Competition for PS3, Wii, Xbox? – Acer to make games console

March 18, 2008

Competition for PS3, Wii, Xbox? - Acer to make games consoleThe chances are that at this stage of the current generation console war, you have taken the plunge, and bought at least one of the three consoles on offer, either the Sony PS3, Microsoft Xbox 360, or the Nintendo Wii. Cue a new contender, in the form of PC manufacturer Acer!

Stop laughing at the back. I know how ridiculous it sounds but even at this stage of proceedings, there’s still a company out there who think they can compete with the might and wallet power of the big three.

It’s actually quite an interesting concept which Acer are proposing, that of an open source PC-based games machine to rival the Wii, Playstation 3, and Xbox 360. They might not have a chance of succeeding, and this is still at the ideas stage, but we can at least consider the possibility of it happening.

The rumour came about at an Acer press conference last week, but is only now seeming to filter out to the gaming sites. At the event, Acer’s senior vice president, James T. Wong, was interviewed by BetaNews, where he dropped the nugget:

“The company has a game machine in mind, and it will be based on open standards.”

“If you look at most of the other game machines that are out there right now — Nintendo’s, the Xbox — they are ‘closed’ and proprietary systems.”

So does this stand a chance of ever happening? And if it does, what are it’s chances of success?

I doubt very much whether this idea will ever get off the ideas table and on to shop shelves. If the company looked at what they are up against, they will surely baulk at the idea of spending time and money on a piece of hardware which has absolutely no chance of overcoming the opposition, or even selling in large enough quantities to make any profit.

That’s not to say the idea of an open standard games machine is a bad one, it would just be almost impossible to achieve.

Add to that the fact that Acer would need to make money on the hardware, as they wouldn’t be making any money on the games, and we hit another problem.

Nice idea Acer, and one which has got you some good publicity over the last 24 hours, but I can’t see this machine ever coming to fruition. It would just be a waste of yours and our time and energy.

Stick to laptops.

At least it would do better than Microsoft in terms of less hardware-failure rate. I’ve used Acer–they’re hardware is top notch, not to mention long-lasting products.

Another thing–an opinion is an opinion, but you sound like a know-it-all. There’s room for improvement in making this sound like an opinion. Hey, if Acer does succeed, you don’t want to have humble pie shoved down your throat, do you?

  3. Rebma Boss:

As if Acer didn’t know what it was doing…as if you know more about computers/hardware/technology than Acer, a top hardware making company…

I’d buy one.Open standard gaming…that’s all the features I need.

if they plan on developing a system with high specs that can play the pc version of games, this intrigues me. except to say that it runs the chance of becoming obsolete rather quickly as pc’s change and improve quickly, one would expect the requirements of some pc games to jump as well. the upside would be the cost of these pc games being half what most console games cost. this is more than likely only some pr for acer but we will wait and see i guess.

Well fail or succeed i welcome Acer to bring a fourth gaming console i know video game developers want more gaming console to make more money from their games. I know it will have better hardware than Xbox 360 for sure more reliable. OMG i’m excite to hear more news regarding this new console idea. I’ll buy it and put it next to all my PlayStations and Xbox. I hope it happens please god let this idea come to life.

Good idea. I heard that many big game producers such as EA dont like to pay the fee fore games thay release on the consoles. So thats speaks fore Acer.
