THQ claims PS3 has potential for better graphics than Xbox 360

It’s no secret that the Playstation 3 gave game developers some headaches early on, but could it be that once learnt, the technology offers a much greater potential than the Xbox 360, its Microsoft made rival?
The current generation of consoles is made up of the Wii, technically inferior but with some innovative and unique gameplay, and the PS3 and Xbox, both advanced and very powerful. Which is more powerful, is up for debate, with the most obtuse fanboys arguing the case for their chosen system.
THQ has now entered the debate, with a developer at Volition making the case for the PS3 being the most powerful console on the market, and stating it has the potential for much better graphics than the Xbox 360 could ever offer.
Jeff Carroll, the associate producer in charge of multiplayer and PS3 on the upcoming Red Faction: Guerrilla, spoke to VideoGamer at THQ’s Gamers Day in San Francisco.
When asked about the differences between the systems, and the game on both consoles, he said:
“We’ve got the PS3 running at a similar frame rate to the 360. We’re finding some of the challenges of the PS3 beneficial. We feel like we’re doing rather well with the PS3.”
“We felt a tremendous pressure right at the beginning to learn as much as we could about the PS3. And our programmers have done a wonderful job.”
Then he was asked whether it is possible to achieve better graphics on the PS3 compared with the Xbox 360, and Carroll said:
“I think potentially you will. I think early on people are going to be struggling to figure out exactly how to make the PS3 work. But I think once they do they will see it’s a very powerful system underneath.”
Sony has long been heralding the PS3 as the most powerful, and graphically advanced console on the market, but until now, it’s clear that developers have struggled to get the best out of the system.
Could this signal that the tide is now changing, and that developers are finally getting to grips with the development tools adequately enough to push the PS3 to its full potential?
The PS2 certainly showed its best side in the second half of its life, with games such as Gran Turismo 4, God Of War, and Okami finally showing what the console was capable of. I’m guessing the same could prove true of the PS3, although by then, Microsoft may have decided to can the Xbox 360 for a more reliable replacement.

Everyone knows the PS3 is more powerful. XBox360 launched in 2005. It was redisgned, refurbished and re-released 5 times since. It’s time has come and gone. Microsoft needs yet another console. Another XBox with 1.5 year life span. Joke!

Games that are made specifically for PS3 always look better then 360 games. XBox fanboys like to point out games that are made for 360 then ported to PS3 as the bar for their graphic supremacy. Everyone knows that ported games are not what the Dev’s are speaking of.

I believe the key word here is “I Think”. Not even he is sure. Until the cow jumps over the moon, PS3 has no say in the graphics department when compared to the 360 almost most of the time.

Interesting… this is anecdotal but from what I’ve seen side by side, en vivo not touched up internet screen shots, DMC 4 and COD4 look identical and play better on PS3 than 360, in my humble opinion. Dark Sector, another game that’s identical in graphics performance:

And STOP saying wii is in the same “generation” as 360 and PS3. Wii isn’t even as capable as a original xbox or PS2. And no REAL gamer expends any significant interest in a wii game, so far every title is just a time killer and nothing more, and no indication that will change. Sorry, wii is just a non-portable DS or PSP, no comparison to 360 or PS3.

Yes I think its true but who is gonna spend twice the time and money for the same profit margin that a PC/360 game will reap??? Done done and Im on to the next one! All games have to go through the same process of years of code work…tweaks revisions and re writes to get to the end product. These end products are hit and miss, some good some bad and a few are excellent. No formula for the excellent game except its a numbers game. The more games produced the greater chance at code glory!!! Sony with the cell processor needs the PC/360 ports as insurance against 2 or 3 stinker games coded for the cell. Same industry same hit and miss formula only 3 to 5 times harder to get to market. A couple of bad games in a row will get the industry wispering bad things about Sony
So much risk time and money is involved to code for the cell that the need for it to be perfect will ensure that it wont be. You cant force a masterpiece. It just happens

The majority of programmers have already stated the 360 is the better machine graphically, as we have also seen by actually playing the games. Seriously, Gears of War came out in 06, and it still looks better than pretty much every single game the sony machine has spit out. The funny thing is, the 360 came out before the ps3 and it’s games still look better. the sony fans can keep telling themselves the ps3 is better, but it’s just another “emotion engine” that could always do better with better programmers? ha ha

I have to agree with the last two post, I have all three consoles and yes the Xbox mas the best games and graphics, but the PS3 has Blu ray. But the one you are all over looking the Wii has the one thing that both the others don’t, different games. The sony fanboys will say I am wrong and the Xbox ones will agree but I have no loyalties and I have all three and the reality is the Xbox at the moment has better games and controller, but in the future its any ones guess. Also Gears is the best next gen game for graphics and yes I do have uncharted which is good but not quite upthere with Gears.

