Sony claims MS has blown it already - PS3 to beat Xbox 360

The three big current generation consoles of Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii are currently battling hard for sales, with games, peripherals, price cuts and hardware advances all contributing to the battle. However, according Sony, the battle could already be over, with Microsoft having already blown it.
GamePro recently interviewed Scott Steinberg, Vice President of Product Marketing at Sony Computer Entertainment America, in which he spoke about the PS3’s momentum, the recent victory for Blu-ray over HD DVD, and much more.
The biggest claim he made was over Microsoft’s strategy over the last couple of years, and how it may have lead to them blowing the fight already.
When asked about keeping interest high for the PS3 amongst gamers, Steinburg replied:
“I think [the Blu-ray win] is a huge momentum builder for us and I think it is part of why we believe 2008 is going to be a monster year for the PS3. When you incorporate games like Gran Turismo 5, Metal Gear Solid 4, Little Big Planet, and Resistance 2…there will a great mixture of new IP and proven PlayStation brands.”
“I think these factors are timed perfectly because our competition has already leveraged all their big assets in the first couple of years and may have punched themselves out of the fight. We are the [HD movie] standard and now we have the creativity and the products, so I think that formula is going to drive consumers to the PS3.”
I think he’s right to a certain extent, as the PS3 certainly has more big, exclusive, mainstream franchises on the way than the Xbox 360 has. The games he mentioned are the kinds of games which are potential system sellers, and that has to be a worry for Microsoft.
Blu-ray has also helped, and will continue to help Sony sell PS3 consoles. Microsoft seem to be sticking their heads in the sand over the high definition formats, and constantly denying any move to compete by adding a Blu-ray drive to the Xbox 360.
I know that it’s Steinburg’s job to talk up the PS3, while completely putting the Xbox 360 down, but when everything he says rings true, it’s hard not to see things from his perspective.
Don’t get me wrong, Microsoft aren’t out of it yet, but unless they do something, and fast, they could find themselves battered on both sides by the very different, but very competitive PS3 and Wii.

I have the PS3. I’ve had it replaced already (failed to read the Blue-ray discs). My issue with blue-ray is the cost and I sure don’t see it dropping in the stores around me. I will continue to buy regular DVD until the price lowers enough to make the system worth the effort and cost.
I understand the concept of ‘future systems’ I have one…..some day in the future I might put it to use.

MS dead, what a load of rubbish. More then 70% of all next gen games are either out or coming out on both consoles. Exclusive titles will sell that particular console but as we have seen so far with this generation the amount of single console exclusives is becoming smaller and smaller. MOST people buy gaming consoles for that reason…. to play games. So until the games publishers stop making games for the 360, it will be around for sometime yet. Oh and by the way I have all three consoles. no fanboy here.

I would agree that Microsoft blew their lead. I am not a Sony fanboy and own all 3 consoles. Not only has Microsoft “blown their wad” and released most of their high profile games in 2007, thanks to the red ring of death their hardware is questionable at best. Now that it is becoming harder to distinguish multi-platform games for the PS3 from 360, consumers will look for the system that gives them more bang for the buck. The Wii has a unique control system, the PS3 has blu-ray and their established franchises are now being released in 2008 and what does Microsoft have…third place.

Well as “sam” said, Sony likes to pretty talk gamers. I don’t think they will end up winning the war. In the other hand its true that pretty dam good games are coming for the PS3 but Xbox isn’t out of the scene yet. Games like Gears 2, Forza 3, Halo Wars and Halo Chronicles, Mass Effect 2, Bioshock, will rock the Xbox in this and the next couple of years. In fact i believe Microsoft strategy was a lot better by starting with very strong and amazing titles so the people would get plugged in, not like Sony starting with promises and giving fake gold to people. It’s true what the article says, Microsoft has shown a lot of their stuff and it seems like they have run out of games, but still it has sold and shown its capacity. Sony haven’t shown their good stuff yet and because of it they are loosing money. Lets hope they can step up this year but one thing is clear, Xbox is still winning and I’ll bet my ass that this year is going to be a Xbox 360 year again

Too Human 1, 2 &3, Halo Wars, Mass Effect 2 & 3, PGR series etc.
How ridiculous a comment was it to make that Microsoft has leveraged all their big assets already. Any sane person would agree that the quick list I rattled off the top of my head is a lot more impressive than the crap that Sony has to throw out there.
BluRay is also on the same path as the record player being that everything is moving to online downloads. Do you really think anyone is going to pay $30 to $40 for one BluRay movie when they can pay $10-20 per month and watch anything they want whenever they want? Let’s get real here people….if Netflix or equivalent becomes available through the 360 this game is OVER! Nothing to talk about at that point.
It’s not a matter of if…it’s a matter of when. To top it off…looks like the 360 is coming out with a Wii like controller giving the graphics of the 360 and fun of the Wii in the same package. CHECK MATE!!!

