Forbes thinks Grand Theft Auto IV could hurt the Wii
It really just wouldn’t be fair to the hordes of Wii fanboys who harass the comment sections of my work here at Gamer to let the coals cool for too long before giving the fire a helpful poke in the right direction, so to that end, here’s another legitimate media entity that thinks the Wii might not be all rainbows and butterflies: Forbes thinks that the Nintendo Wii could suffer from not offering Grand Theft Auto IV, one of the best-rated and most anticipated games to date.
According to Forbes.com, analyst Michael Pachter said of the Grand Theft Auto IV in relevance to the Wii’s success, “It’s one of a series of good games that will each convince consumers that there is a lot of good content on the other two boxes.” That’s because GTA IV was predicted to rake in over $400 million within its launch week for producer Take Two Interactive Software.
However, Forbes is of the opinion that the Wii is like Godzilla, stomping out the competition on the streets of Japan (or the other global markets, for the purposes of the simile). Forbes writer Brian Caulfield writes, “…though the Wii seemed to lack the muscle that so many other gaming platforms hoped to build up, plenty of consumers fell in love with the console. In a relatively short time, the Wii elevated Nintendo from worst to first in the game console market.
That is, until now.
Caulfield points out that Best Buy and other electronic retailers are pushing the PS3 — not the Wii — as a nice match for new HDTVs, because of the DVD upscaling and Blu-ray playback capabilities. In Microsoft’s camp, Take-Two has made a deal to create downloadable content available only on Xbox Live.
The Wii really does push boundaries and do a lot for the advancement in the theory of game creation. However, things like being underpowered and not focused on direct competition with the other two leading consoles might be detrimental for Nintendo in the long run.

Haven’t you fools figured it out yet? There are fanboys, and there are fanboys, but the Wii is unlike ANYTHING that’s ever been released, game console or otherwise. The price point at which Nintendo offers their full fledged console (and not some stripper model, we’re looking at you, Xbox 360 Arcade), and the sheer amount of fun, drunk or not, you can have with a Wii means that just about everyone is going to buy one, IN ADDITION TO a 360 or a PS3. Most people won’t buy both larger consoles, because the expense can’t be justified in the handful of “dedicated” titles that are actually any good.
Hence, Nintendo wins. Its not about who’s got the better console if there’s a Wii next to every PS3 or XBOX out there.

It has been said before and I agree, the Wii really should not be in the same classification as the 360 or PS3 for obvious reasons.
Yes it is beating the pants off the 360 and PS3 – no questions there.
GTA4 will not hurt the Wii, is will still sell. It is cheap and has the novelty factor. If GTA4 has an effect, it won’t be much.

i don’t think it’ll hurt the wii in the longterm, but i think it will sway those still on the fence in the short term. who knows? pachter’s been wrong more than right anway.

I dont know why people still write “Wii should not be in the same classification as the PS3 and 360″ or “Wii is not next gen”
when the first thing the Nintendo representatives said was “If youre looking for nex gen.. then youre in the wrong place…” other than that.. its a fun console… damn the Wii Fit and its $100 price tag….

Wii is not competing with the PS3 or the Xbox 360, well it is in the traditional “let’s compare sales data” sense, but when you look at the 3 systems out now any idiot could say: “MS and Sony are in competition and the Wii is in it’s own little slice of reality”
When the Wii was announced, Nintendo said that they are not competing with Sony and MS, so if the makers say they are going for a different market and they succeed in that, then they are not in competition.

OH, and DWH, no offence I just want to pun your last statement:
Damn normal exercise and it’s 0 dollar price tag.

Could GTA IV help the Wii, considering all the negative press it is getting, and Wii being the only console that doesn’t have it?

Any press is good press, well, most of the time that’s the rule. This kind of negative press (in some corners) will only help spur on sales, I think.
