PS3 Vs Xbox 360 - GTA IV sales battle begins
By Dave Parrack
We’re now less than a week away from what promises to be the biggest multi-format game release of 2008, that of Grand Theft Auto IV. And as expected the sales battle between Sony and Microsoft has begun in earnest, as the respective companies want the PS3 and Xbox to gain an advantage.
Obviously, if you own just one of this generation’s consoles, this won’t really matter, as you’ll be buying GTA IV on the console you have. But for those people lucky enough, and with deep enough pockets, to own both the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, this is rather important: which console do you buy the game for?
NB: Wii owners need not read any further because the game is too big, and graphically demanding to appear on the Nintendo console.
Obviously, we already know that the Xbox will be getting some exclusive downloadable content for GTA IV through Xbox Live, so initially that looks like being the right choice. However, Sony have countered by saying the game is big enough without the need for any extra episodes, and they have a point.
How many people actually finished everything there was to do in San Andreas? Plus, if the main game is better on one console than the other, the episodic content could mean less than nothing.
The graphics are thought to be almost identical, and the gameplay is guaranteed to be the same on both consoles, so does it actually matter which console you buy it on? The answer is quite clearly no.
If you own both consoles, just buy the game for one of them, maybe influenced by which console’s controller you prefer, and just enjoy it. From all the previews I’ve seen and read, Grand Theft Auto IV looks awesome, and for once, maybe we should put our differences aside, pat Rockstar on the back for a job well done, and all play the game to death.
Wii owners meanwhile, can have yet another game of tennis on Wii Sports. At least until Wii Fit turns up.

One thing no one ever brings up…
The extra DLC on the 360 version has two shortcomings: 1) It won’t be available on Day 1, so for many months, the two versions will be identical. 2) The extra DLC will cost money. So believe it or not, there will be some gamers that will forego it entirely in favor of saving their cash for another game. GOW2, anyone?

Arvis:
Furthermore, the DLC that Microsoft paid for is a timed exclusive and the same DLC is scheduled to come to the PS3 after. Early reports are stating that the PS3 version will have a more realistic look unlike the cartoonish look that the 360 will have. Lastly, there is talk that the PS3 version will have more pedestrians and vehicles roaming the streets than the 360 counterpart and this is due to the Cell processor.

“Lastly, there is talk that the PS3 version will have more pedestrians and vehicles roaming the streets than the 360 counterpart and this is due to the Cell processor.”
What a load of crap.
April 23rd, 2008
lol i liked how the writer talked about the wii.
lets play tennis o.o
April 23rd, 2008
GTA IV extra content MS paid for is NOT “Timed Exclusive.” Please list your source here Roger, that’s complete bull***.
I haven’t heard anything supporting the idea that the GTAIV exclusive content MS paid for is “Timed exclusive.” - that’s bunk, MS paid for the rights to this exclusive content and all of it will never make it to the PS3. That’s another 15 hours of content.
Arvis - Day 1 we’ll all be playing the game on a controller that rumbles (without paying $55 for the controller). Also on Day 1 we’ll be turning off the in game music and putting on our own song list - PS3 can’t do that.
as for your second point - DLC will cost money. So? GT 5 prologue cost money, and to get the full game later on you’re going to have to pay again. $70 for a racing game all together. So things cost money, that’s capitalism, it will cost probably $10 - that’s not crazy.
And for GOW2 - yeah, that’s right. Bow down to GOW2, it’s going to knock every other game to shreds.
April 23rd, 2008
Here’s a link for you Roger . . .
I’m right - this is all exclusive Xbox content that the PS3 won’t ever have.
http://news.spong.com/article/15112
hehe I love all the PS3 owners who make sour grapes claims like “oh who will even still be playing the game in August? I mean come on?”
and “I never beat any GTA game 100% so this content means Jack to me.” . . . wow, we all know you want it guys, don’t try and act like you don’t.
April 23rd, 2008
“NB: Wii owners need not read any further because the game is too big, and graphically demanding to appear on the Nintendo console.”
haha you idiot We will have Super smash bros brawl on the wii later this year in euope and it’s not coming to ps3 or 360 lol
April 23rd, 2008
“maybe we should put our differences aside” Absolutely, I’m all for it in a perfect world. Unfortunately fanboy’s will never let that happen. Fanboy hatred will outliast religion.
“pat Rockstar on the back for a job well done, and all play the game to death” +2 for you. We all get to bask in the glow of greatness that GTAIV will bring to our respective consoles. So lets all hold hands and sing We Are The Wold and put our differences aside for a little while.
April 23rd, 2008
Yea, Dan Houser did confirm in-game custom track for PS3. I wasn’t surprised, considering Vice city and Liberty city stories all supported custom-tracks.
You just download the MP3 to the music folder, then in the options in game, you select custom music as the station.
PS3 GTA IV will have home integration and DLC, it hasn’t been confirmed if its the same DLC as the 360.
I know games like Uncharted Drakes Fortune will get an additional 2D side scroller game with home integration.
And Warhawk will get somekind of War Room simulator to plan your battles out.
Ratchet n Clank is suppose to have episodic DLC with home integration as well.
so, the short answer ‘yes’ PS3 version will have DLC.
I only completed 47% of GTA San Andreas, and 40% of Bully, these games are choke full of missions, I don’t really bother with the side missions and just play the main mission. I assume most casual consumers are like me and only will play the main mission.
Plus, why would I want to pay what? $20 - $30 for extra DLC for GTA during October, November time? Theres Gears of War 2, and Resistance 2 coming out around that time frame.
April 23rd, 2008
To the original question:
I have both units but If I decide to buy it, I will buy it on the 360.
Simply because its a better controller.
All I’ve got to say about the game is its better be be better then the last version.
April 23rd, 2008
I will be buying the PS3 version because of the better controller.
GTA is meant to be played on a Dualshock.
Xbox gamepad has some serious issues with games that require lock-on like DMC4 and GTA, you can tell those bumpers are not meant for these types of games.
