PS3 beats Xbox 360 in monthly sales again - Wii and DS way ahead
By Dave Parrack
The official NPD data for March is due out later this week, but as usual, industry analyst Michael Pachter has got the scoop first, and predicted the sales figures. While the Nintendo Wii and DS are still dominating spectacularly, the big news is the Playstation 3 beating the Xbox 360 in monthly sales yet again.
According to GameDaily, Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter has forecast his predictions for the March sales totals, and it makes for some interesting reading, even for those not involved in the fanboy wars.
Regardless of which console you own, and company you support, the good news for gamers, and the industry they support, is that sales are up across the board. Pachter is predicting a 47% increase from $579 million to $850 million for the month.
As for individual consoles, it’s no surprise to see the Nintendo Wii once again dominating sales, with sales of 700,000 units being predicted. The Nintendo DS, subject to speculation over a new model, is on a par with its bigger brother, with sales forecast again thought to be around the 700k mark.
The battle for second place amongst the home consoles continues to hot up, with the PS3 once again beating the Xbox 360, carrying on the trend of 2008 so far, despite the emergence of an Xbox style Red Ring of Death.
There’s not much between the two though, with Pachter predicting the PS3 selling 365,000 units for the month, with the Xbox 360 managing 310,000.
This does however mean that the Xbox 360 has been beaten by the ageing PS2, on sales of around 320,000. The PSP is again not far behind, although being whipped by the DS, with sales of 300,000.
Good news also for those gamers and desperate parents in the US who are still waiting on supplies of the Wii to catch up with demand. Pachter believes that Nintendo is starting to balance the supply and demand issues, and will up the amount of consoles available in America ready for the launch of Wii Fit in May.
Last but not least, is the note that the video game sector is “appearing highly recession-resistant,” and with April welcoming Grand Theft Auto IV and Mario Kart Wii, the industry seems more than healthy.
That is at least something we can agree is a good thing.

So “PS3 beats XBOX 360 in monthly sales,” - yet the first sentence:”The official NPD data for March is due out later this week, but as usual, industry analyst Michael Pachter has got the scoop first, and predicted the sales figures.”
So the numbers haven’t been released yet - any one track Michael Pachter’s other prophecies? Yeah . . he called the Wii a “fad” about 1 year ago. Michael pachter will post a column and get facts incorrect in his column. This guy is a moron, and I don’t understand how he has his job with such high profile.
Any ways - PS3 owners you have a lot of ground to make up, beating xbox by 10K consoles in two months straight means you will have another 20 years before you pass Xbox in total sales in the US. So merely beating xbox in small amounts doesn’t mean much - it’s actually pretty bad for you.
April 15th, 2008
Crapbox is going down! talk your trash all you want while you still can
April 15th, 2008
erm johnathon how is it pretty bad for us?? we have exclusives such as gt5, little big planet, resistance 2, mgs4 etc. how is that bad? you get wash out halo seres because the designers cant make anymore.
April 15th, 2008
Johnathan, you’re assuming that both consoles will be on the market for the same amount of time. If Sony has their way, the PS3 will still be selling in another 7 years. If Microsoft continues their own trend, we’ll have the Xbox NEXT in three years tops. Hopefully, though, this is not the case.
April 15th, 2008
Numbers like these don’t mean anything really when they are so close. What does matter to developers and gamers is how many games are being sold on each system. The Wii may sell the most consoles but they sell the least games!
April 15th, 2008
Arvis - if you think that PCs progress so slowly that 7 years is a correct amount of time for a life-cycle of a console . . . well, I hope you enjoy your Pentium III, cause that’s what you’re probably running.
7 years is way too long - but hey, you’ve only got 13 years left until you pass up Xbox if that’s the case.
GT5 . . . not as good as Forza, sorry. Resistance 2 . . . haha resistance 1 was what, an 85% game? not a 94% game like GOW, not a 96% game like Halo 3. . . you got crap when it comes to FPS (except for COD4 - but then you have your crappy PS3 network and not the superior Xbox live, but I guess you get what you pay for). MGS4 . . . sorry, never liked those games - but the 100,000 people who do, you’ll sell consoles to, good job.
Hey JD, you mentioned all your exclusives, but you left off Lair! How could you forget Lair! That game is AWESOME!!! Shake that controller!
morons.
April 15th, 2008
“exclusives such as gt5, little big planet, resistance 2, mgs4″
I don’t care about any of those games, and while I do like my racing sims, Forza is far superior to the Gran Turismo series.
God bless the PS3, but the truth of the matter is the games sell the system, and until Sony starts giving us games we actually WANT to play instead of telling us what games we SHOULD play, they are going to lag behind the 360’s impressive game library.
April 15th, 2008
Jonathan, so Forza is better than GT5 huh? really? I guess that’s why proffessional race car drivers use Forza to train with right? O snap, thats GT5 they use. And you want to pull the Lair card? Ok, how about the “lost Odessy” card, that game sucks balls, or maybe the viva pinata card? you fanboys suck .
April 15th, 2008
Wait forget it, nevermind all that, there’s no point arguing with you, your name links to a pro republican site, ya thats right, we’ll trust your opinions, you who voted in the world’s biggest monster, you who only know American made products, you who eat sleep and breath hate, ya, you’re a real hero.
