Study shows PS3 has better concentration of good games than 360, Wii

One of the largest deciding factors that should be considered in the purchase of a game console is the quality of the games that have been made for it. Though many people believe that the Xbox 360 has the best collection of games, a recent study showed that the PS3 has more good games than any console now on the market.
Gamer site Gamefunk recently compiled all the ratings of games made at GameRankings.com, and the results are interesting: though the Xbox 360 has the most titles of any console (which is to be expected, as it has been available since 2005), coming in at 374 titles in total, only 86 of them received good rankings. A good ranking is based on the game being scored at over 80%. That means 23% of Xbox 360 games are good, or just over 1 in 5.
The Playstation 3 has 122 titles to its name, and 40 have been rated good…that’s 33%. 1 in 3 PS3 games are good, according to GameRankings.com.
The Wii is about as far behind in the rankings while still remaining with the pack; though an impressive 189 games have been made for the Wii, only 20 were given good rankings, meaning a sparse 11% of Wii games received scores of 80% or higher.
Granted, 80% scores aren’t stunning (not everyone can be like Rockstar and get across the board 100 scores for their games), but that applies for all consoles, not only the Playstation 3.
So, if you haven’t decided which console to purchase, and are looking for the best concentration of good games compared to the number of titles released, the PS3 is the way to go; of course, the Xbox 360 has plenty of titles to choose from, and making a fool out of yourself by waving a Wiimote can be fun when intoxicated, but the numbers show the highest concentration of good games are available on the PS3 console.

What A Load of Crock. That has got to be the Biggest Lie of the Year. A game score means nothing. Look at Cane and Lynch. It’s all about preference and variety as People have different taste. How many times do I read IGN’s Reader review on games and so many people say that IGN gave it a wrong score wether it be in favour or against. Besides most of these scores are paid scores. I’m sure GTA IV is. A 10 means PERFECT and the game is not perfect. GTA does not deserve a 10 score but it is a good game. Besides most games are reviewed after launch day or on the day of, not a few days before to get you hyped to buy it before it comes out. GTA was a paid score! Simple and plain. Bottom line 360 has something for everyone it not just shotters like everyone likes to say. The arcade is your casual games and some on disk and then you can find a good collection of shotters, RPG, Racers, Action, Strategy, and the list goes on. It’s know 360 is known for shotters but trust me there is so much more including movie/TVshows Downloads and soon to come XNA Games. They said they will have 1000 games by the end of 2008. What are you really going to say to a 1000 game catalouge? That is variey Baby. Something for everyone. I’ll leave room for my peoples to give you a list of games later because I know it’s coming.

Wow, you just noticed this? Jesus, the Wii is loaded with shitty kid games and the 360 has only a handful of games that aren’t fucking ridiculously overhyped.
On the other hand, the PS3, despite its smaller library because it was released a year later, has MANY MORE great games than bad games.

why is it when 3rd party impartial people make a study and find out one console has something better… the other label them as a fonboy.. these are the exact people who gave Halo 3 and Bioshock a good rating.. so… does that mean their rating was stupid?? and that Halo 3 didnt deserve the rating it got??? I didnt like Halo 3 as much as the previous games… it didnt have any big improvement… but it was a nice fps.. an enjoyable fps… now does that comment make ME a 360 fanboy…
and yes I played Kane and Lynch on the PC… and that was a terrible game.. it was a belkow averge shooter (my moms cooking does more damage than the grenades)
and this study was talking about concentration… meaning if the PS3 had 10 games… and had 9 good games… and the 360 had 100 games and had 20 good games… the PS3 would have the highest concentration…(even though the 360 has more good games)
therefore it is not a perfect way of judging consoles…
and I still cant get over the fact that the biggest games on the 360 arent exclusives… Bioshock.. gears of war.. mass effect.. these games wouldve been right up there with Master cheif in representing the 360.. but if an averge person has a decent PC.. then he doesnt need to buy a 360… he can buy a PS3… and buy the 360 games on his PC… itsa as simple as that…

one assumption on why the it is freezing up on the PS3 could be that… since GTA loads the ENTIRE game in the beggining… it need additional cache or memory.. so when your internet cache has a lot of “stuff” in it.. it cant load properly and it freezes… thats why Rockstar is advising people to delete their internet cache…
ohhh…. and kevin.. and all the other fanboys… Microsoft still hasnt commented on the freeze issue… is this the customer service you were bragging about… the service that Sony doesnt have???