April 23rd, 2008
360 version is the choice. Someone mentioned that the PS3 version will look better, what? Not what I’ve heard. Downloadable content a bad thing, that is funny, no please don’t come out with downloadable content for future reference, yeah that makes sense. NO DOWNLOADABLE CONTENT, PLEASE YOUR KILLING ME! Jokes. Controller preference, that is funny too. Come on everybody, it will run better on the 360 and most likely look better and Xbox live to boot.
Another thing is that Call of Duty 4 broke all type of records for its new maps. It’s pretty funny to even mention downloadable content to be a bad thing, come on fellows.
April 24th, 2008
I would buy the 360 version… but I have a modded 360.. meaning I can get pirated games at $5 (THANK YOU MICROSOFT for your AWESOME GAME PROTECTION)
If I wanted to buy an original 360 game.. I would have to buy it from the same region my 360 is from…
and GTA is too good of a game to play the pirated version…
So PS3 original version for me
@ Jonathan:
GoW2 is going to knock off every other game??? Just like Halo 3 knocked off COD 4 and Super Mario Galaxy… oh wait it didnt… (Im gonna use this whenever someone makes stupid claims)
But I am VERY excited for GoW 3 (GOD OF WAR!!!) I cant wait to kill Zeus…
April 24th, 2008
PS. As much as I want to play that additional 10-15 hours of GTA… I cant… because I cant download anything
Ohhh well… back to MGS “child molestor game”
April 24th, 2008
The PS3 version is going to pale in comparison to the 360 version. I hear stories that there is a new city in the 360 DLC. That would rule.
April 24th, 2008
The game will look almost identical on both systems but I will be getting it for my 360 (I have a PS2 as well btw).
Why? Because it has the better controller, Gamer Achievements and of course the option of buying DLC later in the year if I so wish.
April 24th, 2008
oops I meant I have a PS3 not PS2!
April 24th, 2008
sorry ther jonathan, but the PS3 version also has custom soundtracks, nice try though, and winner: it will not be new cities, it’s EPISODIC DLC, not new maps, that means new missions. duh
Oh and which controller is better? neither, it’s subjective, so stop trying to convince the world that the 360 controller is better.
April 24th, 2008
Oh yeah Darkwhite hair . . . GOW3 will be sooo cool - GOW2 was so much different than GOW1 . . . I mean . . oh wait . . it was the exact same game . . .
And note - I didn’t say Halo was a great game, read my post, I said GOW was a great game. GOW2 will be unbeleivable.
HAHA all you people and your custom soundtracks, don’t you read the news?
http://www.ripten.com/2008/03/31/microsoft-owns-patent-for-in-game-custom-soundtracks/
Sorry Microsoft owns it = therefore no custom ingame sound tracks PS3 owners.
April 24th, 2008
How does DLC help 360 owners w/o a hard drive?
Of course PS3 has DLC coming. As A PS3 owner I could give a shit. The game itself is more than long enough, in fact for me, it’s a little to long, the last thing I’d buy are tacked on missions.
Also, I’ll be playing the game come launch day, my hardware isn’t at MS waiting to be repaired, again. And what happens to your DLC when your 360 dies? It goes bye bye.
April 24th, 2008
Oh Jon, you queer. I happen to like listening to the music they spent years coming up with in-game. If I wanted to hear my own music I’d turn down the sound & put on my stereo.
And where do you get this shit? MS owns the right to in game music? Please. That just makes you sound like a waterhead.
April 24th, 2008
As for Episodic DLC not being “new cities.” - there’s an article in Game informer from March (or April) that discusses the DLC.
and I paraphrase “The Xbox downloadable content is big.” - Question - “new cities big?” Answer “yes.”
In Short - I will be playing this on the 360 not because the graphics will be better - but they will be - I’ll be playing it on the 360 becaues I don’t want to install something for 5 minutes before I play it.
http://www.crunchgear.com/2008/04/19/microsoft-politely-points-out-the-xbox-360-version-of-gta-iv-doesnt-have-a-pesky-5-minute-install-time-like-the-ps3-version/
Yeah . . . no install times on the Xbox, same game. Wow .. . wait! No it’s not the same game, Xbox has extra content.
I still have no idea why anyone would buy a PS3
April 24th, 2008
gerry - until you start reading more, please stop posting. you’re consistently wrong. a rumbless-less controller will ALWAYS be inferior to one with rumble, hence the 360 is the better controller. to anyone that thinks gaming to your own custom made soundtrack isn’t worth anything, hasn’t done it. it’s perfectly mixed and makes the game much more fun. it truly is a great feature for action and driving games. you can only listen to the developer’s songwriting for so long before it gets old. i don’t think Gerry understands the term custom soundtracks.
April 24th, 2008
I hope this game has child rape like MGS
April 24th, 2008
Jonathan:
“I’ll be playing it on the 360 becaues I don’t want to install something for 5 minutes before I play it”
It has already been stated by the head of Rockstar that Xbox’s lack of a HDD and the limited space on the DVD contributed to issues in the game design.
April 24th, 2008
@ kevin, my PS3 controller rumbles, what’s your point, and yes you can play your own music in the game on the PS3, so you really have no foot to stand on, Maybe it’s you who should read thouroughly and understand issues before you come back and post.
The only thing you’re good at kevin is lying and putting words in other’s mouths.
April 24th, 2008
edit, (you can play music in game GTA4 on the PS3) I’m fully aware not all titles support it.
April 24th, 2008
Sorry guys - I don’t see anything talking about the ability to play music through anything for the PS3 . . GTA4 or anything - please list a source here.
This is all I find:
http://www.dbtechno.com/gaming/2008/03/28/rockstar-and-amazon-let-gamers-buy-tunes-from-gta-iv-radio/
but who wants to buy things on Amazon to play them in game.
Give us a source someone - MS owns that patent, and therefore Sony and GTA4 can’t put it into their games.
I already gave the source citing the patent . . someone refute me.
FYI PS3 owners, “Refuting” someone does not include name calling.
April 24th, 2008
MS owns the patent for the method, not the idea Jonanthan. Also, the following games have custom music on the PS3:
SSHD, HVB, MLB 08: The Show, and Burnout paradise. So if they own the patent, where are the ensuing lawsuits?
April 24th, 2008
Also, the PSP had custom soundtracks long before the 360 ever hit the market, woops there goes that MS patent theory of yours.