April 15th, 2008
Also, anyone who bases their opinion of games, gaming, etc on review score ratings is seriously in need of a free thinking mind.
April 15th, 2008
Jonathan,
Interesting points you make, but your math is off and the name calling obscures what you’re trying to get across. If Microsoft stops selling the 360 in three years, but the PS3 keeps selling for 4 years after that, then surpassing the 360s total sales wouldn’t be much of a problem. My Pentium III was able to calculate that, no problem.
And you’re right, 7 years is way too long for a console to keep selling competetively. I mean, look at the PS2, nobody buys that any more…
Although, playing the Critic Ranking Percentage game is fun! Of course, something tells me that although Forza 2 is an 89% and Gran Turismo 3 is a 95%, you’d still enjoy Forza 2 more. So really… what do the review percentages actually MEAN?
Anyways, not that you care, but it might be of benefit to you personally if you look into some non-Microsoft gaming products. There’s a bunch of cool stuff out there. I know the 360 pretty much has you covered, but it wouldn’t hurt to try new things every once in a while. You never know what you could discover!

April 15th, 2008
Gerry,
Politics? Come on, take it easy. Gaming is about fun. A hobby. Don’t make this personal.
And Lost Odyssey is actually quite beautiful, at least aesthetically. I haven’t really had much time with the battle system.

April 15th, 2008
johnathon, i did miss of lair, which is an exclusive with ps3, your point being?
If you’ve ever played on resistance you’ll know its not crap, xbox online is totally overraterd ot to mention expensive for exaclty the sam experience on ps3 which is free, gt5 pwns forza, which has inferiror graphivs, gameplay and menu and your xbox is an underfunded box, it does exactly what it says on the name. Good luck with your american crap. i trust the japanese technology 100000 times over american shit. Microsoft were never good at making software let alone hardware. leave technology to the professionals
April 15th, 2008
That’ll show ‘em, JD. *rolls eyes*
Seriously, I don’t understand why people can’t just be polite.
April 15th, 2008
@ Arvis, Lair was pretty good aesthetically, doesn’t make it a good game.
But you’re right I should have left politics out of this, however when someone like Jonathon comes here linking his name to that site and saying the things he says, it’s hard not to call a spade when I see one.
But I disgres, you are right, and I should be more polite in my mannerisms.
Happy Gaming to all. (except fanboys, I wish nothing but hard times for fanboys, and that’s why I give it to them)
April 15th, 2008
For what most people use a PC for, a Pentium 3 would actually be more than enough power.
And MGS, while it’s a game I don’t like, has well over 100,000 fans, the series has sold millions and will indeed move hardware.
If you want to talk sales figures, after a year less time on the market, PS3 has almost caught up in terms of worldwide sales. I’d be shocked if the 360 lead isn’t completely erased by the end of this year.
And using game ratings in your argument? It seems all the 360 has are hundreds of average FPS. I understand Halo is popular but I fucking hate that shitty game as much as I hate having to pay to play online.
April 15th, 2008
@ Arvis, I respect you, i really do, how can you be so polite with such a dimwit?
I am not a fanboy (of any sort!) but it really annoys me when someone acts like such an idiot. Does anyone realise the xbox came out earlier than the ps3? I mean really, does anyone get that? What was the xbox meant to do, sit there and wait for the ps3 to be released and THEN start releasing games? No, i think not. To me then, it seems perfect sense that the xbox will have better games on its system, developers know it better etc. It will change though. The PS3 IS getting better games, thats why I own one. Not that I dislike the xbox, oh no, I like it, but honestly, we really dont need some guy forcing his OPINIONS down our throat. Thats why I find it amazing how you can be so polite
Oh and as an afterthought. GT5 kicks Forza’s ass
April 15th, 2008
I just think it’s funny that “www.drudgereport.com,” a site that links news articles from all over the world, is somehow a “republican” site.
According to Metacritic.com (conglomeration of all review sites) - GT5 *(prologue - that means the game is only half of what it should be and that you have to pay for the second half) only get’s a congloberate rating of 80%. Forza gets a 90 from the same conglomerations.
Gerry the race car drivers are driving GT5 only because of Sony Marketing - there’s a game informer article showing a race car driver playing Forza when forza was released, and MS claimed the same thing you’re trying to claim - now you’re just as bad as the Vole.
Arvis you’re probably not the typical 15 year old sony jerk out there that has drank the sony koolaid, so you’re probably pretty cool. I guess the reason I’m not obviously interested in Sony’s trojan horse is exactly due to that. Instead of the superior format winning, BD won because sony flooded the market with the more expensive lackluster format. Before anyone responds with how great BD is - just remember: HD DVD always had PIP support. HD DVD always had upgradable firmware. HD DVD always had internet available content. BD is just now getting those . . . yeah, space is all BD had.
Also guys - how bout those 20 minute installs I’ve been reading about for PS3 games? and 5gbs of space per game install? Good thing you have 80GBs . . that means you can install 16 games before you have to delete stuff . . . wow. I think I have about 30 xbox games, and only about 1GB is dedicated to game content.
