Sony claims PS3 showcases games better than Xbox 360
Surprise surprise I know, but that doesn’t mean what Sony says is necessarily true. In a nutshell, Sony is claiming that third party developers are increasingly looking to the Playstation 3 as the format of choice, with Xbox 360 being a machine only suitable for ports.
Multi-format releases and console to console ports, and the quality of these translations have been a cause for some debate recently, with Gamepro declaring that PS3 releases are superior to their Xbox 360 counterparts. Microsoft then countered the article by claiming that the Xbox 360 still has the best games.
Now, Sony, via Vice President of product marketing at SCEA, Scott Steinberg, has claimed in an interview with Next-Gen.biz that the PS3 is increasingly the choice of games developers to showcase their games, with the Xbox 360 a definite second choice. He told them:
“Third parties have started to move from the de facto 360 SDK. Of course people designed their next-gen games on it because that was the only one there. The PS3 shipped and so they said, ‘let’s port our 360 games to the PS3.’”
“But now companies are recognizing that ‘hey, if I start on the PS3 and then port down to the 360, my 360 game is going to look better than if I had just designed it for the 360.’ So the pendulum is swinging.”
“The heads of development are thinking ‘what’s going to show off my next-gen game that much better?’ It is to lead with the PS3 and then to port to the 360.”
Steinberg may have a point, though it would be argued against quite vociferously by fans of the Microsoft Xbox 360, who won’t want to see their machine being labelled as the ugly, unwanted, older sister of the PS3.
The Playstation 3 is more powerful in terms of sheer processing power, but it takes a lot more than that for a console to become the leading development platform. Of ultra importance are the development tools, and we already know that some games companies have argued that the PS3 dev kit is too complicated to get the best out of the platform.
At this point, I would say that developers are actually getting the best out of the Xbox 360, while Playstation 3 games could and should be having more work done on them. In the near future however, as developers really start to get to grips with the PS3, the games could start living up to the potential of the hardware, and Steinberg would be proven right.

I’m going to go out on a limb here, maybe cross the fanboy aisle for a second. First, I think there’s alot of sense in what Steinberg is saying (if you remove all of his bias)…the PS3 has more raw processing power, this is true. However, I have to give the nod to the 360’s GPU for being slightly better in certain areas. So, while I’m not taking anything away from the 360 when I say this, I think that if developers start on the PS3 while working towards being more fluent in multi-core coding, it will only benefit the 360 in the end (As it is also a multi-core…but not as many). Take, for example, what the devs from Force Unleashed said…had they started on the PS3 first, they would most likely have gotten a heck of alot more out of the physics engine…but since they didn’t have the kits for the PS3 by then, they had to start on the 360.

It’s about time that PS3 games start showing their full potential. They need to break this habit of PS2 vs. Xbox into the next generation of consoles! This is Playstation 3! And this is Xbox 360! Leave the past behind. If you can go in for the kill, THEN DO IT ALREADY!!!

I’m sure there is way more potential for both consoles, yes 360 too, let’s just hope it won’t overheat as much when that potential is unlocked. About that conclusion of ps3 ports looking better, that just bolox! However i’m sure they just as good as 360 counterpart.

i’m just wondering why only sony employees are the ones hyping the ps3’s graphics and top of why the ps3’s power and graphics are always in predictions of what the future holds. Hype kiddies. It’s just hilarious the author actually wrote an article on this tripe. The 30fps of Madden on the ps3 vs the 60fps of Madden on the 360 should be an indicator of what’s to come.

Funny how Sony fans always look to the future, and never at the present.
If I want the best games at this point in time, I’d go for the Xbox 360.
If you want to buy a PS3, twiddle your thumbs, and tell people off for not getting the same console as you – then I think that’s the only way you’re going to get satisfaction from the decision you’ve made.

@kevin did you even read the fncking article? they just said the ps3 dev kit wasn’t out yet, so 360 to ps3 ports were crap. read the fncking article before you post your opinion jackass. the new ea ncaa game will run 60fps on ps3 due to ea just finding out what needs to happen. and you mention a near launch game. ok how about this. how many people still play perfect dark? how many people still play resistance? none and alot are the answers. guess which system had the better launch. the psfncking3,that’s who.and i’ll hype the ps3’s graphics,look at the trailers for 8days later and heavy rain. 360 can’t do that or heavy rain would be coming to the 360 because it’s not a first partly game. go back to school, the adults are talking

I think the cost of developing on the PS3 was holding people back too, but that has changed recently. With dev hardware price drops and the announcement of the FREE PhyreEngine from Sony which supports cross platform compiling and is meant to be much easier to use, it really is becoming the development platform of choice. With any luck this will benefit both Xbox 360 and PS3 camps, and help put a stop to poor and rushed ports.