April 24th, 2008
Oh MS has the Patent - that is why PS3 must address this lack of functionality one game at a time - the patent means that SONY (all worship), is unable to institute a system-wide solution.
please see the article discussing this patent:http://www.ripten.com/2008/03/31/microsoft-owns-patent-for-in-game-custom-soundtracks/
As for GTA4 having this functionality - I had heard that they ran into issues, and legally it had been blocked. . . .
So please someone post a link that says “GTA4 to have custom soundtracks on PS3″ cause right now I know otherwise.
April 24th, 2008
Hey PS3 owners - would you buy an Xbox if you could get all Netflix movies through it for the cost of your netflix subscription??

I’ll bet you the answer is “no” and the average IQ of those respondees is also “no.”

Jon - i don’t have the heart to tell the ps3 fanboys that MS bought 19%of Immersion and MS makes money on every rumbled controller sony makes. ka-ching!! hee, hee… great articles. I can’t wait for the netflix thing.
April 24th, 2008
Reading down this page im shocked at the little kid nature of this chat. Jonathan you are such a wanker, its people like you that give gaming a bad name. You are obviously a spotty little dick with no ‘real’ friends and i find myself feeling truly sorry for your family.
April 24th, 2008
Dan,
Uh, aren’t you kind of throwing your lot in with the “little kids” by attacking and name-calling? Somehow I don’t think Jonathan will see your post and think “Gee, that really hurt my feelings. I should be more polite over the internet from now on.”
*facepalm*
-Arvis
April 24th, 2008
Hey jon, if you read your little link that you keep crowing about you’d see that it does indeed state that MS has a patent for the way they do in-game music only. You can’t patent the idea, just the way it’s done. Sony is free to come up with their own method and patent that. MS’s patent in no way interferes with Sony’s ability to do it. So you can read but have no comprehension of what the words mean.
In terms of DLC vs hardware package I think Sony got the better deal by being able to sell ps3/gta4 bundles. THey’ll still have DLC, anyone that thinks the 360’s isn’t a timed exclusive is just ignorant.
April 24th, 2008
Wow Pfreak . . . you keep ignoring the facts, that’s fine. 50Mln dollars buys you “Timed exclusive?” . . . no, 50mln buys you “Exclusive” content.
I’m just waiting for your article Pfreak, the one that states “Xbox 360 Timed Exclusive content coming to PS3 on this date.”
It’s not going to happen.
I don’t understand Dan, and Arvis - I’ve been nothing but polite here. I just can’t figure out how people like you guys who can create sentences and spell things correctly, can then do something as dumb as think the PS3 is somehow superior or even on the same playing field as the Xbox 360. So please don’t take my utter shock and dissapointment in mankind, as me being rude. I am only trying to understand you guys and how your brains work.
April 24th, 2008
Jonathan,
I’ve actually enjoyed reading your posts alot more lately since you’ve toned down aggressiveness. But being an elitist snob is not the same as being polite. I have been gaming for about 21 years, and I genuinely prefer the PS3 to the 360. It’s reliable, quiet, looks great on my LCD flatscreen, has the content I want, the functionality I want, and integrates beautifully with my PSP. Since I don’t have much time these days to play games as much as I want, it’s multi-media functionality helped me justify spending so much on one machine.
Don’t get me wrong, I like the 360, too, it’s just a matter of not having the same taste. I’m not too into overtly violent games like Gears, and honestly I don’t care much for the FPS genre at all. That being said, I am still planning on owning a 360 at some point in the (hopefully near) future. It has some games I want, and some future releases I am excited about.
If you can’t understand why I like the PS3, the shortcoming is yours, not mine.
-Arvis
April 24th, 2008
No I read you fine - you like Blu-ray, sony has that, so you’re happy.
Me, I have a computer full of movies and Tv shows I can stream through my Xbox with no issue. As for HD movies I’ll be a happy subscriber to Netflix as soon as its available.
I’m really not an elitist snob - I just can’t stand the fanbois that come on and ignore all the errors sony has made, and point to the red ring of death and Blu-ray as their only saving grace.
BD is as dead as VHS before it get’s going, so don’t get too excited about that, and as for the Red ring, we have 3 years warranty, and all new consoles are now fixed and with smaller cooler CPUs and GPUs. So both those issues are out the window - now all we need is a reliable “+” and “-” comparison and honesty from fanbois.
The facts are not in Sony’s court, and I just want everyone to admit that as cool as you think the PS3 is, that you are actually pretty scared about its future. Also I want all of you PS3 people to admit that the only reason you hate the 360 is because some time during your schooling years you picked up the idea that it was cool to hate Bill Gates and Microsoft. I’ve never been able to figure that out - why hate Bill Gates? The guy is giving billions of his dollars away to Africa and others . . . I’ll bet you 90% of the PS3 posters on this site and others all hate Bill G . . . it makes no sense to me, so as comical as I was trying to be, I am in fact just trying to understand how your guys’ brains work.
Also I don’t buy this “Xbox is only good for FPSs” . . . unless you’re talking about Xbox1, cause Xbox 360 rocks all around. Crackdown was an extreemly fun game. Forza has already been discussed. Command and Conquer 3 is not an FPS. Xbox is good all around, and going to get better with this rumored Wii remote they’re adding.
I have a Wii as well, don’t play it much, but it’s fun to pull out at a party.
April 24th, 2008
that sounds sexual . . . it wasn’t supposed to be. . .
April 24th, 2008
Jonathan,
I don’t hate Bill Gates. If you look more into Microsoft and it’s “evil side” then you’ll know why the company is not too popular. But Bill Gates as a person, I have no problem with.
And I’m not scared about the PS3’s future. Should I be? I can’t think of any reason.
-Arvis
April 24th, 2008
please . . . I’m waiting for the “evil side” of Microsoft explanation . . . oh right! They make money . . . riiiight . . . Michael Moore . . . “corporations are evil.” It all makes sense now.
Scared about PS3’s future . . . no I guess Sony’s past any point of abandoning it. I would only be scared about the fact that a 4 game per console attach rate compared to a 7.5 game per console attach rate would mean that any developer in their right mind would create games first for the Xbox, and then make a crappy port for the PS3 . . . so if you don’t mind playing inferior games, then you should not be scared.