As for PS2 still selling - yes, it does quite nicely. However, MS didn’t compete until a year and a half into PS2 - MS is raising the bar and not letting sony bleed money out of people for the next 7 years on an old console / old format / old stuff. Xbox 360 / 720 = new hotness.
Gerry - it really sounds like you’re the one who “hates” here.
April 15th, 2008
Jonathan,
Compelling arguments. Your point of view makes alot more sense to me when you take your time to explain it.
As a huge Gran Turismo fan, I know that Forza is a good series, especially for car enthusiasts. But, you probably shouldn’t compare a full Forza title to GT5 Prologue, which is basically one huge demo (hence the relatively low review average).
Plus, if you like Forza, you should at least be a LITTLE curious about all the neat stuff they’re working on for the full GT5. Any car lover would be excited.
Not to mention that I am a big proponent of trying games for yourself before passing judgment.
Kevin will tell you that I’ve already bugged him about this, but it’s silly to look at JUST the positive or JUST the negative aspects of something. Keeping that in mind, I just wanted to mention a few things:
HD DVD had its advantages, yes. But it still had a much smaller capacity, and the max rate of data transfer was half of Blu Ray’s max. And when you want a medium that will allow alot of content at the highest possible level of visual fidelity, those are pretty big disadvantages.
Look at it this way: if you care about HD viewing that much, then PIP support, firmware, and online content are all things Blu Ray has now, so the outcome of the HD War actually leaves you at an advantage, since HD DVD would never have been able to upgrade it’s lower capacity and transfer rate to match. In simpler terms: Blu Ray was able to get rid of its disadvantages, whereas HD DVD was sort of stuck with theirs. In the end, the consumer ends up with all the advantages.
As for those consumers stuck with HD DVD, that sucks and all, but no one can exclusively blame Blu Ray for that. Both formats are to blame for the HD War. If one or the other never existed, nobody would care and we would have just started with the happy standard we’ve just now finally achieved.
Last thing: the installs on the PS3 really aren’t an issue, in any way. The faster loading times are nice, and only one game so far (DMC4) has required 5gbs to install. Personally, when I’m done with a game that needed an install, I just erase the install data. It’s not an inconvenience at all, and I actually prefer it to long load times in-game.
Last last thing: You have 30 Xbox games?? I’m jealous, I can’t afford that many games!
-Arvis
April 15th, 2008
Jonathan, you fail to realise that when you go around saying, “sony jerk out there that has drank the sony koolaid,” you are doing nothing but put yourself in exact same category as them, only at the other end of the spectrum. Calling people fanboys for liking a particularly system is ironically a clear indication of rabid fanboyism. And your game percentage argument is fundamentally flawed, due to fact that games are based purely on opinion, there’s no way you can state Xbox 360 has better games as fact.
And I agree with Arvis on the Blu-ray issue.
April 15th, 2008
this is indicative of this 360-hating site. very cool of you to celebrate the ps3 outselling the 360…. BEFORE THE NUMBERS ARE RELEASED. wth..? are you THAT desperate to make the 360 look bad. It’s even funnier you addressing the 360 being outsold by the ps2, when it’s TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS LESS. Oh, and how is the ps3 sales compared to the ps2? Gerry - you are waaay of your mind. Even the most ardent fanboy agrees the measly 300 physics parameters of GT games PALE in comparison to Forza’s 9,000+ (yes, THOUSAND). If you think reviews are not credible, then you don’t know this industry. EVERY SINGLE reviewer has Forza trumping GT games in every single category. Yet you, somehow, know more than all of them and the gamers who give Forza the crown. it’s funny you claim people use GT games to “train” when ONE driver in the entire existence of the GT series said he used it once….to learn the track layout. NOT for physics accuracy. What kind of force propels you BACKWARDS when you collide with another automobile anyway? not being a physics major, it may be new to me. hint: doens’t exist. Arvis - GT has nothing that forza doesn’t have and waaaaay better. GT prides itself on the insane amounts of cars offered in the game…only later do they tell you that most of them are redundant. GT4 had over 40 Nissan Skylines, which were all but identical in handling. it’s uselss fluff to get the fanboys frothing. nothing else. I have a hd dvd player for my 360 and don’t feel “stuck” at all. In fact there are over 100+ movies avail for hd dvd and with the sales going on, i can really clean up. The installs ARE the issue. the only positive thing is not having to sit for 15 seconds (at least on the 360) while the level loads. I have never seen a game with over 20 minutes of load times, total. So, ps3 gamers get to use up space on the hdd, sit thru an 20-30 install with little to no benefit. there would have to 80 levels loads to equal ONE install on the ps3. bleh…. Gerry - you’re an idiot if you really think bush is the worlds’ biggest monster. but i’m glad you said it; it gives much insight into your (lack of) intelligence.
April 15th, 2008
rob - the attach ratio of 360 owners is very high. The average reviews from industry professionals of 360 is also high. What more proof do you want that the 360 has the better games? i’ll bet you would think different if the ps3 was in the 360’s place.
April 15th, 2008
Oh man, Kevin, you were doing so good for a while. Don’t let the haters rile you up man.
You’re comparing a next-gen Forza to a last-gen GT. Come on, be fair, man.
