Poll shows Xbox 360 beating out PS3 for GTA IV audience; no love for Wii

April 14, 2008

As the end of month draws closer, gamers around the world are building up a rather geeky anticipation of one of the most desired titles in gaming history, Grand Theft Auto 4. Though Microsoft doesn’t do everything right, it seems to be doing something correctly, as a recent poll shows that players around the world prefer the Xbox 360 console for GTA IV over the Playstation 3.

These results were accumulated from some of AOL’s top gaming blogs, including Joystiq, PS3Fanboy and Xbox360Fanboy. Over 38,000 users participated in the survey, and as it stands now, the Xbox 360 has claimed 58% of the vote, beating out Playstation 3, which claims only 42% and just over 16,000 votes.

The difference in votes could be due to the fact that Microsoft has payed a hefty $50 million for 10 hours worth of exclusive download content for Xbox Live; another expected reason is simply that the Xbox 360 has more users than the Playstation 3 does currently.

That isn’t to say that the ratios and percentages can’t change during the life of the game; a number of polls are showing a growing number of Playstation 3 supporters, and many anticipate that, with the “victory” of Blu-Ray over HD-DVD, more developers will develop both original and cross-platform titles on the Playstation 3 rather than the Xbox 360.

However, the facts is the facts, and right now Microsoft’s money seems to have won the day. Maybe Xbox could throw a little Live party, assuming they could keep the online service running properly long enough to light the candles on the cake.

  1. The Professor:

But here is the thing about this type of poll…only a “hardcore gamer” would be visiting these sites and vote for such a poll. And we know that they make up a fairly small percentage of the people that will actually purchase this game so I wouldn’t put too much stock in these numbers. Then again with the 360’s US install base, these might not be far off.

  2. HomeBoy:

I’ve little doubt that the 360 version will outsell the PS3 version, but I don’t think it’s going to be the landslide that a lot of folks expect. I’m interested to see what effect the PS3 GTA4 bundles will have on overall sales.

  3. Triston McIntyre:

i would agree with the PS3 Fanboy and Xbox 360 Fanboy, but not with Joystiq…that’s a fairly common quick look for most gamers, casual or otherwise.

  4. Mornelithe:

Either way, given the install base of the 360 vs PS3, it would appear the attach rate is higher on the PS3 in this case.

    Morne

  5. bill D.:

Considering that 18million have an xbox and about 12 mave ps3 this means that if this was just about shear numbers then the xbox would 1.5 times the number of votes as the ps3 which it does not. So clearly a higher percentage of the ps3 instalbase will be picking up the title compared to the xbox.

  6. JayR:

    ps3 for me either way…

  7. Triston McIntyre:

    Definitely, Morne.

  8. The Future of Sega:

    I ask myself…..do i care…

  9. idiot:

    u do care… u read the article… u bothered to type a comment… u need to move on with ur life…

  10. Major:

Blu Ray winning will increase ps3 sales, so will GTA which alot of people will buy ps3s for (and mgs4 as well). I don’t think the money m$ spent on gta will change much, Blizzard spent that much on vanilla WoW and I doubt the 10 hours will compare in anyway (not to mention no one usually ever hits 100% in gta games). The extra content is just more smokescreen to make xbox seem better (like how they make people think its cheaper than ps3 lol), the real decider is going to be sixaxis not the content m$ wasted money on. If the sixaxis is actually used for a good part of the game it will make the ps3 version better no doubt.

    @The Future of Sega

    Quit being a playa hata!

  12. Ivan_PSP:

Well I’m buying Grand Theft Auto IV for my 60GB PLAYSTATION 3. I would never buy this game for Xbox 360 it will blow it up Red Light of Death. AOL and Joystiq are dead websites. PS# version is still selling more so who cares about poll most of those voters have never play games.

  13. Matty:

    Ivan, get a life…

  14. Gerry and the Pacemakers:

Triston, where did you hear that there will be 10 hours of DLC for the xbox? I thought the only thing known about the content was that it will be episodic, I’ve never seen length specified anywhere, and Rockstar is always tight lipped about these things.

  15. darkwhitehair:

Since Microsoft was desperate enough to pay for the extra content… let them bask in the light…

GTA 4 is probably going to be game of the year… but there are plenty of other good games coming out… MGS4… Star Wars Force Unleashed…

What happened to God of War 3??? there was a rumor going around it was going to be released in 2008.. but no word from sony :( I wanna kill Zeus!!!

  16. kevin:

Future of Sega – Well said. I would love “Tristan” to define the “many anticipate that, with the “victory” of Blu-Ray over HD-DVD, more developers will develop both original and cross-platform titles on the Playstation 3 rather than the Xbox 360.” Who, or what, “many”? what a load of b.s.

  17. Triston McIntyre:

Gerry: A UK Xbox magazine got to review GTA IV early, and claimed there was that much extra gameplay (check Joystiq, I believe).

Kevin, many industry analysts and writers do believe that bluray could be a deciding factor over the direction developers take games. I’m surprised you don’t know that; we write enough articles here that you harp on that you should be more aware. I wonder why you continue to torture yourself when you seem to despise me and my colleagues’ writing so much?

