Major announcements for Wii and PS3 at E3 2008 - What, no Xbox?
By Dave Parrack
The E3 Media and Business Summit, formerly known as the Electronic Entertainment Expo is a key date in the calendar for all gamers keen to see what is coming soon in the industry. E3 2008 is already shaping up to be a big one, with Sony and Nintendo both rumoured to be making big announcements.
This year is shaping up to be a very important one in the battle for console supremacy in the gaming industry, so all of the three manufacturers are sure to be keen to make big announcements to gain publicity and new adopters of their console. So it’s no surprise that E3 will be a key battleground of this intense marketing campaign.
It’s started early though, with both Nintendo and Sony already hinting at major announcements at this year’s conference.
Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has given an interview to GameTrailers where he promises the first sightings of a major new release on the Wii will be seen at E3 2008.
Speculation as to what the title could be has begun in earnest on Internet forums all across the Web, which was surely Fils-Aime’s hope. So let’s add to that by guessing ourselves.
It’s likely to be either a big name franchise being exhumed from the grave, so a new Donkey Kong, Kid Icarus or Starfox game could be on the cards. Or it could be a new game to take full advantage of the Wii control system, so something like the long rumoured Wii Music/Orchestra.
Meanwhile, according to PS3 Center, Sony are also planning to make a big announcement at the E3, although the story doesn’t seem to have much grounding in fact: it’s just one of those “according to sources” type stories which have to be taken with a pinch of salt.
Having said that, there is the possibility of Killzone 2, God of War 3 or PlayStation Home being unveiled at the July event.
I fully expect Microsoft to also start hinting at a major announcement or two for E3. They certainly need to pull something out of the bag to stop the complete drop in hardware sales momentum over recent months.