April 25th, 2008
@ Jonathan
yes I know God of war 2 was a HORRIBLE game… thats why it was nominated for “Game of the Year” along with 360 games and Super mario Galaxy… I know it was TERRIBLE.. unlike the 5 hour Halo 3…
How is Sony’s future at stake??? why because they dont have enough games??? So they are suddenly going to be bankrupt because they dont have titles like DOA Xtreme 2 and Viva Pinata??
I would like someone to please explain to me why Sony’s future dark… and why the 360 is going to last longer than the PS3… because of GTA 4 and the custom tracks??? unlikely…
PS… Microsoft has lost money in faulty 360s… and they are STILL losing money because the 360 has already been modded and you can buy the pirated games for less than $10…
GREAT GOING ON YOUR SOFTWARE PROTECTION MS!!!
April 25th, 2008
No I read you fine - you like Blu-ray, sony has that, so you’re happy.
Me, I have a computer full of movies and Tv shows I can stream through my Xbox with no issue. As for HD movies I’ll be a happy subscriber to Netflix as soon as its available.
(P.S. the same can be done with the PS3)
I’m really not an elitist snob - I just can’t stand the fanbois that come on and ignore all the errors sony has made, and point to the red ring of death and Blu-ray as their only saving grace.
(I can’t stand that you can’t see that blu-ray and a less than 1% failure rate is a good thing. Microsoft should have placed more time into product development before trying to release their product to the public. The one year lead that Xbox had has basically been negated by Sony.)
(I laugh at all that say that BD is dead before it starts. You all are putting way too much stock in a video download service that
1. cannot provide the same resolution as a blu-ray disk can.
2. requires considerable bandwidth that only a select few have.
Furthermore, a video download service is close to being released for the PS3 that will rival the Xbox live version. Sony will then have the best of both worlds: a dominant HD format as well as a proprietary video download service. As for the warranty situation, Microsoft had no choice but to offer that warranty or else they would have had a mob on their hands, this only reinforces that the machine was poorly designed.)
(I personally, orginally had concerns about Sony’s business model but in recent months the pieces are beginning to fall into place. Don’t forget that everyone has criticized blu-ray’s inclusion in the system and now it is touted as a strength and is praised. Noone knows what Sony is planning except Sony, and you should not underestimate the electronics giant. As for Bill Gates and his philanthropic efforts, he is trying to buy his way into the afterlife LOL.)
(Xbox is basically a downgraded computer. What Xbox needs to work on is it’s copyright protection. If this continues studios will begin to question whether or not it makes sense to develop a game if it only makes it’s way to the internet before release i.e. GTA IV… Just have fun purchasing your new system next year. Microsoft will have to release one to stay in the game.)
I have a Wii as well, don’t play it much, but it’s fun to pull out at a party.
(It’s funny but I own the PS3 and would never purchase the Xbox 360 however, I would pick up the Wii as a novelty. I’m sure many people feel the same way. So my final though is that you Xbox fanboy’s have fun replacing your systems time and time again and I will continue enjoying the same system I’ve had since launch.)

Jonathan,
Cite your sources.
Here’s a source that says the PS3 and 360 attach ratios are dead even:
http://www.dbtechno.com/gaming/2008/04/21/xbox-360-and-ps3-owners-buy-more-games-than-wii-owners/
Obviously statistics like these allow for a margin of error, so I am anxiously awaiting your source that says the 360 has an attach ratio of 7 games or higher.

two words for u 360 fanboys (i have both systems by the way) free online
April 25th, 2008
Well jonnyboi, since blu ray is enjoying adoption rates faster than dvd did and i’m enjoying blu ray movies right now i’d say it’s certainly not dead. dl movies are a decade away so blu ray is it for now.
enjoy your 3 year warranty. i like to have my hardware in my house not waiting a month for its return 2, 3, 4 + times.
i’ve always bought nintendo. i was very hesitant to buy a ps3 but the wii is shit and i don’t like fps (sorry, that’s what the 360 offers). i’ve been blown away by what a great purchase the ps3 is. the wifi, the bluetooth, it’s all seamlessly integrated. the fact that i was online in less than 5 minutes of having it out of the box was fantastic - and free. it’s beyond anything i expected. had i known, i’d have paid $599 a year ago.
April 25th, 2008
gerry - the poor ps3 owners who shelled out $600 for a ps3 has the one with NO rumble in their controller. rip off. also only a very few ps3 titles support custom soundtracks. waaaaaaay off from the 1,000 games the 360 has that support it. saying it’s the same as the 360 is about as stupid as saying psn is as good as xbox live because it has voicecom. forgetting that voicecom has to be purchased on TOP of the $600 for the ps3.
arvis - this is why i think you’re a sony paid- schill. you admit the 360 has more games, say you hate fps and action, but somehow LOVE the the ps3’s “content”. their BIGGEST titles are action/shooting games. they have a much smaller library than the 360, yet somehow, as a gamer you’re happy with less. blooray is nice, arvis, but dvd did not have the online competition when it launched that bluray has now. bloooray is a mere blip in the history of formats. sure it’ll sell, but with over 200 companies with their fingers in the pie, sony won’t see much.
pfreak - d/l movies are availabe NOW..not in a decade…wtf?
April 25th, 2008
Kevin,
Sony SHOULD pay me for all the free PR I’ve given them!
Seriously, though, I don’t need to “admit” that the 360 has MORE games. The fact that it has a larger library is… well, just that: a fact. But the PS3 has more games that I am interested in (I’m a big Final Fantasy and Gran Turismo nut), not to mention Home, standard wi-fi, and free online multiplayer. My LCD tv is far far away from my internet router, so when I get my 360, I won’t be going online with it at all because I won’t be able to afford it, and the games I want don’t require Live for the full experience. I calculated the costs, and it would actually have cost me more to get a 360 with all the functionality I wanted, than to just get a PS3. So the smaller library of games just doesn’t seem like much of a disadvantage.
I also don’t hate action titles. I’m… not sure where you got that. It’s not my favorite genre, by any means, but there are action titles I enjoy.

