Grand Theft Auto IV to steal Xbox Live top spot from Call Of Duty 4?
Grand Theft Auto IV is now out, and selling in huge numbers everywhere around the world. One of the big differences with this latest version of the long running series is the inclusion of multiplayer options for the first time in it’s history. But will enough people play GTA 4 online to knock Halo 3 and Call Of Duty off the top spot of most played game on Xbox Live?
Up until now, Grand theft Auto has been a purely solo experience, but the new version has a whole host of multiplayer options, including the ability for up to 16 players to participate online in a variety of different game types.
That’s not to say the single player experience has suffered as a result, with 50 hours being the estimated average play time. Which begs the question – Will enough people get bored with the single player game to venture on to Xbox Live?
Aaron Greenberg, the director of product management for Xbox 360 and Xbox Live certainly thinks so, telling Reuters:
“The multiplayer in this game is so well implemented that I can’t imagine anyone owning a copy without trying to play it on Xbox Live,”
“GTA is unique because it appeals to such a large audience. It will likely be the best-selling game launched all year and we expect it will drive a lot of new members to Xbox Live.”
He also added that he thinks it has the potential to overtake Halo 3 and Call Of Duty 4 as the most played game on the Microsoft service. What will certainly help is the game shipping with one month’s free paid Xbox Live. That in itself could tempt thousands online for potentially the first time.
Xbox Live does tend to be dominated by shooters, and while there is certainly a fair amount of shooting in Grand Theft Auto 4, there’s also a lot more besides.
I think GTA 4 does have a chance of hitting the top spot on Xbox Live, but we’ll have to wait a few weeks until enough hardcore gamers finish the single player mode, and feel confident enough to venture online for a mass brawl.

COD 4?? I thought Halo 3 was the most played game in LIVE…. hehe a little more 360 bashing to draw out kevin…
I am so jealous of you guys playing Multiplayer GTA 4 before me.. but soon.. soon I WILL BE AVENGED!!!
Ohh theres a rumor going around that GOW !!! will have multiplayer… becuase the devs are hiring multiplayer guys for the game.. JUST A RUMOR… dont look too much into it…

I wanted to play the games that came out on the release… I found out later that I couldve bought the cheaper PC versions….
so I had to keep mine… but I got to play Geow and Mass effect.. and PGR 4 (or 3 well one of those) they were pretty cool…

DWH- only the jealous ps3 fanboys think halo3 is the #1 played game on live. cod4 took the crown. i think it’s cool gta has the online feature. it’s odd you didn’t tell hamburger the real reason you’re not on ‘live. because you’re playing a modded 360 (so you say) and only “buy” pirated games from stores..presumably the same “store” that sold you a modded xbox 360..pardon me while i roll my eyes…

I believe that GOW2 will blow both Halo and GTA IV outta the water when it comes out. There saying that Halo 3 and GTA IV are on par with sales. Don’t know how true that is yet but we’ll see.

dwh – look, you OBVIOUSLY have no knowledge of this industry and are a complete waste of bandwidth. first you claim the elites have hd dvd drives. they don’t. then you claim you don’t have xbox live because of using a “modded 360″. no, genius. please don’t try to understand the american judicial system from australia. they didn’t SETTLE. the case went NOWHERE because it was w/o merit and ms was making strides in correcting the problems. the fact you don’t know the terms pixel or vertex shaders and how they’re used would be laughable if not so entirelty sad. do you even know what normal or bump mapping is? dynamic lighting? anything? bah…of course not. it’s so much easier to PRETEND you know this stuff, right? just like that old pesky hd dvd drive in the 360 elites.

Extended warranty period… (which has some money value)

They are trying.. and they are probably going to fail terribly.. because not everyone is a LAZY fatass like you.. they like having a hard copy of their movie… you download the movie from netflix… you stream it to your PC (where you store it) during that time.. I can go to a shop (If I lived in US) and buy more than one movie on Blu ray… bring it back home… and voila… I dont have to stream it to my PC… Its not in danger from viruses… its in a CD…
so overall… the 360 is trying to be a movie player too.. its tried to be with that stupid external add on… and now since HD DVD is dead.. they have to find new ways of infiltrating the movie market..
