Slimmer, cooler, better Sony PS3 destined for August

By Jonathan Schlaffer

Slimmer, cooler, better Sony PS3 destined for AugustThere is a revision coming to the PS3 at some point later this year but the time frame remains an enigma.  But, now it is believed to be coming in August with new, cooler running Cell and RSX graphic chips.  The PS3 hasn’t even reached the "break even" point for Sony yet.

If and when the revised PS3 comes out, the only way it can reach the "break even" point is to include the newer (smaller) RSX and Cell chips; according to Engadget.  Doing so will allow the company to produce more chips per wafer and will allow the PS3 to be more power efficient and run cooler.

Analysts say that Sony is selling the PS3 at a loss right now and say that we could see the new PS3 as early as August but don’t be surprised if it takes until November before it hits the market.

With the new chips, there may also be a redesign in order with some pointing towards a "Slim PS3" much like what Sony did with the PS2.  A larger hard drive is also not out of order as well as a few other improvements; perhaps Yellow Dog Linux preinstalled but I’m just thinking outside the box.

It’s a game console, it’s a PC, wait a minute, it’s both!  It can be both and I think doing so would just make it sell all the better.  Yes, TerraSoft sells PS3s with Yellow Dog Linux preinstalled but that’s not the same thing as getting it direct from Sony, now is it?

I do have to honestly say, my power bill is $3 higher a month since owning a PS3.

i could be wrong, but this could be the early positioning for a holiday price war. i reaaaaalllly hope so….

      FALSE!

lol yeah me too me and my bro have 60Gb ps3’s on all the time and they suck the juice. i hear the 40Gb is much more efficient but this slim model could be good for new adopters. whatever happens i hope sony get everything sorted soon ish because i think the prospect of a newer model coming out “soon” puts people off buying now.

But thats the beauty of my PS3!!!! It warms my living room in the winter!

Seriously tho, thing pumps out ALOT of heat :) I had to hook a USB fan upto it so I could push the warm air out from my TV cabinet….

Well, at least it doesn’t burn houses down like the 360 ;)

      Well, yet anywhoos…

Slimmer and cooler okay. But I’ve read these new chips aren’t any higher in performance, so not sure what you derive as “better”? Where the slim PS2 was most definately a “better” machine (integrating featuers that were extra cost), other than power and heat marginal improvements I don’t see a lot of “better” in this report.

That exactly the point my friend. PS3 outsells Xbox 360 consistently last few months and these rumours (which is exactly what it is!) start circulating on he internet. MS way of trying to put people off the PS3! don’t believe their lies!!!!

    8. SW:

Less power = less cost = better imo…. If I can save 1 cent I’m down with that….

I don’t think anyone here in thier right mind thinks the unit is getting a horsepower upgrade, that would be just plain silly. I don’t think sony wants like a 600th SKU on the shelf ;)

    9. SB:

Smaller parts cost less to produce. Therefore unless Sony decide to keep that extra money for themselves they will pass that savings onto the consumers. How are cheaper Ps3’s not better?

    10. JD:

i dont really think the ps3 gets hot while its running. it gets a little bit warm but itdistributes the heat away, and it doesnt affect the gaming performance - granted it is on a wooden floor with no carpet near. its hard to see my life without a ps3 now. yes ok its sad. but its a media box with free internet and great games. who can argue with that?