Kevin,
Like most, you don’t read posts, just post flames. DL movies do exist but are nowhere near a mass market medium. The infrastructure just doesn’t exist. XBL has about 350 movies, most in SD. There are millions of movies out there. 360 owners w/no hard drive are out of luck. And most people like to own a physical copy rather than pay for a movie and have to delete it later to recover disk space. You do know that the market for DVD sales is much bigger than rentals right?
50% of the US population does not have internet access. Of those that do, less than 50% have high speed connections capable of downloading an HD movie. This is not changing anytime soon, it will take about a decade.
If you enjoy downloading compressed files and watching them in all their artifacting, blown out glory on a big screen TV go nuts but don’t try to say the future is hear today. By the time DL HD movies are a reality, the 360 will be long gone.
April 25th, 2008
Wow Pfreak, you deny facts, and spout complete BS.
“50% of the US population does not have internet access. Of those that do, less than 50% have high speed connections capable of downloading an HD movie. This is not changing anytime soon, it will take about a decade.”
What oraface of your body did you pull those numbers from? What is this 5 years ago? 50% of US population online?
Why don’t you post some links to these things you call “facts.”
http://www.connectedhomemag.com/HomeOffice/Articles/Index.cfm?ArticleID=42122
This article says 75% of US is online - and this is from 4 years ago!
Netflix and Xbox already have a deal and it will be announced later this year - HD Downloads will be available, so I don’t know what you’re talking about with artifacting. I DLed an HD movie through Xbox live and it was by far better than any HD I’d seen so far. I have a 60″ SONY tv, and Xbox HD add on, but the HD I downloaded was much better than Transformers HD DVD.
So I’m not sure what you’re talking about with “10 years,” and “artifacting,” but as I’ve already demonstrated you don’t have a very strong grasp of facts, so please keep opinions you have, soundly called out as “opinions.”
I mean 75% of all statistics are made up right there on the spot.
April 25th, 2008
Jonathan:
You’re just as guilty at fabricating facts, you should take some of your own medicine.
April 25th, 2008
uh . . . wow Roger . . . Does ANYONE substantiate facts here? All my postings are above, can you please cite where I have fabricated facts?
April 25th, 2008
Good for you jonnycakes. believe what you want, i don’t give a fuck. enjoy your compressed hd movie. fact is, it is not hd, it is severely compressed and does not look anything like a blu ray disc.
April 25th, 2008
BTW jonny, your reading comprehension, which i’ve mentioned before, is terrible. your own link does not at all state what you claim it does. it claims 75% of the us population have access to the internet. that’s access, dummy, not in their homes. most people have access through work, school, library, etc. less than 50% have it in their homes and less that 25% have high speed.
April 25th, 2008
and you guys are only talking about the US.. what about the rest of the world??? will UK and Japan and China and get this Netflix service??
and how many HD movies can you store in your 360 hard drive before running out of space??
Call me old fashioned but I would rather have a physical copy of my movie…
April 25th, 2008
SOURCE IT PFREAK!
I don’t think you are personally a good enough source for statistics. Therefore give me a link and I’ll go read it 9 or 10 times so I can overcome any lacking I have in reading comprehension. I’d just like to see a link with some facts.
If what you say is true about “superior BD picture” how come you can’t show me any movie side by side comparison that shows BD with a much better picture than HD DVD?
All I find it the 300 comparison that states HD DVD looked better (although I can’t find it right now, or I would link it (like a responsible person, substantiating my claims)).
So I don’t know - it really just sounds like you’re making stuff up pfreak, HD movies downloaded through Xboxlive have no discernable video loss when compared to HD DVD or BD. In fact I thought the picture quality was better than the Transformers HD DVD I have (and that picture is incredible).
I still don’t believe your made up 50% number, and am waiting for your link to your study.
April 25th, 2008
To Darkwhitehair.
Not sure if you guys have netflix at all Dark, but in the US it’s great. We pay $10 a month and can have any movie we want for as long as we want it, when we return it they ship another arriving the next day.
This works perfectly for a settop box like the Xbox - where your Xbox would download the movie, then after you’re done with it you say “get next movie in my queue.” You could keep that movie forever, or watch it and delete it. From what I’ve heard on the netflix side they are working to make all downloads playable within 5 minutes of clicking “watch now.” So it’s hopefully going to be something where you can make a decision shortly before watching the movie. However, if not I don’t think there’s much issue, as I would just increase my membership level so I could have more than one movie at one time. Then you always have the top two movies of your queue and can decide which one of those to watch.
I’m sorry I don’t agree with your “physical copy” statement. Picking up a remote and being able to sit on my fat american couch eating potatoe chips and drinking beer, and not having to get up to put a DVD into an oldfashioned “laser” device, but just reading all 100 movies off of my hard drive is much much much more appealing to me.
April 25th, 2008
Jonathan,
100 HD movies on your harddrive?? Holy crap, you got a terabyte drive or something?
I have to say, I like the idea of just being able to push a button and have a movie play, rather than a put a disc in a slot. And, in a weird way, I actually think your downloaded-movie-better-than-HDDVD claim makes sense.
If you look into HD disc data transfer rates, you find out that the discs are only capable transfering data at a certain speed, but if you cut out the physical medium entirety, it would make sense that there may be a small increase in graphical fidelity when the movie is playing straight from the HDD.
On a related note, I know alot of people preferred the HDDVD release of 300 because of extra content, but as far as picture goes, BDs actually transfer data twice as fast as HDDVD, so it is actually physically impossible for an HDDVD movie to look better than a Blu Ray movie, unless the BD release was deliberately sabotaged in some way.
Nice post(s).

April 25th, 2008
pfreak - if your stats are true, then sony’s in a very bad time. one of the KEY selling points is broadband connectivity. i’m using a samsung dlp. no artifacting here, sport.
arvis - you can stream movies onto your 360 thru your pc. my pc has a much larger hdd than my 360 leaving a lot of room for movies and music. hd dvd’s picture was gauged at being better than bluray. the BDA never touted their picture quality over hd dvd, only storage space. (as if someone really want 12 hours of director’s commentary). best buy had them side by side and bluray was not up to hd dvd’s picture quality from first hand viewing. i thought bluray drives were slower than dvd and hd dvd drives. interesting.