If you like Forza so much better, then play the crap out of it! Racing sims rock. Personally, I hate it when people complain about Forza and GT because they’re “too realistic.” ARGH!
Also, GT is aimed primarily at the Japanese car audience, and since the Skyline is ridiculously popular over there, it makes sense that they would include many different versions of the car. There is a reason the GT series has had more commercial success than Forza.
Also, if you’re willing to say that you don’t feel “stuck” with HD DVD, you’re basically pulling the plug on your own credibility. If you cared enough about HD movies, you would want to own them in the future, an option not available with the HD DVD format. There’s no point in defending it or proclaiming its merits at this point Kevin. No true HD enthusiast would stick with HD DVD now. It just doesn’t make sense, and I know that, objectively, you are aware of this.
You have valid opinions and great points to make, Kevin. Just try and be a little more calm and reasonable.
And now that I finally got to talk to you, I can go home.
-Arvis
April 15th, 2008
Oh c’mon! I can pick a dreamcast up for 20 bucks but they don’t sell in those numbers. The PS2 is a solid console with great games is clearly not ready to be retired just yet.
“there would have to 80 levels loads to equal ONE install on the ps3.”
Play DMC4 2 or 3 times and there are your 80 level loads, but really we need someone to time the load times to work that one out…
Honestly, I’ve really never seen the big deal with the HDD installs, its something I PRESUMED would be a part of the ‘next gen’ due to thier faster access that optical media, I’m also a PC gamer so I am used to installs anyway.
In fact I am HOPING GTA4 will REQUIRE a HDD install for the PS3 (and give you 360 owners the option to do it. We have to look out for the arcade owners!) so the data can be ’streamed’ alot faster. My only annoyance is that it takes 20 minutes (for DMC), I can install/copy a full 8gig to my PC in less time. At, if my hdd ever gets full, ill pull it, add it to my PC and go buy a cheap 200gig sata for the PS3.
Some of you guys need to seriously hit the gym, and get onto the ultimate fighter on spike. Ultimate Fighter season 562 Team PS3 vs. Team 360. I would even order a PPV.
April 15th, 2008
. Before anyone responds with how great BD is - just remember: HD DVD always had PIP support. HD DVD always had upgradable firmware. HD DVD always had internet available content. BD is just now getting those . . . yeah, space is all BD had.

Where was the hi-def Audio support for HDDVD?
do I want kick ass surround sound? or do I want to be able to watch two things at once with PIP?
as far as HD and installations go…
how about some Xbox’s not even having an HD to install on? When devs create games, they must create for the lowest common denominator… so as far as the games are concerned, xbox might as well not even have a hard drive.
its fine you enjoy your xbox as much as I enjoy my ps3, but you were the first one to come out flaming away so don’t expect any sympathy or respect from your peers.
But then again, what’s a forum with out the forum idiot?
April 15th, 2008
Whats the problem if microsoft want to release the next box in 3 years? it would obviously be far more advanced than 360 and ps3, i mean how long do you think a consoles life should be? 5 years or just under seems fine to me in 3 years time i’ll be more than happy to buy the next xbox, although i spose alot of you ps3 launch buyers had to sell your grans gold teeth to get your console so you probably do want 10 years out of it.each to their own, and those with any braincells and liking for decent online play to the xbox!

I honestly don’t know why people keep bragging about how AWESOME XBL is. I happen to prefer Dedicated Servers over Peer to Peer games.
Between my PC and PS3 I have all the gaming bases I need covered. Heck If I wait till next year I’ll be able to play Gears of War 2 with more levels for less money and free online.
I had to trade in my 360, 3 separate times with an in store trade in policy through EB. (I take very good care of my belongings) Just so happens that I prefer, reliable, free, and dedicated over unstable, billable and peer to peer.
All the games Jonathan mentioned in his post that are “Superior” on 360 are a laughing stock compared to the same games on PC. Oh right except for Halo! Guess that’s why the inferior version of CoD4 outranks your sacred Halo on the monthly XBL stats.
April 15th, 2008
No one cares, the 360 has the better games, the better online, the better system, the better controller, HD movie rentals, netflix coming, and the hardcore gaming base, etc. etc. The ps3 has a blue ray movie player, want to buy 30-35 dollar blue ray movies go get a ps3, want the best gaming get a 360. The numbers don’t matter right now on sales, when you consider many ps3s are bought for hd movie players to begin with (Until the blue ray players get cheaper). Look at the attach rates of software…Xbox 360 is KILLING the ps3. That’s what developers look for!
Seriously…
big exclusive sellers!-
sony=metal gear, and grand tourismo… um nothing huge after this.
360=Gears of War, Halo, Mass Effect, Bioshock, Ninja Gaiden II, Forza 2, Fable, Lost Odyssey, Crackdown, etc, etc.
April 15th, 2008
I know this is off topic, but in Australia XBL doesn’t have the movie downloads, and with no BD drive in the pipeline, we’ve got no HD movie options for Xbox.