As a side note, I can honestly say that I am a fan of the Halo series. I’m not that concerned about big advances or changes in the game as it progressed. I just enjoy the story and the gameplay.

Gta on 360 has problems too, my elite got the rrod playing it yesterday and my friends copy keeps locking up on his premium 360. Also the pop-up is terrible at times (crashing into a car that hasnt appeared yet!) and can really make missions hard.

Obviously this is dumb. The [i]proportion[/i] of well-reviewed games on a system is a meaningless statistic when deciding whether or not to buy it. The number of well-reviewed games would be good to consider, but regardless of the number of poorly-reviewed games on the system, they aren’t going to hamper your enjoyment of the good ones. You realise, of course, that you don’t [i]have[/i] to play [u]all[/u] of the games released for a console, just because you bought the system?

But if you buy the PC and not the 360.. you miss out on Forza and PGR… they are really good games and it owuld be a shame for anyone to miss them… but you also have GT 5… and you also have to wait for your PC version to come out (which is released a LOT later)

Being a self reported PS3 fan, this report is still kind of skewed. Your basically saying that the PS3 is better because there are more good games vs bad games (this is my assumption of what your saying).
Before I continue I will admit that though I haven’t looked into it, the Wii does seem to have a higher likelyhood of producing bad games according to your report, however I feel that if anything, your report actually supports the Xbox 360.
Your data attempts to punish the Xbox 360 simply because it was released a year earlier. The predominant console (console that is in most homes at a given time) will receive the most attention from everyone, including shoddy developers. The PS3’s relative youth compared to the Xbox 360 leads it to receive less of the crap games. However, with that in mind, you have to remember that most PS3 games that have gotten higher ratings have been released on BOTH consoles. With that in mind, if more than half the games that are good on the PS3 are also on the Xbox, the Xbox is by your report a better system to buy since that would mean that it has . The only “penality” is what I saw in an earlier comment, variety. No one is making you buy bad games…
The only reason the PS3 has less bad games is because it hasn’t been out as long, so a better way (but honestly not even remotely the best) way to go about this, would be to report only titles released since the PS3 came out, and even then, your statistics would be skewed.

Ok, I am a PS3 Fan. I personally have no interest in the XBOX. But I must say that these numbers are not good enough to make the argument stated. Basically this, since PS3 has been out, many games have been multi platformed for both. Before it came out, they were all made for the XBOX360, so it has more games both bad and good. Now chances are just as we are seeing today, that if the PS3 came out the same time as XBOX360, those same games that are bringing it down, could have very likely been ported to the PS3 which would probably bring them closer to neck to neck in this respect. Face it, if you make a game, and you want to make money, making it for just one console, will net you less then making it for more than one. The only thing that keeps you from multi platform is ease of the port, upfront compensation by a console maker, or just inability of the console to handle the performance load required by the game the developer visioned to produce, hence why the Wii doesn’t really share too much in the multi platform predicament. So the only thing that will ultimately get you an edge in better games, would be an overwhelming lead in total consoles in consumers hands, your consoles ability to better handle the performance demands of the game, ease of development(which depends on whether it can be overcome over time), and to some degree, a developers own affection towards a particular console that is enough to not care about overall profit.

1) This study’s criteria to discern “good” games from “bad” ones is purely arbitrary. Essentially, the study is a group of several people’s opinions about which games are “good” and which are “bad.” So take these statistics with a very large grain of salt.
2) Assuming these statistics are cold hard fact (which they are not and cannot be), then the 360 still has a higher number of “good” games (86 > 40)
3) Its worthless to argue opinions over an article based on opinions. Theres no way to prove one side right or wrong, so go enjoy the games you have for whatever console(s) you might have. And find more productive uses for your time than mindless name calling to random fanboys on the message boards.

Kevin may have been absent for the same reason as me, it is the weekend and I don’t spend any time in front of a computer. I do things such as get sunlight and talk to real people.
But I have to say that Triston is not a fanboy. He does post balanced articles and does not show any real bias.
We can compare which machine has the higher concentration of good games, but at the end of the day, it really doesn’t matter. Last gen, the PS2 had a plethora of crapola games and it still won that war.