I think the X bot fanboys should just wait untill july or august, and then try and put a case forward for why 360 is a better console. They wont be able to. At this moment in time their clutching at what ever straws they have left, and its starting to get repetitive and boring. Yes we know madden has 60fps and yes we know live is pretty good, and u do have a good selection of games, but so u should cos your damn consoles been out for over 2 years. you poor poor sony fanboys(nate). I will have to admit that the ps3 has great games on it, all 2, or at tops 3 of them. when the ps3 finally gets good games i might think about buying one. But for right now you would have to be blind not to see what the better system is right now. good luck in all your waiting for a really good system seller to come about. because as of right now the only reason people even buy a ps3 is because of its name….Period

ok im not going to get technical…but ps3 has better graphical capabilities because of the blue-ray 1080p support….you just cant go better than blue ray…yes Xbox 360 has better online and it always has…but PS3’s is free and could become better. The main reason i got myself a PS3 id because i have been a metal gear solid fan since the beginning and i can’t wait until MGS4 comes out…and btw it has been announced that it will not go multi-platform.

Ok im not all there with what is better, but in my opinion i think the ps3 is hell of alot better, i mean think about it, you got a blu-ray built into a ps3, thats over 1k dollar value if u were to get a blu-ray by itself, ps3 can play games online for free!, why the fuck would u get internet and pay for xbox live, give me a fkn break, not only that but batteries in a fucking controler LOL, xbox needs batteries to have there controlers work LOL old news ppl! ya xbox360 graphics are good and smooth n what not, but ps3 has more potential and most of sony products are compatible with anything like there cameras n other stuff, try using ur ps3 charger on a sony camera to upload photos on ur computer, can xbox360 do that? Man if that makes any sense, You’ve sold me on a ps3. You mean you can use your ps3 charger to upload pictures from your camera to your computer!!! Holy crap thats gotta be the best feature ive heard out of that system!!! Its a standard usb chord, jackass. You did hit the nail in the coffin though with your statement of 360 graphics are good and smooth though. Oh and as far as the batteries go, Your controller has a battery in it as well. The difference is i can replace mine if it goes bad. on the ps3 you have to send it back in for a replacement (thats what i would want to do) if its under warrenty still. Orrrr go buy a new one. Think before you speak. even i can say someone like you gives ps3 fanboys a bad name.

Hopeless, I hate this stoopid argument BUT I must point something out. I am sorry, but I owned a 360 and ended up selling it for the PS3. The 360 kept having this problem known as “the red ring of death” where the light on the console went red and I could not turn the unit back on. Sent it back twice to be honest. Don’t get me wrong but these consoles are expensive, LIVE was awesome but you shouldn’t have to pay to play online after spending doe on a console. 360 Graphics are fcuking tight ! I won’t argue that either but after playing the PS3 and seeing it’s capability, I have to be honest with myself and say the PS3 is a much better unit. Blue-Ray holds more, that is why Unreal Tournament 3 on PS3 has more content than the 360 version and looks far superiors than the 360 version (Google it if you thing I’m lying). The PS3 just seemed to be far better value for money and graphics are equal to the 360 but I feel they will exceed the 360 graphics in the near future. A good example of graphic comparison was Dark Sector. I have played them on both consoles and have to admit the PS3 version actually looked surprisingly far better than the 360 version. Just my input, not bagging 360, I think it’s awesome and did own one, but due to the massive console issues I experienced, will never go back to XBOX. Also the 360 is extremely noisy when it starts heating up!

to be honest they both have the same graphics with only slight differences that you dont even notice on the ps3. Blu ray is pointless at the moment because no one wants to go out and spend £25 on a blu ray dvd that they have on standard dvd. I have a 360 myself but if i got a family console i would get a ps3.

It’s not just about the graphics it’s the power behind it, the 360’s processor is absolutely no match for the Cell. Check up on it if you think I’m exaggerating. Oh, and I kinda take back my statement about 360 and PS3 being the same, obviously there utilizing the PS3 more efficiently now, hence , PS3 is getting “Crysis” as an exclusive.

Interestingly enough, the Xbox 360 won’t be receiving it because of “technical reasons”.
Blu-ray is not pointless either considering it’s out-selling HD-DVD 3 to 1.
PS2 and XBOX were different, the XBOX demolished PS2 no argument there but as time goes on, it’s quite obvious that between these 2 next-gen monsters, the PS3 is the better option.

read my comment previous to it bud before posting, i actually did say I like the 360 ! and did own one but they have had far to many problems. As for your statistics, there all a load of made up rubbish. you said kids at your school have xbox360’s and not PS3’s right? So if your at school, I doubt you would know technical details about graphics. Your statement about XBOX360 getting blu-ray, very true, but read up before you post as the blu-ray for 360 wil not have gaming capability, only for movies, and yes, you have to pay extra for the blu-ray, it’s included on the PS3. 360 owners pay to play online, PS3 owners it’s free. However I will state that 360’s “Live” is far better than Playstation’s network, no denying it however once “Home” is released on PS3 this,once again, may change things. So back to what I said previously, the 360 is a great console, HALO was great fun as was Gears of War but to me, buying a console based on 2 games was not worth it, especially when the first 2 360’s I owned gave me the “Red Ring of Death” as I mentioned in my earlier post. This has nothing to do with being a fanboy, I owned XBOX and then XBOX360 Arcade (x2) but Microsoft just seemed to rush such a great oppurtunity to take over the console market like they did against PS2. This time (in my opinion) the PS3 has just exceled.