April 15th, 2008
. I think its funny when people start comparing controllers, then trying to justify that a console is better because of their own opinion about the controller. Of course the 360 is going to sell less console than the ps3 ,its been out for a while, ps3 and the wii are fairly new. there are a lot of people in my opinion that have TOO MUCH PRIDE, and want to make sure their console is the best, so they bash bash and bash. i dont like racing sims anymore because sometimes they have too much going on in the game that takes the fun out of it. i play games to have a good time not to sit and bash on another console due to jealousy. and yes its jealousy, been there done that. i would try to find the slightest flaw about the other console and bash on it all day. then i realized thats its hell of retarded. unless you are a little kid, the whole ” mine is better than yours ” crap is pretty childish. play your game and enjoy it.

JONATHAN must be stupid fat guy who lives in mama’s basement and plays crapbox all day and night. its over 50 k lead over xbox and this is only for US. Around the world, PS3 is leading over 250 K a month. Now that’s growing even bigger and bigger. 7 yrs is not long for console life. And ps2 is selling more than 360. Get your facts straight otherwise it just proves that you are stupid.

John says, “Blue is my favorite colour.”
Joey says, “My favorate colour is green.”
John says, “I’m not going to be your friend because Blue is better than Green.”
Joey says, “So what, Green is better because it is both Blue and Yellow… Therefore, you Fail!”
What’s the point of this exercise? Answer. Nothing. Go play your games, some of which haven’t been released yet, and shut up.
April 16th, 2008
Did the 360 have another shortage this month? I guess Microsoft has to think of another excuse. Microsoft sold us a piece of shit console that can’t even handle the greatest games created. There are so many great games to choose from, but only 4 different SKU’s with high failure rates to pick and choose from. Way to go MS!! I can’t wait for the Xbox 720. Microsoft won’t even bother testing it knowing idiots will buy it even if it fails. Way to lower the bar guys.
April 16th, 2008
@ Kevin
They are just reporting what others have said… the “Professionals” and their “Speculations”
But seriously.. for the last coupla months the PS3 HAS been outselling the 360… whats wrong with that???
Some say that the 360 has a bigger games collection than the PS3… well isnt that obvious?? OFCOURSE it has more games.. it was released a year earlier…
And people call the PS3 “not a games console” because they are trying to put in DVr and other capabilities… WHATS WRONG WITH THAT??
Isnt the 360 pushing for the online content downloads??? Their deal with netflix where you can rent movies via the LIVE??? Its a good thing that the consoles are becoming more than just a games machine… because not everyone can afford to buy “everything” so its a good deal that the companies are trying to add extra features in their consoles…
And the 360 and the PS3 both have a lotta crappy games… from the glitches of Perfect Dark to the dissappointment of Kameo… to the absurdity of Lair…
And with the criticism of the PSN.. are you telling me that LIVE was perfect when it came out??? its not even perfect after all these years.. how can you expect PSN to suddenly be better than LIVE?? Give it some time.. and Im sure it can be a worthy competitor of the PSN…
And you cant measure a console by how many units its selling… because Sony lost money from the first batches of the PS3s… and though the 360 sold a lot of units… most were faulty and many people bought more than 1 360… (not the same with the PS3)
And yet people still havent answered by question…
What happens to the “Elite” owners who are stuck with a Hd Dvd drive??? and how can you be “nex gen” if you are still using previous gen technology?? (the DvD player and DvD games)
Meanwhile the “novelty” Wii.. which was supposed to be “dead” and “obsolete” after 1 year is kicking ass… even if it is obsolete today.. Nintendo has made enough profits to come up with another console in a year… perhaps this time they will focus on a better control system and some newer games than Mario and Zelda and Metroid Prime… though Brawl is still cool…

gerry - if you truly think gt trumps forza in realism; 1. you don’t have a driver’s license 2. you’ve never spent ANY time driving at high speeds, or 3. you haven’t played both games. Face it; the gamers have spoken. the reviewers have spoken. Forza is the new king of console sims. GT has a loooong way to go to catch up. and prolly won’t w/o automotive professionals helping. GT as great for it’s day, but eventually almost everything gets improved upon.

arvis - shut up with the calm and reasonable b.s. You condescending tone is getting on my nerves. Just because you spew b.s and lies and do it in a calm tone, does NOT lend cred to you silliness. 300 will never trump 9,000. Kaz is a game maker. Forza was created with the help of engineers from Team Ferrari and Toyo Tires. Even you can’t be dumb enough to think Kaz knows more about the reproduction of accurate physics than automotive engineers. Kaz would be the first to say he doesn’t. sorry, arvis, if you don’t like my tone, stop with the lies. thanks.

arvis- for $50 for a hd player, i don’t feel “stuck” at all. Hell, i spent more than that on dinner on sunday. Yes, it’s obsolete, but for $50 and $20hd movies, i think it’s great. I guess i should feel “stuck” with me colecovision, atari and vextrex, but i don’t.
April 16th, 2008
Erm kevin are you comparing forza to 1. last gen gran turismo or 2. gt5 PROLOGUE (shortened version of the real thing) you cant compare a game which is complete to either a last gen title or a cut down version of the proper one. We might as well compare the size of the iraqi army to the u.s army
April 16th, 2008
jd -the point is the physics engine. GT4 peeked at 300 and kaz has made NO mention of increase in parameters to GT5 or prologue.