  18. CDA:

18 Million (360) Vs 9 Million (PS3) shows no doubt who will sell more. In fact which games that has been released on both systems has the PS3 ever beaten against the 360. I believe that the 360 has won every time. With that kind of spread it’s a no brainer who will sell more. But it does not matter as long as your having fun on your console of choice. I’ll see you 360 boys online on launch day.

  19. Rob:

Surely one would expect the 360 to sell more, considering it has been out for year longer and therefore has a larger install base. Or is that just me being pedantic?

  20. Arvis:

    Triston,

Kevin’s not a bad guy, he’s just bored at work and rants to keep himself awake. :)

Between you and me, though, I know you’re simply reporting here information you have read and discovered for yourself, but personally I am loathe to believe that the 360’s exclusive DLC is even close to being finished, much less available for a dubious “early reviewer” to have played and calculated the length of.
    *shrugs*
I could be wrong, but if the DLC is already playable, why don’t they just stick it on the 360 game disc with the rest of the game?

    -Arvis

  21. CDA:

This Bluray has caused a lot of problems. How do you determine who buys the console for a Bluray player and who buys it for a Game Console and who buys it for both. Because all of my friends who have the PS3 don’t even use it for bluray movies they only play games on it.

  22. CAD:

Someone please start a poll on that.

  23. kevin:

triston – yes, i’ve read your “articles” but so far only the pro-sony developers are touting bluray. noone else. it’s funny tho; why developers NEVER asked for a hd format disk before sony forced one on everyone. interesting. I don’t torture myself at all…i just love pointing out the insanity and cowardice of your “reporters” who write about w/o facts on try to use opinions in their place. So, since you stated developers believe bluray is the way to go; please name them, SPECIFICALLY. thanks.

  24. kevin:

btw – you do realize sony NEVER touted bluray as a benefit to gaming right? not once. Not from Kuturagi, not from Hirai, not even Stringer. Only the fanboys.

  25. Arvis:

    Kevin,

You don’t think Blu Ray allowed MGS4 to become a higher quality game? Compression techniques have come a long way, but you still lose some visual quality with it. I don’t see how more space for a game could possibly be a bad thing.

    -Arvis

  26. Filip:

Wow, I actually expected a bit higher numbers for Xbox360, having in mind installed base and paying for DLC. On the other hand, I think GTA will shift more actual PS3 consoles than xboxes.

  27. The stash:

kevin, it was sony who first started touting blu ray for games. If you don’t know that then you really don’t know anything about the gaming industry. Just do some searching, you’ve obviously got time to spare, Sony touted blu ray for games long before movies, and I mean going all the way back to 05, go search it up there kev, you go, come back, and surprise us with some actual knowledge and less of that “kevin rant”

  28. Daniel:

OK look, the only good blu ray does is for movies. Everyone thinks that just because it sounds cool it is. Blu-ray has 50 gigs. DVD has 17(dual layered) Blu Ray reads at 9mbs. DVD: 16mbs. close to twice. To catch up, developers put the same thing on the blu ray twice in some places, or install info on the hard drive. After that it leaves what I belive is like around 25 gig. only 8 more than DVD. AND the 360 has 3 times more the CPU power than PS3 (look it up) and a stronger gpu. So u can have a GTA city on a PS3 that is like 32% bigger than a 360 one but the Xbox can run it way better.

  29. winner:

Who gives a crap? Both games are apparently identical, apart from the extra content on 360. You all have obviously bought your machine of choice, and are all going to get the game. You can sit there and throw figures at each other all day, but unless you’re planning on buying a million 360s or a million PS3s, then total console sales shouldn’t effect you. Both consoles have sold millions, meaning that they are both not going down the path of the Sega Saturn, so all this fighting is really childish and pointless.

  30. winner:

And it’s a known fact that multiplatform games look and feel pretty ordinary when ported from 360 to PS3, and they play nearly identically when ported from PS3 to 360. Developers have noticed this too, and have come to the conclusion that the PS3 cannot handle 360 games, but the 360 can handle PS3 games, and lead the development on the PS3 because of this. So at the end of the day, it doesn’t bother me which platform is the lead developer, the games are going to be identical from hereon in.

  31. For Real:

GTA IV will have 100+ hours of gameplay plus endless hours of online play. The extra content will not be released until October. Plus Microsoft is going to charge you for that extra content. Put that all together and suddenly it doesn’t seem that great of a deal. I remember GTA San Andreas being so long I never finished it. Adding more missions to that game 6-8 months later with a price tag would have been a joke.

The only way this would have been a good deal is if the extra content would had been completed and included on the final copy of GTA IV on release day. But how else would Microsoft make up for the 150 million spent for the extra content?

  32. Spideydog:

Hmmm, if the 360’s CPU is 3 x more powerfull than PS3 cell processor, then why is it that PS3’s are being used in “cpu banks” for super computing.

