Kojima talks Metal Gear Solid 4 - Mixed reviews for PS3 exclusive

Metal Gear Solid 4 is on the way, being released worldwide to an expectant Playstation 3 fan base on June 12th. The fourth instalment of the long-running series is due to be Solid Snake’s last outing, and therefore needs to wrap all of the various plot points up, but has Hideo Kojima managed it, and what are the reactions to the game around the Web?
The Metal Gear Solid franchise has been a Playstation brand since the original hit the Playstation in 1998. Before that there had been Metal Gear games on both the NES and bizarrely the MSX2, but Hideo Kojima’s brilliance is now purely for the pleasure of Sony fans.
With the forthcoming fourth title wrapping up Solid Snake’s story, and Kojima’s direct input on the games, it has a lot to live up to, finishing the story off to the satisfaction of millions, and offering something new for PS3 owners to get their teeth in to at the same time.
Kojima, the brains behind the series who claimed the game could never come to the Xbox 360 due to it’s sheer size, recently spoke to Reuters about the fourth game, and the future of the Metal Gear brand. He said:
“It wraps up all the stories of the past MGS games. I’m not a genius like George Lucas, I didn’t have this story planned out. I always tried to finish the story in each game. But by some miracle in MGS4 I was able to resolve the mysteries left behind in past games and resolve the side stories from past games.”
“MGS will always be around. I feel a responsibility to continue this series as long as users demand it. But it doesn’t mean I’m going to sit in completely. I’ll probably take a different role in the next game. Maybe I’ll sit in as producer and let the young staff take control of the new series. I really want to go on to new things.”
I really hope he doesn’t do a Lucas personally as his attempts at wrapping up a series to the satisfaction of hardcore fans hasn’t exactly been spectacularly successful. I think Kojima’s decision to take a back seat after this instalment is a good one, as it will freshen the series up and it may be able to breathe a little more.
The reviews have started to come in around the Web, and though most have been positive, Eurogamer have panned several elements of the game, and only saw fit to award it an 8/10, not what Sony were really expecting for a game intended to shift the Playstation 3.
However, it seems the fans don’t care and are snapping up the game in their droves regardless. Punch Jump is reporting that Metal gear Solid 4 is approaching the top ten on Amazon.com for all video games just on pre-orders.

exactly, just like i said……the 360 has a HUGE disadvantage with the 8.5gb disc supporting player…..that fact will shorten the life of the 360’s life just like cigarettes and drugs do to a person……and the fact that ps3 has a better game lineup

What is the purpose of this article? There have been reviews that have said this game marks the arrival of the true next generation of game.
Metal Gear Solid 4 will be a watershed event for the entire gaming community and while your article seeks to sully the reputation of a game yet to be released itwill have no impact whatsoever.

A range of 8 out of 10 to 10 out of 10 constitutes mixed reviews? Geez, if I came home with 4 A+’s and an A, my parents would have bought me a whore. When did 8 out of 10 become a bad thing? It sure isn’t enough to get me to cancel my pre-order. When MGS 4 starts getting 3’s and 4’s out of 10, then I will agree that it is getting mixed reviews. Until then, it seems like even the lowest scores aren’t all that low.

It’s probably not just the scores taken into consideration, it is also the comments made in the various reviews that could be considered a “mixed” review.

I don’t think 8 is a bad score. I just want to know why everyone is so amped to play this game. The main character is a Grandfather. Why do you want to play as this old man. Does he attack with crutches and a cane and rolls around in a wheelchair? Also is this coming to the 360 in a years time like it is speculated? As you can tell I know nothing about this game.

Edge: 8/10 (I don’t how many of u r aware of Edge, I read it now and again, they are litterly the toughest reviwers in the gaming industry, I didn’t think they would give MGS4 10/10 because the series doesn’t appeal to everyone, the score isn’t bad but still a little disappointing)

IGN UK: 9.9/10 (UK are toughest of the three IGN’s, so I’m looking forward to what score IGN US an IGN Au give)

Considering the scores MGS4 is getting across the globe, I wouldn’t want to be the reviewers from Eurogamer and Edge, they are going to get more stick from their peers than the guy who gave Goldeneye 4/10 and Dave Parrack for putting “Mixed reviews” on the name for this article.

Its funny how he only mentions the worse score it has gotten. On metacritic, it has a 97. 1 below gtaIV, mainly because of the eurogamer score. Everybody else gave it perfect. MGS4 has gotten a better score than any 360 game ever.