April 25th, 2008
I was always looking for a side by side comparison too - I never have seen one. But it seems like that would have been a good starting point by BD (if in fact it was better). So the fact that there aren’t reviews after reviews claiming better picture quality on one versus the other would indicate to me both mediums looked the same.
April 25th, 2008
sorry - Not “claiming one is better than the other,” those reviews are everywhere. I’ve just never seen any reviews show pictures from both mediums and pointing out flaws with one or the other.
April 25th, 2008
Yeah, to me HDDVD and Blu Ray looked exactly the same. Everytime I hear fanboys say “Blu Ray looks better” or “HD DVD is so much clearer” I can’t help but roll my eyes.
*shrugs*
Maybe their eyes are better than mine.

Why fight over which console is the best for GTA IV, there are Pro-s and Con-s.
PS3 Pro-s
-You dont have to pay fee for playing ONLINE.
-More pedestrians, and lots of action simultaneously without having frame rates slowing down.
PS3 Con-s
-No future content
-Controls are shit compared to 360
XBOX 360 Pro-s
- Content and Addons
- Better controls
XBOX 360 Con-s
- The next GTA game will not be realesed for the xbox 360- Rockstar have some problems putting the content of GTA IV on a DL dvd disc. And there is no way in hell the next GTA game will fit into DL.
I have both consoles. And to be honest i am planing to buy this game for the PS3. First of all because i think that the PS3 can render more frames per sec. And this game is not an conversion between the systems. Both GTA IV VERSIONS are developed simultaneously.
April 25th, 2008
Wow, children arguing. lol. I have both systems. And I can say from an honest standpoint that the PS3’s controller is better. The analog precision is way better. I have Call of Duty 4 for both systems, and it’s a hell of alot easier to snipe with the PS3 controller than it is with the 360 controller. I love both systems though. They both have their positives and negatives. I may end up getting GTAIV for both, but as of right now, I have it reserved for my PS3. Simply because I like the controller better.
April 26th, 2008
lets look at it this way…
if your net can download at 1mb per second… it would take you 20 minutes to download 1 gb…
How big is a normalmovie… and how ig is an HD movie… A LOT bigger… so whats the minimum speed that you have to have in order to watch the movie in real time without lag???
You are so lazy that you cant even get up to put a disk into the drive??? jeez.. then maybe you shouldnt even bother to play games… you would have to move your thumbs… just subscribe to the Playboy channel.. they do all the playing for you…
April 26th, 2008
All Consoles,
The Grand Theft Auto series was actually originally designed to be played using the DualShock controller. Using it feels more natural for the game, not to mention the level of precision offered by the analog sticks compared to those on the 360 controller.
Also, there is no evidence that suggests that the 360 version of the game has framerate issues, or even less stuff onscreen. Your claims are bold, but ultimately misleading. Please post links back up these claims, otherwise your post is just flame bait.

Hey guys, check out the GTA IV review by IGN. Perfect 10. They even say that the PS3 version has a leg up on the 360 version.
@ Avis
There are frame rate issues on the 360 version, the above link is proof.
April 27th, 2008
Roger - please work on your reading comprehension, or post the exact wording and let us comprehend it for you.
here’s what was said: “While GTA IV is pushing the PS3 and 360 to the limit, it also runs amazingly well. Sure, there are framerate hitches here and there and (particularly on 360) there is some texture pop-in.”
Sure - it’s a very poor sentence, but he’s not saying the 360 has slow framerate, he’s saying there is some texture pop-in on the 360. Who knows how much Sony paid them to add that to the game.
Anyways, a little “texture pop-in” never killed anyone. Only having half the game as a 360 because a 360 has 15 more hours of gameplay, that sucks. I imagine some of you PS3 guys out there might just take your own lives because of this issue, so that issue has (or might) kill someone. But no one ever suicided over “texture pop-in” whatever the heck that is.
That article was written by a PS3 fan might I point out.
April 27th, 2008
So when he can clearly define what “texture pop-in” is, he might have an argument . . . as it is, I would hope textures are popping in all over the place in any game, otherwise it would just be greenscreen wireframe cities and maps . . .
“texture pop-in” . . . that’s just funny.
April 27th, 2008
Arvis - Not sure what you’re saying with the dualshock controller and GTA being designed for it. Unless you’re talking about GTA1 . . .
however, GTA IV is what we’re discussing now, and it was completed first for the 360 (in Nov) and then PS3 and the horrible things programmers have to do to get anything to work on it took them another 6 months of development. So GTA IV was designed first around the Xbox controller.
Any ways guys these controller OPINIONs we all have are moot - I like Xbox, I like PS controller . . . both take getting used to. The 360 controller is my fav yet . . .
oh and BTW, it shipped with Rumble, and didn’t contain some soon to be phased out motion sensing crap.
April 28th, 2008
@ Jonathan:
I have friends that owns a PS3, 3 acually, they also own a Xbox 360, Me, I prefer to stay with my 360. I never really liked the PS3, and I have my reasons, you dont like the PS3 you have your reasons.
They like the PS3, they have there reasons, please just drop it…your kind of making us Xbox 360 users look bad.
Xbox 360 has its up and downs, so does the PS3. its just that.
April 28th, 2008
I am very confused by everyone’s opinions regarding console wars.
I own a PS3 and a 360. The advantages and disadvantages of the two consoles seem plain as day to me.
PS3:
- Quieter
- Blu-Ray
- Less likely to have hardware failure
- Original controllers come with rechargable battery
- Bluetooth support for headset and keyboard and mouse
Xbox 360:
- Xbox Live just works better, easier and more intuitive to start an online game, etc.
- In-game access to Live and Chat.
- In-game music (a SERIOUS plus in a lot of games)
- Achievements (which I don’t care about, but some people do)
- More games are made for 360, then ported to PS3, often with negative side-effects (this appears to be changing and I look forward to it.)
- Original controllers come with rumble.
- No need to use a Bluetooth headset (which is often a pain to connect and occasionally has poorer sound and mic than their wired counterpart)
For this reason, if it is an online-heavy game, I simply go with my 360. I can’t think of any reason to go with my PS3 for these games. If it’s a driving game, or something I will definitely want to listen to my own music in, I go with 360 again. If both those factors don’t matter I pick my PS3 (as long as it’s not an inferior port) because it is quiet and I’m not constantly worried the thing is going to over-heat or have a hardware failure.
