Jack Thompson up to sneaky business with EA, Take 2 and Grand Theft Auto
Jack Thompson is doing just about everything to get his mug into the gaming spotlight — his motives are definitely in question. His latest move was to offer to assist EA in taking over Take 2 Studios, the company responsible for the hit series Grand Theft Auto.
His last escapade involved blaming the recent school shooting tragedy at Northern Illinois University on the oldie-but-a-goodie first-person shooter Counter-Strike. He was highly criticized by the gaming community for redirecting a blame to video games that should have been put on the shooter’s mental disorder.
Which, rightfully, should leave people wondering exactly why Jack Thompson, the loudest mouth for the anti-gaming platform is offering to help EA acquire the franchise that is known for being one of the most controversial games on the market to date. For the record, Take 2 declined the buyout from EA (thankfully), and EA actually declined Thompson’s offer, with Mariam Sughayer saying, “In response to your offer to assist in the proposed acquisition of Take-Two, we would strongly prefer that you not get involved in this matter,” according to Joystiq.
Not only that, Sughayer goes on say that Thompson has actually incorrectly referenced content in EA games — most likely during one part of his anti-gaming witch-hunt — and essentially that EA doesn’t want anything to do with the man.
All of this raises the question: with Thompson’s known history as an anti-gaming advocate, coupled with the blatant controversy surrounding the content in Grand Theft Auto, what on earth could Thompson’s motive be?
Perhaps someone should send him to a shrink and see about getting him on some pills — we wouldn’t want him playing any violent video games like Grand Theft Auto and doing anything foolish in an EA/Take 2 conference, now would we?
