PS3 firmware update v2.17 released - no in-game XMB - who cares?
By Danny Mendez
No! Unfrotunately, it’s not that one, but Sony released a PS3 firmware update. Grab it while it’s hot, though you wouldn’t be missing much if you didn’t.
The firmware update version is set at a messy 2.17, but are you curious as to what it does? Are you sitting on the edge of your seat to find out? If you aren’t, good because all it does is simply improve the "operating stability" of some online games, according to the official Playstation blog.
The long-rumored (but seemingly vaporware-like) update many PS3 owners have been hoping for will add the possibility of in-game XMB. Unfortunately for them, this update is not the one.
It baffles us. Sony must know the web has been talking about in-game XMB for ages now, and several fans are pleading Sony to bless us with the feature. With every firmware update released, fans are only dissapointed again, but then again, why is in-game XMB such a big deal?
To be honest, we can’t figure out why we’ve bought into the hype. The XMB works well enough while not in-game, and we can’t imagine why we’d need it so urgently during a game. It’s nice, but honestly, what’s the big deal?

This was the first update that only took me 6 mins to DL and Install. I’m glad the updates have ceased their “every month” requirements.

With all the connection issues experienced the main thing for me with in-game XMB is the ability to send messages to friends without having to quit the game first. Having your own sound track is a nice + aswell…
March 14th, 2008
Don’t forget DTS HD MA decoding. I think this is the most anticipated feature. I personally am ready to purchase a stand alone Blu Ray player to get this feature.
March 14th, 2008
Why is in-game XMB so important? Are you retarded?
March 14th, 2008
Umm hmm maybe to better communicate with friends online without quiting and leaving a game. or to be able to actually find friend online and jump in a match with them. Some people like to Listen to music while playing there games. If the Power of the CELL is what sony says it is. These Features should be no problem to pull off. This feature should really be a top prioity for Sony.
March 14th, 2008
Are you kidding? The in game xmb would allow us to chat, see who’s in what, (instead of just that ‘message’ that your pal is online) and let you connect with your friends without saving up, closing a game, looking on the bar, sending a chat mail and hopeing they read it before you die of waiting. it could all be done as you play! That’s great! with vid-chat you could also talk while you’ve paused the game of choice. At least, that’s what I’m hopeing for
.. This is nearly as cool for me as in game custom music.. That had better be coming soon, too!
March 14th, 2008
In-game chat is what would be cool. I don’t think there’s a need for too much beyond that.

XMB is no big deal,i rather have them fix the issues on the games than XMB crap.

I dont care
I really dont want it
Give all system resources (cell and memory) to the game.
Why should be a running process eating resources that could be given to the game for better graphics or better a.i.?
Why limit every single game, with something that not all will benefit (not everyone conect the ps3 to internet, a lot less play games always conected to internet)
Its a little win for a few and a great lose to everyone

This just gives Sony fans another reason to not even consider buying a PS4! (whenever the hell that comes out) And not only that, it just gives Sony a bad name, and a bad reputation. Pissing off your fans is the tard way to do things.
Woo way to go Sony! Another display of your tardness in the gaming industry! Woo hoo!!!

In game music. That’s ALL I’ve been waiting for. The XBOX had it in 2001, It baffles me why the PS3 doesn’t. If you wondering why I want an in-game XMB, it’s so I can listen to my own music in GT5.

Wow, future of sega.
You are such a lame gamer. Sony isnt releasing a new hardware every year like sega did, (genisis, 32x, sega cd.) I dont mind waiting for sony’s sh*t cause they seem to make devices that are “high quality” and dont fail. Do i need to remind you of their less than 1% breakdown rate with PS3?
You i can tell are not a sony fan, so dont speak on our behalf. Thanks

we need it 4 sending messeges u noob hoe

pfftt….
March 15th, 2008
Brad, the only things that are lame is that crap Playstation 3 of yours, all all of you pathetic fans who support it! Don’t you realize that Sony is a cheapskate company!?
And for your behalf, I AM a Sony fan. I happen to own almost 30 PS3 games so far, how about you??? Hmmm……I think not. So I guess I’m the bigger Sony fan, thank you.
And I also own a 360. To be honest, I enjoy playing the PS3 more than the 360……But I’m just sick of Sony screwing around instead of going for the kill on Microsoft! I like them both, but Sony has the advantage, and they won’t take it!
They are waaaaaaay too cocky and sooner or later, their plans will backfire on them. Microsoft already cut the price down of the premium 360 to almost half the price of PS3! Not to mention, but the 360 controllers have RUMBLE!!!……Something the PS3 considers a gimmick.
And not only that, but Nintendo Wii STILL, for the blood of reindeers, has the highest sales over the PS3 and 360!
Now for Microsoft, I am appalled that they would allow Nintendo to outsell them! But Sony!???? Ha, they don’t even deserve to be in gaming business if they keep this act up.
Blue Ray my ass! If Metal Gear Solid 4 doesn’t get a 9.5 or higher, you can kiss Sony goodbye. Microsoft and Nintendo will take over, and the legend Sony will be just a shrouded memory.
March 16th, 2008
hey, The Future of Sega.
the way sounded. you really don’t own a ps3 nor a 360.
i believe you own a dreamcast machine and 30 dreamcast games. LOL!

[...] a reason why Sony won’t release a PS3 firmware update to add in-game XMB to the PS3: the addition would mean the end of humanity, or maybe the company’s just waiting [...]
March 17th, 2008
Hey Tiko, ha ha…………no. Not funny. I own every single console machine that has EVER came out! And yes, Dreamcast, Sega is my all time favorite! And when Dreamcast 2 comes out, Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, kiss your ass goodbye because Sega is taking over!!!! Yeah baby!!!!!
…Oh and by the way, I only own 4 Dreamcast games….It still kicks ass!

Just a question: for those of you that want to listen to music while playing a game, what’s stopping you from using an external source like (gasp!) a home stereo system? It achieves the same thing and you don’t have to transfer any of your music to the ps3…
also, lots of games allow you to turn down/off the music allowing you to keep the sound effects. add an external source and you’re golden. everything doesn’t have to integrate into everything else. My music doesn’t need to be on my ipod, computer, car system, Xbox 360, PS3, HTPC, etc etc… I don’t need a camera on everything and I don’t need everything to have a touchscreen/touchbuttons. One day, we’re just going to have one device that does everything and has all of our information on it and it’ll be in our brain… probably.
March 17th, 2008
when they pop it out, it will be great and refined unlike ms sony will release something when its done, not rushed to beat the competition to the market. just sit back and watch the incredible roll sony is going on right now. this was the official first update of the year. things will only get better for the consumer #1_in_the_hood_G!!
March 17th, 2008
it’s odd that something so easily done on the 360 is giving the ps3 and sony such a hard time. oh well…maybe next version update..or the one after that…or maybe the one after that…
March 20th, 2008
I want custom music integrated because, my ps3, sky+, and cd player all connect to the same amp and speakers. Only one device can be outputted at once. Is it really that much to ask.
March 26th, 2008
are you dumb really, the in game xmb would give games so much more flexibility, i hate it when i have to leave a game to read mneassages or talk to a mate. And i hate that i cant play my own effing music yet. I bought the ps3 thinking it could, its a fekin shame it cant though. IT best be in the next update. Whoever wrote the article is a tard. I hate the music in burnout paradise too, it sucks.
March 26th, 2008
im bak, danny mendez, youre a fool, using external sources isn’t cool, it sucks, and external sources means pausing going to the source and changing the music, or using a remote. I’d rather just use the controller, itd be way quicker and easier.