Although constantly saying the Wii is technically inferior is really only a half truth. As technically it has the most sophisticated controller, it has IR pointer aswell. and what ‘technically superior’ machine doesnt have built in Wifi………oh ye i remember………..
Im getting sick of articles obsessed by graphics. So what if the PS3 does have the better graphics its hardly like we will really ever notice it. All the consoles get alot of crummy games. But i see very few titles that really push either the 360 or the PS3 in the graphics department.
Lets face it the developers just dont have the money.

yeah the 360 has more software sale but the question is have you seen an xbox game reached more than 10 mill?? well i don’t think so, the best selling on xbox is halo and the rest has poor sale all are below 5 mill but the playstation has more, just see what GT5 MGS4 and other game will do to the sale chart and GT5 is already selling like hot cake ,oh! GT5p 1.5 mill pre order my bad, and it’s not even hyped up like HALO 3, same as MGS4..Halo is not even special it’s just an average FPS id rather play counter strike than halo all day..

The PS3 is always ‘about to…..’.
It’s been ‘on the verge of demonstrating it’s superiority’ for 2 years now and yet never quite manages to do anything other than (occasionally but not always) match the XBox 360.
By the time the PS3 comes good it’ll be time for the next gen to arrive.

Thats it. if you want wireless thats 120 dollars! and you already pass the ps3 point of start for the more expensive version. oh lets say you want to use voice on the game so guess what you aint got no bluetoot so now you see yourself having to pay micro$oft 70$ while in the other hand in the ps3 you just plug your bluetooth and if you dont have,at least when you do is going to be for the ps3 and the phone not only for the console. now you are looking at a 600 dollard machine that lacks bluetooth or blue-ray. add to that the 50 cause you are definitively wanting to play online so now you are looking more at a 650 dollard machine. say you wanted to watch hd movies on the dead format HD-VD well that would have set you back for another 200 and there you have it, an 850 dollard machine that is (still even like that) inferior to the ps3 lacking the cell processor. Now imagine all those things that are sold separtly fit on the ps3 as it is and it looks beautiful now imagine all the connection that it requires to put all that, eww. For your information the only reason why 360 has a bigger base installed is because of is full year advantage of release compared to the ps3. Data shows now that the ps3 is selling more than the 360 specially in japan. I have nothing agains product or pro sony, but as a technician you have to admit the 360 is a risk while a ps3 is more of CD. Come on guys dont blow gates, grow up. Every xbox comes with a wireless headset for free, where do you get this $70 figure from??
You can download HD movies via LIVE with out the need for any disk.

Game chat and private chat and video chat is more sophisticatd on the 360 and sony have been quoted saying they intend to resolve this but until then STOP BULLSHITTING.

Personally, I own a Wii, PC, & PS3, why PS3? The failure rate and the controller, thats about it. All the games I want on 360 are also on the PS3, tack on the nice blu ray player and there you have it, but the 360 is still a very very very nice machine that I almost purchased.
Oh I think you guys also missed one more major selling point to come for the ps3 (unless MS get into gear) and that is the euro bundling of PS3 & GTA4. Your average joe on the street won’t know about the DLC for the 360 (I frankly don’t care about it) and may opt to go for the bundle instead of the 360 especially if Sony make it a better value…

ja, steve09 you make a very ridiculous point. All im going to tell you is this. How in thew world are you getting HD from live? You can download a movie yeah, but not HD, and thank god for that fact. Because a movie that plays in “REAL” HD is on a resolution of about 1080p or 1080i and if you had your 360 right now and it wasnt on repair you could check that yourself. Now tell me, if you do get HD isnt that stupid, tell you why right now. An HD movie as it is without any extra features run about 18gb of space. If you have a regular 360 which most of the users have thats about it for then having only 20gb. If you have an elite you could put about four. How are you going to take that movie to your friends house? are you willing to carry your 3shitty box arround?, if you do then you are a real fan boy man, i give it to you. You think microsoft is going to let you burn those or download them anytime you want. Ah and let me remind you something. What internet do you have? Fiver optics or T4 right, becuase if not you want to see a movie on the weekend you better start downloading from a week notice because 18 gigs dont come that easy out of a sturated servef from microsoft.

If you have a tv under 20 inches which I assume you have then you dont notice the difference but if you have anything that is true HD then you talking about over 36 inches and thats when you see the difference. The best ps3 games match the best xbox 360 games.
If I was going to choose one it would be uncharted, but only because I like the jungle environment over the war environment.

As a ps3 owner, and with all the talk of potential, I’m getting a bit tired of waiting for that game which will sink xbox 360 (soz xbox people, but we all like winning). PCs are already destroying games on full settings using dual cards using 1G of ram for graphics (yeh yeh it aint cheap). If xbox 360 beats ps3, Ill take it on the chin. Still waiting…