How does one come to the conclusion that “360 can handle PS3 games, but PS3 cannot handle 360 games” I think you need to come up with something a little more than just a statement to convince me.

360 reminds me of “The little engine that could” It tries to live up to the PS3, but cooks themselves in the process.

(this last paragraph was a joke – before we sling “fanboi” insults)

  33. kevin:

stash – kuturagi NEVER, mentioned bluray as a benefit to gaming pre-launch. It was only afterward that they tried to spin it to justifiy the $600 price tag, but gamers aren’t so easily fooled. Why pay that much when the 360 produces better graphics, better gameplay, and better online? Post ANY link proving otherwise. But ONLY from a sony employee. thanks. sorry little guy, but i’ve been following this “war” closely since 2002. It’s funny tho; developers whine about memory, they whine about gpu, the whine about architectures, but have NEVER whined about having more storage space on a disk. Only AFTER the ps3 launched did sony-paid developers came out and said it “could be” (with no proof) a benefit. believe what you want. you ps3 fanboys are so far out of touch with reality it would be funny if not so damn sad.

  34. Daniel:

Spidey, the reason it is used in cpu banks is because the PS3 has 7 processors but only output like 3.2ghz at a time. Thats really good and it keeps it from overheating like a 360 (ur right there). but Xbox 360 has 3 processors running at the same time clocked at 3.2ghz each. The newest Xbox’s are quieter and cooler though so its not a big deal anymore. the PS3 does stream its work better than the Xbox 360 because the cell broadband but overall FOR GAMES(which Xbox has better than PS3) the xbox wins cuz the stronger gpu and 360 has 5 times the PS3’s system bandwidth.
4 real: THE DLC COST 50 mil not 150.
I love all the systems but people that think they know stuff arent gonna sit here and say a bunch of stupid crap.

    LOOK HERE>http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/617/617951p1.html

  35. Spideydog:

I hear what you are saying. I like both systems (wouldn’t buy a 360 though, personal reasons – reliability) From everything I have read about the systems, is there is minimal difference between them technically in all areas of the machines, including the processors. I have not read anywhere that it is 3-5 times better except for your article, which I am scepical about as the information is provided by microsoft ( particularly when microsoft aren’t all that truthful, not saying sony is either )

    Gained from http://www.romow.com/games-blog/sony-playstation-3-vs-microsoft-xbox-360-point-by-point-comparison/

“The processor is the core hardware for both systems. It determines how much power the console has to process complex calculations in less time which is altogether very important considering you’re dealing with complicated 3D graphics for both systems. That said, theoretically, the PS3 can do more since it has 7 synergistic processing units, while Xbox 360 has 3 even though they’re both clocked at 3.2 Ghz. However, since the PS3 is more complicated to program games for, Xbox 360 will have more games in its initial line-up compared to PS3.

Also, relevant to processing speed is the floating point performance measurement of teraflops. The PS3 has 2.18 tfps and Xbox 360 has 1. Again, these values translate to world realism and the physics side of the game. Its effect will be seen on how real the background is in terms of natural movement, like with trees and rain and wind. It also functions with large yet independent movement of groups as seen in massive armies, and gives added realism to explosions and basic destruction.”

In short I would look at sites that are independant from both sony and microsoft for more accurate comparisons – sony and microsoft tend to scew information to what they want you to hear, not the reality.

  36. winner:

Spidey, it’s true, PS3 cannot handle 360 games as well as 360 can handle PS3 games. The proof is in all of the multiplatform games out there. I.E Orange Box, F.E.A.R., The Club, Burnout Paradise, DMC4. All of the 360 lead games look a lot better on 360, whereas the PS3 lead games look nearly identical on 360.

Just face the fact and move on, PS3 cannot handle 360 ports as well as 360 can handle PS3 ports.

  37. Spideydog:

No problem man, I will “face the facts” because you simply say they are… If you can point me to a non-microsoft information source that confirms your opinion, I will give you some credibility, (proven un-biased source) but at the moment, it is simply opinion that you are giving us.

I have F.E.A.R on both PC and PS3 and the only main difference’s I see, is the PC version is darker and more anti-alias (and yes I have a high end PC) This is opinion of course ;-)

  38. Arvis:

    Winner,

I hate to say it, but your statements are fundamentally flawed, because: a)They are not truisms, as there exceptions. Oblivion looks and plays better on the PS3. b)You seem to have foreknowledge of games yet to be released, assuming that this trend will continue. You can’t say for a fact that it will.

I think a more reasonable way of getting across your point would be to say that “developers can handle porting from the PS3 to the 360 better than they can handle porting the other way around.”

    -Arvis

  39. kevin:

arvis – oblivion BARELY looks better on the ps3 and that’s with a YEAR of extra development time. The only difference being clearer textures on the ps3, which Bethesda already stated would have been done on the 360 given more time. Plays better? think again. Even so, ONE title against the vast majority looking better on the 360 kinda underscores winner’s post.

  40. hater:

You might want to check in on unreal tourny 3. The publishers did say that 360 wont ever be able to handle the graphic power as the PS3 nor the space version.
