PS3 update v2.30 now available: new store interface, adds audio abilities

PS3 update v2.30 now available: new store interface, DTS-HD audio abilitiesThe famed v2.30 update for the PS3 is now available, allowing the Playstation Network Store to live as an application on the PS3 instead of working through the browser.

The Playstation Network store has so far been a mess of an effort. The original implementation was sluggish, ugly, and far from optimized to work with the PS3 and its controller. Early this morning, Sony finally unleased a better (not browser-based) version of the company’s digital boutique.

We gave the new store a test run, which officially launched today as part of the v2.30 update. The interface was snappier, more responsive, and much more pleasant visually — as expected. The X-button worked as an "enter" key, and the O-button took us back a "screen" no matter where we were. That’s what the O-button should do in everything that works on the PS3 (and it finally does it properly in the Network Store too)!

Overall, the experience is very pleasant in comparison to our memories of the old store, but the digital boutique needs more and better content, a reason to spend money on something other than Warhawk and Flow expansion packs.

The update also enables the console to access DTS-HD master Audio and DTS-HD High Resolution Audio on certain Blu-ray discs, says PC World, strengthening the device’s appeal as an entertainment centerpiece instead of a dedicated console.