When everyone said xbox is so killing ps3 two years ago, look my post up, i knew bluray was gonna win and new ps3 would win. Microsoft is only a proven winning company when others do thier work. Xbox is by thier hands and hence the word failure from the getco. Stick to paying ppl for a cut of the market microsoft, this new way aint working. Microsoft is just two moves away from winning in the movie arena:
1. The Netflix deal will allow streaming of 7,000 movies (in SD but STILL a huge move) and growing quickly for a flat monthly fee from a company that ALREADY has distribution agreements with Sony Pictures.
2. When you can BUY HD downloadable movies from XBox Live and freely download and delete them (the way it already works for HD Television episodes) the need for physical media truly does go away. The rental model is good but for those who would rather buy for $25 than rent for $5 they desperately need this new option. They also need to bundle the equivalent special features you would normally get with a physical disc like director’s comments and deleted scenes, and they need to make closed captioning standard for all purchased or rented HD DL movies.

Blown what? Last time I checked 360 still had sold more consoles than PS3, and the attach rate is higher with 360 too.
According to a lot of Sony blowhards, 2007 was meant to be the year of the PS3. Then they said that 2008 was the year of the PS3. We’re a quarter of the year through and I really doubt PS3 is going to eclipse 360 in sales.
2014 might be a more realistic statement for ‘Year of the PS3′.
Also, was it strange to anyone else that ‘Home’ was not mentioned? I hear rumours that Phil Harrison left Sony because it was decided not to release Home. But then again, they are rumours.

Sandman, Sony has lost money on the ps3 for nearly two years and is expected to make a profit in the summer while the xbox and xbox 360 lost money for nearly 6 years with microsoft posting it’s first quarterly profit (on the xbox brand) last year.
All i’m saying is don’t write the ps3 off, considering most playstation owners own a PS2 and haven’t brought a PS3 yet.
It’s also too early to decide which console is gunna win this gen but as much as it pains me to say it will probably be the Wii (Hopefully not). Which in my Opinion will be a backstep.

I admire both consoles but the fact is that outside America is Sony country, just check out the figures for Xbox 360 sales in Asia, and even in Europe the Playstation brand is just so strong. This console war is a global thing, not just an American thing, and it’s going to be interesting since each console has it’s particular strongholds. I’m happy, competition keeps me online for free!

To everyone touting Xbox live downloadable movies as a replacement for physical storage media, tell me: How many movie studios support that? Can I get any movie I want? NO? didn’t think so, that’s why Blu Ray wins, all studios support it, If I wan’t a new HD movie I don’t have to play the guessing game as to whether it’s up on Live or not, I just walk to the store and get it.

U know what i do while everyone is lookin up sales figures and profit margins, i play great games on both systems! Competition is great cuz it keeps SOME crap from slippin through the cracks. Time for a real reality check, both systems will be around for the longevity of this generation. I mean if you’re really waitin for a so-called WINNER, you need to find something better to do with your time. So many thought Nintendo was dead after Gamecube and to my surprise they are doin quite well. Companies change strategies to compete all the time, it’s how business works. And for the future LOSER, i’m sure you will still see that publishers games in some manner, ala SEGA. I sure wont complain to see Microsoft games on my ps or Sony games on my xbox or whatever they’re called by then. Either way they will be competin against another console just the same, and we’ll all still be playin great games. Well, most of us. Some will be trying to decide a WINNER before and after these new consoles arrive. Vegas is takin bets that the Apple iGame or Toshiba Niba will be the console of the next decade.

Hook up your online (it’s free for silver accounts) and get a taste and then you can have the right to talk. Because once you go on and see 300 plus movies and about the same amount of TV shows that can be downloaded your Bullshit will just get flushed down the toilet. By the way I don’t care about the one studio that Sony owns because I will never support is so who cares. Sony plays dirty and paid for bluray to win is not a fair deal and therefore bluray is forced on people and it was not a decision chosen by the consumer. This BD-Live that is now coming out and is on 1 bluray movie at the moment that sports that feature and all those features were already on HD DVD. Sony is just a pathetic company.