Given the fact review sites are not w/o questionable intentions (remembering Jeff G got fired from GS after giving a bad review to one of their sites MAJOR advertisers), the tie in ratios are the tell. more people find more games enjoyable on the 360 proven by software sales. more games on the market does NOT mean a higher attach ratio.

dwh - i bought a hd dvd addon for $50 now that they’re clearing them out. not a bad deal for a drive with over 200 movies still available while making regular dvd look awesome. let me know when bluray players get to $50. how do i feel? great. you? it’s odd tho; last gen the ps2 had the higher attach ratio over the xbox, yet the xbox games looked better and received more favorable reviews than most ps2 games, yet the ps2 was claimed to have a better library due to sales. my how things change….

ALL w/o paying for a $500 hd movie player. IF dvd were “obsolete” like you said, why are more movies being released on dvd than bluray? and eff the gpu, it means nothing, they have better gpus already. its basiclly a light processor. it adds bloom to pretty much everything to soften out the edges. its cheap anti aliasing.

Hope you enjoy your old HD-DVD movies because that is it, no more new release movies. Mean while, I’ll be enjoying current blu-ray gems. Oh and yes, you can download all the great compressed movie offerings from LIVE if you want, and save them onto your optional extra 1 terrabyte HD (thats what you will need for movies at a minimum) that has to be a microsoft endorsed hard drive. You can have “netflix” another money funnel for microsoft.
At least Sony allow you to install any 3rd party hd or 3rd party device, via bluetooth or usb.
I love how microsoft get you in as a customer and then you are tied to them because everything you get for your system is bought on thier terms, ie :
-Microsoft only endorsed hd,
-Add on HD-DVD players, again microsoft,
-All 3rd party software - throught LIVE only (which you have to pay for the privelidge)
-LIVE to go online
Should we go on….
360 is a great games machine (the ones that work) but for anything else your gotta pay for it, and it has to be microsoft… sounds great to me.
Oh and the PS3 can stream media as well m8.

psssst Kev, I don’t need to stream movies, I can play them direct. Whether it be Blu-ray or 1080p upscaled DVD.
Matter of opinion as to the “best graphics, CPU, online and gameplay. I will beg to differ on “which is FAR better” I have already stated that they are not that far apart. Each has it’s pro’s and con’s. Me a Fanboy…hehe. I have shown in various sections that I like both systems. The reason I give you so much grief is because of the blatent one eyed 360 comments and arguements…
And I’d hate to tell you Kevin, but splitscreen in UT3 for 360 is only because they can’t get the same modded content that PS3 can get (once again curtesy of MS LIVE not allowing it - you can thank almighty MS for that eh Kev..)They had to throw a bone to 360 owners somehow and splitscreen was it.

ps…OXM also had an interview with epic regarding bringing mods to the 360. it’s happening as we speak. the difference being, ms will ensure gamers dont’ crash the network with their “mods”… sony can’t ensure that as it’s an open network. once the wrong guy gets in psn with his “mod”, it won’t be pretty.

I read the article the interview with epic and they stated pretty plainly that mod support for 360 will be VERY limited and only offered through LIVE and as such they had to give 360 owners something that PS3 owners presently didn’t have to compensate for that….splitscreen.
As a side note, I am very jealous of splitscreen. Hopefully they will release it later for PS3 too.
I haven’t had to “cough” up more dough to talk online. You obviously have no idea and are actually the “n00b” The voicecom as you put it, works just fine on mine, I haven’t relied on “reading about it” to get that opinion.
I have a nice collection of ps3 games and blu-ray movies … and all of them work exceptionally. A friend of mine has a 360, guess what, it’s games work exceptionally.

really?? you think I havent played Bioshock?? well I cant bother to convince you if you keep telling yourself that.. I tried to see the good and bad of both systems… but the minute I say something bad about your precious 360 (you act as if its as valueable as your tiny balls) you label me as a fanboy…
I really did like Bioshock.. why wouldnt I like a game where I can kill the last boss with a fully upgraded wrench.. that was cool… and the little sisters stabbing the boss guy… but even though Uncharted has better graphics… I enjoyed Bioshock…
what about Resisntace and its split screen?? yeah you didnt know it had split screen with multiplayer did you??? now youre gonna claim that their developer wasnt as good as Epic…
you see the reason 360 has split screen in UT is the same reason GTA 4 in the 360 has DLC… the devs made a decision to put it in themselves.. if they wanted to they couldve done the same with the PS3… but “something” made them not do it…

