happen it may eb the right time.

Are these the same sources that said the Blu Ray drive for the 360 is happening soon?

  3. coldfusion:

Sweet sweet news, certainly paid off for all the people who have waited for their xbox like myself.

Blu-ray be the icing on the cake for me :-)

  4. G. Ames:

Looking forward to picking it up soon to check out the capabilities

    @ coldfusion

If you are expecting a Blu Ray add on for the 360 don’t hold your breath, It will most likely not happen.

I suspect MS will push digital downloads over physical media. Which is a mistake in my opinion as there are no where near enough people with super high speed internet to make a profit.

If MS wants to continue with the idea the their xbox is more than just a game machine and also a multimedia device, they need to adopt Blu Ray, but I doubt it.

  6. wii fan:

well, personally, cheaper doesn’t mean better. They will only sell to the people who have wanted to buy an xbox and waiting for the price cut. They probably won’t get into the wii market.

  7. Serious:

There has been too many rumors re a Blu Ray drive for 360 for it not to be true.

Microsoft stated itself that if the consumer want one, they will make one. They obviously don’t have their heads in the sand, they have heard the consumer and the consumer wants a blu ray drive. It makes perfect sense.

You can sit here and say that it is unlikely, and that’s your opinion and I’ll try to respect that, but I disagree with you.

It will definitely sell a lot more and a lot faster than the HD DVD drive because now consumers aren’t going to be risking their money on a dead HD movie system.

Anyway, why are PS3 owners so against the 360 having a Blu Ray drive anyway? Are really feeling THAT threatened about it? Why are you feeling threatened? It’s not like 360 is taking anything away from PS3.