April 16th, 2008
God, I love both the Gran Turismo series and the Forza series, and I’ve played every title extensively. Anyone who says GT5 is superior to Forza 2 is absolutely absurd, if nothing, for the simple fact that in GT5, the best way to take tight corners is to bank off the wall or another car–without penalty, much as it has been in the previous titles. That does not count as “simulation” in my book. Having said that, I love the GT series for other reasons. it’s cleaner and more organized, and has a lot of cool obscure cars. But when it comes to down to realistic physics, tuning, etc, Gran Turismo 5 is still in the stone age and more of a novelty racer.
I doubted Forza at first as well, but I’m a total convert.
April 16th, 2008
kevin, what do you mean when you say “peaked at 300″
And that’s a serious question, not being rude or anything, I just don’t get it, what do you mean?
April 16th, 2008
gerry- sure. Kaz stated GT4 uses “up to 300 physics parameters”. Not sure what he meant by that, but 300 is the highest number he has ever stated. I think Gamespot said it best when they called GT4 “bumpercar physics”. it’s a very accurate description.
April 16th, 2008
So you make comment on who has the higher numbers, but have no knowledge as to what they mean??
April 16th, 2008
I’d have to say that PS3 is hurting real bad to be selling so close to the XBOX at this stage of the game. I agree that games are vital and PS3 simply doesn’t have anything that appeals to me….I only play multiplayer and XBOX Live is clearly the superior service to play multiplayer…..it’s a clear cut choice for serious gamers. Wii and Ps2 command the casual nancy boy gamer market…the Ps3 seems to appeal only to those who have had the XBOX for 2 years now and are ready to buy something new. Can’t imagine having a PS3 without a 360 alongside! That’s just nuts!
April 16th, 2008
Oh and Forza 2 is hands down the superior racing experience with unmatched on-line racing, live feeds, auction house paint jobs, customization etc etc. Gears will steal the Fall from MGS like Halo did last year so….not a bright future if you only own the $ony….
April 16th, 2008
okay… Forza is better than GT5… SO WHAT!!!
What about the most hyped game of 2007???
Halo 3??? guess what?? Call of Duty 4 sold more copies in the 360 than Halo 3….
Thats gotta hurt right??? I hate it when people say the 360 is better because it had Halo 3…
I am a fan of Halo 1 and 2… but 3 was a total letdown… short Single Player campaign… and nothing “Revolutionary” in the multiplayer mode…
Even COD 4 got more votes for “Best Multiplayer Game” than Halo 3…
And save your criticism for GT5 AFTER it is released… anything about it now is just pissing in th wind… if it is a terrible game.. then we will find out AFTER is it released… speculation serves no purpose…
April 16th, 2008
spideydog - hey, stay out of this. what i meant was i don’t know if EACH car uses UP TO 300 or if DIFFERENT cars use less or more depending on make and model. (ie; car’s with varying types of steering/braking systems use different parameters) next time; just don’t type. I’m compeletely aware of what physics parameters are and how they are used and calculated. just not sure specifically what direction kaz was babbling about. sony’s developers are great at being very ambiquous with their claims, because most are lies.
April 16th, 2008
ps…oh and just for clarification, Dan Greenawalt (turn ten) stated EACH car in Forza uses OVER 9,000 physics parameters.

Kevin, if you’re happy with your HD-DVD drive you must be ecstatic over your VHS player.
P.S. Driving games are for queers.
April 16th, 2008
Kevin,
I thought we had something special!
*cries into his keyboard*
Seriously though, I never meant to be condescending, so I apologize if I was. But I honestly don’t know what I lied about. Enlighten me?
-Arvis
April 16th, 2008
could we have a link Matty???
XD @ pfreak…. but I like driving games… just not “simulation” ones… they take themselves WAAY too seriously..
April 16th, 2008
arvis - you lied about the upcharge in console prices due to bluray. You said it was a “common misconception”, which is utter b.s. by sony’s own mouth who stated $600 is a “value becuase it has a bluray player in it”. Pointing the finger DIRECTLY to bluray as the reason for the increase. it’s sad when you lie so much you forget what lies you’ve told. you also claimed gt had so many nissan skylines becuase they’re so popular in japan… what’s the reasoning for the other redundant cars? are they ALL popular. No, the reality is; Kaz puts it in there for bragging rights on the number of cars, while sacrificing realism and physics. do a google of GT4’s car list and count the redunancies. It’s insanely unnecessary. *waits for the denial*.
April 16th, 2008
here’s one area Arvis:
“Blu Ray was able to get rid of its disadvantages, whereas HD DVD was sort of stuck with theirs. In the end, the consumer ends up with all the advantages.”
Blu-Rays only Disadvantage in my book is that is cost way too much. Guess what prices have done since HD DVD dropped out? that’s right, they’ve gone up. Sony’s got to pay for a shiny “sony” emblem on your BD player, so they have to charge you more. . . Sorry - consumer = loser.
