This current generation of consoles has seen a split occur: that between focussing mainly on graphics (PS3 and Xbox 360) and focussing mainly on the gameplay experience (Wii). Does the success of the latter strategy mean that gameplay is definitely more important than graphics?

It seems that frequently writers, critics and gamers discuss the age-old rivalry between the PS3 and the 360 in terms of new buyers and adopters — however this doesn’t take into account gamers that could be dissatisfied or interested in branching out. When any Xbox 360 breaks, the user is likely going to call Microsoft and will have to send it in for repair. Things do not go so well if you have custom artwork and signatures from the gaming community on your Xbox 360. Though one owner was assured nothing would happen to the artwork; it came back fully erased.

Though it might seem like all we do around here is talk about games, systems and the like, I like to think we’re keeping our collective eyes on the big picture of gaming as well. That’s why I’ve been keeping close dibs on Jack Thompson, effectively the enemy numero uno of the gaming industry. In his latest caper, Thompson has effectively pissed off the Supreme Court of Florida enough to mandate he contact them through a lawyer of his own!

Just as Microsoft had a special edition of the Xbox 360 for the release of Halo 3, Sony is preparing a special edition PS3 to go along with the release of Metal Gear Solid 4.

With “researchers” and “experts” all mounting fronts against video games recently, it is refreshing to see researchers who are investigating the other side of things. Though Jack Thompson, experts and the media have very little if anything positive to say about video games, new research shows that video games, even violent FPS video games, can be good for both youths and parents in a myriad of ways.

The Playstation 3 has succeeded so far in part by being one of the cheapest Blu-ray players currently on the market. So it’s no surprise that the latest firmware update for the PS3 is going to be mainly for the multimedia aspects of the console, the biggest one being BD-Live.

The Xbox 360 may not be dead in Europe after all, as last weekend saw a 40% rise in hardware sales for the Microsoft machine. Which begs the question, how long until Sony follow suit, and cut the price of the Playstation 3?

3D Realms was behind the original Prey but the project has shifted over to Radar Group for Prey 2. It was a little disconcerting to hear some say that it was not doing anything else but Prey 2. That is not the case and in addition to Prey 2 for the PC and Xbox 360 platforms it has some additional titles in the works as well.
