Sony believes MMO titles like “The Agency” will drive PS3 sales
By Triston McIntyre
As I’ve been so graciously deemed the resident Sony fanboy of Blorge, I feel it is my duty to report all things Sony speak so the all you trolls can tear it to shreds. Sony feels that forthcoming massive multiplayer online titles, specifically the forthcoming “The Agency,” will draw gamers to the Playstation 3 in droves and hordes.
In an interview with the Seattle Times, John Smedley, president of Sony Online Entertainment, affirmed his belief that MMOs will sell consoles for Sony. He said, “I think MMOs are going to be a real strong selling point for the PS3 long term - there’s going to be some great ones on the PS3.”
The first title that will really kick things off for the Playstation 3 is going to be “The Agency,” at least according to Smedley. The Agency is going to be a large-scale MMO shooter, and will be exclusive the Playstation 3 platform.
If Sony can successfully get a foot in the forthcoming MMO shooter genre, then Sony would be sitting pretty. However, Microsoft is making a similar run at the genre, so the MMO shooter genre might just become another fanboy battle.
With Fallout 3 on the horizon, Sony might have a better lock on the RPG genre, at least at this point. However, I won’t discount the possibility of Sony getting a head start in the MMO shooter genre, if “The Agency” comes off correctly.

doesnt the 360 have “age Of Conan” coming out??
I hope “The Agency” isnt like “The Club” which was completely bullshit…
May 15th, 2008
sony are desperate. this is just another promise or prediction they are going to break.
May 15th, 2008
something needs to “drive ps3 sales”..so far, sony has driven them right into the toilet.
May 15th, 2008
kevin, have you been sleeping or under a rock for the last few months, ie: october till now?
Oh my bad, it’s kevin, the lone retard with his finger up MS’s butt.
May 15th, 2008
kevin- The toilet? They don’t seem to be doing that bad.
May 15th, 2008
lol right to the toilet? when compared to the release of the xbox 360 and put sales of ps3 and 360 side by side, the ps3 has sold more units than the 360 in the same amount of months. i dont exactly see your point kevin
May 15th, 2008
kevin, to be even more precise, over 2.5 million more PS3 units than 360 in the same period of time since launch.

Well, at least when the PS3 gets to the toilet, they’ll apparently have company…

carl - vgchartz is not fed by data. it uses estimates. sorry.
you’re ignoring the fact the ps2 had a userbase TEN TIMES that of the xbox. with that ratio, the ps3 should be crushing 360 sales at LEAST 5 to 1. But alas….
May 15th, 2008
kevin - do you have a different source that invalidates it’s estimates? Don’t be.
If you really want to bring the PS2 into the argument, then the PS3 seems to be right on track with PS2 sales estimates for the same amount of time since launch:
http://vgchartz.com/hwlaunch.php?cons1=PS2®1=All&cons2=PS3®2=All&cons3=X360®3=All&weeks=156
May 15th, 2008
carl - if you read vgchartz’ site, you’ll see they, themselve, admit to only using estimates.
estimates are nice, but as pachter has proven, NOT accurate…prolly why estimated sales aren’t used for earnings reports, rather ACTUAL (confirmed) sales.
May 15th, 2008
kevin - again, what actual sales numbers are you using that refute these estimates?
May 16th, 2008
Carl - the fact that your “source” is not credible.
May 16th, 2008
what are you kevin? a tobacco lobyist? simply discrediting a source does not validate your opinion any furthur.
you can’t pass off your opinion as fact no matter how much you agree with yourself
May 16th, 2008
owns all 3- try to keep up if you want to reply. the assertion is that the ps3 is selling on pace with the 360 in its first year…using a site that DOES NOT USE facts. that’s the point i was making. thanks for playing.
May 16th, 2008
Oh, thanks kevin, I sure wouldn’t have been able to figure that out on my own *rolls eyes*. That’s not the issue, apparantly you seem to have the unholy power to cite figures without citing sources, how does one acquire such a power? Is it something only idiots can do?
Carl asked a question and you dodged it, now answer the question if you want to “keep up before replying”
Thanks for playing:)

OA3 - +1
kevin - “if you read the VGC site methodology, you’ll see they, themselves, admit to” using “Historical sales figures” and “Data from sales tracking agencies as reference points in accuracy”, i.e., facts.
The difference between Pachter and VGC is that Pachter predicts the future, often innacurately, while VGC reports sales history.
Once again, my assertion was that the PS3 seems to have sold over 2.5 million units more than the 360 in the same period of time on the market, and that sales pace seems to also keep in time with PS2 historical sales figures. If you can find some source that refutes these figures or discredits them, please provide the link.
May 16th, 2008
CARL - i understand your assertion, but it’s baseless. the very site you’re using states it’s not factual. until sony posts some REAL numbers, you’re guessing the ps3 has kept pace with the 360.
That’s not even the point tho; with “120 milllion loyal ps2 owners” that sony was bragging about, it should completely eclipsing the 360’s sales…not “keeping pace”…
just the simple fact they’re bragging about keeping pace with console with a fraction of the branding of the playstation name, should tell you just how badly the ps3 is doing compared to expectations.
the source i found to “discredit” or “refute” the numbers are at vgcharz.com. where they admit to not using factual sales data, but data mining. not factual.
i can see why you guys use it tho; it’s the ONLY site that even hints at the ps3’s sales being as strong as the ps2’s..
i wonder why….
oa3 - look, nooblet, vgchartz does NOT use factual data. i know WHY you CHOOSE to believe it; but it just isn’t accurate. if it WAS it wouldn’t have a disclaimer.
thanks for playing.
May 16th, 2008
btw; the burden of proof is on sony. theyr’e the ones saying they sold on par with the ps2. just post up the ACTUAL sold numbers….which they REFUSE to do for EU.
i wonder why….
May 16th, 2008
kevin - I see, so your answer is you do not have any actual figures that conflicts with these figures that happen to be based on historical sales, retailer information, and industry analysts.
Please let us know when you do, so you can prove your argument.

Worldwide Hardware Sales (End of March 2008)
Wii - 24.45 million
Xbox 360 - 19 million
PS3 - 12.81 million

Maybe this guy uses the same info? If you can do any better kevin, please let me know.
May 16th, 2008
carl - you can’t use “historical sales” on the ps3 as it’s the FIRST console of it’s kind. what ‘historical data” are they using? there is NONE. it’s the FIRST YEAR…
“retailer information”..? wtf… there needs to be more than that. a phone call to a fanboy gamestop clerk can be considered “retailer information”, but not accurate as DATA.
sony is sitting on the numbers for a reason…
it’s funny you forget that sony is the king of hype. if they had ANY significant sales news they’d be screaming it. but they’re silent….
that should tell you something…
believe what you want. you ps3 zealouts believe in fantasy anyway, so this should be no different.
i will do better…when sony releases their reportable numbers…. not the bs they feed the press thru underhanded channels.
May 16th, 2008
kevin - actually, it is the second year (Nov 11, 2006)
That you will do better is good (i.e. not saying Sony sales are ‘in the toilet’ without significant data - by your standards)