April 16th, 2008
Oh - and Xbox 360 / 720 = new hotness
April 16th, 2008
Awww come on guys I miss the ole 360 sold 3800 units in Japan last month. So now that they have a slight win in north america all the paid off talking heads can move on from Japan.
please bring it back. Now that Sony has made deals that killed the HD dvd camp a slight bump in sales is to be expected as the HD dvd fans come on board but bluray will still hit the wall after the early adopters all settle in. You guys like numbers, how many standard dvd drives were sold last year? and how many bluray drives? how long before bluray reaches full adoption? and how long before the industry upgrades us again with the NEXT great upgrade to pick our pockets?
I feel lost without my Japan 360 news
April 16th, 2008
Kevin,
Oh, ok, I get what you mean now. The Blu Ray debate was in another thread (I addressed it in that thread, btw), that’s why I was confused. Just so we’re clear, I misunderstood you on the subject. Apologies.
If multiple cars isn’t your thing, that’s fine, but one of my favorite things about GT2 was that I had 5 different Dodge Vipers in my garage. I thought that was pretty sweet.
And who is Kaz?
-Arvis
April 16th, 2008
Jonathan,
Blu Ray prices in my area (and on Amazon, Walmart.com, Ebay, etc) have all stayed the same. That sucks that the prices in your area have shifted. I’m sorry.
-Arvis
April 16th, 2008
arvis - kaz yamauchi is GT’s creator. dude….really? c’mon….
April 16th, 2008
arvis -you’re lucky br players have stayed the same. in NA sony raised the prices of their players by $20 the day after hd dvd bowed out. Mercenary, not suprising, from sony. this is the type of things we can expect from sony now they have no competition in the format market. they are going to stick it to the consumers as long as they can.
April 16th, 2008
*embarassed*
I guess I should pay more attention to the people who make all these games I play…
I was thinking, “I know he doesn’t mean Kaz Hirai…” *laughs*
As for Blu Ray, I actually haven’t paid any attention to the prices on the actual players, just the discs/movies. Although I can’t say I’m surprised Sony went there, considering the uphill battle they’ve been fighting the last year and a half. Still sucks, though, you’d think they’d keep the prices steady to stimulate format adoption.
-Arvis
April 16th, 2008
Blu Ray may have won the battle but they are going to lose the war. Downloadable media will eventually saturate the consumer video market, making Sony’s proprietary format moot… probably within a decade.
Also, there was a clear advantage switching to DVD from VHS; the same “necessity” isn’t quite so clear for the average consumer, who, for the most part, is satisfied with the sound and picture quality available with standard DVD.
Look at the monstrous success of iTunes, or the xbox live marketplace which has HD downloads.
Like I said, the days of going to the store to pick up the “latest” release are limited once you can obtain them by sitting in the comfort of your own home and clicking a few buttons.
Anyone trying to defend blu ray or HD dvd is short-sighted.
April 16th, 2008
I think you’re way off creamed corn - if multiple set-top boxes are already on their way to the consumer by this coming holiday season - how many more will be available in two years? 3 years?
I think downloadable content and set-top Hard drives is the mainstream future in 4-6 years. BD is a huge embarrasing failure . . hey, kind of like Minidiscs . . . remember that horrible format Sony somehow convinced us was good? Yeah, a non-digital CD . . . good thinking.
Since we all enjoy comparing Sony to Xbox (which I do enjoy) - how come no sony people conceed all the ways your system sucks? Such as
What does the PS3 NOT have:
1. Rumble pad controller in package (unless you buy separate for $55!)
2. No user setable in game music - I can load any music I want on my xbox, and all during Games.
3. A stable worldwide network with no lag (sure you have to pay for it . . . but you pay for what you get - free things always suck)
4. HD cables
What does the PS3 have that Xbox doesn’t?
1. Broken version of Orange Box
2. Lair
3. GT5 - but no Forza, so this is a moot point
4. Long mandator install times (20 minutes to 1 hr for DMC4)
5. Wi-fi (got us there)
6. Broken slow fps version of Madden 07
7. 1 year warranty (oops, xbox has a 3 year)
8. the sony label in the corner
9. It’s shiny
What does the Xbox have that the PS3 doesn’t?
1. Good Games
nuff said.

Kevin:
For trying to make out your such a smart fella…., you say “gerry- sure. Kaz stated GT4 uses “up to 300 physics parameters”. Not sure what he meant by that, but 300 is the highest number he has ever stated.”
You use “Kaz’s” statement as your evidence but have no idea as to what he actually means, in what context….
Next time, YOU dont type, and we wont be forced to accept your opinion at the possiblity of not being as “Smart” as you. Fool.
April 16th, 2008
OMG Jonathan
You think xbox360 is good because it has a 3 yr warranty…… There is a reason why it has a 3 yr warranty idiot.
At least ALL ps3 units in ALL flavours have real HD capability (HDMI)
I have played online ps3 games for some time and have not experienced any great lag. And yes, I have played for years online PC gaming so I have something good to compare against. Neither of these I had to pay for either…so you can pay your subsciption fee if you want, and I will enjoy my PC and PS3 online gaming for FREE.
April 17th, 2008
Yeah Spideydog . . . say what you will about why we have a 3 year warranty, we have one. So I’m covered for 3 years . . . how bout you?
what’s that error 80010514 I’ve heard about? BD disk failure?
http://gamer.blorge.com/2008/04/11/ps3-gets-xbox-style-rrod-error-80010514-code-of-death/
I’m still not sure why anyone would ever buy a PS3 . . . I guess if they want a nice VHS style video player it’s a good idea.
