I don’t own a Wii (yet), but have enjoyed my DS and GBA games over the years, observing more than once Nintendo’s success in the handheld market while it’s consoles, the N64 and Gamecube, were failing. What’s different with the Wii and why is it still selling out a year and a half after it’s release?

It’s all well and good selling millions of units of hardware, but unless people are also buying software for it too, then you may as well give up now. NPD has issued it’s latest U.S. software attach rates for the PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii as well as the PSP and DS, and it makes for interesting reading.

Possibly giving new legs to the old knee jerk press chestnut that “video games are the root of all evil” due to violence, it has come to light that the United States plans to use custom video games to train its spies and soldiers how to think. In the wake of bungles like the Iraq war and questionable treatment of prisoners, the hope is that video games will reach the young generation of new soldiers and spies in ways a traditional classroom can’t.

With the government moving to digital broadcast and offering those lovely little coupons, some might think that progress is pushing the adoption of HD sets on consumers; however, it would appear HD TV manufacturers should be giving a pretty lengthy shout-out to PS3 and Xbox 360 manufacturers Sony and Microsoft, because 18% of the HD sets sold in the last year were to gamers who wanted to take full advantage of their next-gen consoles.

Grand Theft Auto IV is a game with the potential to shift hardware, and force people who have so far stayed in the last generation and been happy playing their PS2 or Xbox, to finally jump ship. But which console will they jump ship to on the strength of GTA IV?

An exclusive video game show for New York’s Time Square is not exactly the first thing I thought I would be writing about when I got up this morning. But, it seems that Clear Channel broadcasting thinks it is a great idea. The GCHD video series, as its being called will air only on a high-def video display in Times Square and is targeted at the average gamer, but that may not mean what you think it means.

You might laugh off the whole concept of violent Wii titles, but it isn’t out of the question. As for the EU, it is calling for an industry-designed code for what is acceptable to depict in video games and what could be damaging to impressionable youth. I don’t see what the problem is what that…after all, you can’t honestly expect parents to actually monitor their kids’ activities and video games, can you?

One of the most anticipated exclusive titles for the Playstation 3, Metal Gear Solid 4, has caught the attention of the big bad game police over at the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) because of one rather questionable instance in the game. Though GTA IV has its hookers, and Man Hunt has its gruesome slayings, the BBFC was up in arms that Metal Gear Solid 4 has what was called “implied child rape.”
