Microsoft denies Lite-ON making Xbox 360 Blu-Ray drive

By Jonathan Schlaffer

Microsoft denies Lite-ON making Xbox 360 Blu-Ray drive Reports from earlier today pointed to rumors that Lite-ON was producing a Blu-Ray drive for use in the next iteration of the Xbox 360.  Microsoft, has once again, shot down those rumors saying that’s not the case.

Now, this could have been another one of those April Fool’s posts but rumors about a Xbox 360 mated to a Blu-Ray drive have been circulating since the death of HD-DVD.

The DigiTimes stated outright that Lite-ON was, in fact, producing Blu-Ray drives for the Xbox 360.  Microsoft said to TechRader that,

"No. Lite-On is not manufacturing Blu-ray drives for Xbox 360. As we have stated, games are what are driving consumers to purchase game consoles and we remain focused on providing the largest library of blockbuster game available.

For our customers who want a premium movie experience we offer the largest library of on-demand HD content available and the ability to play back DVDs in high definition."

Will Microsoft make the Blu-Ray drive?  Will the PS3 eventually reign as console supreme?  This and much more on next week’s episode.

It should be noted that Microsoft has never ruled out the possibility of a Blu-Ray drive for the Xbox 360.  My opinion is that it’s only a matter of when, not if.