April 17th, 2008
Hey I just wanted to say that I’m not that blown by both Forza and GT5. I’m a racing fan but I perfer the More arcade style Racing games because if I want to drive like Forza and GT5 I’ll just get in my car and rip down the Highway on the DVP at night. I prefer games like the Need for speed series and Midnight Club and anything along those lines as long as there good. Besides the arcade racers are more fun. As for those knocking Lost Odyssey you have no Idea what you are talking about. That is an amazing game and it is definately the next Final Fantasy. I don’t play thoes types of games but I decided to go outside the box of usual games I play and since I rented it I have played every night until I go to bed. That game is just amazing and I did not realize how good a turn base game could be. You really have to use stratgey instead of just attacking like regular games. No one should knock this game, NO ONE.
April 17th, 2008
Get a life Jonathan.
April 17th, 2008
CAD,
Does this mean you’re going to try Final Fantasy XIII when it comes out? People who have played both the FF series and Lost Odyssey claim that LO basically just rips everything good from FF and mixes it up a bit, which in my opinion, is totally awesome. I can’t wait to get some play time with LO myself.

NEW FRICKEN HOTNESS
April 17th, 2008
HEY DAVE PARRACK!!!
You got it wrong!! NPD figures are in, 360 beat PS3 this month!!
April 18th, 2008
Now that the figures are out it has gotton a little quite around here. So where is the new post stating the correct information. I must admit that was a good laugh. Especially when Microsoft said they also expected to loose March.
April 18th, 2008
A new article with the official NPD figures is up. I think you’ll find it was Pachter that got it wrong, not me. I only report the news.
April 18th, 2008
This site obviously doesn’t report the news. It reports rumors, and opinions.
Another big X for blorge.
Keep it up guys.
April 18th, 2008
Pachter was wrong….again… *waits for the apology and retraction of this story*. DaveP, you reported this as news in the headlines. Nothing about speculation.
April 18th, 2008
spidey - next time ASK instead of insinuate someone doesn’t know what they’re talking about. jerk. now, like i said, go away… let the grown ups talk…
April 18th, 2008
gerry - you’re the last person to tell jonathan to get a life. You haven’t been right yet.
April 18th, 2008
DaveP - you don’t report the news. The headline “PS3 Beats Xbox 360 in monthly sales again.” Is not news, it is false.
The headline should have read: “Idiot industry analyst who commonly get’s his estimates screwed up, and commonly is off by very large margins has a new wild guess. After several shots of Irish whiskey and two injections of heroin cocain mix says PS3 will beat Xbox 360″
subheadlind: “DaveP is a good journalist, so he is waiting for the official results.”
April 18th, 2008
jonathan - LMAO!! best. headline. ever.
April 18th, 2008
really tho; how does this clown keep his job? pachter’s never been right that i can think of.
April 18th, 2008
Kev,
Why do I need to ask……you were wrong…. simple. You didn’t know what “Kaz” meant by his comment, but you still used it to validate your comment.
Grown ups….?? By the tone of your posts I would only assume as with most people reading your posts, that you are a 13 yr old 360 fanboi that speaks ill of anything other than your beloved machine.. It is you that needs to grow up champ. See you in the real world when you decide to join the rest of us.
April 23rd, 2008
ahh i really do laugh at you 360 fanboys. And before you say, oh look here’s a ps3 fanboy, i damn sure aint, I own a Wii aswell as a DS, so I definately dont hate nintendo.
But i’ll tell you one thing, I hate microsoft. There is no way in hell I will ever buy a 360, heck it would only go and break on me anyway. oh no, but wait, it has a three year warranty, as kindly pointed out by johnothan
i would sure as heck hope it came with a three year warranty, infact it should come with a ten year warranty the rate they break.
And all this talk about xbox having better games, its bull. Bioshock, possibly. Gears? I’ll take resistance thanks. Halo? Biggest overated pile of crap I’ve ever seen. I mean, my mate has it. What the hell is new? Its just halo 2, with a few different maps. It isnt even in HD! Forza, owned by GT5 (even tho the main one isnt out yet!) and anything else you throw at me sure hasnt even crossed my mind.
This year, what does the 360 have? Gears 2? I’ve already said, I’ll take resistance. Fable 2? Errr nope, pile of smoking crap. banjo kazooie? I’ll have super mario galaxy
honestly, the only thing you have to your name is a good (yet expensive. found out the other day its £40 PER USER!!!!) but soon to be trumped online service, and a RROD.
Honestly, I wouldnt class myself as a fanboy, but you 360 fanboys sure do make me go on a fanboy rant.
April 23rd, 2008
spidey - just stop. you know you got owned and outclassed by butting your nose into other’s conversations. i pointed out how i was inquisitive, but that’s not good enough for you. lame. forza has over 9,000 PER CAR whereas Kaz only stated “we have up to 300 parameters in GT4″. Greenawalt had no probs with data, yet kaz is evasive. face it; forza is the crown holder. congrats, i didn’t think ps3 fanboys could get any sillier…i was wrong.