Spideydog I agree blog author bashing is wrong, but phrasing it that way was going to ignite.
Think of the poor souls who came across this, scan read it, and went away thinking MGS4 is only worth 8 out of 10? (NOT that 8 / 10 is bad, mixed reviews my ass).
Edge is the hardest nut to crack, 8 / 10 from them is pretty damn good, their review didn’t really have any criticism, only that it wasn’t what they hoped it would be. What they had hoped I have no idea.

I don’t get why some of you people are so upset over a game’s review score. It’s just the opinion of the reviewer and shouldn’t effect your own experience with a game.
Case in point - Lost Odyssey. It received good to luke warm reviews (normally in the 7.5 - 8.5 range) but I personally love the game and am currently playing it through the second time. It has received more love than my copy of GTAIV when I look at time spent between both games.
I mean seriously, do you people really need the approval of a reviewer before you will openly say that you like a game? Hell, I am sure there are people out there who think Haze is fantastic. That’s the magic of free thinking!

Unfortunately that is the way with a lot of people, so for that reason, it can be important - even if not to me personally.
Individually reviews count for very little, but if everyone is saying a game is good, or everyone is saying it is rubbish, then I think it should be taken into consideration.
Thanks to Me: up there, he has shown that MGS4 is definitely worth considering/buying straight away.

Hey, they can give 8/10 to MGS4, but when every other site gives it a perfect score Eurogamer loses its credibility, and, like GameTrailers, is discovered to be a Microsoft-sponsored 360 fanboy site.
Whether you like the game or not, MGS by far has the greatest characters and story line of any video game series. MGS4 is going to be a great, great game… it may not get perfect reviews like GTA IV, but it’s a game for the fans.
Hell, GTA IV needed to get perfect scores didn’t it? Between the PS3 and 360, so many people were buying the game that Rockstar couldn’t afford to get bad ratings.
Either way, PS3 owners win. We get GTA IV, and MGS4. Two of the greatest games you will ever see

I agree that Sega is a very good company. The systems they made were classis. Genesis was a good system. Dreamcast was good too. it was like a mini arcade machine.(House of the Dead)…and sega did make alot of awesome games. But i have to say Sony will always be the leader of gaming. Yes, i do agree that using the “mixed reviews” line in the header is drawing a long bow…. but it did stimulate a pretty active debate.
Oh as for Sega, I owned just about all the machines Sega made with my fav being the Dreamcast. It was such a shame that it died so quickly as the console itself was pretty damn good. So for the record, I’m not a “Sega Hater” so “THE FUTURE OF SEGA” can go back to giving his boyfriend the attention he deserves

Well I know there isn’t alot to work with on this one, but Kev, that was poor.
The majority of reviews are positive, and even then they don’t really matter except to those in the ‘war’ of console.
I woulda purchased this game if IGN/Gamespot/Eurogamer etc. gave it 0/10.
And correct, its not going to shift consoles - i’m starting to think some of those analysts are correct and we’ve (360/PS3) hit ’saturation’ point, at least for current prices etc.

OK OK, lets get the record straight people. I have ALWAYS been a fan of Sega! I will die a Sega fan. I owned almost all of the Sega consoles too. But yeah, after Sega stopped making consoles, I was fascinated with the ORIGINAL Xbox’s graphics and gameplay, at that time.
I mean Halo 1 was freaken amazing! I couldn’t believe a game like that would exist 1 year into the new millennium! It was dejavu! This was the TRUE human vs alien game…..But along came Halo 2 which did serve up the cherries in the pie to me.
That game felt incomplete. It didn’t have the feel of the original Halo which is best of all time!…….And when Halo 3 came out, thats when I parted my ways with Microsoft…….
On Halo 3, they made Master Chief such a nerd and geek! But on Halo 1 he was such a bad ass! I mean that guy was Hulk Hogan but in video game form!
……..And ever since Xbox 360 arrived on the market, I was disgusted with their retail price! $400 fucken dick dollars for an XBOX!??!?!? Are you shitting me up the ASS!!??!?????????