Hey Kevin, aren’t you forgetting Europe? A place with a population bigger than both NA and Japan put together, how does that make you paramount? In Europe it’s a pretty interesting battle ground. Also, Nintendo is doing the ‘KILLING’ of everyone in Japan (and the world), not Microsoft, which is pretty much non existent in the ‘paramount’ market of Japan.

Ahh…yes start accusing. I actually do have a 60 gig PS3 and it has quite a lot of dust on it. I was excited as anyone when the ps3 came out but very disappointed with the garbage that they have so far given to us. I just recently bought my Xbox 360 and must tell you I was surprised by the quality of games!!! No the quality of the machine, I am not to happy about.

I’m a ps3 owner and I’m really looking forward to this years games but stop with all these pathetic bluray movie arguements you only play into the hands of xbox users. For anyone saying ps3 is just good for blu ray films you’re helping their argument. I freely admit ps3 has been a huge disappointment for me so far and I refuse to pay over the top for a slightly better looking dvd when but does that mean you’ll shout me down too????
There will be lots of games out this year that will finally rival xbox which I am happy about. Next Christmas ps3 will be the biggest contender even over the wii with games like mgs4 and gt.

THE REAL WINNER OF THE SYSTEM WARS.
Who cares which system is better, the point is if you have a monopoly like the miscrosoft had with thier windows 10 years ago, they could charge anything and make there software as inferior as possible (the diabocal that is windows 98 and now vista); the way i see it is that ps3 and xbox are neck and neck and they will be fighting for more consumers which means price cuts, more innovative software and hardware. I’ve always been confused by people who say that “Console X is collecting dust,” and then try to imply that it is the console maker’s fault. Isn’t it, oh I don’t know, YOUR fault if you’re not playing the console? And let’s try and rise above the idiotic “no good games” statement. If you haven’t played the game, then you’re not qualified to pass judgement on it.
Example: I never play my Wii. Is that Nintendo’s fault? No! I COULD be playing Zelda, Metroid, Fire Emblem, etc. But I’m not, because I’m too busy with Devil May Cry 4, Warhawk, Hot Shots Golf 5, Crisis Core, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Monster Hunter 2. And the only reason I am playing those games is because I feel like it. It’s my personal preference, and if someone doesn’t want to play those games, that doesn’t make them an idiot.
Paying money for a console that is basically guaranteed to break might be considered “unintelligent,” though. Of course… Mass Effect and Lost Odyssey may just get me to be “unintelligent” in the near future… *waits patiently for tax return*

i love my xbox,heres why:
1.) i love my red ring of death, sending it to m$ everytime to get it repaired.
2.) I also love that i have to pay £40 a year for an internet service which ps3 owners get for free.
3.) I love adding such items like a blu-ray player and a wi-fi adapter to match standard ps3 speck. Sure we dont have sixaxis/dualshock controllers…but we have to pay for new batteries every five minutes.
4.)I love the fact that my xbox has less power, is less attractive and has no potential for the future seeing as all companies will start investing time and money in the more powerful ps3.
5.) I love the fact we have washed up games and spin off’s of older games such as halo chronicles, and gears of war 2,3,4 and probably 10.
6.) I love the fact that the ps3 is outselling the xbox 360 in most other continents, yet m$ thinks that the usa is the world and so if its winning their, all other continents must be winning.
7.) i love the fact i spent £115 on a redundant hd-dvd player
8.) i love the fact i cant play my xbox games on my 360 when, at least the 60gb versions of ps3 can