As far as companies go, I do not like Microsoft. My experiences with them have been very discouraging. I think they did a great job with Live and I don’t mind paying for DLC. Micro-transactions are the name of the game these days and if they make money (and I receive good value) all the power to them. I find the Sony online interface and store clunky and difficult to navigate. I have purchased content from it, and that’s fine, but the Live Marketplace is just a warmer easier to use interface. Sony has always treated me well as a consumer, but again, I have heard of people having the opposite experience, so whether I like the company or not is a moot point.
I plan to pick-up GTA IV for my 360 because I want to be able to get into an online game easily, and possibly chat with my friends online in or out of the game. If the game were only available for PS3 I would buy it for that console and be perfectly happy.
As far as feel of controllers goes, some people have a serious preference. I like the 360 controllers because they are comfortable and I find the triggers are better, but I like the light-weight of the PS3 controllers and the shoulder buttons better. 50/50 for me.
If you want to discuss whether one console is superior to another with regards to hardware, I would argue that the quieter, blu-ray equipped PS3 is the better machine. Then there’s the fact that 360s break down (I know several people on their 2nd, 3rd and 4th consoles). As far as actual gaming performance of the consoles, as in their ability to crank out graphics, I think it’s a wash (yes I know that the PS3 has finicky RAM, but that seems to have been overcome by most developers now). I get the FEELING that my PS3 has more power, but that’s just a feeling.
There is no reason to bash one console or another, especially on a game by game basis, unless you’re talking about how that one game looks or plays on the console. Fortunately I have the luxury of reading reviews for both versions and going with the superior one (if my preference for soundtrack and online ease doesn’t factor in too heavily). I keep waiting for Sony to correct the obvious issues with PS3s online environment, but so far not much has happened. We also have PSPs at the house which is another factor to consider when deciding what console to go with, but in all honesty it rarely comes up.
I look forward to this game and I hope everyone has a great time playing it!!
April 28th, 2008
very gta for xbox was fucking shit.. gta 4 is gonna blow balls for a xbox owner.. gta is a playstation game not mircosoft they just bribed rockstar big bucks that they couldnt refuse because mircosoft knew they would lose the war if g.t.a was a playsatation only game.. the only thing i can praise xbox for is custom soundtracks it makes for alot better gameplay.. there is alot of ways around this tho i.e a cheap mixer or alternate speaker source. everyone knows that gta will sell more on xbox because of how long it has been out but only the real gamers will be able to tell.. im lining up tonight for 12 oclock to get my copy .. if you didnt already know its going to be the ps3 version
April 28th, 2008
Jonathan-
i was reading all through the posts and i was having a fun time reading all of your posts but then i saw one where u dared say Blu-ray is as good as dead than i fell out of my chair and laughed because from then on all u were doin was speaking senselessly, have you heard the news? toshiba, THE CREATOR OF HD DVD, is OUT OF FORMAT WARS, thus leading to the only company actually supporting hd dvd 100%, out. and if you want a link here it is
http://www.ripten.com/2008/02/16/toshiba-to-stop-hd-dvd-production-reports-nhk/
And about the 360 vs PS3 GTA IV sales wars, i went to amazon and 360 is selling more copies by about 3%. Personally i have both consoles, had the 360 way before it even crossed my mind to by a PS3, and the 360 only had GOW as a good game that i liked but that got really boring after about a month of online…then Halo, but Halo went down south after their first game….then i got the PS3 and i’ve been playing a LAUNCH GAME for more than a year now, RFOM. Lauch title has been one of the best games i have EVER played. its so addicting. Also i have many PSN buddies that i play RFOM with that have 360s as well and they say they haven’t touched their 360s ever since they got RFOM. Also, i personally think that the ps3 has SLIGHTLY better graphics that could STILL be improved by using ALL the storage capacity that a Blu-ray disk can use. btw usually people that say 360 is best dont have a ps3, but i do and i prefer PS3……also rememeber that the PS3 lauched quite a while after 360, and its embarrasing that the PS3 is at the same level if not above 360 even though it has had less time to improve its services with firmware updates
April 28th, 2008
also my favorite movie rental place, block buster, now stocks blu-rays to rent!!!! yay!
April 29th, 2008
Seems pretty official by now, every website out there worth anything has stated the PS3 version looks better, loads faster and is an overall better technical experience, while the xbox 360 version is also great and either way you will be happy.
Xbox 360 pluses - Xbox live, downloadable content.
PS3 pluses - it overall works better than in the xbox (this is a fact before you start to flame)
It all comes down to what is more important to you. I honestly dont care about xbox live, gta may be fun online but it is a single player game and I will get it for the console that delivers the more satisfying single player experience. The PS3 controlers are also better and hey.. what do you know, Syxaxis may even be fun.. (not) but at least the option is there.
I own both consoles and I have 2 friends with ps3 and like 5 or 6 with xbox 360 but for me it’s still a very easy choise. go with the one it works better in..
April 29th, 2008
Well today i bought my xbox 360 version of GTA 4 . You guys go all out here hey? Damn its just a game, its not like MS or Sony gives you $$$ for defending they’re legacy sheesh guys c’mon
If you have a XBOX 360 get that version
Vice versa to PS3 easy as that
PERIOD!
April 29th, 2008
I work for a popular games manufacturer, in the IT dept, we send back 5 - 10 360’s (test kits, dev kits, demo kits retails) EVERY WEEK - we have sent back 3 PS3 dev kits and test kit EVER - that tells the story on reliability, and no the elite version doesn’t improve things, it is just an extra connection which isn’t properly utilized it purely to connect HDMI devices (not full HD signal, much like the wave of ’HD Ready TV’s that were not HD at all just had HDMI, no 1080p no 7.1, the camera is shit, PS eye has very good motion tracking so you can play games without a controller, and the controller has six-axis motion sensitive so you just tilt the controller, that is not in the 360 controller which is not ergonomic at all, they made it smaller once they will probably end up with something like the PS controller and no Sony haven’t changed its form factor, probably because it doesn’t need fixing - 360 is on it was out , tech is so old now your need to replace most of the internals to catch up with PS3’s capabilities, good looking on the x720 or maybe the 360 ultimate ………… wherever the most money comes form for billy boy ..