And i also own both a 360 and PS3. I have to say, both are good consoles! With the 360 I wish they had a loading slide, the way how you put PS3 games in. Also the 360 needs a fast forward and rewind button on the Music Player menu! It’s a fucken shame!
Now thats twice that they have done that crap! First with the original Xbox, and now this! And another thing, the Xbox 360’s control schemes are very slow compared to PS3. Whenever you try to type, load up the dashboard, etc, it takes a second and a half longer than the PS3. Maybe it’s the dual core processor in their that needs tunning up, or a software/hardware update, beats me.
……I own the Halo version 360…….
Now with PS3, the fact that the only color available right now is black disgustes me! I wanted a damn silver PS3 from the get go! And whatever happened to that boomerang controller, ehhh!??? I loved that fucker!!!…….And now it’s gone
Also, when it comes to visulations on the Music Player, the 360 CLEARLY outbeats the PS3! On the 360 it feels like you’re in a dream world! But on the PS3……..it feels like you’re in a nightmare
Now when it comes to games, that squarely falls upon the lazy ass game developers. Some of them rather stick their cock up the 360, but some of them rather enjoy the view of the PS3’s sexyness. Oh yeah baby!!!!

The boomerang reminded me of some cheap 3rd party Saturn controller you used to be able to purchase. I am glad they got shot of that thing and gave us the Sixaxis/DS3.
And oh, people actually use thier consoles to listen to music? I’ve always thought it was a stupid feature ever since the PSX.
Streaming video from your media server tho, now THAT is a feature i’m loving - best ‘feature’ so far on both machines.

Do not get me started…i could name 100s of bad things about the 360..it is a good system, but you have to admit there are some things that are ridiculous..i will try to name all i know or remember:
Xbox 360 Bad Things
1. $60 just to play online for a year
2. to play wirelessly, you have to buy a $100 adapter which hangs out the back(ugly), lets not forget about the wireless router you have to buy
3. 360 has a stupid Dvd 9…it has 8.5gb discs…that means games are not long or complex…due to this, 360 will miss out on many games…game developers really want to make there games the way they want…they always want to be creative…well, the dvd 9 is that limit to where the creativity stops…ps3 has bluray which has 50gb discs…that means theres hope for the game developers..the G Ders wont wont want to work with M$ anymore because of this…people always go for better opportunities
4. if you want Hi def movies on the 360, you have to buy a 200 dollars ad on
5. not all 360 have hard drives disks
6. the first 360 didnt have HDMI port…now they do…it doesnt mean that 360 actually supports true 1080p
7. The 360 has the red ring of death or overheats often or quickly
8.the 360 has an UGLY BIG FATASS power supply….that thing is like almost the size of the 360
9. There is nothing 360 about the xbox 360
10. 360 has an ugly shape…(sometimes when you look at it, it looks cool….but when you think about it>o..k?
11. you dont get alot of memory on 360
12. you dont get many usb ports
13. sometimes the 360 scratches discs

Apart from Age of Empires that’s good, the only good Microsoft game. Microsoft have relied too much on third party and now they r paying for it with most of these games now on ps3 as well and there sequels released same time, Condemned 2 and Saint’s Row 2 and possibly Bioshock 2! and Lost Planet and Bioshock making the way to the console, Mass Effect and it;s sequel will probably follow to. MS are now having to rely on 1st party and guess what?! they are terrible at it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@ Matt….HA HA HA lol right on brother! The thing that really pissed me off about Halo 3 was that, almost the entire game, you don’t get play with Cortana. And since Halo 1, I was use to hearing her voice or hearing her say “What the hell are you doing!? Marines, the Chief has gone loony. Take him down boys!” or “The Silent Cartographer must be hidden below the base……”, and etc.
In Halo 3, she shows up with what, only two or 3 levels left!? What a shitload of FUCK!!! And not only that, Master Chief doesn’t lose any health if he jumps 20 feet off a ledge or something!
What, is he God now????? Lol geez. In Halo 1, you would be scared shitless to jump off a ledge! But I guess Halo 3 is a whooooooole different genre

I still haven’t bought Xbox Live for my 360 yet. And I’m one of those customers that own a PS3 and a Xbox 360, but doesn’t own a high def tv. Yeah, SO WHAT!!!!! Who says that you need a Goliath tv in order to enjoy yourself??????

I’ve noticed that they only put up the PS3’s GTA 4 review score above the 360 for only 2 days at most. But for the past 3-4 weeks, the Xbox 360 version has been at the top. Now according to other reviews, the Xbox 360 version only got a 99. But the PS3 version got a perfect 100!
Bastards……The only site that I trust right now is IGN! They seem to be the most unbias gaming site I’ve seen so far. Do you guys know any other trust worthy gaming sites????