MOU - you must not have heard that netflix and ms are in talks about movie distribution via xbox live. they have a huuuuge library. the “consumer” did NOT choose bluray. with less than 1% penetration, the consumer is almost completely unaware. Sony BOUGHT toshiba out of the market by selling them production facilities. you don’t actually think it was a coincidence do you? when the actual press release of hd dvd bowing out and toshiba’s incurring hardware production facilities for sony came out in THE SAME WEEK…. please… don’t you find it hypocritical that sony mocks the 360’s use of first person shooters then hypes Resistance 2? i’m glad you brought up eu, since the 360 is at 2 million in the UK alone while the ps3 has barely hit one million. and yes, the Wii is KILLING the ps3 in japan. In fact, selling THREE times the Wii as ps3 on the year. now THAT’S bad with “100 million loyal ps2 users” that sony and the fanboys hyped. Now that bluray has “won the format war” where is the mass rush to buy the ps3 as a cheap player that was promised? it’s STILL being outsold in the largest markets even AFTER “winning”. it looks as tho the ps3 has nothing more to offer. Please pretend you are talking to, say, your friends or family. I’m sure you don’t sound this silly when you talk to them.
a) Cite your statistics. If Blu-Ray has/had 1% penetration, cite an article that backs it up, or don’t talk about it.
b) Sony bought Toshiba out of the market? Cite your sources. Most of the world believes that Universal switching to Blu-Ray is what caused Toshiba to bow out. If you have evidence that says otherwise, show us.
c) When has Sony openly mocked the 360’s dependence on shooters? And is this your war of admitting that the 360 DOES in fact have a dependence on the FPS genre? Cite your sources.
d) In EU territories, the 360 is just under 2 million units sold, while the PS3 is over 1 million while being available for purchase for half the amount of time. Do that math: in TWO years, the 360 is under 2 million. In ONE year, the PS3 is over 1 million. What does this mean to you?
e) The Wii is killing the PS3 in Japan. You’re right. You know what else the Wii is killing? Everything! That includes the 360. Which I assume you are trying to defend, correct? So why even bring this point up? As it stands, for the last month or so, the PS3 has outsold the 360 week-by-week in North America and Europe, and has outsold the 360 in Japan every week since it was launched. So however much the Wii is killing the PS3, it is killing the 360 even more. So bringing these figures into the discussion is actually bad for your argument.
f) After the Blu-Ray victory, sales of the PS3 increased in all markets. Hence the aforementioned out-selling of the 360. Before you get upset, ask yourself this: why do I care? Am I not happy with my 360? If I am, why should I try and make other people feel bad about THEIR console?
g) Yes, some amazing games are being “pumped out” on the 360. There are also some amazing games being pumped out on the PS3. Ever played any? No? Aw man, sucks to be you. You’re missing out.

Xbox 360 is a dead already, PS3 is the future.
Blu-ray Disc wins because no one wants to download a movie from Xbox Live at just 720p and for a limited time only how gay is that. With Blu-ray you get to save you hard drive memory plus is for you forever and is full 1080p double what Microsoft’s Xbox Live offers. Plus this year Microsoft doesn’t stand a chance against Sony’s PLAYSTATION 3 exclusives and new features.

i dont usually leave comments when i read these articles but what the hell!! i have to say that i truly believe that you are blind to think that dlc, namely movies, will win over the favoured blu-ray. yes, i agree if you look at the music industry and see how well it is doing on the download side that we can tell, movies will end up going the same way…but when? not for a while is my guess.
in britain its going to be at least 5yrs before we get fibre optic broadband capable of download speeds where its justifiable to download HD movies. not to forget that there is still a huge population now only just switching to dvd. i work in the film industry and have done for the last 4.5yrs so i have seen this trend first hand.
since blu-rays introduction in 2006 it has gained momentum faster than any other format to have hit the shelves, just look at the sales figures for blu-ray discs, they are now starting to fairly compare with dvd sales…granted, dvd is still doing alot better, but dvd has been established for a whole lot longer, but can you remember how slowly dvd worked its way into the market? i believe it wasnt until the PS2 that it then picked up (note: that time around xbox and playstation were both using the same media storage ‘dvd’)..im wandering now but ill come back to that. dvd is still going to be around for a while yet before it gets phased out but meanwhile, blu-ray is just going to get stronger, taking dvd’s place in about 5yrs. i suppose what im getting at here is, this trend of people buying physical media is a true indication that its not going to just end so that dlc can replace it. so its not time for dlc but infact is time for blu-ray, so sony did the right thing(it really is what consumers wanted so they chose it).
back to what i said earlier about xbox and ps2 using same media storage, this time around they are not. with blu-ray becoming the standard, games developers are really wanting to jump on board too and do away with develoing for dvd, with the technological advancements, we are seeing this more and more! this is going to mean that games on the 360 will end up on multiple discs just because the code was created for blu-ray. this is what sony planned, and is what they needed to do.
this is not say that i dislike the xbox, infact i would say the complete opposite, there have been alot of great games for it, but in reality there are only a couple that are left to come out that i want to play. sony have carried many franchises over 3 generations now. xbox, due to its losses over 6 yrs on the original xbox and the 360(hardware failures anyone) have only developed a couple of great franchises (by buying 3rd party developers, note: bungie has bought out its exclusive tie with microsoft).it doesnt look all that promising for xbox in the end.
i would agree with sony that they are starting to deliver, slowly, but they are starting. and by the end of this year i think playstation and xbox will be practically neck and neck in terms of units sold. thats cant be good for xbox, especially if they still ahvent fixed their rrod problem,