360 is better for games and sales, its been out longer that’s why, some peeps cant pick up a PS3 after they have forked out for 360 maybe that’s why they say its expensive, every console was £300 at launch except the Wii but that is shit . Ps3 is capable of much better graphics , has free online, a HDD as standard, BluRay (someone said bluray is shit – how funny , so are these fangled color TV’s - dickhead ) , A much better interface and media sever (I would have bought one just for the media sever, though I didn’t have to pay for one) much better sound reproduction, last update gave it DTS Master Audio , but if you don’t know what this is then you wont appreciate it much like most of the advanced features of the PS3 , they will probably become apparent within a couple of years when MS release the next Xbox.
I think PS3 hasn’t really taken of yet, but then the 360 is definitely on its way out and it had issues throughout its life, all the differences that people point out are usually not failures by sony but are really corrections of mistakes made by Microsoft, misleading the masses, Sony have done it properly 360 is a half assed attempt - if most of the 360 fans actual used a PS3 for a couple weeks they would probably see, its like a professional piece of kit , 360 is more of a toy
April 29th, 2008
lol reading this was hella funny.
damn, I’m a sony fan I admit but I wouldn’t spend this much time arguing.
I like ps3, you like 360 heh who cares, nothing I say will change how you feel, nothing you say will change how I feel.
Even if microsoft owned the gameing industry I still wouldn’t buy thier stuff, who cares thats just me lol look at how the japanese market responded to the 360, is there a reason 360 isn’t liked there?
probably none worth noteing.
My point is 360 fans are happy with what they got, ps3 fans are happy with what they got, why does everyone have to fight about this crap?
Wii is outselling both, and is loaded with games… I don’t like the Wii, the controls don’t feel right, I liked the game cube much more but is that going to change anything? nope…
May 1st, 2008
Well, it looks like the PS3 version is buggier then a corpse. Also, DL content is important, because the games are identical and there are some of us that complete games. Oblivion is one of the largest games ever made yet I still wait for more. The 360 wins this one for now. The xbox 360 console it’s self still suffers from poor quality manufacturing, but so did the PS 2. We deserve better then both Sony and MS delivered but MS got us the closest so far.
May 2nd, 2008
Who ever says the cell is better is an idiot. 1. Its a cut down version of the cell 2. Its rubbish for games compared to the microsoft processor because it only has 1 general processor running at 3.2ghz and the rest are SPE’s which are rubbish for games where as the xbox has 3 generals running at 3.2 ghz. The PS3’s processor is great for calculating numbers but rubbish for games because for games you need general processors and this is where the xbox processor excels.
May 2nd, 2008
Ryo speaks like a true sony fan. like most of the 360 fools i know get all serious and shit about which system is better. all the ps3 fans are totally chill.
May 9th, 2008
Trust me dude. Take one step out of your made up world and you’ll find there’s a hell of a lot more flaming petty Ps3 fanboys out there than 360 fanboys. You know why? It’s justification for spending $600 on a high powered internet browser….ZZZZZzzzzzz sorry I was about to list the rubbish games the ps3 but what’s the point we all know how much they suck.
Also since when did free online play become a good thing. I’m pretty sure most people don’t play PS3s on 56k modems but that’s what your getting(poor quality online service).
Just to clear things up. GTA was suspended for 6 months because the PS3 couldn’t handle it also there are lots of reports that the PS3 version is bugged and crashing all the time(I won’t post any refferences because I know you know that already).
So much for Blu-ray sure it can hold more space and shows HD but it’s slow as shit. The amount of time it takes to put a game on Blu-ray is ridiculous and still it can’t get it right.
Any way I hope you’re enjoying our game. Thank the Scots for making such a great game. Funny how us Brits make all the best stuff.(except cars of course)
May 10th, 2008
Both arguments are very compelling. I recently purchased a PS3 much to the dismay of all my friends that have a 360 and so far have enjoyed it immensely. I owned an original XBOX and loved playing games like Fable. Unfortunately what I ran into was a shortage of solid RPGs for the XBOX. I can see this being a problem again for the 360. Which is why I switched to the PS3. If the PS 2 RPG library is any indication of what to expect with the PS 3 then I should have enough content to last me for a few years. Who knows, maybe by then ATARI or COLECO will come out with a next gen console and will blow everything else away
May 12th, 2008
To everyone who is arguing what controller is better.
Hands down it’s the 360 controller and I’m not a fanboy. I have both systems but I get a bad case of the PS3 CLAW when I play my PS3 longer than a couple of hours.
I don’t know what it is, but even with the original dual shock, you have to slightly curve your wrists in to grab the controller which starts to ache after a couple of hours. I think becuase you have to hold the controller in an un-natural position this causes the pain in my wrists. I’m not the only one who has said this past.
The 360 controller on the other hand, pun intended, lets you hold the controller in a natural position and the triggers are far superior to the dual shock 2. The D-pad on the 360 controller sucks though.
May 23rd, 2008
Besides exclusive DLC, how about exclusive games?
http://www.digitalmagazine.com.au/2008/05/24/xbox-360-annihilates-ps3-with-two-times-more-exclusives/

I’ve always preferred PlayStation to Xbox. The overall feel of the Xbox controller itself was terrible in comparison to the PS2.
But what people don’t know, it is just like Coke vs. Pepsi, same drink with little difference. Playing GTA on 360 isn’t much more rewarding then playing on a PS3.
I like being able to pay for my internet without an extra monthly fee so I enjoy my PS3. Those with a 360 are just as happy.
July 16th, 2008
pushy- i agree. the side by side sticks of the ps3/2/1 just isn’t as intuitive as the offset sticks of the 360. much more comfy… i do miss the duke controller tho…
October 7th, 2008
Ha ha! Have you ever wondered why some people come out first saying they actually have both consoles so they are not fan boys, but then reverting to say they prefer one or the other? I always seem to have the semi psychic nack of smelling bullshit a mile away? The internet sure has a lot of clowns.
oh yeah ps3 rulz! nuff said.