I have an external 500 gig drive sitting happily next to my PS3 (not pirated..lol and not sony either) and it has all my media and game files, saves, PS3 backup, etc on it. And wait for it…… HD movies that I can stream if I want too…

Ah Kevin….wrong again. I said “not get the SAME modded content” not (not getting mod’s) so I didn’t lie, you have misread yet again and pulled out the information you want, yet again. The modded content that will be made available to 360 owners will NOT be the same and will be very limited (if they can strike a deal with microsoft to bring that mod content to those owners - not in stone yet, but I’m sure it will)
My headset, I already had. You see, we don’t have to buy SONY ONLY hardware to use. So I could use the hardware I already had. So in fact the keyboard, mouse headset, mp3 player, camera etc (all non sony) cost me no extra because I already had all of that equipment. So yet again, kevvy is wrong. The only extra money I have spent is $150 dollars for a 500 gig ext hard drive, that wasn’t really needed cause I could just stream from my PC, but thought a drive would be better suited.
Sony will make it’s money, in time. There are plenty of games now and a crap load more to come. I am absolutley not concerned about that and neither is Sony, it’s only little 360 fanboys like you that seem preoccupied by those pathetic excuses you come up with.

$150.00 au - Western Digital that just plugs straight into an usb slot.
The PS3 doesn’t recognise it as “one” with the internal drive and it also will not save content from PSN to the external drive at this time. (from what I can tell) But if your worried about PSN content you can back up the int HD to the ext HD. This may change with firmware updates, ie allowing PSN content to ext HD (may have something to do with copyright and easily being able to swap content from portable drive as opposed to the int HD)
It pretty much uses it the same as the “memory stick” media but a really big one…..so you can save all your media etc on it and play/use it from the drive.

I’m stating what was said in the interview, so not really a guess (99% guesses eh ! nice figure how did you come to that)
I use the keyboard and mouse for web browsing and UT3. I am sure if this was available to you, you would use it too.
My PC has died recently (a very good gaming rig too, disappointed) and additionally I hated Vista (like XP though) and the pS3 start up way faster and is in a far more comfortable room/seating - not to mention the HD LCD compared to a 19 inch widescreen computer monitor. Some pretty good reasons, I think.
I am very happy with the games I have, (Simpsons game was a little disapointing though - easily bored with it) I enjoy shooters and have more than enough to make me happy. They are all of very high quality and I enjoy the HD gaming experience (have a very large list of “must haves” as well but just can’t afford them at the moment) I have no real inclination to argue about the games because as I have said the gaming quality is very similar on both systems including graphics.
You are the one claiming that the 360 is far beyond that of the PS3. I don’t really care. They are both good systems. I just like giving to you because … well you ask for it really.

spideydog - if sony had 120 millon ps2 users (by their OWN admission) and only now have around 12 million; what is the percentage of those ignoring the ps3 from the ps2? closer to 90% if that makes you feel better. altho 90% ignoring the ps3 is not good news for sony depending on “loyalty” to sell a movie player.

dwh - less than 100k bought the hd dvd addon. 100k out of 20 MILLION? ooooo….the pain. what a joke. i have a hd dvd drive i bought for $50 and already answered your question. best hd movie player on the market for $50. not a bad investment for a player with a ton of movies avail and it upscales my current dvd collection to near hd quality. all w/o spending $600. $50 is not bad considering i dropped $115 at Ruth Chris Steakhouse on Saturday.

I know I said I wouldn’t answer, thank you for your comment about my PC.
There is still a plethra of games still coming out on PS2 and the cost of a PS3 is still fairly high. I am not surprised 108mil PS2 owners “supposedly” haven’t jumped over.
Actually I would even say that those owners are very smart. Hold onto thier console while it is still pumping out games, wait for the PS3 price to come right down, then upgrade.
I didn’t do that. I had the original xbox and then upgraded to the PS3. Those RROD’s hurt it’s rep pretty bad.