My console’s media abilitys are secondary…Its nice that I can watch movies and look at pics and listen to music but its the games that got me (Gamer) to lay down my green. The 360 is based on standard PC code that all programers know like the back of their hand. The PS3 sure has a steep learning curve program wise and I believe that in about 5 years or so (if the industry does’nt leap frog over the cell) the programers will be up to speed. No contest its 3 to 1 at best for game releases (includes ports) and 10 to 1 for games that use the cell to its fullest. I need a new game every 2 to 4 weeks and Sony and the PS3 cant deliver for years to come. I may pick one up in a few years and rip through the non ported games in about 6 months.

The 360 is the perfect machine for today maybe in the future I will think about a future machine. But seeing as the tech scene changes so fast and often, chances are the cell will be old hat before Sony’s idea of the future becomes reality.

I own both and the only use my PS3 gets is for it’s multimedia hub capabilities. I’ve finished the three or four games that were worth playing months ago. Custom soundtracks and the XMB features of the 360 will always cause me to choose the 360 version right now.
I own a couple Blu-Ray discs, but at $30 a pop, I know I wont be owning a lot of those any time soon.
Tired of hearing about PS3’s “Potential” when the 360, despite it’s hardware problems, actually “Does” when it comes to games.
The PS3 store and it’s selection also pales in comparison to being able to download top titles like Puzzle Quest from the XBOX 360 Live Arcade.
You know, I’m sure we needed that Cell and Blu-Ray technology to run Flow. Stardust HD is pretty cool, Pain was fun for awhile…
And remember, any argument about “BUT THAT GAME IS GOING TO BE GREAT!” is another talk of potential. I’ll believe it when I finally see it.
Anyways, by the time the PS3 gets up to speed, MS will have their next gen system out…so MS will always be ahead now.
So, what MS lacked in hardware (which is coming to an end), it made up for in the quantity and quality of games.
Sony has some great hardware, but you know, without games, it’s just a pretty shiny black thing sitting on my shelf. I was promised so much more.

The clock is ticking on the future proof (emotion engine) Sony console. Nothing is future proof in the tech industry and just because a company spends billions researching a chip and NEEDS to keep it in the market for a decade to break even.
Future proof is Sony’s code word for return on our investment over a ten year window. So the cell has been out for a year…Its got 2 more before the chip industry own it…then two more before the better chip is cheap as dirt. 5 years for the PS3 or I should say 4 more.Sales are slow and the clock is ticking. I remember I viciously boycotted the original Xbox, because Microsoft was attempting to buy out all the major software studios. I saw this as an attack on gaming as an art form and refused to support the Xbox brand.
They’ve now chilled out with that strategy (although they do still like to throw money at their problems) so I can keep a clean conscience when I enjoy Mass Effect and Lost Odyssey.
The way I see it, even though I still don’t care for the Xbox brand, as long as Microsoft can make sure that their consoles get games worth playing, then they’ve justified their presence in the gaming world. And I think this principle applies to any other company that has or will have a major gaming console on the market.

I’d rather buy all consoles (which I have) and own just the few blockbuster titles from each (because hey, they’re all damn good games) than to proclaim loyalty to any brand… Yea it’s cost intensive, but worth it in the end. Give you a spectrum to choose from.
And it definitely beats being a mindless droning fan-boy buying a slew of mediocre games to support a brand/console like it seems most people do. While you endulge in the scraps of your respective consoles, other who are being open minded enjoy the cream of the crop the industry has to offer from each console.

If Apple is left or right they got the whole field covered. Yep you got it Apple is selling the most games because both systems use their chips. Yeah they just sit back, wait to see who wins, than boom! And if you think Apple is left or right wing well I guess Itunes would just play holy music but they don’t my whole library I got’s, called metal . Man this argument still going, so sick of it. I own a Wii and that’s it. But I can tell you now, This war has already been won by Sony so why do people go on about it still? 6 of my friends all have PS3’s now. 4 of them had 360’s and sold them for PS3 and the other 2 bought the PS3 outright simply because it is a far better, higher quality technologically advanced equipment over the XBOX. At the end of the day, thats all it is…..a BOX.
