Sony PS3 2.2 update available but lacks PSP "portable copy"

By Jonathan Schlaffer

Sony PS3 2.2 update available but without PSP Sony has unleashed firmware version 2.20 for its PS3 console.  It has arrived mostly as expected but is lacking one feature that many were predicting it could/should have had.

Sure, it includes the ability to play Divx content that is over 2GB with subtitle playback and a limited ability to “resume play” DVDs and Blu-Ray discs; though according to Product Reviews that feature is not supported on all discs.

It has BD Profile 2.0 for the PS3 which lets you fetch related content for the movie you are watching via the Internet; not all discs have that feature.  It is still a welcome improvement.

PCWorld (among others) had been predicting that the version 2.2 PS3 firmware would have support for “Portable Copy.”  This was a rumored feature that would allow the PS3 to copy a standard def version of a Blu-Ray movie directly to the PSP.  It’s been confirmed that this feature is not included with the updated firmware.

It does have the ability to copy content from playlists on the PS3 to your PSP; well, I suppose that’s better than nothing.  The update is worth it as it is but to push it to “awesome” status, Sony would have had to include the “Portable Copy” feature.

At least it was a quick DL and Install.

    2. kevin:

wow..so sony fails to live up to their promises again? wish i could say i was suprised.

    3. Moustachio:

@ Kevin, Sony never promised or mentioned this feature in 2.20, it was a rumour started by PC world, Within hours of the rumour being posted it was refuted by a sony rep.

Isn’t it interesting that people who say sony lies don’t realize that sony never said this in the first place, It’s ok Kevin, I’ll leave you with your arrogant stupidity and blatant ignorance, you seem content with living in your fantasy world, but for me, I knew it wasn’t coming because it wasn’t included in the list Sony posted on the blog last week.

KEVIN, YOU ARE A MORON AND SHOULD GO PLAY IN TRAFFIC.

wow..so Kevin and other xbots take rumours as truth? wish I could say I was suprised.

OH and one last thing: PWNED

Agreed. NOWHERE did Sony ever say portable copy was coming in 2.20. Just like the whiner’s about “in-game XMB” and “DTS-HD MA” can continue to cry that this update sucks because their feature du jour isn’t in this update.

Sony gives us features when they are ready, and fully tested. Could Sony give us a roadmap of future features? Sure, but then there would just be more whining on blogs.

Be HAPPY they threw in the unannounced subtitle support in divx files, get off the blogs, and play!

(Cue the additional whining now that HD-DVD had the equivalent of BD-Live long ago now)

This update is GREAT! Thanks Sony.

moustachio - if you say so. it’s funny when sony makes a promise you idiots froth at the mouth, then when the fail to live up to it,it’s “sony never said that”. could your head be farther up sony’s ass? really… idiot. face it; you got pwned by sony’s broken promises. tha’ts the only “pwnage” here, clown.

    6. Moustachio:

uhhh, kevin, where did sony say it? come on, i’m waiting…………… sorry kevin, but you have been pwned, but good job proving my theory regarding your lack of intelligence though, maybe if you reply again you can make yourself look like even more of an idiot, go ahead try…. your ignorance is giving me a good laugh
