Sony claims PS3 to beat Wii and Xbox 360 in console war – In 10 years
The Playstation 3 is currently in a definite third place in worldwide sales, although momentum seems to be building for the machine, at the cost of the Xbox 360. But how long will that momentum take to build to a sufficient level to take the Playstation 3 past the Xbox 360, and then potentially beyond the Wii too?
The home console war between the PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii may seem like it’s been going for ever, but actually, it has only been going for a relatively short period of time, especially in light of Sony’s commitment to the 10 year lifespan of the Playstation 3.
And now, according to Sony Computer Entertainment President Kaz Hirai, that’s how long it’s going to take for the PS3 to be the lead format. He told the BBC:
“We’ve only really begun to scratch the surface with PlayStation 3 but I am confident that given the long life-cycle we have planned for the machine we are going to have a very good install base in all of the major territories.”
“I am very confident that after the 10-year life cycle we will have the install base that we are looking for and that is obviously to be in the leadership position.”
That’s all well and good, but in 10 years time, we are likely to have seen another 1 or 2 Nintendo consoles come and go, and will probably be playing the next generation of Microsoft machines too, assuming it doesn’t decide to leave the race altogether after the Red Ring Of Death debacle.
Hirai then discussed the time line of a new Sony console emerging. It seems that though the PS3 may be on course for a 10 year lifespan, we will be seeing a successor long before that:
“We need to take a look at advances in technology in various areas, such as semiconductors, graphics chips, output devices, mainly TV and monitors, to see where we would like to benchmark our next generation product.”
From those comments, it sounds as though Sony will make a decision on when the next console, presumably to be called Playstation 4 (get your bets on now) by the speed of advancements in other areas. Certainly at this point the Playstation is as good as it gets in terms of graphical abilities and high definition gaming.

Interesting interpretation of Hirai-san’s quotes, DAVE PARRACK!
But it seems to me that he didn’t say the PS3 would take 10 years to take the lead. He said that after 10 years, the PS3 would have the highest install base over the competition. This could happen in 3, 4, 5 years… who knows? If it happens at all.

The battle is a two way battle, not a three way. Yes its a “console”, but capability wise the Wii is firmly planted in the same generation as Xbox and PS2. Nintendo has no “console” that truly competes with Xbox360 and PS3. You want to compare Wii to something, compare it to PS2 which IS still on the market and still selling well. When (if) Wii surpases PS2 you’ll have a story, and if Nintendo puts out a “console” that can go head to head with Xbox360 and PS3 this current gen will THEN (and ONLY then) become a three way race.
As to who will win Xbox360 vs PS3, we’ll leave to the Arvis and Kevin and other fanboies to argue.

I believe the PS3 will surpass the 360 in a few years or so, with the momentum it has going now. I don’t think it’ll be passing the Wii anytime soon, but the Wii just never seemed a serious console to me (although it’s the only next-gen I own at the moment. :p )

Holy crap, I just got put on the same level as Kevin.
…
I don’t know whether or not to be honored or totally insulted.
Am I really that much of a presence on these blogs?

PS3 will smash past 360 (already has in europe and australia/asia)
But will need 10 years to catch up to wii. That will be about 5 years after wii has been replaced by another nintendo console…lol

When PS3 has top notch games to come out like Grand Theft Auto 4, Call of Duty 4, etc. then it will definitely take the lead. When Sony cuts the bullshit out about delaying games and Home, then the PS3 will be in 1st place.
Gamers are waiting for Sony to fulfill these steps, then they will jump on board….But until then, the 360 will hold the lead…..

XD DavidB.. youre very funny… emphasising on the “wrong” “words”….
are you questioning that the Wii ISNT a console???
and yeah.. its not on the same level as PS3 and 360 because the first thing the Nintendo OR guy said was… “If youre looking for nex gen.. youve come to the wrong place…”
and guess what people…. “casual” gaming is profitable and a HUGE market… its being proven by the Wii… YAY WIIIIIiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeee!!

i agree with ‘the future of sega’ sony needs to stop pissing around and start being honest with customers. Play tv and home has taken far too long. i understand games developers needing time as well and dont get me wrong, i cant wait for gran turismo 5 but we’ve all been bloody patient with all these set backs.

Sony have really let me down. Wait wait and see…….it’s been 2 years! I’m glad xbox have shown them up.
May 11th, 2008
simon in what way have microsoft shown them up??? by demonstrating that they produce less reliable hardware? that their customers have to pay for all the add-ons just to get to the standard level of spec as the ps3?? or that you have to pay for the internet??
May 11th, 2008
How has xbox shown them up…. by delivering a console way before it was ready, just to get the jump on the “other” consoles and the only thing they delivered was RROD….. In saying that, if they didn’t release it 1 year early, it would most certainly be in dead last place. To bad it’s hardware let it down??
The 360 has been a mammoth embarressment and I was an xbox owner.
Why does it continue to cop heat about RROD…because quite frankly, it deserves it. No other console or appliance has suffered up to 33% failure rate like 360 had.
May 11th, 2008
Sony has the delays…
MS has the unreliable hardware and extra costs and system sellers that arent exclusives…
they both have problems.. deal with it…
Im gonna enjoy Play TV… cus I cant enjoy Home.. and I dont have a Tivo.. Ill get a 350gb hdd and put it in my PS3… YAY!!!

