Playstation Store security breached; some user info compromised
If you are a Playstation user who participates in the Playstation Network, you might want to check your email accounts, voicemail or whatever other communication methods you use; Sony believes that some user information could have been stolen, and if you’re one of them, you’ll either hear about it or not be able to login.
According to Joystiq, Sony has admitted that security for the Playstation Store was bypassed, and user information has been compromised in “small” percentages. In that information that could be compromised is user account passwords, any additional user info, and — you guess it — credit card information.
Sony believes it is unlikely that credit card information is stored, but it’s pretty easy to put the pieces together — if user passwords were stolen, then all the information for someone’s account was compromised.
If you’re in the select few who were unfortunate enough to have your information snatched, you will be contacted by Sony. Another really fast way to find out whether it was stolen or not would be to attempt a login — if you’re unable to do so, you’ll probably be wanting to cancel whatever credit cards you have attached to your account.
Before all the fanboys start flaming in the comments, its worth noting that, even though Sony’s Playstation Network is free, Microsoft’s Xbox Live has had problems recently with account information being stolen. That isn’t even mentioning that huge outage that occurred in December and January where users were having trouble playing the two most popular games on Live, Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4. How ’bout dem apples?

Yeah dude. Xbox Live costs $100,000 (roughly) a year, has daily outages, sucks, and is run on orphan tears.
While the PSN has numerous advatages. I don’t even need to list them they’re so obvious! I mean, there’s always the FACT that every time you log on to PSN, an angel gets its wings.
amirite, Triston?

Oh yeah, also, just want to say how the proven indisputable fact that Rainbow Six Vegas 2 is working fine on Xbox Live while not working at all on PSN is a VILE VICIOUS TRUTH. Anyone who mentions it is evil.

“Notice to PLAYSTATION®Network Users
We have found out that there has been a possibility of unauthorized access to personal information on the PLAYSTATION®Store through PCs, a content download service of the PLAYSTATION®Network. Although unlikely, it is possible that the passwords of a small percentage of PLAYSTATION Network users may have been changed through unauthorized access, making it possible to view users’ personal information and/or use the Wallet for the PLAYSTATION Store. PLAYSTATION Network accounts do not display entire credit card numbers, so any unauthorized access to your PLAYSTATION Network account is very unlikely to compromise your credit card number.
We have taken immediate measures to rectify this issue and system security is restored.
We have investigated the extent of unauthorized access and possible alteration of passwords that could have occurred before corrective measures were taken, and are directly contacting customers who may have been affected by this incident. In order to verify that your account is intact, we strongly suggest that PLAYSTATION Network users sign in to the service. If you can successfully sign in with your pre-set password, your account is not affected by this incident.”