@ Spidey
I hate having to use vgchartz.com as a reference site, as I know that they can be pretty inaccurate at times, but I wanted to point out that the PS3 is around 140,000 units behind the 360 in Australia. It definitely has not smashed past the 360.

As with all these charts and stats etc, there are some of them that say that PS3 has exceeded 360 unit sales in Australia….so who do we believe?
In saying that, I have also seen (from the same stats, charts, media releases etc) that PS3 sales in Australia had gained a good momentum and has been out selling 360 for some months now. I would say that if PS3 sales have not exceeded 360 yet, it will very soon.
(and yes, I don’t quote sources, but I really can’t be bothered trolling around finding them – consider this my “opinion” piece)
And hey, if they bring the price of 360 down far enough, i may even buy one (For halo, bioshock)
May 12th, 2008
How cheap would one have to be before you get one? PS3 has to go as low as $350 before I consider getting one.
May 12th, 2008
The “Bar” at which people are willing to pay for respective consoles are going to be different.
For me, I was willing to pay extra for the PS3 as I felt, in the long run, it was a better investment for me.
For all the optional extra features for 360, I would almost be paying the same (for the features that you can get for 360 that PS3 has, obviously not Blu-Ray). I like having them in the one package, rather than add ons.
So that is why I was willing to pay extra.
For a 360, I would only get the elite or maybe Pro. I would pay nothing more than probably 300-350 as well.

You are all morons

Bam,
You’re right. Your post, on the other hand, is extremely intelligent and open-minded. We shall now all strive to be just like you. Thank you so much for opening our eyes with your words of encouragment.

I would have loved to buy the PS3 (all said and done its an amazing piece of future-proof hardware). But given the lack of good games and a pretty lousy online system (lets not kid ourselves into believing that its anywhere close to XBOX Live.. yeah yeah, we know COD4 plays better on PSN than on Live… but thats just one freaking game), I’ll spending my next paycheck on a RROD infested XBOX. And then pray that thing doesnt break! Well, unfortunately, the console i want is PS3, but the games i want are on the 360 (and there’s only so many hours you can pile on your friends to enjoy the respective gaming consoles)… so next gen consoles here I come. I hope that by the time PS3 gets games that i like (Resistance, Killzone are very blah boring… although Grand Tourismo kicks FORZA’s IMO), I will hopefully have enough money to buy a PS3 too!
May 12th, 2008
Touching story Ric. I needed to wipe tears from my eyes after reading that bit of literature gold.
May 12th, 2008
resistance and killzone are boring??? why is xbox live sooo much better than psn? they both allow you to play online and psn has dedicated servers with less lag than xbl. is it because xbl has in game chat? psn is getting it too soon and its free. think about that. OVER THE LIFE OF YOUR CONSOLE, THAT WILL COST YOU AN ADDL $300-$400! THAT MAKES 360 TWICE AS EXPENSIVE AS PS3.AND WITHOUT A BLU-RAY PLAYER.
May 12th, 2008
ehutch,
Why do we have to explain why you need online chat. Isnt PS3 the next gen system that has 87 million next gen features. You explain to us why in game chat is not a next gen expectation…
And tell me why I want to:
1. Drive to blockbuster at $4/gal to rent a blu ray movie instead of download it on xbox marketplace
2. pay $30-40 dollars for a 2hr movie when i can spend $20 more dollars for a game that offers 20+ hours of entertainment (with xbox live its infinite)
3. get a blu ray collection when I never gave a crap about my dvd collection thanks to netflix
May 13th, 2008
well I hope PSN gets the simple things soon… I would love to listen to some rock songs while playing my Fifa 08 or Assassins… thatd be cool…
May 13th, 2008
I have absolutely no idea where Ric was headed with that post ??

hmmm yeh i own a ps3 and cant wait for things like in-game chat and or even simple messaging. its things like that that really let it down (in my opinion). Still, I bought one for the same reasons as spideydog, a better investment i think. I’m not really a fan of the xbox, the only thing i want from it at the moment is Bioshock, but the ps3 might get that anyway. I cant wait for LBP and Killzone, even Home will be great I think.
and oh yeh, arvis and winner, both make these threads very funny to read. Even if bam did have a intelligent post
Saying that, I’ve found myself interested in Viva Pinatta and even Banjo 3.
Anyway. bit random comment

I have both systems and can tell you that I have replaced my 360 once allready because of the red ring of death. I like both systems, but I think microsoft should have made a more solid performing system. In the long run, I think the Ps3 will win the war. With built in blue ray, and a system that has no hicups, I am glad I purchased A Ps3, after my xbox360. Don’t get me wrong I love My 360, but as a long term outlook the Ps3 is a clear winner.

I think nintendo has the right idea, so far the only games I still play on my ps3 are grand theft auto IV, Assasins Creed, and every once in a while a couple other games. But in the end I can burn more time with the wii. I think the wii’s succes could be due too, it appealing to a wider age group (that’s obvious), ps3 was the last system to come out of the three, instead of focusing on graphics nintendo is focusing on interaction which (I think) opens many more doors for future nintendo systems. Sony and microsoft could countinue making gaming graphics better, and throw in other little things as well, but I think that nintendo is wins because of the gaming experience, that’s all that really matters to me.
